It is a time of great upheaval in college football. Years of conference realignment have fundamentally altered the landscape of the FBS. Now, in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has ousted Penn State and at last claimed his precious, Notre Dame, with a sweetheart deal.

In the South, the first Super Conference is born when the SEC snags Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Clemson from the ACC, along with Louisville from the Big East. In turn, the ACC raids the Big East, grabbing Rutgers, West Virginia, and USF.

The Big East, desperate for its very survival, reluctantly gives the NCAA-sanctioned Penn State a landing spot over the fierce objections of Pitt. With few viable options available, the Big East also extends invitations to lowly Buffalo from the MAC, and to two regional FCS teams, the University of Massachusetts, and the University of Rochester. In the end, all of them accept...

Here's how the conferences look heading into Season 1 of this dynasty. I favored regional conferences for the most part. You'll find about 6 teambuilder teams (maybe 7, I forget). I constructed a post-sanctions version Penn State using a weak roster and knocked down their pitches significantly, except for things like facilities, which would remain the same even with sanctions.

I came to the University of Rochester in December of 2011. My predecessor, Coach Pomponio, was a failed jock who had moved over to the sideline to become a failed coach. A blown out knee had been his excuse for his failures on the field. The fact that he had gone to college for the football and not for the education might have played a role in his failure as a coach. Four wins in three seasons had been enough justification for Rochester to give him his walking papers.

A good friend of mine from my days as an undergrad at Indiana University, Rob Delaney, had become Athletic Director at the U or R two years prior. One blustery day in mid-December, I received a call from Delaney out of the blue. He asked how things were going, what I was up to these days, that kind of stuff. I told him I'd been unemployed for the 10 months since my division at Kodak had been shuttered due to the bad economy. He asked if I'd like to coach football.

I told him I'd never coached (or played) football at any level. That my only experience outside of watching it on TV was playing video games and text sims. He told me "Don't worry, Kodos--it's only FCS football. You'll be fine. Nobody watches it anyway."

With nothing to lose, I told him I'd give it a go.

Fairbanks and Boise State should give you some nice competition.

By the way, expect this to be a slow-moving dynasty. The half hour between the end of work and when I have to leave for my train is the main time I will have for updates. Also, I only get to play a game or two a week, including my games in The Ladder league. I plan to keep at it for a long time, as long as it doesn't become a ton of work posting it. I find a dynasty write-up enhances my immersion and enjoyment. :)

In late December of 2011, I started to assemble my staff. Painfully aware of the limitations of my own football knowledge, I set about putting together the most knowledgeable staff I could, with AD Delaney's help. Our staffing budget turned out to be surprisingly good, thanks to an anonymous wealthy donor. It was a bit perplexing, but I wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

We put the unexpectedly generous staffing budget to good use, and in the end, we snagged a solid staff with winning football backgrounds. I used my superior alien intellect to soak up everything they were teaching the players, and soon my confidence in my viability as a head coach started growing. I would bounce ideas off of my coordinators, and sometimes they would actually like them. I knew I hadn't won their respect just yet, but I thought I saw a chance of it in the future. Especially because I had a secret weapon at my disposal...

--------

By the spring game, things were progressing nicely. As it turned out, Coach Pomponio had been a pretty decent recruiter. He just hadn't been very good at getting the most out of his players once they were in the fold. As we settled into offseason after the Spring Game, I was pretty pleased with our progress, and I thought we had a fighter's chance of making some noise in the FCS Northeast Conference.

In March of 2012, the shit started hitting the fan in the FBS. The Jerry Sandusky scandal blew up. After the Freeh Report, the NCAA hammered Penn State with sanctions, and shortly after that, Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney kicked the Nittany Lions out of the Big Ten. The dominoes started to fall, and in the end, the Big East was left with too few members, and too few options. It was all very fascinating to watch from a distance. That is, until the day that the Big East offered the University of Rochester a place in the conference.

Suddenly, my roster wasn't looking quite so good, and my confidence in our team being able to compete fell through the floor. The FCS was one thing; the FBS, something else entirely. Even for a guy who had a Jedi mind trick or two at his disposal.

I came to Earth in the 1980s from my home planet of Rigel IV. We Rigelians are an advanced race compared to you humans, but you folks are not utterly without charm. Your sports are fantastic, your music is the best in the universe (at least it was in the eighties), and your Egg McMuffins are simply otherworldly. Literally.

I left Rigel IV because I was a bit of an outcast there. Rigelians pride themselves on their warrior nature, but I was always more interested in geeky things, like sports, science fiction, etc. It didn't help matters that I was a girl. I grew up watching your TV broadcasts alone in my room after they'd beamed across the vastness of space.

To be honest, the main reason I left my home planet was my big brother, Kang. Like many older brothers, he enjoyed torturing his kid sister. One day, I'd just had enough. I left for Earth without saying goodbye.

---

When I came to Earth, I assumed the form of a teenage boy so that I could blend in. No offense, but you humans seem to be pretty warlike too. If I had shown up as I really look, things certainly would have gone poorly. Instead, I showed up, blended in, and started life on Earth as a freshman at Indiana University. When I registered, I registered as an alien, only I told them I was from Canada. That's still pretty alien, eh?

Following Rochester's promotion to the Big East, we had to scramble just to fill our out of conference schedule. The first out of conference game we scheduled was with the San Luis Obispo University Burn out of the WAC. Like us, they were just joining the FBS, and they were looking for an opponent that wouldn't embarrass them in their first FBS game. We agreed to a home-and-home series, with us traveling to their place in Week 1.

