I thought we needed an NFL cutdown day thread over here. Post what you have heard and what you think about any of the guys.

We are trying to track them over at SGS (http://vtbub.com/index.php?blog=2).

Here are some that we have collected:

Baltimore Ravens:
The Baltimore Ravens released thirteen players on Monday to get to the roster limit. The Baltimore Sun released this list of players that were waived: TE Rob Abiamiri, CB Bill Alford, T Lester Brown, RB Keith Burnell, DL Walter Curry, DB Jarvis Johnson, LB Steve Josue, T Tron LaFavor, K Rhys Lloyd, OL Marques Ogden, K Owen Pochman, WR Fred Stamps, and WR Curtis Williams.

Carolina Panthers:
The Durham Herald-Sun reported that eleven Carolina Panthers were cut on Sunday: QB Rod Rutherford, WR Taylor Stubblefield, DT Omari Jordan, TE Chad Mustard, CB Dwight Anderson, RB Nick Maddox, WR JR. Tolver, LB Marcus Lawrence, OL Bill Ferrario, OL Chase Johnson, and OL Michael Watson.

Pittsburgh Steelers:
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today released a list of ten Steelers that were cut today: TE Matt Cushing, WR Chris Doering, OL Josh Burr, WR Zamir Cobb, DB Vontez Duff, C Joe Iorio, WR Walter Young, OT Morgan Davis, K Shaun Suisham, G Jake Verstraete. The Steelers still need to cut four more players, to get to their limit of 71 players, by the deadline.

Denver Broncos:
The Denver Post reported RB Maurice Clarett, QB Danny Kanell, DE Raylee Johnson and TE Patrick Hape.

My own thoughts:

Steelers are my favorite team. I don't see any major surprises here, except TE Matt Cushing. He had kind of been a Coach Cowher favorite that played like 3rd or 4th string TE, backup FB, and was a solid special teams guy. He'd been with the team for parts of several seasons. WR Walter Young was supposed to have had an impressive early camp and been a big target, but apparently he didn't open enough eyes.

Carolina cut Mike Watson, who was a two-year starting OT at (my school) WVU. He came via Juco and was a pretty solid starter, but I'm not too surprised that he didn't make it. He was a little slow.

That Denver Post article said that Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Cleveland, St. Louis and Dallas could all have interest in Maurice Clarett. Steelers definitely need some help with Bettis and Staley both hurting, but I don't see Clarett being much help.

They also cut safety Dexter Reid.

Big names from Packers camp that were cut were LB Hannibal Navies and G Matt O'Dwyer. Both surprised me, since Navies has been solid the past couple of years and they were pretty pumped about bringing O'Dwyer in. I hope they know what they are doing...

IMO Davey being cut was probably helpfull to him, someone will sign him in a second. I guess the kid backing up Brady now is Cassel? He look pretty good in the games I saw him in.

Navies had fallen behind Ray Thompson and they really like undrafted rookie LB Roy Manning (former Wolverine). The plan of Lenon and Manning made Navies expendable, and the rumor was he also didn't fit Bates' system. O'Dwyer had fallen behind Scott Wells, the rookie Whitticker, Klemm and Ruegamer and didn't even play against NE. All GB wanted was one of the two vets (O'Dwyer or Klemm) to step up and Klemm did that. Along with the surprising play of Wells made him expendable. Whitticker could be this season's Mark Tauscher. He was taken in the 7th (#246) and could end up winning the starting RG spot.

Was gonna say that, the kid backing Brady should be Flutie :)

I'm a bit more surprised about the release of Cedric Cobbs. I thought they were bringing him along so he would take over for Corey Dillon in a season or two...

I don't know NFL teams, but I know the W&M Players...

Cleveland Browns cut QB Lang Campbell - Lang was the Peyton Award winner this year in I-AA (for those that don't know, it's the I-AA equivelent to the Heisman). I imagine if someone gave him a real shot (he was one of 3 rookies including 3rd rounder Frye) that he could be a solid backup.

