It's really hard to believe that an actual meaningful game kicks off in about 40 hours or so.

Should be a good game, hopefully Steelers looking good in regular season.

You're going to go to all the trouble of adding the extra four words to pimp the Steelers, and you can't even add an extra three letters for maximum pompous grandiosity?

For shame. ;)

Steelers' James Harrison ... do not disturb (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09252/996496-66.stm)

Nice article on James Harrison.

They came at linebacker James Harrison in waves, and he flicked them aside as one might expect the NFL defensive player of the year to do. • One after the other, Harrison rejected them as if they were scatbacks trying to block his path to the quarterback. Only these did not occur on a football field, they were part of his swag for what he did on football fields last season. • They were offers of money in trade for his appearance or his autograph or his endorsement. It is the reward for the remarkable season Harrison had in 2008. • Yet, the two-time Steelers MVP was a hard sell, turning down "about 25, 30" such offers, according to agent Bill Parise. His reasoning: "James is James," Parise said. "James is not comfortable in a lot of those settings, and there's not a need to put him in them anymore."

The lack of need to grovel for outside income came in April when he signed a six-year contract worth $51.2 million, about $20 million of that in bonus money.

"I turned down a whole bunch of stuff," Harrison said. "Go here, do this and do that. I don't want to do nothing. I'm not interested, especially now, I don't really need it.

"I'm happy with the contract I have. And the kind of money I would get from that versus what I'd have to do, I'd probably have to sit there and talk to people."

Oh, no, not talk to people! Think skipping the White House visit and a chance to meet the president was a show of disrespect? Those who know Harrison claim it's just not so. He's private and admittedly shy. This overnight sensation at age 31 often does not react well to his newfound celebrity.
PG graphic: The Sack Master
PG photos: Anatomy of history

Two years ago, he was just another backup outside linebacker with the Steelers. Today, he owns their season sack record with 16, was league defensive player of the year and author of the longest play in Super Bowl history, a breathtaking 100-yard interception return for a touchdown to end the first half and very likely stem Arizona's upset bid.

There's also an impending book. Yes, this shy, private linebacker collaborated on a biography, perhaps because he had to talk only to its author, Bill Moushey (with Bill Parise). Titled "Never Give Up," a snarling Harrison is shown on its cover. It was Moushey, a former Post-Gazette writer, who suggested Harrison's shyness.

"I think he puts a somewhat impenetrable shield up to keep people away from him, borne out of an intense shyness," Moushey said. "He won't go in front of crowds, doesn't like to do that kind of stuff, unless it's involving kids. His fear of flying combined with his shyness has caused him pretty much to turn down anything people throw his way. He's been offered all kinds of headline appearances and he just doesn't do it."

Harrison, who is so intense he nearly knocked his quarterback out for the season by pushing 345-pound tackle Max Starks into Ben Roethlisberger's leg on the last day of training camp, also has a soft side. Of the field, of course.

"Absolutely," says end Brett Keisel, who plays next to Harrison on the right side of the NFL's No. 1 defense. "Watch him around his little boy and my son. My son was out here a couple of weeks ago; James came over and kissed him on the head.

"He's a great guy off the field, but on the field he's a complete animal. That's what we want. He's a big reason why we were great last year. His return in the Super Bowl speaks for itself. He has the heart to go that far -- that's a long way to run, but that's what he's built on, all heart."

Speaking from the heart, then, here are Harrison's thoughts, recounted for us, as he intercepted Kurt Warner's pass and ran with it. He already has acknowledged he was supposed to blitz on that play but saw something and hung back.

"After I picked it off, I didn't see anybody in front of me, I thought I had a clean touchdown. I'm like, 'I'm about to go.' All of a sudden there's a sea of white jerseys and then I saw a bunch of red jerseys and I said, 'Oh my goodness.' "

He needed some help and got it with blocks by quick-reacting teammates Deshea Townsend, Ike Taylor and LaMarr Woodley, among others.

