(CNN) -- Reality TV star and former model Anna Nicole Smith was pronounced dead Thursday after being taken to a Florida hospital after being found unconscious in her hotel room, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case told CNN.

Smith, 39, collapsed at a south Florida hotel and was taken to a local hospital, according to news reports.

TMZ.com had reported that Smith collapsed at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood just after 2 p.m. ET.

According to reports, Smith was found unresponsive in her hotel room.

Smith was involved in paternity suit regarding the parentage of her daughter, Danielynn, as well as other disputes, including ones regarding a house she stayed at in the Bahamas around the time she gave birth.

Earlier this week, Smith was included in a class-action lawsuit against a company, TrimSpa, for which she has worked as a spokesperson. TrimSpa makes a product it claims leads to substantial weight loss. The lawsuit alleges the marketing of the product, TrimSpa X32, was false or misleading.

Smith's son, Daniel Wayne Smith, died at age 20 just days after the birth of Smith's daughter. Pathologist Cyril Wecht said a lethal dose of methadone and antidepressants caused cardiac dysrhythmia, leading to his death.

I haven't read a single article or speculation on the cause of death, but I have to assume that the birth/paternity suit, son dying, and TrimSpa lawsuit provided plenty of reason to pop some pills or do other things which caused her to collapse. It's not like she was that strong a person to begin with.

Well, considering she was sleeping with at least one attorney already ... hmm ... well crap, there's actual several ways to go with that consideration & most of them lead to some punchline.

In all seriousness though, I feel sorry for the recently born baby she had. Already the subject of a nasty custody dispute, depending upon the contents of her will and anything that was in the wills that she inherited from herself in the past, this kid could become anything from the hotly contested meal ticket for at least two guys to a child that nobody actually wants (depending upon what was motivating the two possible dads).

I think this is a really sad thing. Regardless of her celebrity status, and peculiarities, she was a human being with feelings, a past, hopes and dreams. It's a damn shame that she had to lose her son before she died. I am quite sure that has a lot to do with her death.

Pathetic attempts at humor are a perfectly valid response to stressful situations. It's a coping mechanism. I just think many of the board members are far more deeply affected by this than they even know right now, much less care to admit.

Included among her hopes was to marry a 90 year old billionaire, and she dreamed of winning a court battle so his family wouldn't get a penny of his money.

You don't know shit about whether or not her son's death led to this. For all we know, she didn't care about him at all.

I'm someone who took more than a moment of reflection at hearing the news. I laughed at her train wreck reality show. (one of the only reality shows I ever watched, because of how ridiculous the damned thing was) I made plenty of jokes about her. And her death saddens me, because of the things you mention up there. She was a person and it's horrible and tragic to see what has happened to her.

But I'm not agreeing with the your "pathetic attempts at humor" angle. First off, many of them haven't been pathetic. They've been funny and very well put. Second off, lets not make her out to be Mother Theresa. It's a tragic death, but she was a women who got fame by showing her big boobs, got rich by golddigging her way through a senior citizen, had a kid with five potential fathers and lived the last years of her life relishing in the image she created for herself.

The jokes are ok and I'm looking forward to reading more.

FWIW: I hope to God my wake doesn't include a bunch of serious people in dark suits giving people nasty looks who try to crack a joke or two. I hope there are plenty of jokes, plenty of funny/pathetic stories told about me and that there is plenty of laughter. Maybe that's just me. . .

My wife told me about this a short time ago and I said, 'no way'. One cannot dream up a movie script that matches the bizzareness of her life. But know the entertainment world, her sleazy lawyer is probably handing out bids for a tv movie. My wife's prediction was intentional OD, my vote was that she had a hit put on her but we all know that it would be ruled accidental OD regardless what the truth is. She should have died on the Bahamas, that way no one will ever know anything.

This has the potential to grown into a very big story, between the two questionable deaths, the money at stake, the paternity battle, and all. Her lawyer/husband looks really suspicious with all that has happened and what he could stand to gain.