New England Patriots cut WR Rich Musinski - He tried to make the Titans last year as a rookie. He was moved to the practice squad for the AFL. Unless he tries the CFL, I think he may be done with professional football.

St. Louis Rams cut WR Dominique Thompson - I was surprised to even see him get signed. Doubt he'll be looked at by another NFL team.

They kind had to cut Davey. He hasn't done anything on the field in years and Cassel is a promising rookie who has looked good on the field his first year, who knows what he has in him. I'm not shedding any tears.

Last I heard Flutie is backing Brady up, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's really Cassel, so that the whole offense wouldn't have to switch gears from Brady to Flutie.

I'm surpised at Cobbs as well, had been reading good things about him. If Dillion gets injured does Faulk take over? Didn't work so well in Pittsburgh last year.

Not really a cut, but Philadelphia has withdrawn the franchise tender they offered DT Corey Simon, effectively making him a free agent.

If you saw Davey play you wouldn't say that. He's terrible.

Was beaten out by a 127 year old QB and a guy that hasn't played a down of football in a game for 4 years.

Cobbs couldn't stay healthy, that's why he got cut. They also have liked some guy named Chapman who is in camp.

Rumor is that Miami is interested in Davey. Saban is his old coach, and it is not like they have a QB on the roster now.

That would make sense since Saban is there but I'd be surprised if he is ever starting caliber.

I would guess they tried to shop him around and got the old "No general manager has shown any interest in this player."

Rohan Davey can be a starting caliber NFL QB, just not in the Pats system. Davey's accuracy shows itself when he can throw vertically down the field; he can put very good touch on midrange to deep passes(kinda like Jeff Blake in his prime). The Patriots want QBs that show their accuracy on shorter routes, that was never Davey's strength. If he can find the right system Davey has a very good arm, good accuracy in the right kind of system, and a good feel for the game.

They need to cut Feeley and get that over with, give a real look at Sage Rosenfels (or Davey, if they are so inclined), and decide what to do. The indecision regarding Feeley and his sunk costs (the draft pick it cost to get him under the old regime) is starting to wear like an albatross. Move on.

08-29-2005, 02:13 PM
Oh I know that the Pats have a lot of downfield options, especially lately, but short range accuracy first is what the Pats coaches have always built off of in practice, and thats what the coaches have always told Rohan he needs to work on.

NFL Europe doesn't mean a whole lot, hell Danny W. looked good over there at times, but if you have the arm for the NFL, the leaderships skills, and could show them off on a stage like the NFLE, there is no reason you can't show them off in the right system in the NFL. All successful NFLE QBs that I can think of that had NFL bodies and arms have been successful in the NFL.

Went to Bengals.com to find their cuts, none were listed.

Anyway, funny tidbit of news: "DT John Thornton doubts the club is going to sign the Eagles’ Corey Simon and says Simon wouldn’t be an upgrade to his tandem that includes Bryan Robinson"

Though I never even thought for a second we would look at Simon, it's funny that this was reported. Obviously no DT is going to say a better DT that would start over him really needs to come to the team anyway..

I haven't seen the Titans yet.

The Tennessee Titans waived 10 players Monday in an effort to reach a 65-player roster. They are G Mike Erickson, QB Shane Boyd, K Jay Taylor, DT Joe Minucci, DE Shawn Johnson, DE Todd Bates, LB Travis Harris, CB Antoine Harris, WR Adrian Madise and WR Vincent Cartwright

I think there is a good chance he could be on the roster, if not that then the practice squad. Haven't heard anything bad about him, and as they say, sometimes no news is good news. He did well in NFLE and we can always use decent depth on the line.

