View Full Version : Titan Quest (Diablo Clone)

I downloaded and played through the demo over the weekend for Titan Quest. It's basically a Diablo clone with 3D graphics and a mythological theme. I found it pretty entertaining and will probably pick it up once it comes out. About the only thing I didn't like about the game was that you couldn't rotate the camera view. Not a game killer for me, but a minor annoyance. If you like Diablo clones, I'd suggest checking this one out.

The game is out now and I'll probably pick it up on the way home today. Early reviews have been pretty positive. Tom Chick gave it a 4.5/5 and his tastes tend to be similar to mine. The wife's gone until Saturday night as well, so I'll actually have some time to play the game. :D

It's the best Diablo style game I've played since Diablo (and I've tried most of them). I'm about 2/3 of the way through the game and haven't gotten tired of playing which is unusual for me.

Yesterday my wife (who generally doesn't play computer games despite my best efforts) started a character and ended up playing for about 6 hours straight after saying she would just try it out. I just bought another copy so we can play multiplayer together over our LAN.

The only thing I'm not thrilled about is no random dungeons which may hurt replaying it at higher levels, but something that I hope makes up for that is the game comes with a mod builder. I'm hoping a community develops that will design new adventures for download. If that happens, I think this will become a regular game in my gaming rotation especially if the wife continues to enjoy it and doesn't grow bored.

I hope this game isn't $50 off the shelf. I've been looking for a mindless-ish game to play with friends when I go back to college and this seems to fit the bill better than the mediocre Dungeon Siege 2.

I thought DS2 was a great game, but I can understand why people would think that it was mediocre.

It is listing for 45-50 right now, which is a little more than I'm looking to pay for it unless there is really good buzz from the people playing it right now.

I had fun with DS2 - much more than with the first one. But I didn't have much desire to go back and replay it with a different character or on a harder difficulty level.

I picked it up and logged about 10 hours with the game so far. Its fun, nothing groundbreaking; but it works as great gaming methadone to get me off of FM2006. I think im going to hold off playing until the patch comes out tho, it has a random character corruption problem thats really starting to bug me.

Yep, definitely nothing groundbreaking...but that's fine with me. It's basically Diablo using the mythology of Greece, Egypt and China.

I guess I've been lucky and haven't had any random character corruptions. In fact, the only problem I've had was one disconnection in multiplayer. No crashes, no corruptions problems, etc (although I've seen that stuff reported on the official boards). At this point, I've put in about 30 hours in single player and another 10 hours in multiplayer. I love having a new game during a holiday weekend! :D

There's a mod out for the game that adds a few things that are nice. Allows potions to stack to more than 5 in an inventory slot and the ability to add relics to blue/purple items. I think the mod is called the enhanced experience mod version 4.0. I didn't save a link, but you can find it over at the official boards in the general discussion area.

Gothic 3 has been a bit of a disappointment (sorry Buc, although I do think I will get back to it once an expansion or another patch or two come out. I've hit a few other quests that appear to me to be bugged besides the hungry wolves quest and it is growing frustrating.)

So, I found myself searching the board for other RPG's that I haven't played. I've never really gotten into Diablo, but reading some reviews out there and thoughts on here have interested me in this game. I realize it is vastly different than Gothic 3 or Oblivion, but I think it will tickle my RPG itch for now. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the price has dropped to 19.99 at my local gamestop. So, I'll probably pick it up on the way home from work tonight. Just thought I'd share that it is down to 19.99 for anyone else who was intrigued by the game in the past.

Uhmm, I'm talking about Titan Quest. I only mentioned Diablo, because of the title of this thread which mentions it is a diablo clone. Also, most reviews say it is a Diablo 2 clone, except that it is generally better executed.

Edited to add: I've tried Diablo and Diablo 2 and didn't really get into them, but I'm willing to take a chance that I'll like this game better since it is only 19.99.

Titan Quest is a lot of fun but the story is really short.

The expansion comes out on 3/5, and will add 8 new classes, 10 new character levels, lots of new items, monsters, etc., and about 15-20 more hours of gameplay.

I loved Titan Quest (even my wife did), and will definitely be buying the expansion.

Yeah, I enjoyed titan quest so far that I have played it. I only play it for like 2-4 hours every 2 months or so though mostly due to time restraints. I would fully say if you liked DIablo II, you will like it. If you didn't like Diablo II, you won't like it.

I want to find randonized dungeons and trek acros unexplored lands and have it all done on the fly like a real RPG should be.

Add me to the list that enjoyed Titan Quest, although I couldn't muster the excitement level to go through it multiple times in single player with different classes.