The next team to contact us was the Gatesville University Silicon Pirates out of the Texas division of the Big 12. They offered us a three-game series: two at their place, and one at ours. We were not in a position to bargain, so we took their offer.

We were able to schedule our first home game against the University of Fairbanks Northstars of the MWC in Week 5. The Northstars series will be a home-and-home, with the option of extending the series in the future if both teams are amenable to it.

Finally, we were able to add a home game against my alma mater from the Big Ten, Indiana University, in Week 9. In turn, we agreed to go to their place in a future season.

Here is the schedule for our first season in the FBS. The schedule-makers frowned on us, giving us 4 road games in our first 5.

This is a good spot to mention that the bulk of the credit for the teambuilder art goes to cuervo72. I have no artistic ability whatsoever. San Luis Obispo, Rochester, North Plainfield, and Massachusetts (located in Maassluis, MA) are all personal favorites that came from his work (http://www.fof-ihof.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13715) in the IHOF (http://108.59.255.76/~benelou/ihof/ben/teampage.php?teamid=21). Fairbanks has a Googled image for the big star, along with cuervo's awesome big dipper image (which unfortunately doesn't show up well in NCAA 2013, so I found the big yellow star to use instead). Gatesville has an image I found by googling "Silicon Pirate". I thought it was cool, even if it was clearly an Apple pirate, not a Microsoft one. I guess in this universe, Gates owns Apple too. ;) Basically, I wanted to have some fun with my Lake Monsters in a console football game, and brought along a few favorites from IHOF to increase my fun. Then I concocted a weird backstory to explain everything. Silly aliens.

Players to Watch

The Burn are led by their mercurial junior QB, Everett "Aces" Glenn. He is equal parts playmaker and playbreaker. For every spectacular run he makes, there will be a mind-numbing fumble on the way. You can be sure that every tight spiral thrown between two defenders will be followed by a wounded duck that is up for grabs. For San Luis Obispo, he is the yin as well as the yang.

Junior wide receiver Lamar Hymes is Glenn's most dynamic target. He has solid hands, and isn't afraid to go over the middle. He has good straight-line speed, but is not terribly agile.

On defense, true freshmen middle linebacker Quentin Sherry is the one to watch. With great speed and acceleration, solid tackling, and a nose for the ball, this stud out of Florida will be a force for years to come for the Burn. One wonders why he didn't take his talents to a more prestigious school like Florida. Or even USF.

I'll be using these sliders and Heisman difficulty on recruiting.

Reason for changes - Speed threshold due mainly to make the closing speed of defenders more realistic as it seemed that linebackers in particular were getting to running plays a bit too fast.

Interceptions are noticeably different since the last tuner, so this was the big change. Everything else status quo. Just had my first real defensive slugfest, beating Oregon State 14-0, stopped them on turnovers or change of possession three times inside my 30.

The long-awaited day of our major college football debut finally came in early September of 2012. In front of a small crowd in San Luis Obispo, California, the first quarter played out with each offense trying to feel out the opposing defense. In the early going, each defense generally held the opponent's offense in check. In the second quarter, San Luis Obispo's junior QB Everett Glenn broke the stalemate with a 24-yard TD pass to Lamar Hymes that capped off a 7-play, 67-yard drive.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hj5wy666fVw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The University of Rochester was able to answer on our next drive with a 30 yard Broderick Hidalgo field goal that made it a 7-3 game with 5:12 remaining in the first half, but a long return by Lamar Hymes on the ensuing kick immediately set up the Burn in scoring position on our 15. A few plays later, the Burn cashed in with a one-yard Darius Ford run that gave the Burn a 14-3 advantage.

Following another Ford rushing TD, we found ourselves trailing Trailing 21-3 with 3 minutes remaining in the first half. Senior QB Micah Dennis had hit on just 35% of his passes, so I decided it was time to give the freshmen Jackie Williamson a shot. Two plays later, the freshmen QB did this...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8rFnDZtTINc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Williamson's second pass as a collegiate QB found slot receiver J.B. Dennis running free across the middle, and Dennis took it 42 yards to paydirt to trim San Luis Obispo's advantage to 21-10.

On their next drive, the Burn missed a field goal attempt that would have made it a 24-10 game. Our offense got the ball back with :40 left in the half. A couple of plays later, Williamson ducked a sure sack and heaved the ball downfield...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lXCIETRJfmU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Junior wide receiver Amos Collins made a great grab, but was tackled in bounds. With no time outs remaining, Williamson hurried the team to the line of scrimmage, but the offense couldn't get set in time for the next snap, and we went into the half trailing 21-10.

In the third quarter, things quickly got worse for us.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/T4LKKXuXohc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Everett Glenn turned a broken play into a TD to make it 28-10 with this TD scramble.

Now down by three scores, it was beginning to be desperation time for Rochester. A quick 74-yard TD to senior Mo Godfrey with 6:20 left in the third brought us back to within 28-17. Following a three and out for the Burn, Williamson moved the offense downfield and had us inside of the Burn 10 when disaster struck. With nobody open, Williamson took off toward the endzone, but on his way to the goal line, he was stripped of the ball, and the Burn recovered it.