Which, if true, makes it hard to understand why he didn't make sure they had an enforceable marriage. From what I've read, they basically had a ceremony that does not meet the qualifications for a valid marriage. If anything, it sounds more like he was doing whatever he could to muddy up the paternity issue, as opposed to setting her up for a windfall in his favor at a later time.

I don't know; the guy has obviously been milking her for years, but I'm not sure if I see anything more than someone in desperate need of help and a lawyer/friend eager to play that role and enjoy the ride and all the benefits that come with it.

Okay, now I have to admit that I didn't have this option in the paternity pool.

http://apnews.myway.com//article/20070209/D8N6CLKG0.html

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor said Friday that he had a decade-long affair with Anna Nicole Smith and may be her infant daughter's father.

The claim by Prince Frederick von Anhalt comes amid a paternity suit over Smith's 5-month-old daughter, Dannielynn. The birth certificate lists Dannielynn's father as attorney Howard K. Stern, but former Smith boyfriend Larry Birkhead is waging a legal challenge, saying he is the father.

"If you go back from September, she wasn't with one of those guys, she was with me," von Anhalt told The Associated Press in an interview Friday.

He said he would file a lawsuit if Dannielynn is turned over to Stern or Birkhead.

Von Anhalt, 59, and Gabor, 90, have been married for more than 20 years.

Gabor, a onetime sex symbol and star of such 1950s films as "Moulin Rouge" and "Queen of Outer Space," has been in declining health in recent years and suffered a stroke in 2005. She was partially paralyzed in a car crash in 2002.

Von Anhalt, who is Gabor's eighth husband, said he and Smith first met in the 1990s when Smith was still married to elderly oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II. He said Smith approached him and Gabor at the Plaza Hotel in New York.

"She was a very big fan of Zsa Zsa and wanted to be like Zsa Zsa," he said. "She wanted to be a princess."

He said the two started an affair soon after, meeting over the years in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. For much of that time, he said, Smith urged him to make her a princess like his wife.

But short of divorcing the actress, he said the only solution would have been adopting Smith. Von Anhalt said he did consider that and even filled out adoption papers, but Gabor refused to sign them.

HOLLYWOOD, Florida (CNN) -- Anna Nicole Smith did not appear to be a victim of foul play, according to preliminary results of an autopsy Friday.

The cause and manner of death were not determined, however, and the investigation remains open.

Dr. Joel A. Perper, chief medical examiner of Broward County, Florida, said there was no indication of blunt-force trauma, asphyxiation or other physical trauma.

Perper said his office is awaiting results of toxicological and other tests, but there were no drugs in her stomach.

"There are a number of possibilities," he said, including natural causes, a drug reaction or some combination of causes.

Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger said no evidence suggests a crime occurred.

Tiger said no illegal drugs were found in Smith's hotel room. He said prescription drugs were found, but would not name them.

He said police were still analyzing surveillance tapes from the hotel, but so far had seen nothing unusual.

While the autopsy was taking place, a California judge ruled Smith's body must be preserved until at least February 20, when a hearing will be held to resolve a paternity dispute over the celebrity's 5-month-old daughter.

Superior Court Judge Robert Schneider's ruling came as new information surfaced about Smith's last days, during which she fell ill, according to sources.

It could take weeks for tests to determine what killed the 39-year-old reality TV star, Playboy playmate and former Guess jeans model. (Watch Smith's improbable journey through life )

"We don't have supermen or superwomen working in our office," Perper said.

Smith died Thursday at a South Florida hospital after being discovered unconscious in her hotel room.

Authorities investigating Smith's death retrieved a "large amount" of prescription medicine from her hotel room, law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation said. The sources did not characterize any of the drugs as illegal.

The prescription drugs were in the name of her lawyer and boyfriend, Howard K. Stern, and included Valium and antibiotics, a law enforcement source said. Over-the-counter drugs, including cold and flu medicines, also reportedly were found.

Smith checked into the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, on Monday with Stern.

On Thursday, a private nurse found her charge in bed not breathing and called Smith's bodyguard, then Stern, a law enforcement source said. At 1:38 p.m., the nurse called the front office and hotel security called 911, Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger said.