However, if someone is looking to play multi-player at some point (Alan T - we have talked about this in the past) I would be happy to fire this game up again and give it a go. Ideally starting with new characters instead of some of the ones I've played with in the past.

I'll also take the plunge on the expansion shortly after release.

I'm not sure why, but I'm enjoying this game much more than I ever enjoyed Diablo or Diablo 2. It could be that I tried both of those games several years after they had come out and the graphics were dated, while this is a good looking game. However, I don't think that is it. I don't think it is the character development system, because it seems very similar from what I remember of Diablo 2's development system. I am a fan of the setting, although the story clearly isn't the game's main point. I think the biggest factor might be that the "rebirth fountains" which act as save points are much closer together than Diablo 2, so I could play this in shorter bursts if I want without having to backtrack. Shrug. Whatever the reason, I'm enjoying this game much more than I enjoyed Diablo 1 or 2.

Are you enjoying it more than Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 also?

Can't answer for EF but I liked it as much but not more than either of those games. They're all fun if you like the genre. I liked the character development better though. The gameplay of DS2 was better and the add ons make DS1 better in that area though I haven't checked the TQ mods in a while so that may have equalled out.

I'd say if you like any of these games, you won't be disappointed with any of the others. I'll add one I don't hear mentioned often. Sacred was a pretty fun game and it is huge. HUGE I tell you. It's discount bin now and would be worth a look.

Also there is the shareware game FATE which easily has gotten as much or even more play from me for some reason. No real story, simpler player development but just simply fun.

Well, with the expansion I think I can retract this comment. I've now started my second dynasty thread on the game and it is one of very few games that made the journey over from my last computer to this one.

Between my old PC and this one I'm now on my 7th alt, with the first six all having advanced to somewhere between Levels 30-55. 7th one is at level 6 and being chronicled in the Dynasty forum.

Very fun game. I've enjoyed this quite a bit more than the more recently released Hellgate:London and I expect this will stay in the rotation at least until Diablo 3 is released (next year? hopefully).

Well, a couple of things to keep in mind. The original Diablo is really old, and Diablo 2 is pretty dated now as well. The expansion pack for Titan Quest is also two years old, so it is new compared to the Diablo games but it is hardly cutting edge stuff right now.

That said, I think this game is at least as replayable as Diablo 2. I think the game + expansion pack gives you a lot of play for the money even if you only go through it with one character and never touch it again from that point on. I'm guessing you have 50-75 hours of single player storyline.

I really loved the skill system in Titan Quest. It kept most of the lower tier skills still viable in the endgame and the options of combining two trees really opened things up.

I think as far as level design and such it was a pretty big step down from Diablo, especially after the first Act. I thought they seemed pretty stale and just didn't grab me the way Diablo did. I can't really put a finger on it exactly, but it was missing something.

It's still the best Diablo clone out there, and at this stage I'd recommend it over Diablo 2 because of age. I highly recommend the expansion immediately if you get it. It's not something that just adds things later in the game or for people who already played. It adds several very handy features from the start and adds a new tree(which is probably my favorite).

I actually recently bought this game a 2nd time just to get it on Steam when they had a recent sale.

Sacred 2 is another possibility if you're looking for this type of game. I've bought it but didn't dive into it too much. It didn't strike me as wonderful, but I know a few people who really loved it. It definitely outdoes the others in openness and sheer size. It's a huge world and pretty open-ended as far as travelling.

So would anyone be interested in a multi-player game? I have barely dipped my toe in the water on this, but have heard it is pretty easy (both setup and play).

If people want to make it a little more challenging, I would suggest the following house rules:
1. Players6 mod for multiplayer
2. No spending any points on either spells or attributes until first death.
3. Upon each death, player has the option to spend one point on either a spell or an attribute. These points can be banked, if desired
4. No spending more than 10% of income purchasing any single item
5. May only purchase a maximum of three items per locale (Greece = locale, not city = locale)
6. No item swapping between alts, although MP trades between players with items found in MP game is allowed and encouraged
7. Complete all side quests.
8. No "farming" to get better equipment
9. Can purchase unlimited health and energy potions

Steam has TQ Gold for $19.99, includes both the original game and expansion. I'd like to end around 11pm EST, start time can be anywhere from 8pm to 10pm EST, depending on the baby's sleep schedule and the wife. If we go over...we go over. :) Weekends are hit or miss, but late is always better on the weekends.

If I could hammer out a solid schedule with the hardcore SG in City of Heroes I could probably figure out a decent time to add this in. Weekdays tend to be booked until 10pm eastern(yay retail). Sunday nights would be awesome, but again, I'm not sure how much that will be open because it may get filled.