Starting from their own 4, the Burn drove it down the field. After we knocked San Luis Obispo QB Glenn out, freshman QB Chad Boatman came in and sealed the game with a 12-yard TD strike to halfback Jermaine Justice.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xMq8p643c3k" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Burn tacked on another score late in the fourth, to make it 42-17. All in all, a terrible FBS debut for the Lake Monsters. We clearly have a lot of work ahead of us. This was supposed to be our "easy" game... :(

Players to Watch

The Silicon Pirates are led by sophomore QB Devin Bergeron. Bergeron is very savvy for an underclassmen, and possesses a fine arm both in terms of arm strength and accuracy. He throws to a quality receiving corps that is highlighted by tried and true senior wide receiver Tracy Flowers and the sensational sophomore tight end, Chuck Farley. Farley runs great routes, can catch it in traffic, and is also a solid blocker. Junior halfback Michael Lazetti has speed, acceleration, and agility, and he can also catch the ball out of the backfield. In summary, our defense is probably looking at a very tough game.

We traveled to Gatesville, Texas in Week 2 looking to improve on our crappy performance in Week 1. However, things got off to a rocky start quickly.

1st quarter

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/RA5VFWj2smc?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The opening drive of the game was an eight-play, 62-yard drive that culminated with Devin Bergeron's 28 yard TD pass to senior Junior Maloney. The score was set up by a 4th and 1 conversion run by Michael Lazetti on the previous play.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kwNa23je2Qo?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

With 30 seconds left in the first quarter, we got our first break when middle linebacker Stephen Saad picked off Bergeron in the endzone. Unfortunately, Saad made a freshman mistake and tried to take it out of the endzone. When he was tackled on the 5, the rest of us became Saad too. A quick three-and-out followed by a short punt set up the Silicon Pirates with a short field. Smelling blood, junior running back Michael Lazetti asserted himself, toting the ball 6 straight times to move the ball to our 1. From there, junior fullback J.T Kearse took it in with 5:30 left in half, putting us down 14-0.

2nd Quarter

Early in the second quarter, a fair catch interference penalty set the Pirates up in good position at their own 37.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ggP2NcR5Heo?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It took them one play to capitalize with a 63-yard TD pass to freshman Derrick Alvarez. Now trailing 21-0 with 4 minutes left in the half, we made the decision to bench senior quarterback Micah Dennis in hopes of sparking the offense with Jackie Williamson, who had easily outperformed Dennis in Week 1. Williamson did get us one first down before we were forced to punt the ball away again.

http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012Week2Bergeron63YdTd.png

On Gatesville's next drive, we caught a break when Michael Lazetti was stripped and Tyrone McCotter recovered the ball. Before we could get a snap off on offense, the officials decided to review the fumble. After a minute under the hood, the call was reversed, and Gatesville got to keep the ball.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Bh1HG9BJzdQ?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

From there, a nice 24-yard catch by tight end Chuck Farley set up Alvarez's second TD reception from 28 yards out to cap off a 2-play, 52-yard drive. It was now 28-0 with 1:47 left in the second quarter.

http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012Week2ChuckFarley.png

With the benefit of hindsight, I can see that I should have called things more conservatively as we neared halftime. Instead, I put the ball in Williamson's hands. On his second pass, Williamson was intercepted by senior cornerback Raishaun Grant. To our defense's credit, we were able to force a three and out, but two plays later, Williamson was picked off once again, this time by strong safety Daryll Sutter. At least we learned from our first mistake.

Predictably, on the next play, Bergeron hit senior Tracy Flowers for a 23-yard TD. Now trailing 35-0, the game was totally out of hand.

With 45 seconds left until the half, we once again put the ball in Williamson's hands. This time, Williamson rewarded us with a quick 49-yard drive that set up 46 yard Hidalgo field goal. Success! Now we only trailed 35-3. The shutout was over!

Third Quarter

We got the ball first in the second half, and thanks to a holding penalty, we managed to move backward 16 yards before punting. From there, Lazetti ran the ball twice, first for 39 yards, and then for 3 yards and a TD. 42-3. On the sideline, I was praying for time to speed up and let us escape from this debacle.

-----

Our first 3rd down conversion of the game came with 3:23 in 3rd, due to an unnecessary roughness call.

-----

Late in third quarter, a J.B. Dennis punt return set us up with a short field.

Fourth Quarter

Having marched our offense inside the Gatesville 20, Williamson took off on a broken play and scrambled inside their 5, but he lost the ball in the process. The officials ruled it a fumble, but we challenged the call, and it was overturned. On the next play, Kevin Wiggins finished the drive with a 2 yard rushing TD, cutting it to 42-10 with 7 minutes left.

http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012Week2Lazetti33YdTD.png

I'd like to say we rallied from there to make it respectable, but truth be told, the Pirates tacked on two more TDs on their way to a final victory margin of 46 points, 56-10.

We have a bunch of recruits coming to town this week, so hopefully we don't crap the bed too bad against the University of Fairbanks Northstars.

Kodos

Fairbanks comes in to Rochester sporting a 1-1 record. Their loss came to #1 USC, and it should be noted that the Northstars led that game 14-10 at the half before falling 23-14. So clearly, they're pretty good.

The Northstars are led by sophomore QB Joey Allen, a traditional pocket passer with a cannon arm. Allen throws to a group of receivers known as the "Snow Bombs" comprised of seniors Edwin Turnbull and Edward Duval, sophomore Antonia Daggett, and junior William Duenas. Our secondary will have their hands full for sure. Daggett is the speediest of the trio. Sophomore runningback Mark Halley is also dangerous.