"After Deshea blocked Kurt Warner I said, 'OK, I'm good.' He blocks him, then I got a bump from behind, I guess that was Ike hitting someone, I don't know who it was. Then somebody came from the side, a lineman or something. Then there was a running back [Woodley] knocked down, then another lineman after [Woodley] knocked him down, then a receiver. Like I said, I never saw Larry Fitzgerald until he actually hit me."

That occurred as he approached the end zone and wound up rolling onto Fitzgerald for the touchdown. Had he been short, the half would have ended without a chance at kicking a field goal. As with Franco Harris' Immaculate Reception, he might have had time to run out of bounds and given his team a shot at three points rather than gamble it all on the end zone or nothing.

"I'm not even thinking about running out of bounds," Harrison said. "I figured there was not enough time left, that was my whole reason for dropping back because they had to either throw a quick in or out into the end zone because they could not afford to get caught in bounds; they had no timeouts left."

Had it not been for Fitzgerald's late scores and Santonio Holmes' winning touchdown catch, Harrison might have added Super Bowl MVP to his late-blooming resume. No matter. He's happy with what he has, but in no way content. He's as determined to show he's not a fluke as much as he was determined to make it in the first place.

"He's more motivated to prove his critics wrong, that he might be a one-year wonder," said friend and safety Tyrone Carter. "He's always been motivated, but this will give him an extra edge as well because you know he's going to have naysayers: 'He had one good year, what's he going to do once he got money?' "

Harrison, who was back working out at the Steelers' facility days after they won Super Bowl XLIII, will tell you what he's going to do, or at least plans to do.

"I believe anything can be topped. That's why they make records. How do I do that? I come in and train and get better in every area, learning defense, what my position is as far as where I'm supposed to be on certain defenses to better help myself and my teammates. It may not be me getting better numbers, it may be me being in better position to help other people."

Just as long as those people are his teammates, or the kids he serves through the Beaver County YMCA without fanfare. The rest? Please leave him alone, even if you come carrying gifts. Harrison does not want gifts and he certainly does not want to have to talk to anyone to get them.

Vastly improved? Am I missing something in their passing game?

They have the same offensive lineman and QBs which is not a bad thing. TEs also the same but with the addition of Jared Cook who mnay say was the best TE drafted this year and has shown great hands and WRs speed 4.45 they are improved here. The RBs are improved as well with a leaner White, more experienced Johnson and the addition of Michigan St. stand out Javon Ringer to spell them here they are improved. Now at Wr they have replaced Justin McCariens with ex-Steeler wdeout Washington and have replaced Brandon Jones with Kenny Brit. Justin Gage had a great preseason and is healthy. Also, there is a few other WRs that were added in the draft late that appear to be able to contribute. So, I "vastly"{ improved maybe a strecth but they certainly are not hampered like in the past by a poor passing game any more.

Alright, I can buy the "improved" logic. I just thought I was missing something when I read "vastly improved." (I have Chris Johnson and LenDale White in leagues, so I'm banking on them running a lot).

Steeler fans ruin watching games at bars. No other fanbase has 40 year old men shrieking like teenage girls at a boyband concert after six yard runs up the middle or false starts by the other team. Terrible.

[QUOTE=Galaril;2113504]The RBs are improved as well .

One could perhaps make a reasonable argument that their RB's are, I don't know, the same guys? Since, you know, they're the same guys.

Javon Ringer .

4th string, likely to be inactive

Now at Wr they have replaced Justin McCariens with ex-Steeler wdeout Washington and have replaced Brandon Jones with Kenny Brit. Justin Gage had a great preseason and is healthy..

Their solution at WR was to bring in a #3 caliber guy to be #1. He's been injured, so give them a pass on that not working out.

Kenny Britt has proven what? I think he will be better than Brandon Jones, but he has yet to prove even that.

The bottom line is Justin Gage is the #1 WR. This is never good.

