Ok...my team is going to be stuck in Div. V for one more season, it looks like, and here's my plan...
I've got one IM at Formidable, once he pops to Outstanding, I'm going to sell him. By the middle of next season, I should have two more Outstanding midfielders to sell, so I'll be sitting on about 4 million if I save it. I want to upgrade two areas of my team - Forward (current is Passable/Passable w/ Excellent Set Pieces) and Goalid (current is above mid, but not quite high Solid). I was hoping to get a studly goalie (~Outstanding/Magnificent), and probably a Formidable forward. It looks like the Goalie is going to cost me ~4 mil, and the forward about 1 mil. What order should I upgrade in? Current ratings -

This is with the goalie in poor form.

Dola - Also, I plan to sell the Passable Scoring/Passing forward when I upgrade there...by then he should have Formidable or Outstanding Set Pieces. How much do you think he'd go for?

It's a tough call, as you definately need an upgrade at both offense and defense. I'd say it depends on the other teams in your series.
Then again, I assume you train playmaking. If so, defense won't quite matter as much when you dominate the midfield. You might want to buy the forward first and then go with the keeper.

it's easier to raise the 1 mil for a formidable striker than to raise 4 mil for a brilliant+ keeper.
Not necessarily. He can spend $1 mil, hire some economists to get extra money for his remaining $3 mil and get back to $4 mil failry quickly....

Good point. If I've got Spring Grove style money, how fast do economists help me accrue more?

actually my post assumed you'd have the money to get either before mid season. if you won't be able to get the keeper before week 5-8 of next season but you're able to get the forward now, I'd get the striker first.
both spots need improvement. from what I gathered by your post, you're selling 3 outstanding middies. 1 soon, and 2 more around midseason.
if that's right than odds are you won't be able to afford the keeper you want until mid season 22 closes in while you can afford the striker earlier without hurting your keeper purchase aside from maybe 1 week.
I'd get the striker since that will give you a boost to your offense and get your keeper when you sell the other 2 middies.
I don't know how much you have so I don't know what's 'doable' in the immediate future.
either way it seems you'll have both by mid season. I'd get whichever you could first unless there's like 1 weeks difference. ie:
if you can get either a formidable striker in week 1 or a brilliant keeper in week 2 or something like that, I'd hold out for the keeper. I actually agree with YoSoySean (after reading his post and then mine again ;)) that the choice really does depend on you opponents for the upcoming season.

What do they look like with your goalie in good form? What formation are you playing?

Symmetrical 3-5-2...in good form, I'm Solid/Excellent for the solo wingback side, Excellent/Formidable for the CD side.

Well, I have to keep Zheng Kai-Chow for now.....He'll end up sold when I am ready early in a season to get multiple prospects for IM training. It's bloody hard going when you were very bad at the game early on. Kai-Chow, Mcalister, Mehan are all home pulls... And if I could have done better on Crocker..... They could all be further ahead :(.
My goal more than anything else is just to get three starting IM's that can continue to start for me for a very long time.

That's a good goal...by the time I sell these guys, my current 'trainees' should be Excellent...I intend to keep them until they're old and grey :)
I might switch to winger training at the end of this next season...it depends. My goal originally was to buy 3 uber trainees with great secondaries, train them up to whatever level I wanted to keep them at (brilliant+), then switch training regimes. I think that's the best way. I don't have the uber-trainees yet though...