On defense, left outside linebacker Jeffrey Boggs hits with speed and power.

With the coming of Week 5, we finally had our first home game, hosting the University of Fairbanks Northstars. Fairbanks features a potent offense, so we looked to have our work cut out for us.

1st Quarter

The Lake Monster defense held Joey Allen’s offense to a three-and-out on the opening drive of the game. After the Fairbanks punt, senior QB Micah Dennis drove the offense into the red zone, where things stalled. Having learned from mistakes earlier in the season, we took the points with a 29-yard Broderick Hidalgo field goal, rather than risk coming away with nothing.

The Fairbanks offense came to life on their next drive. Allen led the team 70 yards in seven plays, capping things off with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Edward Duval off of playaction.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kCkzY7ZqFYE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

2nd Quarter

We started the second quarter trailing only 7-3. Our gameplan to run Kevin Wiggins down their throat was going great until he went down with a strained shoulder early in the second quarter. Wiggins had amassed 72 yards on 9 carries, but now he was out for the game. His backup, freshman Joe Boulware, struggled mightily in relief of the injured Wiggins. Soon more bad news came when Dennis threw an interception at midfield. To our defense’s credit, they held the Northstars to a 41-yard field goal.

Now trailing 10-3, a Micah Dennis fumble promptly set Fairbanks up on our 17. Once again, the defense gamely kept the Northstars offense at bay, forcing them into a 4th-and-inches on our 7 yard line. Joey Allen and the offense stayed on the field, challenging our defense to hold them at bay for one more play.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/WUOsegUBSw4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Allen’s fade pass was caught by Duval in the back corner of the endzone for Duval’s second score of the game. We challenged the call, saying Duval didn’t get a foot in, but the ruling was upheld. Fairbanks was now on top 17-3.

A Rochester three-and-out set Fairbanks up at their 47 with 31 seconds left and two timeouts remaining. A few plays later…

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/jaos1jLtwXw?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

… Edward Duval caught his third touchdown of the half from 27 yards out to make it 24-3. Heading into the break, we were in serious trouble.

Third Quarter

Coming out for the second half, we decided it was time to insert freshman QB Jackie Williamson into the game. Dennis had completed just 3 of 5 passes for 30 yards and an interception in the first half. Also, we needed to find a way to get Joe Boulware on track. Boulware’s 5 rushes for 4 yards were not going to cut it if we wanted to start moving the ball and take some pressure off of Williamson's shoulders.

We caught a break on the Northstars initial drive of the second half, when runningback Mark Halley was stripped by safety Ethan Palmer and cornerback Deon Ratan recovered the ball at the Fairbanks 43. Williamson and crew drove the ball a little closer, with Boulware finding a little more success carrying the ball, but we ended up settling for a 44-yard Broderick Hidalgo field goal that bounced off the crossbar and through, making it 24-6 with 2:40 in the left in the third quarter.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IyTTkZmE0so?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Any dreams of a comeback ended a minute and a half later when Antonia Daggett caught a 16-yard TD to make it 31-6.

4th Quarter

Late in the fourth quarter, Williamson drove our offense into the redzone. With time running out, we had one last chance to put up a touchdown and save a little face in front of the home crowd.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xDlVdt1Gzb8?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Williamson didn’t even get the ball in the air before he went down for our tenth sack of the game. Kinda a nice summary of our season so far. A total failure to launch…

Final score: Fairbanks 38, Rochester 6

Post-Mortem

In three halves of play, senior QB Micah Dennis has passed for only 89 yards while completing just 12 of 29 pass attempts. He hasn't thrown any TDs, but has fumbled and been intercepted once.

Freshman QB Jackie Williamson, in contrast, has moved the offense at times, and has thrown a couple of TDs. Yes, he's been a turnover machine so far, but we can work on ball control with him.

When we travel to face Buffalo in Week 7, Williamson will be the starter.

The Buffalo Bulls are led by junior runningback Branden Oliver. Oliver is a bowling ball of a runner who can beat you as a runner or as a receiver. He has amassed over 600 yards in 5 games (393 rushing yards, 211 receiving yards). He also returns punts and kickoffs. If we can slow him down, we could be looking at our first win of the season.

Fellow junior Alex Neutz is a rangy receiver who leads the receiving corps for the Bulls. He is fast, but has merely average hands.

Left outside linebacker Khalil Mack is a run stopper who can lay the wood on opposing backs who aren't vigilant. He doesn't have a ton of speed, so perhaps we could take advantage of him if we had a tight end with a pulse.

To me, the Bulls look very beatable. If we don't beat them, we may not win a game all season. Come on Jackie, reward us for making you the starter!

Instead of a full game writeup, I'll post "Snapshots" from our game against the Buffalo Bulls.

1st Quarter

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/NGQ3TYuO_jI?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

A Derek Pina interception of Collin Michael bailed us out on the Bulls first drive. Pina's interception inside our ten kept the Bulls off the board, but we went three and out and were forced to punt it away quickly.

-------

We caught a break on the Bull's second drive when sophomore kicker Patricke Clarke bounced a kick off the upright, keeping the game deadlocked at 0-0.