Before rescue workers arrived, Smith's bodyguard performed CPR on her, Tiger said. She was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where she was pronounced dead at 2:49 p.m. (Watch the police chief describe the rescue effort )

Late Thursday, police said the hotel room had been cleared, and authorities carried bags of evidence out of the building.

Smith's attorney, Ron Rale, told reporters his client had been suffering from flulike symptoms for the last couple of days. (Watch what might have led to Smith's death )

In an interview with The Associated Press, Rale said Smith had been sick for several days with a fever and was still depressed over the September death of her son, Daniel.

Meanwhile, "Entertainment Tonight's" Mark Steines, the last person to interview her, told CNN that Smith had to be placed in an ice bath Tuesday after her fever reached 105 degrees.

Her fever came down, Steines said, but on Wednesday she slipped and fell in the bathtub. When Stern and her nurse went to check on her, "she seemed a little bit out of it" but didn't appear to have suffered any significant injuries, Steines said.

"That led to yesterday," Steines said Friday, "when after taking a nap, I believe, she never came to and never woke up." (Watch how Smith told Steines she was still having nightmares about her son's death )

In a statement Thursday, Smith's sister, Donna Hogan, said: "We are saddened and heartbroken by my sister's death. No matter what our differences have been over the years, Anna was still our blood and she will be missed terribly.

"She was a woman who was determined to get out of her small town in Texas and make a name for herself."

Hogan went on to say that the death of Smith's son last year "left her deeply saddened, a sadness she hid from everyone." Dannielynn Hope "is now without a mother," Hogan wrote.

In September, Smith gave birth to Dannielynn Hope in the Bahamas. Her son, Daniel, was found dead in his mother's hospital room three days later.
A life of celebrity and tribulations

Smith was known as much for her sometimes-turbulent life off-camera as she was for her show-business endeavors. (Smith rose to fame after dropping out of school)

The former topless dancer in Houston, Texas, made her first appearance in Playboy in 1992, was named Playmate of the Year in 1993 and appeared in Guess jeans ads and movies.

In 2002, Smith launched a reality television program, "The Anna Nicole Show," on the E! Entertainment network. At one point, it was the network's highest-rated program.

She raised eyebrows in 1994 by marrying 89-year-old Texas oil magnate Howard Marshall II, who had an estate valued at $1.6 billion. He died the next year, and until her death Smith waged a legal battle over the inheritance that included a 2006 U.S. Supreme Court ruling. (Watch tributes to the former Playmate )

"It's way too early for me to even guess what's going to happen in terms of other claims on behalf of the child," said Rusty Hardin, a Houston attorney who represents the Marshall family.

Earlier this week, Smith was included in a class-action lawsuit against TrimSpa, a company for which she was a spokeswoman in commercials and ads touting her weight loss.

TrimSpa makes a product it claims leads to substantial weight loss. The lawsuit alleges the marketing of the product, TrimSpa X32, was false or misleading. (Full story)

In the paternity dispute over Dannielynn Hope, the judge declined to approve a motion requesting emergency DNA collection from Smith's body because DNA samples are routinely collected during autopsies.

Larry Birkhead, an entertainment reporter and photographer who has claimed to be the girl's father, filed an emergency order to obtain DNA samples to determine paternity, said his attorney, Debra Opri.

The judge ordered Smith's body -- which remains in Florida -- be preserved pending a February 20 hearing on a variety of issues, including when DNA samples will be collected from Dannielynn Hope, and when testing will be done to determine the identity of the girl's father.

Birkhead did not attend the Friday hearing because he was too upset about Smith's death, Opri said.

Asked why Smith's DNA was necessary in a paternity dispute, Opri responded, "We do not want a bait and switch of a child." She called it a "legitimate" concern.

Rale, who was in court to oppose the DNA order, called Opri's concerns nonsense.

Smith and Stern have both said that Stern is Dannielynn's father. Stern has said the couple planned to marry, but it was unclear whether they had.

Well, you can probably cross Edwards and Obama off the list, they're pretty squeaky clean. I'd keep Clinton on there, given her family history.