Also, there is a few other WRs that were added in the draft late that appear to be able to contribute. .

Only Dominique Edison made the roster. This is going to help give them a better passing game?

they certainly are not hampered like in the past by a poor passing game any more.

Sorry, none of the things you mention appear to likely to make a difference. The possible exception is Britt. He could really be something special - but even WRs who end up being that rarely make a difference as rookies.

Bottom line: A rational examination suggests the Titans will still be hampered by a poor passing game.

And it has rubbed off on their other team the Pens. Pens fans use to be great to talk to, now since they are good again you can see the ones who have come on board who act like Steeler fans. I imagine that will happen with the Pirates too, but again since they suck, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who admits they are a Pirate fan...that shit aint cool by them.

You maybe right on most of what you said. I would correct you on the RBs that Ringer played great albiet preseaon and is going to be active to return kicks and is the #3 RB passing Henry. Edison is looking like he could be a real surprise and will probably be the #3 WR tonight. Lastly years recievers were woeful and so they are now definitely improved and in any case the Steelers I think will offer d ecent challenge on the defense. The bottom line is I think the Titans can score more on the Steelers D than the Steelers offense can score on the Titans D. I will agree that the Titans weakest area is the passing game and the Steelers weakest area is there o-line. Remember last year the Titans sacked Ben 5 times and caused 4 turnovers though it was in Ten. that was without Haynesworth.

I have not been around the main Steeler fan base either, and I am sure that they act like asshats, but this can be said of any fan base of any team in any sport. Especially one that is winning.

There's actually a pretty big contingent that believes Cook will be the best TE of this class.

Can you quote them?

Even if that is true (and the people that matter think he'll be the third best TE, which is still pretty good) its not like he's going to give them a huge improvement in their passing game this year. Reasons for that being that the Titans have a pretty good passing-to-the-TE game already. Without checking, I'd guess they were among the best in the league last season. Because they had pretty good TE's last year (and lousy WRs). Those TE are still there. Cook has virtually no chance to improve that aspect of their offense (one they are trying to downgrade, mind you). And ZERO chance to help that aspect of their passing game tonight (he's not playing).

Galaril - you in part make my point for me. I had heard Edison looks like a steal and will be a real player, along with Britt looking like the best WR in the class. But, having one rookies starting at WR and another at #3 means you are weak at WR. They just don't make much of an impact.

I find the discussion of "most annoying fans" funny. I think people tend to think that the fans of the teams they hate the most are the most annoying. And when those teams are successful, their fans enjoying it are even more annoying.

Randy Moss was even better!

I agree - if Britt is as good as a rookie as Rice or Moss, the Titans will have a vastly improved passing game.

If, however, he proves not to be as good as the 2 all-pro-as-rookie WRs of the last 25 years, the Titans could indeed be limited in the passing game yet again.

Actually considering that Jones was their #2, Britt is almost assured of being an upgrade.

Sure, but are the odds in favor of the Titans having drafted two HoF WRs (not all of which have good first seasons mind you) or having drafted typical rookie receiver 1 and 2? The Titans' WRs are going to be a huge weakness this season just like last season unless they get uncommon production from WRs that haven't proven themselves to be starting caliber ones.

I do think he'll be the best WR from this class (since Crabtree is looking more and more like a WR from the 2010 class. I also think he's a rookie WR, which means he'll have some games where he looks like a HoF'er, and some where you wonder if he is dressed.

Only Dominique Edison made the roster. This is going to help give them a better passing game?

Sorry, none of the things you mention appear to likely to make a difference. The possible exception is Britt. He could really be something special - but even WRs who end up being that rarely make a difference as rookies.

Bottom line: A rational examination suggests the Titans will still be hampered by a poor passing game.

1) Stevens is a solid blocking TE and a long term project. Cook may be 4, but they run alot of 2 TE sets, so I wouldn't be shocked if he's active.
People have said he may be the best due to his camp perfomances and the potential he's shown. Word is he's been making 'circus' catches left and right.