2nd Quarter

With 4:30 left in the first half, Broderick Hidalgo hit from 23 yards out to make it a 3-0 Rochester lead. The red zone has been tough sledding for our offense this season. On the plus side, we did get the points, instead of trying for the TD and coming away with no points.

-------

The Bulls ensuing drive took just 4 plays, as they drove 68 yards and scored on a one-yard Brandon Oliver rush that made it a 7-3 Bulls lead.

-------

With 30 seconds left in the half, we once again settled for a field goal inside the red zone, this time from 24 yards out. Still, heading into the half trailing only 7-6 on the road would have been considered somewhat of a win for the Monsters.

------

Junior wide receiver Fred Lee's 61-yard TD with 11 seconds left was a heartbreaker. Now, we went into the half trailing 14-6. (Sorry, no video. I had trouble getting the videos to upload for some reason. Rest assured, the TD looked like it came very easily.)

3rd Quarter

With a chance to cut the lead to 14-9 with 1:52 left in the third quarter, Hidalgo missed a 37-yard field goal attempt.

---------

http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012BuffaloRushingTD.png

A minute and five seconds later, junior RB Branden Oliver ran it in from 22 yards out to make it a 21-6 game. A comeback was going to be a tall order.

4th Quarter

Things got even worse in the fourth quarter. First, Jackie Williamson threw an interception that set up a Bulls field goal.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XEUhI0Ii190?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Then, Micah Dennis, in to relieve Williamson after a minor injury sidelined the freshman, fumbled the ball on his second snap. Defensive tackle Wyatt Cahill's 38-yard return on the fumble set up another Bulls field goal, putting us behind 27-6.

---------

With 2:01 left in the game, Jackie Williamson ended our red zone drought with 11-yard TD pass to Percy Glenn. J.B. Dennis caught the two-point conversion to make it 27-14.

---------

One of our guys briefly had his hand on the ball during the ensuing onside kick, but the Bulls ultimately came up with the ball, snuffing out any hope for a comeback.

Final score: Buffalo 27, Rochester 14

Post-Mortem

Our offensive line is a sieve. For the second game in a row, we allowed 10 sacks. Seven Bulls recorded sacks in the game, including three players who recorded two each. Keeping the tight ends in to pass protect has not helped very much. Williamson has been scrambling a lot out of necessity. He ran for over a hundred yards in the game, but gave most of that back in the form of sacks. Also, his accuracy needs to improve. He needs to plant his feet before he throws. At least he didn't have any fumbles this game. Baby steps.

This loss really stung. We played them pretty even in the first half. If we could have gotten the job done in the red zone, we might have taken a lead into the half knowing we'd get the ball first after the break. Instead, our defense allowed a huge catch and run TD, continuing a pattern of missed tackles creating big plays for our opponents.

We have a lot of work ahead. This team has very little margin for error if we want to win any games.

Indiana is led by sophomore QB Tre Roberson, a dangerous scrambler who is a work in progress when it comes to throwing the ball. His best targets are junior tight end Ted Bolser and junior wideout Kofi Hughes. Stephen Houston is a solid workhorse at runningback. The defense is young, but got a lot of experience during the Hoosiers 1-11 2011 campaign. This game looks winnable going in, especially since we are playing at home.

Week 9 presented us with one of our last best chances to avert a winless 2012 season. Indiana, historically a doormat in the Big Ten, came in with a 2-4 record. Despite some talent on offense, they looked beatable to me, if we didn't make too many mistakes. One problem we faced going into the game was that our best runner, Kevin Wiggins, was out with a torn pectoral muscle. That left us with Joe Boulware as our best rushing option. The lack of depth at runningback is one of the many issues this team faces. The dropoff after Boulware is steep as well.

1st Quarter

The game started off on the wrong foot, as freshman QB Jackie Williamson's turnover problem reared its head once more in the form of an interception that set Indiana up at our 21. However, our defense was able to hold them to a short field goal attempt from 25 yards out, which junior Mitch Ewald missed. Could this be a sign of things to come?

2nd Quarter

Still tied at zero all at the start of the second quarter, good fortune smiled on us again when sophomore QB Tre Roberson was knocked out of the game by our defense. Sophomore Cameron Coffman came in and led the Hoosiers to the first score of the game, a 31-yard Ewald field goal.

Needing the respond, our offense trotted back onto the field trailing 3-0.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Vw4v-6lFKjU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Two plays later, Williamson found Mo Godfrey wide open on a blown coverage. I was afraid the youngster might miss a player that was so wide open, but Williamson came through for us this time to give us a 7-3 lead with just under 5 minutes left in the first half.

IU didn't do much on offense with their next possession, and we took the ball over starting on our own 38 with 2 minutes left following a bad Mitchell Voss punt. Williamson and the offense hoped to convert the good field position into more points, but instead turned it into a three and out. The Hoosiers didn't do much on their next possession either, so we went to the half nursing a small 7-3 lead.

3rd Quarter

The Hoosiers struck first in the second half when Mitch Ewald hit a 26-yard field goal to trim our lead to 7-6 with 4 minutes in the third.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bMuPV8gt7Tk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Less than 2 minutes later, freshman safety Jarod Capps allowed Cody Latimer to fly past him unmolested on his way to a long catch and run, which set up a 9-yard rushing TD by Stephen Houston that made it a 12-7 game. Afterward, Houston ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 14-7.

With time running out in the third quarter, Broderick Hidalgo hit a field goal for us from 46 yards out to trim the Hoosier advantage to 4 points.

