View Full Version : The Players League of Pro Basketball (FBPB3)

In the wake of the NBA's lockout in 2011, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison decides to develop his own pro basketball league (http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7058281/we-need-renegade-basketball-league) to leverage on the popularity of NBA players who are still severed from their league.

Joined by spurned Seattle would-be owned Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer, the PBF gets started in 2011.

With many believing the NBA was at its best with fewer teams and Ellison a team of billionaires interested in owning teams coming together with the players, a 24-team league was formed called the Premier Basketball Federation or PBF.

Two 12-team conferences would form and among the rules were that teams cannot play in any existing NBA market. I also added a rule of no non-USA teams. I did some research to find the best markets. (http://www.bizjournals.com/bizjournals/on-numbers/scott-thomas/2011/08/22-markets-have-nba-potential.html?page=all&appSession=008116340982898&RecordID=&PageID=2&PrevPageID=&cpipage=2&CPISortType=&CPIorderBy=)

Using real life players, this league would be set in modern times obviously since we're simulating in a sense the NBA had it broken up after the last lockout.

The league will start with a Snake draft. With just 24 teams and a hard salary cap starting at 30 million, the idea is the league will give players ownership but also, weed out the parity that so many people dislike about the former NBA.

Mostly curious to see how teams unfold in this new scenario. I spent less time on developing franchise names and logos and stuff, because I just wanted to get started. Over time, if it sticks, all of that might evolve.

Here's the setup of the league in both conferences. In some cases, chose major cities in states in the metro areas of NBA teams, but tried to diversify by giving areas with no NBA representation a chance on the big stage.

Again, it's a snake draft. The regular season is 70 games. 12 teams make the post-season. I'm still deciding whether I'll take over a team or let the AI just build all of the teams, because I'd like to see where everyone ends up and then let the chips fall from there.

My minor league is a created 9-team Canadian league with a small salary cap. I imagine only fringe NBAers will ever end up there.

Now that the draft and free agency are done, I should -- in theory -- go around the league and give you a sense of what players are where. There are few superteams thanks to 24 teams giving you just enough parity and the draft inevitably made that easier too.

Rather than diving right in, though, I think I'm going to spend the first season letting the computer make its deals and all of the post-draft stuff that would happen in real life. Then when the playoffs show up, we can just take a look at the cream of the crop. If there's some player you're looking for from real life, you'd just tell me and I'll highlight him.

In terms of draft position versus record, where was the best place to pick? #1? #24?

I think the issue is who teams drafted at their relative positions and how many franchise players were available in certain spots. Bad AI drafting probably helped the cause.

Birmingham got LeBron, which is proxy for playoffs. I'd say that probably that San Bernardino did a good job at 19, Pittsburgh's roster seemed the most complete to me at first glance. But I'll need to take a closer look to see how they did in the first year overall as we do the playoffs to determine which team I think is the best out of the gate.

CONFERENCE FINALS

Upstart 5th seed Lehigh Valley are blazing through the playoffs. They'll take on Baltimore for a trip to the inaugural PBF championship. In the West, San Bernardino takes on Kansas City, as the two best teams in that conference square off in the tilt everyone has been waiting for.

We can take a look at the Final Four of this year's PBF right now.

When this all started, I was skeptical of the run and gun situation that San Bernardino is putting out there, but now that they've gotten this far, I'm starting to think the AI knew something I didn't.

Just judging from the rosters, any idea what club stands out to you as the team to beat?

Programming note. I'm going to acquire the Anchorage franchise next year and move them to the mainland U.S. for next season.

Here's their roster.

I haven't decided whether I'm going to fold them and create an expansion team or just acquire the franchise and move it. Obviously would love to have D-Wade and Boogie Cousins together to build with, but that's almost too easy and I would almost prefer an expansion draft to work through. But we'll see.

Candidate cities for the Anchorage club have been narrowed down to these finalists: Gary (IN), Newark (NJ), St. Louis (MO)

Went and got this. (http://wagesofwins.com/2011/10/31/could-your-city-give-a-sports-team-a-good-home/)

In the end, after some debate...a last minute offer came from San Juan, Puerto Rico and a Puerto Rican magnate Lorenzo Zambrano of CEMEX to move the Anchorage franchise to Puerto Rico next season.

So San Juan will get the team.

Young Drachma

Little Rock moving to the Western Conference, San Juan to the Eastern and will be an expansion team meaning we'll have to start from scratch. Sort of sucks, but we'll say that it was a condition of San Juan getting a team that it had to be an expansion franchise and if they'd moved to one of the cities on the mainland, they'd have been able to keep the players.

But for me, it just creates a challenge which is what my goal is. There should be a dispersal draft too and then an expansion draft. Not sure how it will work, but we'll see how it goes.

Young Drachma

Apparently San Juan gets to participate in the dispersal draft AND the expansion draft AND the first-year playoff draft. So that'll be good.

The dispersal draft is just whoever they had under contract, meaning just Boogie Cousins and D-Wade are the two options and everyone else apparently doesn't get any love. Not sure I get it. But glad we get the #1 pick in this scenario and can take either of those guys. I'd love to take Wade since he's a playmaker, but Cousins is a rare talent and plays a position that's especially hard to fill in this game. So we're going to take him instead.

D-Wade ended up in Richmond as they had the #2 pick.

We had the 4th overall pick in the NBA draft, this is the Anthony Davis draft. We're going to try to pry that pick from Richmond using the 4th overall pick, and some other pieces.

Young Drachma
05-01-2013, 11:51 PM
San Juan traded a 2012 1st rounder (4th overall), '12 2nd rounder, 2013 2nd rounder, 2014 1st & 2nd rounder to Richmond in exchange for the 1st pick in the 2012 draft.

Might seem like a lot to give up, but Davis anchoring the PF position for us to go with Cousins to me, seems like a lethal combo that we can't pass up.

Computer just offered me Kevin Durant for Boogie Cousins. I need to turn up trade difficulty, it seems.

Young Drachma
05-11-2013, 07:11 PM
Just pulled off a three-team deal:

San Juan gets PG Ricky Rubio & SF Earl Clark

Worcester gets PG Gilbert Arenas and a San Juan 1st rounder (2013) and Colorado Springs gets SG Ben Gordan and a Worcester 2nd (2015)

Durant is out another three months, which will tank any possible hopes of this team doing much post-season wise.

We acquired Tayshaun Prince from Worcester earlier in the season for Mo Williams.

Young Drachma

We missed the playoffs, but with Durant coming back for the last 7 weeks of the season, managed to at least end the year with a winning record.