The Bills cut some no name guys and RB Rashard Lee. Lee had been unimpressive so far this preseason. RB Shaud Williams should back up McGahee. He's very quick and shifty with decent speed. The knock on him is that he's too small. He actually reminds me a lttle of Thurman Thomas. 7th rnd pick RB Lionel Gates has been impressive so far in the preseason. Big back with speed.
For all you fantasy football guys who drafted Mcgahee, make sure you take Shaud Williams in your draft. Mcgahee seems to get hurt atleast once a game, and it's always scary to see him limp off of the field.

i know they always say backup QB's are the most popular players on the team, but damn Davey is a hell of a player. He's just a total beast. I don't think the Pats will regret cutting him, but I do think that when he lands in the right system he will put up quite good NFL numbers. Great arm, solid accuracy, and he is literally HUGE

He thinks they have already made up their mind on his status, and on Monday he called for them to cut him Tuesday instead of Saturday if they do plan to release him.

And dammit it looks like Kevin Kaesviharn is going to start at safety this year because Kim Herring is lost for the year it seems. Kaesviharn blows.

In anticipation of the Tuesday, August 30, NFL mandatory cut down to the 65-player roster limit, the Atlanta Falcons announced today that seven players have been waived.
The Falcons waived veterans G Martin Bibla, FB Carey Davis, P Toby Gowin, DE Otis Grigsby, CB Christian Morton, DE John Taylor, and rookie TE Brian Casey.

Bibla, 6-3, 306 pounds, played in 31 games with two starts for the Falcons since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2002 draft out of Miami.
Also, there has been a little bit of talk radio blabber about Peerless Price. Speculation is that Dez White and Mike Williams are the projected starters, and that the coaches don't really care for Price. Considering his salary, he is pretty much untradeable, so there is some conjecture that the Falcons might take the cap hit and let Price go.

I don't see it happening, but there has been some talk about it, so I thought I'd toss it out there.

The impression I get is that Price is more of a stretch the field type receiver, whereas the Falcons offense favors short route/possession type recievers (hence Finneran's success). I think Price was in a great situation in Buffalo where he had Moulds as the #1 and was able to take advantage of single coverage, usually against the weaker of the cornerbacks. He simply wasn't/isn't a #1, even though the Falcons tried to make him one.

Local word is that the Redskins have cut WR Darnerian McCants, who had been a decent redzone target for them in the recent past. Six of seven TDs a couple seasons ago, as I recall. Not a huge find, but I wouldn't be shocked to see the Iggles have a look.

BTW, who the heck is Mike Williams? :D

I would agree with Buzzer's assessment totally. He was put in a situation as the #1 where he failed....

He is a very good #2 option...

Or even a three. I would have loved to see him in the slot. I guess they felt 1) It is better to take the hit now than continue to pay him, and/or 2) His attitude would not have held up if he wasn't starting.

"Also Tuesday, the Bengals ended the season of safety Kim Herring (shoulder) when they put him on injured reserve to get down to the mandatory 68 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday. They also waived two players, third-year cornerback Terrell Roberts and rookie guard Kyle Takavitz, and added veteran safety Ifeanyi Ohalete and veteran linebacker Hannibal Navies."

Wow! Nice, two players I actually recognize. Even though I don't know if Navies will make the list of 53, our depth at LB is so deep.

WR Jamaica Rector
FS Woody Dantzler

It looks like Dantzler is being kept right now because of his NFL Europe exemption but will soon be cut along with RB Kenyon Kincade.

If Warrick signs on with the Seahawks, even if he can be a productive #3 guy, I'll be quite happy. Does mean we have a ton of #3 guys on the team (Engram, Warrick, Joe J., Pathon), so hopefully one of them steps up to be a solid #2, but I think a large load is going to be on Jackson's shoulders to get rid of the drops this year and really carry the aerial attack.

Local word is that the Redskins have cut WR Darnerian McCants, who had been a decent redzone target for them in the recent past. Six of seven TDs a couple seasons ago, as I recall. Not a huge find, but I wouldn't be shocked to see the Iggles have a look.