4th Quarter

Trailing 14-10, our defense held the Hoosiers to a three-and-out on their next possession, and a good punt return by J.B. Dennis set us up at our own 43 with 7 minutes and change. From there, fullback Nick Nightingale became a one-man show, moving our offense down the field on the ground and through the air.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/A6FdbYoaMjM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Joe Boulware's 3-yard rushing TD put us ahead 17-14 with 5:41 left in the game. Throughout the stadium, Lake Monster fans started to wonder... could this be our first win?

Our defense, who had played tough in our end of the field all day long, once again forced an Indiana field goal attempt in our red zone. Again Ewald missed, this time from 30 yards out with 3:23 left in regulation! The game was starting to tilt in our favor... if we could just find a way to finish it off.

Williamson and the offense came out hoping to eat some clock and move the ball down the field, but they failed on both counts. This was a time where Kevin Wiggins might have really helped us, but his backup Joe Boulware simply wasn't up to the challenge when we needed him. The result was three short runs, no first downs, and a punt. The one positive was that our offense forced the Hoosier defense to burn all of their timeouts.

Consequently, Cameron Coffman and the Hoosier offense were given another chance, trailing 17-14 with under 2 minutes remaining and no timeouts.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/qM6pRcumqCE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Hoosiers didn't take long on their way to paydirt, as they completed a 2-play, 52-yard TD drive with this long pass to junior wideout Kofi Hughes. We now trailed 21-17 with just 1:39 remaining in the game.

Starting at our own 35, Williamson and the offense came out with one last chance to drive down the field and score the winning touchdown. On first down, Williamson hit Boulware coming out of the backfield for five yards. Two incompletions later, we found ourselves facing fourth-and-5 with the game on the line.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-_dN8UPssUk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Facing heavy pressure from the defense and with nobody open, Williamson pulled the ball down and tried to run for the first down. He got past the first tacklers, but with one player left to beat, outside linebacker Ishmael Thomas took him down three yards short of a first down.

Game over. :(

Game Wrap Up

Just as we had thought coming in, this was a very winnable game for us. We needed to play perfect, but we came up short once again. Still, there were some signs of hope. Our defense was solid against the Hoosiers, holding them to field goal attempts instead of touchdowns. The Hoosiers did their part, missing a couple of very makeable field goals. Both teams had the dropsies, as IU racked up 8 drops and we had 5. Not a pretty game. Not a pretty result. Not a pretty season.

It's Week 10 of our first season in the Big East, and still we have no wins. Our remaining schedule looks like this:

Wk 11 @ Penn State (3-4)
Wk 12 UMaass (6-1)
Wk 13 Pitt (5-3)
Wk 14 Cincinnati (6-1)
Wk 15 North Plainfield (5-2)

Realistically, UConn may be our last shot at avoiding a winless season. Kevin "Chief" Wiggins is still unable to play, so we are stuck with Joe Boulware trying to carry the load at RB.

1st Quarter

Things get off to a bad start, as Williamson threw an interception early in the opening drive of the game. Worse, Williamson suffered a dislocated shoulder on the play. Our defense stood strong, holding UConn to a 43-yard field goal attempt that sailed wide left, keeping the score deadlocked at 0-0.

Our next drive went equally bad, as junior receiver Amos Collins fumbled the ball on our first play. We challenged the fumble, and the call was overturned. We drove the ball to the UConn 30, and found ourselves facing fourth and inches. We decided to bypass a 47-yard field goal attempt. We gave the ball to fullback Nick Nightingale, but he was stuffed behind the line, and the ball went over on downs.

2nd Quarter

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3G4aCIxXnt4?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The second quarter started off more promisingly, as Micah Dennis directed the offense on a 5-play, 66-yard drive that was capped with a 50-yard TD pass to tight end Ricky Morelli, making it 7-0, Rochester.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rh8BrD4VayM?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Huskies didn't take long to answer, as Xavier McCombs broke multiple tackles on his way to a 63-yard rushing touchdown. 7-7.

--------

As we approached the half, Rochester went on top again after a long Percy Glenn reception set up a 26-yard Broderick Hidalgo field goal, which made it 10-7 with 2:13 left in the first half.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/gm6hiH0pOvM?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

We held the Huskies to a three-and-out on their next series, but on our ensuing drive, outside linebacker Jory Johnson stepped in the way of Dennis's pass and took it 32 yards to the house, putting us down 14-10 with one minute left in the half.

It was looking like we might be able to retake the lead when Dennis drove into the red zone. Facing third and goal from the 6, Dennis tried to force a pass to tight end Kenyon Watkins. Instead of a go-ahead score, Dennis found the hands of a lurking defender, so it remained a 14-10 lead for Connecticut.

3rd Quarter

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3oqx9CeX2NA?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

A 44-yard pick six by cornerback Antoine Hall put us on top 17-14 less than a minute into the second half. The Huskies answered with an 8-play, 76-yard touchdown drive capped by another Xavier McCombs run.

-------

Later in the third quarter, a Terence Kennedy interception set Jackie Williamson and the offense up at our own 44. The offense would move into the red zone, but ultimately was forced to settle for a 34-yard field goal attempt early in the 4th quarter, which Hidalgo shanked badly, keeping the score 21-17 in Connecticut's favor.