2) They added Ringer to their RBs, and he's been a steal. Adding them gives a EarthWindFire-esque combo, with Johnson's speed, White's strength/power, and Ringer's shiftyness.

3) Gage is their No.1, Washington 2, Britt 3 (if I remember right).
The Titans have big play guys in Gage and Washington, which is what they need. Washington stretches the field, and Gage gets plays by being 'forgotten'. Britt shows potential, but needs time, and for now, that's fine. The Titans run 2 TE sets alot, so Scaife and Crumpler will be getting most of the looks in the passing game.
Our passing game isn't or 'main' option, it's just designed to be efficient and good enough to warrant respect, opening the run.

4) The young receivers have shown alot of promise during the preseason, and Edison is only one of the good changes they made there. They also released Williams (at last) giving them the ability to work these young guys in. This year was a VERY deep year for WRs, so it shouldn't be a surprise for a team to have 2 starting caliber guys from this year's draft in the works.

Though I respect your logic, I must disagree.

The passing game never truly 'hampered' the Titans, as when they needed to rely upon it, it came through for the most part. The one notable exception was against the Jets... But when Favre is ripping your secondary a new one, it almost doesn't matter what you can do on offense...

Their passing game is much better, as the depth has expanded a great deal, and the potential will show flashes that will have an impact. Remember, Johnson and White surprised alot of folks to begin with, which led to them doing so well. Now teams expect them and will try and stack the box. Cook, Ringer, Britt and Washingtton will not allow them to do so.

NiteMaestro
09-10-2009, 07:18 PM
Quick word about Cook.

He may not be considered the "best" TE, considering I don't know how well he does blocking. But as a receiving TE, he's been scary good for a rookie.

+ Edison #3? Not yet... Britt will back up Washington, I'm sure of that... Maybe he's considered a better slot guy though... I wouldn't be surprised.

+ Just checked, Ringer is no. 4 RB, apparently Henry has finally shown something...?

Good job by Collinsworth for pointing that out after Michaels said "no harm, no foul." I've always hated how commentators refuse to point out when their partners say something stupid.

I didn't see the play (heard it on the radio). Holding is usually a spot foul and you cant get a first down on a hold (just like you can't get an INT with "Dirty hands")...replay the down and march off 10 yards from teh spot.

I have a hard time seeing Seymour win this one. If he doesn't play along, Al can just sit him for a year and Seymour won't move towards free agency. I could see Al saying "You play with us, or no one" pretty easily. Who is going to blink first between Davis and Seymour? I'm not sure that Davis even has eyelids.

NFL owners tend to take a hard line on this issue - if they let players nullify a trade by not showing up, they effectively give all NFL players an absolute no trade clause without collectively bargaining it (and getting something back in return). Both teams (and the entire league) would give up Richard Seymour before they would give up the ability to trade players they have under contract.

You tried to goad someone into an argument, not once, but twice with your insults, then you have the balls to get pissed when someone calls you out on it?

You must be a very unhappy person. Or a Bengals fan. ZOING!

Who was I goading into anything? You're saying I was intentionally trying to inflame EVERY SINGLE shitzburgh fan? Ok maybe, but still ;) I stand by the fact that I was insulting the team, which is not a direct attack on anyone. I called out Muns for a direct personal attack at me. Since he doesn't know me (not having sen him post much at all) I assume he simply had nothing better than a personal attack to use and I pointed out his error. I'm really not seeing what the issue is here other than some folks thinking I'm just being too mean to people. They can get over it.

I am not an unhappy person at all, I am very secure in who I am and what I love and believe in. I'm also, as someone else pointed out in another thread, very abrasive. You either accept me as I am or you put me on ingore and we never have to have such a discussion ever again ;)

Ok, I know you're really not this stupid. SO honestly, you protracting out this argument just to be a fuckwit is rather silly.

No shit it is also a city, however, we're in a thread about the NFL, we're talking about two teams playing on opening night, one of which is the Stealers.