Chiefs | Mitchell Says Surgery Declinement Was Reason for Release
Fri, 2 Sep 2005 12:35:34 -0700

Adam Teicher (http://www.kffl.com/link/143), of the Kansas City Star (http://www.kffl.com/link/142), reports free agent WR Freddie Mitchell (http://www.kffl.com/player/1494/nfl) (knee) said the Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.kffl.com/team/21/nfl) released him because the team believed his knee would not last the entire season without having arthroscopic surgery performed on his torn meniscus. "It wasn't about my athletic ability or anything else," said Mitchell, who declined to have surgery at the time as the Chiefs (http://www.kffl.com/team/21/nfl) requested. Mitchell indicated the Chiefs (http://www.kffl.com/team/21/nfl) would consider re-signing him if he had surgery and rehabilitation. Mitchell said he arranged the surgery for Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Birmingham, Ala.

Mitchell was hoping that the injury wasn't that serious and that he would be ready in time, and that's why he declined the surgury at that time. Word in KC is that he's going to have the surgury/rehab and then rejoin the Chiefs later in the season.

Steelers have cut a few more meaningful players. That is, guys that have been on their roster for awhile.

Long snapper Mike Schneck, QB Brian St. Pierre, and former 2nd round pick OLB Alonzo Jackson. Also, looks like former Georgia WR and 2005 4th round pick Fred Gibson will also be cut. I'm pretty disappointed about Gibson. He seemed like a nice big target and, with the Georgia connection, I figured he might learn how to play a bit from Hines Ward.

Yeah, I was a bit suprised too at the wideouts too. I guess they wanted to have more depth along the d-line (keeping Swancutt) and defensive backfield. Also, Mooch loves Paul Smith. He'll be around for like a week before he goes on IR for the year. Don't worry...

Yet another U-M flameout. I give Braylon 2-3 years before he implodes.

Seriously, U-M is a great football college, but definitely not a good NFL player producer. MSU might be mediocre, but our guys have a lot more NFL tools apparantly.

Yeah, but we kept Lee Mays. :thud

At least they kept TE Krancheck.

Hmm... well, I'll wait and see. But this just doesn't make a ton of sense to me (as I posted in that other thread).

As far as the Dallas cuts, there were several surprises (at least to me, and I follow the Cowboys pretty closely):

T - Kurt Vollers (Parcells really liked his ability to play both sides)
T - Tyson Walter (another versatile guy that can play guard and tackle)
TE - Jeff Robinson (with all the problems Dallas had a couple years ago with deep-snapping, I thought Robinson was a lock to make it again)
S - Lynn Scott (Started several games last year)

to add on my first comment. Jed Weaver being cut means the Pats are going into the season with Ben Watson, Daniel Graham, and Christian Fauria at TE. Fauria was said to be on the bubble from what I was reading... I'm happy they kept him.

Because I can't handle any more depressing Katrina news, here are some cuts.

Washington Redskins

Jon Alston, OL
Tyler Lenda, OL
Mark Wilson, OL
Robert Johnson, TE
Kevin Dyson, WR
Jimmy Farris, WR
Jamin Elliott, WR
Rich Parson, WR
Aki Jones, DL
Brandon Barnes, LB
Robert McCune, LB
Rufus Brown, DB
Eric Joyce, DB
Siddeeq Shabazz, DB
Garnell Wilds, DB
Ron Warner, DE
Chris Mohr, P

With McCune getting cut(a real surprise to me) that means the fifth and sixth rounders for 2005 are cut and the fourth rounder is on IR. Is it any wonder they suck?

Oh, and Shabazz marks the third safety that either quit or got cut after they signed them from another team. Can Tagliabue give them a GM as a compensatory pick for Pearce and Smoot?

Bengals cuts

WAIVED: Rookie CB Patrick Body, second-year QB Casey Bramlet, second-year WR Jamall Broussard, rookie LB Derek Curry, first-year FB/TE Ronnie Ghent, rookie S Herana-Daze Jones, first-year OL Pete Lougheed, second-year DT Langston Moore, rookie WR Dante Ridgeway, fourth-year WR Cliff Russell, rookie K Carter Warley, first-year CB Brandon Williams, first-year RB Quincy Wilson.

NFL SUSPENSION: 10-year DE Duane Clemons (four weeks).

Physically Unable to Perform: second-year LB Caleb Miller (six weeks).