He took some advice from Woody Allen.

I'm just more amazed that we've got a 59 year old guy married to a 90 year old. Zsa Zsa looked good for a while, but even if' she's looking great for her age at this point... that means she is looking about 70 years old.

After DNA test, Birkhead ruled Smith's baby's dad

<!--endclickprintexclude-->
NASSAU, Bahamas (CNN) -- Larry Birkhead is the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby daughter, Dannielynn, a Bahamian judge ruled Tuesday.
"Everybody, I hate to be the one to tell you this -- but I told you so," Birkhead said outside the court as he smiled and threw his hands into the air.
When asked what's next, he said, "I'm going to the toy store."
Crowds applauded in front of the courthouse as Birkhead, Smith's former boyfriend, made the announcement, and Birkhead teared up as he thanked his supporters. (Watch Birkhead be the one to say 'I told you so' (javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/law/2007/04/10/sot.birkhead.father.cnn','2009/04/09');) http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/1.5/main/icon_video.gif (javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/law/2007/04/10/sot.birkhead.father.cnn','2009/04/09');))
A DNA test confirmed him as the father with 99.99 percent certainty, said Dr. Michael Baird, who performed the test and revealed the results to a closed session of a Bahamian court Tuesday.
The court had ordered DNA testing to determine the father of the child, who has been at the center of a paternity dispute since she was born in a Bahamian hospital in September.
Smith had publicly identified Howard K. Stern, her lawyer and live-in companion, as the baby's father and listed him as the father on the child's birth certificate.
Stern hugged Birkhead and said he is not going to fight him for custody. (Watch Stern express his disappointment (javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/law/2007/04/10/sot.smith.dna.howard.stern.cnn','2009/04/09');) http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/1.5/main/icon_video.gif (javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/law/2007/04/10/sot.smith.dna.howard.stern.cnn','2009/04/09');))
"I'm going to do whatever I can to make sure that he gets sole custody," Stern said.
When asked when Birkhead would get custody of the 7-month-old girl, who has been living with Stern in Nassau, Stern said he wanted there to be a "gradual transition."
He said Birkhead could come to the house any time and spend as much time as he wants with his daughter.
Virgie Arthur, Smith's estranged mother who lives in Texas, said she was happy with the outcome. "All I care about is the safety and well-being of my little granddaughter," she said. (Watch Smith's mom explain what she plans to do next (javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/law/2007/04/10/sot.virgie.dna.cnn','2009/04/09');) http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/1.5/main/icon_video.gif (javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/law/2007/04/10/sot.virgie.dna.cnn','2009/04/09');))
Another hearing is set for Friday to discuss the custody issue, which involves Stern, Birkhead and Arthur. It was unclear how Tuesday's news might affect that.
Birkhead sits in a good position to take Dannielynn home soon, according to B. J. Bernstein, a defense attorney and CNN legal analyst.
"It's very difficult for grandparents ... to trump the natural, biological parent," Bernstein said.
Birkhead, an entertainment reporter and photographer, said shortly after the baby's birth that he accompanied Smith to doctors' appointments until a "minor disagreement" took place while she was pregnant.
In September, Stern said on CNN's "Larry King Live" that he and Smith were confident he was the father, and "based on the timing of when the baby was born, there really is no doubt in either of our minds."
Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband, Frederic von Anhalt, also said he could be the father.
Dannielynn stands to inherit millions of dollars from the estate of Smith's late husband, oil tycoon Howard Marshall II. Until her death, Smith was involved in a legal battle over the inheritance.
After a protracted dispute over the burial of Smith's body, Stern and Birkhead began battling in Bahamian courts over the child, and a judge ordered that a swab be taken from the girl for DNA testing.
Stern then asked the Bahamas' Court of Appeal to block release of those test results, arguing that the judge had misinterpreted the law and his order invaded the girl's privacy.
Earlier this month, appellate judges questioned why Stern was raising legal claims after giving consent to the DNA swabbing.
Stern was ordered to pay $10,000 in court costs for the abandoned appeal.