Now in all seriousness, if you can't figure out I'm talking about the team and not the city then you're about as bright as a dead light bulb buried in that landfill the stealers call home ;)

There are two options here A) muns knew exactly what he was doing and is simply an asshole looking to rile me up, or B) he honestly thought I meant the city and in such a case needs to learn to comprehend what he reads.

Either way I'm not the dipstick in the situation and I corrected the initial error by said poster.

Stop causing problems =)

So I'm the moron because someone tried to insult where I live when the topic of cities wasn't even brought up?...k, thanks for helping me understand that you can't read for comprehension any better than he can ;)

If the best he can do is insult the city I live in maybe he needs to do what I said before, learn about who you're insulting so you don't make a fracking ass of yourself. ;)

Ok.. I have really been trying to ignore the vitriol you spew, but, really? After the thread where you went heywire about quarterbacks in the first round because of YOUR lack of reading comprehension (making up that it was only about first round picks, not quarterbacks in the draft in general), you're going to pull this bullshit? When you say "fuck shittsbugh" it is completely logical for someone to take that as an attack on the whole city, not just the football team and it's fans... even in a football thread. This happens all the time in sports discussions and you need to settle the fuck down and grow some skin.

I, for one, am looking forward to a number of matchups this weekend (Chicago vs. Green Bay in particular), but I am completely uninterested in the MNF double-header. Seriously, the best we can do is Patriots vs. Bills (blowout) and Chargers vs. Raiders (another blowout)? What genius in the scheduling department thought these would be remotely competitive, even way back early in the year when the schedule was determined?

For some reason the NFL seems to love to screw ESPN's MNF. They always seem to get crap games. Sometimes they luck out because what looks like will be a bad game, turns out to be decent later on.

Sunday Night Football is now the marquee match-up of the week. Green Bay/Chicago should be fun.

I would say that I am looking forward to the Saints/Lions game, but that would be a lie. I am actually afraid of that game. I'm afraid the Lions will get completely blown out (42-10 or such) and, thus, another season will be over before it even begins.

I'm not looking for the Lions to win this week, I'd just like to see them be competitive. I am sick of games where the Lions look like some very bad Division I-AA playing against Florida or USC.

I feel your pain. I am lucky in that I haven't been able to watch a lot of Lions games the past few years (notwithstanding the debacles that inevitably occur on Thanksgiving).

Look for these things to happen in the Lions game:

- Stafford will get hurt
- At least one linebacker and offensive lineman will get hurt
- Lions defense will look like month-old swiss cheese
- Lions will lose 52-13

I still have a soft spot for the Lions (having been born in Michigan), so last season was difficult to stomach, even for me. But the unfortunate truth is that Millen and Co. did so much damage to that franchise, it's going to take time before the Lions resemble an NFL team again. Even in the rags-to-riches NFL I just don't see it happening this year. Will they go winless again? No. Will they be in the running for another #1 overall pick? Probably.

For Patriots / Bills, I can see them thinking "We've got the Patriots who are a big draw, plus Tom Brady's first game back from injury, and with the Bills we've got TO who is a lightning rod that will attract people (those who like and those who hate)". Obviously now they probably wish they could change it, but when they scheduled it they didn't know the OC was going to be fired prior to game 1 or that they'd cut their starting LT before Week 1 (this feels like a Major League plot, like Ralph Wilson wants to move the team to Toronto).

I can't fathom Chargers / Raiders other than, "We need two West Coast teams". I think last year was Arizona / someone West Coastish that didn't look like an appealing game either, so this seems to be tradition. I guess they're figuring a large part of the country will have already gone to sleep by the time the game starts.

I guess I can see the "Tom Brady's Grand Return" angle. Not sure about T.O. though...wasn't the schedule determined/published before Free Agency opened? Not sure...either way it could have worked out better...and Sunday Night does certainly seem to get the better matchups week-in and week-out. Add in the Flex games later in the year and it's easy to see which one is the NFL's red-headed step-child.