The Clemons suspension really hurts the pass D. No real surprises. Marvin keeps all the draft picks and gets rid of the guys that have three-four years of experience and could be free agents next year.

Swaggs: Sorry about Wilson. He'll find a job, but the Bengals went with only four running backs and Wilson wasn't versatile enough to beat Perry or Watson.

Hard for me to imagine that there are 120ish or more active running backs in the NFL that are better than Quincy Wilson, so hopefully he will catch on with someone else. The Steelers could probably use him, as a matter of fact.

The 2 surprises for the Packers are Hunt & Thompson although, both really should have been cut. Hunt has had zero motivation since signing a large contract several years ago and Thompson really didn't show much in preseason and it was better long term to keep Manning & Poppinga. Little disappointed that they didn't keep Thurman around but, I would expect him to be on someone's rosters as a 5 or 6th receiver... (or if a Packer WR is injured, I'd expect him back).

Broncos produce running backs the way Italy produces Popes. Well okay, the last two have been an exception, but for the past several centuries before that... :D

In other news, I was sad to see Timmy Chang get cut and yes Whittaker has been kicking ass for the Packers in preseason.

I hope my 'Phins pick up Davey. We need a decent QB to throw to Chambers. Now what I'd *really* love to see is Jovon Bouknight go to the Dolphins in the draft next year. They'd be my favourite pair of receivers since two guys named Clayton and Duper. :D

Sunshine won't be beaming on the Falcons' opening-day roster but seven of eight draft picks and three rookie free agents will following the team's final roster cut Saturday.

Alaskan rookie free-agent wide receiver Cole Magner, nicknamed "Sunshine," was one of 19 players released to get the roster to 53. The long shot from Bowling Green captured the fondness of teammates for his flypaper hands, but he played split end, where Dez White, Brian Finneran and Roddy White have roster spots secured.

Camp invitee Romby Bryant, a second-year player from Tulsa who plays in the slot behind Michael Jenkins, earned the fifth wide-receiver spot.

One-time starting guard Mookie Moore, who re-aggravated a chronically troublesome shoulder in Thursday's preseason finale at Miami, and Atlanta native Khaleed Vaughn, a defensive end, were the biggest-name players to get cut.

The only other positions where there was some uncertainty came in the secondary. Second-year player Etric Pruitt, who had two preseason interceptions, nabbed the fifth safety spot. Rookie free agent Jonte Buhl made the team as a fifth cornerback.

The deepest position is running back, where six players — three fullbacks and three tailbacks — were retained. Former Arena League player Marlion Jackson and rookie tailback DeAndra Cobb, a kickoff return specialist, made the cut while Jason Wright was released.

Rookie free agent Antoine Cash, who started last season at Southern Mississippi opposite fifth-round draft pick Michael Boley at outside linebacker, made the team.

Third-round draft pick Jordan Beck (broken foot) and guard Steve Herndon (neck) were placed on injured reserve and won't play this season.

wow. Broncos cut Quentin Griffin?

Hell, that's one prediction I got right about the Denver running backs. There was little doubt he was going to get cut. He's not fully back from his injury and he's not able to help out with special teams.

Biggest Bronco cut was Terry Peirce. A high round draft pick a couple of years ago, never panned out. (though in his defense, he was picked mainly because the team feared they'd lose Al Wilson and when he was resigned there just wasn't a lot of playing time left for TP)

Broncos keep 2 QB's and 3 kickers. Rice is on the roster, but as a fourth WR. He's going to decide if he wants to continue to play or not. My guess is he won't and that'll be that.

It's only because so few of the little green men are good enough to make it to the NFL in the 1st place. So little is expected of them, so if one even makes an NFL roster he is viewed as a major success! The only two recent ones I can think of are Tony Banks & Sedrick Irvin. Chuck Rogers could be good if he had a QB that didn't get his shoulder busted every three games or so...

Ok, I know Harrington has his flaws, but WTF?!?! You're now blaming Rogers' shoulder injuries on him? His first shoulder injury came during practice when he got tanlged up with Dre Bly and fell down. His second came in the first game against the Bears. It had nothing to do with the pass, he just his the ground and snap.

