View Full Version : Get a new Keeper or not?

I want to upgrade my Keeper, who I've had since season 19(I believe), last night he popped to inadequate experience. He averages 3.5 stars and gets 4 stars in high solid or excellent form.

I want an outstanding Keeper, but an outstanding keeper only gets 4.5-5 stars, and I'm not sure that it's worth the $2.6 million or so an outstanding keeper would cost.

Here is my current keeper:

Sooner or later you're gonna need to upgrade. Even with inad xp, a solid keeper isn't going to last you much longer. If you really need one now, I would grab one. But if you can hold of a while and grab a brilliant or higher, I would do that instead.

It all depends on your need, patience, and cash situation.

I'm not really in a rush this season, and I have $2.8 mil to spend. At the end of the season I'll be getting around 7 mil more to spend as well.

I think an outstanding cental defender would help...or a formidable wing back ;)

But honestly- I agree with The Heard if you can wait and get a brilliant or higher that is probably a better option.

You could buy an 18 yo brilliant keeper in a few weeks ;)

Why would he buy and 18yo Brilliant if he wasn't training GK, especially when there will be a 19yo Outstanding heading out onto the transfer market in the next week or two? :)

The Arkham Avengers have an outstanding Keeper on the market I noticed.

Speaking of buying keepers...

vex's guy is pretty much identical to mine...perhaps a little higher valued and with a little better experience. I was planning on making the jump to a better keeper by the end of this season, but I'm torn as to how far I want to go. Brilliant was my original idea, but then I realized that a brilliant keeper's only like a star or star and a half better than the Outstanding I could get for half the cost, and all of a sudden, Outstanding was sounding much better. Then I could also upgrade my other forward position. Thoughts?

Not sure what kind of defenders you have so I can't say how much he would help. With a solid def/ solid pm cd played offensive and two solid def wb's played defensively with Reeder in net I got these ratings:

Right Side Defence: brilliant
Central Defence: brilliant
Left Side Defence: world class

From right to left their experience was weak, poor, and inadequate. Hope that helps in your making your decision.

I'm actually thinking I'm going to get a stud wingback/CD and then a formidable WB or CD on the side.

Don't rely on stars too much when buying players, the general opinion is that stars don't mean too much :) I think upgrading from a solid to an outstanding goalie will increase your Defense ratings pretty much...

Honestly, my sentiment is that one keeper will raise defense ratings across the board as much as buying 3 equal skill level defenders. Should be cheaper and not as many worries about matchups.

A goalie will raise the wing defense levels more than the central defense rating, just fyi :)

Nyarl, I'd put large $$ that you have a defensive minded coach.

dMB, not even, here's his coach...

A solid coach who is fond of attacking
A pleasant guy who is fiery and honest.
Has solid experience and poor leadership abilities.

This kind of defensive ratings are nice to know, as I have about the same setup in terms of defenders, except my two wingback are much older, but with solid experience...

For whatever it's worth, I had my stud 18 yo GK (he popped to brilliant last week) in goal for my cup match loss. He let in crapola. He was outstanding at the time, with inad/passable defenders in with him. In the match before that, he had one solid defender in front of him and two inad/pass defenders and got the following ranks:

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=2 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top>Right Side Defence:</TD><TD vAlign=top>brilliant</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top>Central Defence:</TD><TD vAlign=top>outstanding</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top>Left Side Defence:</TD><TD vAlign=top>excellent</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

In the last match, after he hit brilliant, with the same defenders (perhaps flip-flopped L/R wingbacks):
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=2 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top>Right Side Defence:</TD><TD vAlign=top>excellent</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top>Central Defence:</TD><TD vAlign=top>outstanding</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top>Left Side Defence:</TD><TD vAlign=top>magnificent</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

In his last week as an outstanding (thus an outstanding+4), he put up 5 stars in both league and cup play. In the last league match, after he hit brilliant, he put up 5.5 stars.

Regardless of how great your GK is, it helps to have defenders to help him out...I just picked up an excellent defender for just that purpose.

Normally I don't, but I figure that Stars are a pretty good correlation to skill, in terms of goalies. Isn't keeping the only skill that they use?

Vikas

I guess you've got a point there too :)
I don't know too much about goalies, just that i'd rather improve my goalie than my defenders to improve ratings. :)

He wasn't my coach at the time Reeder played with my starting defenders. And the guy at that time was defensive minded. I had forgotten about that.

yeah, this may change my plans for spending what little money I have saved so far, like "should I spend now or save for an outstanding keeper" :)

I get formidable/excellent/formidable defense with my current setup, but my two wingbacks, solid defenders/solid experience are 30 & 31 :)

Are you sure about that? Brilliant is only a level above outstanding, and outstanding keepers go for $2.5 MM. I really doubt I could get $5 MM for selling a brilliant keeper. Maybe you were thinking of a higher skill level?

Vince
03-31-2004, 03:16 AM
I was being a little ambiguous. From what I remember, Brilliants were going for like 4 mil...which is quite a bit more than 2.5 mil, but not quite double it :)

KevinNU7
03-31-2004, 10:57 AM
Outstanding+0 with no experience should go for $2.5M
Brillaints+0 with no experience should go for $3.5M

The_herd
03-31-2004, 06:53 PM
Kevin's right. Most Brilliants I see go somewhere in the $3.4M-$3.6 range. A lot of them are posted with a starting bid of $3.0M. Some of the bidding wars do send them up to the $3.8-$4.0 range, but thats the way it works.

I really think you get more bang for your buck with a brilliant.

Mr. Wednesday
03-31-2004, 11:13 PM
No question you get more bang for your buck... an extra $1 MM for about five weeks of training works out to $200k / week!

I might have to get into that tier of training at some point, it looks like there's great money to be made there.