Actually ESPN pays $1.1 billion per year for MNF while NBC pays $600 million for SNF. The MNF football game is seen as a more valuable property but network politics play into as well.

ABC lost a bundle on MNF. The ratings a broadcast network can get with MNF aren't high enough to justify the cost whereas MNF brings in enormous cable ratings. Once NBC bought SNF, it was pretty much just the cable networks bidding for MNF and ESPN was willing to overpay to keep it out of the hands of anybody else.

People like to think that the best games are on MNF and SNF but in reality it's usually the third best if that. CBS and Fox get to protect games each week and team's can't play more than X number of games in primetime.

The flex scheduling for SNF is pretty cool but I understand why they don't want to do it for MNF. Moving games from 1 to 7 pm on Sunday isn't nearly as complicated as moving the day.

I actually apologized for something in the other thread, I never backed off that apology in any way. The apology was to Tasan, not you, so your opinion of it isn't relevant anyway, no matter how often you think your opinion on other peoples interactions is required.

I defended my POSITION on the topic because my position was just fine. My overreaction was related to something OTHER than the actual topic of teh discussion and that was what was apologized for.

You're known for being an asshat and a troublemaker when someone disagrees with you. You're known for badgering people with incomplete and misrepresented statements (see everything you just posted). You basically called me a liar and accused me of making up content of a thread when in fact that was not the case.

Frankly you came into this discussion because you seem to have some chip on your shoulder about my posts for whatever reason. I believe you're a real prick, but thats just my personal opinion. Hey now. I think Stafford will be very good, and Calvin can do no wrong as you know. I still cannot fathom how good he was with Reggie Ball as his QB at GT. Unreal. How did GT even get him and not UGA?

Panthers with a 8 minute drive to start the game that ends with a nice cutback TD run by DeAngelo Williams.

Woot. Fantasy points:D

Don't like the toss play on 3rd and 1. Smith is going to be a very good RB but his speed to the outside is not his game. Still, a good drive. Stafford looked very good.

I always hate that play on 3rd and short. Why throw the ball 2 yards back and make it a 3rd and 3?

Jeez, what a comedy of errors by the Bengals.

CJ is a fairly classy & intelligent guy, his college choice was pretty obvious.

And Stafford can't lead starving dogs to fresh meat (no pun intended), he's ultimately a bust looking for a place to happen. He'll put up some numbers on raw ability but he'll never lead a team to a winning record in the NFL even after he leaves the Lions.

Exactly. Maybe if you have a guy who is a pure speed back like Reggie Bush, it makes sense, but not with a between the tackle runner. It hurt them because if he just gets stuffed up the middle I think the Lions end up going for it, but that became 4th and a long 3 instead.

Eagles get hit with a BS interference with the fair catch call. Demps was pushed into the punt returner.

Delhomme, under no pressure at all, throws a terrible pass behind steve smith, interception eagles. F'ing Delhomme.

Detroit forces another 3 and out. Better go wait in line for my playoff tickets now before the rush.

And a HUGE return by Dennis Northcutt to the Saints 15 or so. Very nice play.

Delhomme with a fumble on a sack, the Eagles recover it and run it in for the defensive TD. 10-7 Eagles lead.

Helluva catch by Reggie Wayne on 3rd and 13. Nothing Cox could do there.

As much as I hate Delhomme I do have to thank him for the 10 points he has given the Eagles so far.

People say there is a problem with rookies getting so much money ... I have a problem with Jake Delhomme getting as much money as he just did this offseason. He is so bad.

TD Kevin Smith! Helluva play call there. On 4th and 1, they fake the FB and call the toss. That makes a little more sense.

I have no freaking idea why delhomme didn't just cover the ball and fall down there. What the hell was he trying to do? *sigh*

Anthony Henry picks off Drew Brees on a flea flicker. A play that no one bit on at all.
