Yeah, interestingly 1961 was his best WAR year but not even close to his best offensive year (I realized this after I was posting as I was evaluating my pick) - actually was a down year for offense but highest based on a pretty dramatic swing in defensive WAR. I'd probably go for a different year as well if it was up to me.

I'd like to see only being able to draft one player from each decade as an awesome twist if you do this again. Maybe once you've selected from all 14, you can reuse them or something.

Or something like 2 from each decade, and pre 1920 counts as one decade with the rule above about reuse?

Question: how interchangeable are OF positions? It's been a long time since I have played OOTP regularly. If I were to select someone who hypothetically never played an inning in LF in their career, but I moved them to LF, how much would that mess with them?

Also, I should be around almost all day tomorrow. If it gets stuck on me and that list still has people in it, feel free to pick for me, but give me a reasonable amount of time first (an hour or two should be plenty).

Yeah, I don't think you'd want to do that if they don't have any experience at the position. It's certainly not "OF positions are interchangeable" from my experience. And that actually brings a couple more important points to my mind, as haven't imported historical players into OOTP in many years.

1) Will imported players come in with just experience and rating at their primary position they played that year, or a realistic balance of the positions they played that season/over the import period?

2) Will the CPU manager put SP as relievers and actually use them reliably, or is it going to freak out and do stupid stuff if you don't have a true MR/CL on the roster? Not sure if anyone is considering doing that, but that would be sad if somebody takes a bunch of great SP and ruins their team. Historically dominant relievers are not a dime a dozen.

Been studying the draft so far. This has been fantastic and is making me think about buying the game.

One thing Im curious about is why you picked your team names. I get a couple of the references, but not all. While we are in between picks I would like to hear why you guys named your teams the way you did.

The Big Inning Corn Kings are the best team from the book The Iowa Baseball Confederacy by WP Kinsella. This is my favorite book of his. Mostly because of the references to the area I grew up. The book takes place a few miles south and makes tons of references to places and things I grew up.

Great book.

My team name is something that I typically use when I get to pick a team name in OOTP. I live in Indy and the Indianapolis Clowns were a Negro League team. I like the name and I like to pay homage to them.

Question. Does my Walter Johnson pick count as a Washington pick or a Twins pick? The Washington Senators team that he was on eventually moved to Minnesota.

I used to play in a face to face league with the old Superstars Baseball game (which was the SI version of the Avalon Hill game). The teams already in the league used secondary southern markets for their towns (Asheville, Charleston, Augusta, etc.), so I chose Tallahassee, which was my college town. The name Federals came from the Federal League...I thought it sounded like a classic baseball team name.

There is a Vassal module for Superstar Baseball. An idea could be forming. Sunday night baseball league? Head to head play. Maybe a 30 game league.
Similar format to this?

It was awesome...I was the 6th team when I joined. We played 24 game seasons...2 game sets with each team getting 1 game as the home team. We played every time we got together (while having a few beers). We ended up playing 5 or so seasons (after I joined) and the league grew to 12 before life broke apart the group. I even created 10 negro league players that we added in the game to provide some depth after the expansion.

Even though my team isn't on here anymore my answer is pretty straight forward. We had a minor league team in the area that were the AC Surf. Shame the casinos basically treated them like competition instead of embracing them to help bring people in. The stadium was nice, a view of the city skyline. It was a nice way to spend an evening. Unfortunately they left several years ago.

I have a theory that the game is nerfing older players on import, or maybe they just don't rate highly in things that are important in todays game (strikeouts, homers etc...)

There's a couple of legendary guys out there on the offensive side still out there that fit the profile, and it's EF's ratings that have given me pause on grabbing them.

Going to call it an earlier night tonight.

The players are imported using real stars as the base for the ratings. There's a lot of talent in the league so the actual difference is slight but it is interesting seeing the star ratings (have those displaying based on the league).

Right now there are 4 "5 star" players. Rogers Hornsby, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and Babe Ruth.

There are 5 players under "3 star" and I think anyone would take them on their team without hesitation: Andre Dawsson, Hal Newhouser, Alfonso Soriano, Ichiru Suzuki and Cy Young.

Hence the Kershaw pick, guess the GOAT will be doing long relief for me or something.

I read EF's post as the ratings are still exceptional, the game just somehow needs to use the star ratings to show some sort of differentiation between the players. So even though Cy has fewer stars, it's a relative thing.

Well, shit. Guess I should have gone in reverse order, as he was my next pick. That season was insane.

I've been curious about how to go about roster construction, though - will the AI use a 3rd starter properly out of the bullpen? There are still plenty of very nice starters out there.

Yeah, I’m not sure either but I assume it will use the two best starters and if that essentially means I’m down a roster spot, so be it. Having a righty/lefty SP pair is also something that is interesting to me as I doubt anyone has really been thinking about platoons (or has space to do that on an 18 man roster).

Oh, just an off the cuff comment for discussion.

If this goes well and everyone like the season I have been throwing around a couple other ideas for something similar.

Maybe picking random states (or groups of states) and players can only pick one player from that state (group of states) on their team. Was thinking countries but I don't know if that is possible.

Another idea that I had was finding coming up with the worst teams ever based on single season record and only players from those teams can be drafted (and only one from each team can be drafted on each player's team).

Just some food for thought.

Nope, Pujols is still available. Which seems crazy and makes my Helton pick five rounds earlier look somewhat silly.

I'm seriously deliberating between two players, so give me a couple minutes and I'll make my pick.

I love your initial idea so much I'm going to have my friends do it next week (when I get back from travel to KC (seeing Royals-Mets Saturday night). I'd be down for any of this but honestly I'd love to do like 10 seasons of this with maybe each team getting one swap or trade after each season. This is an awesome idea EF.

Also I'll be in on whatever you try but I think the idea of a series of seasons with these players is also awesome :)