Played the demo a bit and liked it enough to where I wanted to eventually get the game, but haven't done so. I guess playing CoH taught me how much I prefer to play something where I have the builds set in stone before even playing it. I might have to hit up some of the TQ forums and get some feedback on any builds I might do just in case you guys might not cut it. I actually lost track of this tonight with the NCAA tourney and then my kid staying up later. But I heard from NeonChaos and Danny via AIM and got a little bit of TQ in. I now have a slew of Level 1-6 characters for MP :)

I'm up for doing this sometime this week, or else just shooting for next Sunday to see if we can get a bigger group going for a regularly scheduled time slot.

If people want to play higher level alts that is great too. Currently I've got a Level 25 alt that can probably play up a few levels as long as it is on Normal. Or I can work on building up one of my other alts a few levels if someone wants to play somewhere in the 12-20 range.

Matthean
03-23-2009, 02:15 PM
I should be listed as matthean on Steam. I went and got the list of alts going. So far I've got 4 running.

Level 2 Dream, Fadeaway
Level 3 Storm, Korakin
Level 2 Warfare, Matthean
Level 1 Nature, Autumn Grace

Are there enough slots to have one of every set?

Danny
03-23-2009, 02:23 PM
Hoops, if the level 25 is your alt, which one is your main?

So far these are my characters.

Level 17, Conquerer (warfare/defense), Braxe

FireSpirit - Level 34 Conjurer, fully powered up, blew ironman mode at Level 25, now moving through Act IV on Normal.
cdp - Level 32 Conqueror, early version of "house rules" in single player (kind of a gimp for his level), predicting bad things for this guy with Typhon.
SonOfSquid - Level 25 Hunter, currently playing single player w/house rules, detailed in dynasty forum (major gimp for his level)
SquidIII - Level 5 Defender, intended for 6player mod
SquidLife - Level 5 Stormcaller, intended for 6player mod + house rules
SuperSquid - level 8 Dreamkiller, multiplayer, no house rules or 6max

Matthean, if you are around I'm up for playing for another 60-90 minutes tonight. I'll look to see if there is an FOFC game up and running.

Creating 6max game now:

I'll do one with my name in it and then use fofc as the password. It's pretty much what I'll use as a default. That is, if I don't see one of yours.

I believe the message I would get if that was the issue would suggest that we are on different versions - based on an earlier conversation with NeonChaos. The message I'm getting is "network problems detected".

I'm trying a .NET Framework update (3.5 w/SP1) to see if that fixes the issue. If that does not I'll go back in with the other database.

FWIW, I connected just fine last night with Danny w/o using the 6player database. But I would be pretty surprised if that had anything to do with "network problems detected".

Ack, hopelessly addicted to the game again. Having a blast trying completely different mastery combos. For the first time I've even stuck with a toon that didn't have defense as one of his mastery skill lines. Decided to go with Warfare/Spirit, and loving it. Was a death machine before I decided to grab the fan bugfix patch which fixed the broken skills, now its insane.

Here's "Uafasach the Spellbreaker" with his bud 'Jobarn' right after dinging 26.

Stylin' in the Obsidian armor. Took me forever to get the breastplate with my first toon, got two with Uafasach shortly after setting foot in Egypt.

I've never gotten more than one piece of a set. I did, though, get two killer legendary items my second time through Midas' labyrinth. I went in with about 600 in armor and left with a tad over 1100. I feel good about my prospects in Egypt.

For my Spellbreaker it was bunch of skills not working as advertised. On the Spirit side... Ravages of Time, Ternion, and some issues with the Liche King. On the Warfare side, Triumph didn't work properly.

When I found this out, I checked out the readme for the fix and noticed they took care of alot of armor and drop issues I had never noticed but I guess were obvious to anyone who looked in the database.

Bugged skills
- Ravages of Time does not reduce damage.

Bugged items
- Homados/Barbarian's Spiked greaves gives a wrong bonus

should give two bonuses, but only one displays (and works). It concerns the
following suffixes: "of Destruction, "of Carnage", "of Devastation" and "of Annihilation".

Bugged quests
- The Stygian Lurker gives the quest reward, but it disappears after exiting
the game.
- The Quest for Hades Generals does partially work, but not completely.

Bugged drops
- The loot tables are messed up, some items do not drop correctly. A partial
fix for this was made.

+1/2 to certain class skills on staves and some more).

- The Hermes Sandal relic doesn't give bonuses on completing

added to the patch

other players and apply them. To use these skins yourself you need to use the
Allskins Mod though.

Dola:

I think I've got three pieces of the Obsidian gear if you want to go for putting together the whole set.

I actually have the whole set on my old character I played when I first got the game (thanks to your damn dynasty post..), I just remember it taking me forever to get once I started trying. Especially the breastplate. That's why I was so shocked to get two of them so quickly. I think I'm also up to about 4 or 5 Fell blades. Sadly, not even using them.. Even though they look pretty sweet.