4th Quarter

Another Williamson interception gave Connecticut the ball on our 35 with 4:30 left in the game. The Huskies moved the ball 21 yards to set up a 20-yard field goal, which Chad Christen knocked through with 2:17 remaining. With time running low, we trailed by a touchdown, 24-17.

Williamson and the offense got the ball back with 2:14 left and 2 timeouts. Needing a score, Williamson threw incompletions on first and second down, then took a 10-yard sack on third down, setting up 4th and long with the game on the line.

Needing a miracle, J.B. Dennis got open on 4th down, but Williamson overthrew him, sealing our loss (sorry, highlight wouldn't upload). The Huskies kicked another field goal as time ran down, and Williamson suffered the indignity of a safety on our final offensive play of the game. Final score: UConn 29, Rochester 17. (Note: For some reason, we got points for the safety in the box score.)

Postgame Analysis

Williamson was simply awful in the fourth quarter, as he completed just 2 out of 6 passes, was picked off once, and gave up 3 sacks, the final one for a safety. We are putrid, and will almost certainly finish the season 0-12. I feel like somebody is playing a cruel joke on us...

In the aftermath of the sanctions imposed by the NCAA, Penn State underwent a massive roster purge. Unfortunately, the purge was probably not bad enough for us to think we might defeat the once proud institution. On the other hand, for those of us who are still holding out hope for a win, this might be our last real chance.

Led by senior WR Mike Bonner and TE Antwaun Ricks, the Nittany Lion offense is decent, but hardly spectacular. The defense is highlighted by senior left outside linebacker Brigham Dennis, who should not be mistaken for the typical studs from Linebacker U. Still, the team is filled with upperclassmen, and that in itself represents a significant edge over us.

1st Quarter

It was a blustery day in the northeast when we traveled to play Penn State. The Nittany Lions began the game with the ball, and our defense held them to a three-and-out to start things off on the right foot for us.

Jackie Williamson and the offense came out looking to build upon the good start. Runningback Kevin "Chief" Wiggins was finally able to make a go of it with his torn pectoral injury, and we used balanced playcalling to move the ball down the field. Ten plays into the drive, Wiggins aggravated his injury and left the game. Still, consecutive receptions by tight end Ricky Morelli moved us into the red zone.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dI0tLOiwQug" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This catch by J.B. Dennis capped our 12-play, 67-yard drive and put us on top 7-0 with 3 minutes left in the opening quarter.

On their second possession, the Lions managed one first down before our defense forced another punt.

2nd Quarter

In the second quarter, the Penn State offense started to move the ball more effectively. Starting from his own 25, senior quarterback Bruce Andrews used short passes to move the ball to our 20. With the Lions threatening to tie things up, strong safety Ethan Palmer stepped up on third down and broke up a sure touchdown pass to Monte Anthony, forcing a field goal attempt by junior placekicker Kelvin Christian. Christian's prayers went unanswered, as his kick bounced off the crossbar and hit the turf, leaving us on top, 7-0 with 5 minutes to go in the second quarter.

A three-and-out by our offense followed by a fair-catch interference call against Deon Ratan set Penn State up at midfield. It took the Lions just five plays to tie the game up on a 4-yard run by junior Simeon Hopkins.

Things continued to go downhill late in the second quarter, when our top receiver, Amos Collins, left the game with a concussion. Still, Williamson and the offense mounted a solid drive with time running out in the first half.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/2CHExWwJ5DA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

MLB Reggie Sykes tried to knock down this pass by Jackie Williamson, but he whiffed, resulting in tight end Ricky Morelli taking the ball 48-yards to the house to make it a 13-7 Rochester advantage with 50 seconds! Regretably, Broderick Hidalgo missed the extra point, and the Lions were able to move the ball quickly into position for Christian to hit a 32-yard field goal as time expired, trimming our lead to 13-10.

3rd Quarter

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8W7Xh0Cxb-w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Simeon Hopkins's second rushing touchdown of the game put us behind for the first time, 17-13, with 1:24 left in the third quarter.

4th Quarter

The fourth quarter began with a Penn State three-and-out. Following a bad punt and a good return by J.B. Dennis, our offense started with the ball at midfield. After picking up an initial first down, our offense soon found itself facing fourth-and-2 from the Penn State 29. Trailing by 4, I made the call to go for it. Chief Wiggins, who had returned earlier in the half, made the gamble pay off, as he picked up the first down on a determined run. However, we soon were facing fourth and six from the 22. This time, we opted to take the points. Hidalgo's 39-yard field goal made it 17-16 Penn State with 5:13 remaining.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SDhOZmr7M7g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Two long passes to sophomore wide receiver James Gatewood set up this 2-yard TD pass to tight end Anwaun Ricks, which put us down 24-16 with just 2:40 left in the game.

Trailing by 8, Jackie Williamson and the offense moved the ball 57 yards in 11 plays. Now, they found themselves facing fourth and long from the 18. With the game hanging in the balance, Jackie Williamson dropped back and scanned the field. He spotted Ricky Morelli breaking free down the middle of the field, and lofted the ball over the defense....

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/tueSywuMo2c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

... only to watch helplessly as the ball sailed over Morelli's head when he slipped trying to make a cut. Game over. 0-8. This team just can't catch a break...

