View Full Version : Fantasy Football: Keeper League Questions

I'm in a keeper league where we keep a full starting lineup of 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 Def/ST every year. Here's our point system:
33 passing yards = 1
Passing TD = 4
INT, fumble lost = -1
10 rushing/receiving yards = 1
rushing/receiving TD = 6
field goal = 3
PAT = 1
Sack, fumble recovery, INT = 1
PR/KR/Defensive TD = 6
So, after a hearbreaker loss this weekend when I was ahead with Julius Jones playing last night against a guy who had TO...I'm really tempted to part ways with Julius Jones. Last night isn't the only reason I've been tempted to move him...he just doesn't get that many touches in the redzone and as long as Barber is there to steal 3rd down and redzone touches...Jones just isn't going to be a top back. For most of the season, I've had one owner pester me constantly about grabbing Julius Jones and I'm sure I could land Joseph Addai and probably a draft pick (we are allowed to trade future draft picks) for him.
Is that a deal I should do?
My other backs are Chester Taylor, Marion Barber, and Deuce McAllister. Obviously I'm keeping Taylor as my other back.
The other question I have is about my keeper QB. I kept Tom Brady last year and was excited about his prospects until the Branch fiasco started to surface. Anyways, I drafted Rivers solely on his game during Brady's bye week but he's been a pleasant surprise so far this season...even outscoring Brady. I'm starting to think that Rivers is going to be my keeper...am I crazy? Do I try and deal one of them while I still can...I believe our trading deadline is quickly approaching?
Thanks for any input!!

First I'd deal Jones for Addai and a pick. Addai has some upside and in a good offense. Jones to me will not be a long term success. I feel like Dallas would love someone else in there.
You are crazy not to keep Brady in spite of NE completly revamping the WR corps. I'd trade Rivers if you feel compelled to.
edit: of course dealing Jones now may hurt you this season but that is my take from a keeper perspective....addai is the much better prospect going forward and you get a pick. Ideally you wait for a big game from Jones and then make a trade.

I'm in last place right now...so, building for the future is what I'm thinking about. That's why Addai is appealing to me right now. I'm tempted to package Jones and Deuce to the same guy for Addai and TO as my receivers are TERRIBLE!!! I'd probably have to give up a little bit more...but that is something I'm thinking about, too.

Not sure what would compel you to want TO as you are building for the future.

That's how bad my receivers are!!! :)
My receivers right now are:
Horn
Evans
Gabriel
Branch
Moulds
Terrible, I know. Right now, I wouldn't even know who to carryover.

How many teams are in your league? If it is 10 and you think Rivers is or will be a top ten QB then keep him. Your league is similar to ours in scoring but, Rivers is in a batch of 13 QBs that are within 8 pts of each other so, its really a toss them into a hat and pull one out.

There's nothing wrong with that unless you are in an 8 team league.
Branch keep
Gabriel I'd keep
Lee Evans offers hope I guess and if you can draft from the upcoming strong draft class you could be ok.
You can always come up with guys at receiver.

I'm in a 12 team league and I'm dead last in receiver scoring. The problem with my crew is that is the number one guys are either in crappy offenses or have so many other weapons that they are pretty tough to count on week in and week out...see Horn and Evans. Gabriel has never been a starter and "could" a keeper and Branch is currently second fiddle to Jackson and when Engram gets back, could even slide to number 3.

So? You can easily see a scenario next year where Branch and Gabriel put up good numbers.
If your goal is to line your team with studs you don't have any. What you have are two players with decent potential.

I'd keep Gabriel, Branch. I'd move Evans up the list if Buffalo had a quality QB.

What rkmsuf said...
I could probably list 24 receivers right now that I'd probably rather have than the group you listed but, I could see some guys being those top 24 next year, (or even later this year)

Would you list Owens as one of those 24?? I would. Why not try and get one of those 24 guys now and then draft one of Branch or Gabriel (or a guy just like them) next year in the mid to late rounds?? If I could get Addai and Owens...two carryover guys...for Jones and Deuce...one carryover guy...why wouldn't that be a good deal?? Sure, Owens is getting long in the tooth but when he wants to play, he puts up great numbers. He's definitely better than any receiver I have now.
Even as a Dallas fan, I like the trade for Addai as he's going to basically be the only RB worth anything Indy, where teams have to worry a lot more about the pass, plus you're getting a draft pick for it, although good luck getting that deal now that he had that 30 yd performance. BTW, I don't agree with the people earlier in the thread that Dallas is looking to replace J. Jones...on the contrary he's established himself as the #1 RB with Barber basically only getting a handful of short yardage / goal line carries (the latter of which do hurt his value of course) and he's been much better than his injury-plagued last season.
I would try to move one of your QB's (probably Brady) for a WR with more value since WR's are decently important for scoring in your league.

Ok...made quite a deal this morning...remember, this is a 12-team keeper league...I sent Julius Jones, Deuce, Horn and my 1st round pick in 2008 (we have an 8-round "entry" draft prior to the season starting) for Chad Johnson, Joseph Addai and a late round pick in 2007. So, I picked up two keepers while only dealing one keeper in Jones and hopefully that 1st round pick is a late one. The guy I dealt with won't even carry over Jones either as he's got LJ and Alexander...so, I could very well end up with Jones with my first round pick next year.
So, here's what my team looks like right now:
QB Brady, Rivers (will probably deal Rivers tonight...there's a guy in our league with both Big Ben and McNair...I should be able to get a high round pick to replace the one I gave up)
RB Chester Taylor, Joseph Addai, Marion Barber
WR Chad Johnson, Branch, Gabriel, Evans, Moulds
TE Cooley, Desmond Clark
K Hanson
DEF TB, Was
Tonight we have our second supplemental draft (instead of a waiver wire we have three supp. drafts...after weeks 4, 7, and 10 each consisting of 2 rounds where we can add and drop guys) and i have the first pick where I'll probably take Leon Washington to solidify my RB situation and if I do trade Rivers, I'll look to get another pick so I can pick up a QB...Alex Smith, hopefully.
So, as of right now, my carryovers for next year look like this:
Brady
Taylor, Addai
C. Johnson, (Branch/Gabriel)
Cooley
Hanson (hope to pick up Carney tonight)
Don't care which Def I have...hopefully I can pick up a better one before the end of the season.
Thoughts?
