You give me a popcorn ball for Halloween and I'll light off a bunch of Saturn missiles in your front yard during the 4th of July.

Have no fear -- they will be long gone by Halloween.
They might not make it past MNF.

You do realize these are relatively easy to make?
No reason you can't just whip up a batch any time you desire one.

Even if I could get the taste and consistency right, I don't believe that I could recreate the perfect sphere shape.

I thought Popcorn Balls was when your balls were smacking against the rear of a young lass, making the sound of popcorn popping.
"Oh, yeah, I'm really working you, baby. You hear them popcorn balls?"

Shape them around your balls, duh. Then get the lady to eat it off.
edit: But not too far.

Then you turn him over so your balls are slapping against his. That's when it gets REAL hot.

Reasons why these delicious bastards are only available around Halloween:
1.) Less than 30% of people, who can identify what they are, actually like them.
2.) More than 50% of people think they refer to ball slapping.
3.) ????
4.) Profit?

I used to ask this about Peeps back when they only came out during holidays.

Some things should stay holiday food, a la Peeps. I'll be goddamned if I need to have those things in the house year round.
But popcorn balls? Come on man, just make some at home. They're much better that way.

To whit, a blog I read regularly posted this today:
Popcorn Balls
Makes 6, each about the size of a small grapefruit
Ingredients
5 oz. bag of plain popped popcorn (lightly salted is ok, don't use butter flavored or the regular salted)
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup butter
2 cups confectioner's sugar
1 cup mini marshmallows
Few drops of food coloring (optional)
Directions
1. Butter a large mixing bowl and put aside.
2. Combine corn syrup, butter, sugar, and marshmallows and heat in a saucepan over low heat.
3. Stir until the mixture comes to a boil and remove from heat.
4. Pour the popcorn into the mixing bowl, and then cover the popcorn with the butter/sugar/marshmallow mixture. Gently stir and coat each kernel.
5. Let it cool so you can handle it (about a minute), then butter/grease your hands and make the balls. Let them cool all the way and you're done.
Really, it's not much different from Rice Krispie treats. Hmm Rice Krispie treats, I could totally go for some of those, maybe tomorrow I'll make some before I go to work.

Actually, the company that makes them for Halloween started this past year making "popcorn eggs" for Easter. That's two holidays now!

I'm not a huge fan of popcorn or balls.
Plus, they're too messy.