Once again, I'm having "network problems" errors. Is anyone else running this on Vista and seeing these errors? There are many forum threads on this topic, but no definitive answers. I've tried about every .NET update that exists, as well as all firewall settings, AV settings, standard Vista app troubleshooting (run as admin, XP SP2 mode), etc.

Ok, I officially like Storm a lot. Basically working the shard power with a little enhancing the weapons for melee stuff. Will start to work in some AoE soon to help smooth out some spots when they send a ton of guys. Anybody ever run a "pure" Storm character as in only taking Storm as their power set? Any other power sets that go with it that work well?

Danny

My level 16 druid is almost completely storm. I think nature provides a nice addition to that with heart of oak and eventually a skill which reduces the recharge time for all skills.

Bit of an update, my conquerer is towards the end of epic difficulty. I played epic very differently and it's taking me about a 1/3 of the time, I also find it much easier as the character with all the skills and gear tears through everything.

Danny
04-02-2009, 09:03 AM
I am also kind of cheating now, I'm using a mod and am increasing experience gained by x2, so while I end up at the same level because I skip killing a lot of regular mods, i'm enjoying leveling through the game at a fast pace since I finished once without it. I'll likely go back to regular on legendary, but epic seems kind of a tweener difficulty, I'd rather get to legendary.

The mod also has stackable potions, flying bodies and tons of other options. It's fun to play with sometimes.

Matthean
04-02-2009, 07:40 PM
Spirit goes well with everything. :) To the point of being broken if your a staff wielder.

Not sure where I'm going with the Storm character so I'm not sure how much a staff plays part of it, but Spirit is one set I haven't really planned on taking just yet. I could probably make a Spirit character and go the staff route just to try it out. Going on vacation, so I'll have time to mule over what secondary I want.

Level 2 Dream, Fadeaway
Level 10 Storm, Korakin
Level 2 Warfare, Matthean
Level 8 Nature/dream, Autumn Grace
Level 8 Spirit, Morticane

Updating again. Still going with a pure Storm as of this moment as I kind of still get a feel for stuff. Really feel like I'm cake walking most of the content outside of the monster battles. Also taking notes about sets and how to build guys as I level up. Hopefully at some point I just can get the idea for a build and hammer it out pretty much in my head enough to where there is very little guess work.

Spirit goes well with everything. :) To the point of being broken if your a staff wielder.

My character list obviously shows I broke down and made a Spirit character. I do 2 points into my mastery and one into the skills so 2-5 it was ok. Where it felt like it started to get broken was when I hit level 6 and got the Lich King. I love the fact I can do either the staff and crank out a high amount of damage with the Lich King, or go into melee and use the one skill that does damage while stealing life. It makes me rather sturdy even if my melee damge is lacking.

I would say this for Spirit, but it's more across other sets as well. I really like how they made skills that can be used in ranged, melee, utility, etc pretty much in any set, so it gives you so many build options and you doesn't limit you in sticking with certain mastery sets.

Oh, I have yet to get a blue item on a guy before tonight and I might of had a one green one before tonight as well. My Spirit character got 3 blue drops including a obsidian armor piece in his one play session tonight. He was level 5-6 and getting stuff that had level 11-14 level requirements.

thread resurrection alert!

I bought Titan Quest Gold from Steam over the Holidays but I've yet to play it. Was thinking of firing it up in between play session of King's Bounty but I got a question.

TQ Gold comes with both the original game and the Immortal Throne expansion. My question is the following: Should I start playing with the original game, try to finish it in order to subsequently start another game with Immortal Throne, or should I install and fire up Immortal Throne right away?

Essentially, I'm asking if the expansion simply adds new stuff to the original game, à la Civ IV Warlord (& Beyond the Sword) or if it's a separate game entirely.

Thanks in advance.

FM,

Go ahead and install the expansion and start a game with it. The expansion adds a few neat features to the core game including an extra class, a disenchanter, and a few other nice perks. Also, it includes an extra chapter to the story that starts seamlessly after you beat the core original game. No good reason not to play with the expansion now.

FYI, once you complete Normal and go to Epic, you get a cross the board penalty in your resistances so you by default don't want to just simply go to the higher difficulty settings.

It’s fascinating to me how narrow the “groove” is for a game I love. I’ve played a fair number of RPG games a bit, and loved a few. I LOVED this game, but never got much from Torchlight, which is awfully close to being the same game (seems to me).

One of the "simple" things TQ does well is the space between save points. They really nailed the distance that gives time to play, but doesn't keep you playing well past your interest because of the need to get to a save point.

TQ does some many things right.