What's next? Blaming Harrington for Bailey's knee injury? Garcia's leg?

Give me a break.

Maybe it's my OU homerism, but I have to think Quentin Griffin will get a chance somewhere else. He had fumble and injury problems, but I watched several of his games with Denver, and he can do some good things - at the very least a 3rd down back. I'd be surprised if he stays unemployed long.

He'll get picked back up. He'll also get some major PT somewhere again. Not as a starter, but as a third down back. I doubt that happens this year though. He's still recovering from his injury and just doesn't have that burst right now.

If Jerry Rice decides to retire, does that mean the Broncos will be picking up one of the receivers they have already cut? And was there any chance he was going to be anything more than a 4 WR?

Biggest Seahawks cuts are Terreal Bierria and Jerome Pathon. Could see the Pathon cut coming a mile away after they signed Warrick. Kind of surprised about Bierria.

You obviously have a very bad memory, so let me help you:

Derrick Mason - WR
Muhsin Muhammad - WR
Plaxico Burress - WR
Charles Rogers - WR
Chris Baker - TE
T.J. Duckett - RB
Tony Banks - QB
Flozell Adams - OL
Siitupe Peko - C
Robaire Smith - DE
Josh Shaw - DT
Lemar Marshall - LB
Julian Peterson - LB
Ike Reese - LB
Renaldo Hill - CB
Paul Edinger - K
Dave Rayner - K

Now the above listed players are all starters or solid contributors to their teams. There are 7 other players, all young, that I didn't list. They haven't been in the league long enough to contribute yet.

I hope I illuminated you, BJ. :)

And for absolutely no good reason, I give you Jeff Garcia's "O" face:

Ok, I know Harrington has his flaws, but WTF?!?! You're now blaming Rogers' shoulder injuries on him? His first shoulder injury came during practice when he got tanlged up with Dre Bly and fell down. His second came in the first game against the Bears. It had nothing to do with the pass, he just his the ground and snap.

What's next? Blaming Harrington for Bailey's knee injury? Garcia's leg?

Give me a break.
I know. I'm getting so fucking tired of Harrington being blamed for everything short of Hurricane Katrina. There's plenty of blame to go around on that team, he's just a part of it.

Would you like me to name how many of those guys are pure poop, or on the practice squad? I guarantee that the amount of MSU starters is close to or more than the amount of U-M starters.

Damnit, now I have to do more research. :)

This is a funny website (found on a Steelers Forum) about one of the Steelers new practice squad players named Chris Samp. Some pretty good stuff. :)

Gotta admit, I'm getting a little concerned about the Broncos short depth chart at the skill positions. With Griffith and Mo gone...they only have 3 HBs on the roster? With Triandos and Rice gone...do they have enough WRs? And don't even get me started about that 2 QB deal. The Broncs have some old players at those positions...can they weather an injury bug?

Figured you would know better than anyone.

Suprisingly, there is a god

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers added a new player to their receiving corps today when they signed free agent veteran Quincy Morgan to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not released.

To make room for Morgan on their roster, Pittsburgh released four-year veteran receiver Lee Mays.

Morgan (6-1, 215), a five-year veteran from Kansas State, was originally selected in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He played with the Browns for more than three seasons before being traded to the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 19, 2004, in exchange for wide receiver Antonio Bryant.

In four seasons, Morgan has caught 155 passes for 2,316 yards (14.9 avg.) and 15 touchdowns. He has also returned 11 kickoffs for 267 yards (24.3 avg.). Morgan enjoyed his finest season in 2002 when he set career highs with 56 receptions, 964 receiving yards (17.2 avg.) and seven touchdowns.

Mays, who was originally selected by the Steelers in the sixth round (202nd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft, had caught 11 passes for 154 yards (14.0 avg.) and returned 36 kickoffs for 750 yards (20.8 avg.) in his three seasons with the team. He missed part of the 2005 preseason with an injured hamstring.<!-- / message -->