We are in hot pursuit of 2* runningback Brett Harris. We think he is significantly better than his star rating would suggest. We're high on his list, but have some ground to gain if we want to bring him into the fold. Luckily, as I alluded to earlier, I have a Jedi mind trick or two up my sleeve...* ;)

*I recently discovered that I accidentally (or maybe intentionally, I can't remember) had recruiting on All American. Judging by my recruiting class, All American is way too easy. A winless team in the Big East should not have the 27th ranked recruiting class. Anyhow, I bumped it up to Heisman (a couple of cycles ago), and now I will just work it into the story. Luckily, being an alien, I have a little bit of latitude in the storytelling. :D

When UMaass and the U of R moved up to the FBS prior to the 2012 season, many pundits predicted a season of futility for both teams. One journalist had even gone so far as to dub this game the "Futility Bowl". The name struck a chord with college football fans, and a rivalry was born.

As it turned out, the pundits had been halfway right. Eight games into our first season, we had eight losses to our name. The Merchantmen, on the other hand, had thrived thus far, and were in good position to make a run at the Big East title. Rumors of rampant steroid (and marijuana) use within the team swirled around the program, but to date, nobody had proven any wrongdoing.

1st Quarter

We won the opening coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. On UMaass's first drive, true freshman QB Russell Harrison (in for junior Justin McDavid, who was out with a broken arm) led the Merchantmen 76 yards in 9 plays to put them on top 7-0 with a 1-yard plunge from sophomore halfback Mark McConnell with 5:35 left in the quarter. In turn, our offense managed one first down before being forced to punt it back to the Merchantmen.

On their second drive, we gave up a bunch of yards again, but we did manage to slow them down a bit in the red zone, as we held them to a 30-yard field goal that made it a 10-0 UMaass advantage. It could have been worse for sure, but we were definitely not off to a good start.

2nd Quarter

Junior tight end Ricky Morelli came into the game looking for redemption after his slip at the end of the Penn State game had cost us a chance at victory. He didn't find redemption early on against UMaass, as he dropped a sure touchdown after we had driven the ball 57 yards in 15 plays. Instead of putting six on the board, we settled for a 36-yard Broderick Hidalgo field goal that trimmed UMaass's lead to 10-3.

http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012Wk12CancelFumble.png

The Merchantmen had moved the ball to midfield on their ensuing drive when strong safety Ethan Palmer stripped Mark McConnell and Carl Cancel took advantage with a 51-yard scoop-and-score that tied the game at 10-10 with 4 minutes left in the half.

Starting from their own 25 on their next drive, UMaass used a well-balanced offense to move into our half of the field, but our defense stiffened once more, and they were forced to settle for a 41-yard Champ Cunningham field goal. 13-10, UMaass.

Jackie Williamson and the offense couldn't get anything done on our next possession, and a short punt set the guys in orange up just short of midfield with 1:22 left in the half. This time, Mark McConnell made us pay in full, as he followed up a long run with an 11-yard rushing TD to extend the Merchantmen advantage to 20-10 with :45 remaining in the half.

Williamson and the offense came out hoping to shave at least three off of the lead, and things were looking promising when Williamson rolled to the right and hit Percy Glenn for a 45 yard strike right off the bat. Regrettably, a holding call quickly negated the big gain.

Undaunted, Williamson went deep again on the next play, this time finding a leaping Mo Godfrey for a 76-yard TD!

http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012Wk12GodfreyTD.png http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012Wk12GodfreyTDv2.png

http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012Wk12HidalgoMiss.png

Predictably, the football gods didn't let us celebrate very long, as Hidalgo shanked the extra point attempt to the right, leaving us down 4 at 20-16 with :13 left. Mercifully, our defense was able to thwart any hopes UMaass had of moving into field goal range before the half, and we went into the half trailing by 4.

3rd Quarter

A few minutes into the second half, disaster befell us, as Jackie Williamson was picked off inside the red zone by sophomore free safety Eddie Cole. Amazingly, wide receiver Percy Glenn stripped the ball from Cole's grasp, and Amos Collins made the recovery! On the next play, Williamson spotted an upcoming blitz, and audibled to a slant by Collins, who took the ball in for the score! With the successful extra point, we took a 23-20 lead with 4:26 left in the third quarter.

Later in the quarter, the Merchantmen found themselves facing 4th and 3 from our 30. Passing up a chance to tie the game, UMaass opted instead to go for the first down, and were rewarded handsomely for their gamble when Harrison found Tariq Lundy in the flats for a 25 yard gain. From there, Mark McConnell ran it in to put UMaass on top once more, 27-23, with one minute left in the third.

4th Quarter

We closed out the third quarter with a 40-yard strike to Ricky Morelli that set us up on the Merchantmen 22.

http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012Wk12Morelli17YdTD.png

Three plays later, Williamson hit Morelli in the endzone from 17 yards out to put us back in the lead, 30-27, with just over 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Needing a field goal to pull into a tie, UMaass moved the ball into our half of the field. Harrison, seeing a man breaking free down the right side of the field, launched the ball deep....

http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t446/KodosForPrez/2012Wk12PalmerInterception.png

... only to watch strong safety Ethan Palmer break on the pass and intercept it in the end zone!

Looking to pick up some first downs and drain the clock, our offense managed one first down before being forced to punt it away.

The freshman Russell Harrison and the Merchantmen offense took to the field starting at their own 26, trailing 30-27 with 2:29 remaining. A stop here, and we would be in great shape. Pacing the sideline, I watched in disappointment as Harrison methodically moved his team down the field like a seasoned upperclassman. Once again, with the game hanging in the balance, our defense was surrendering chunks of yardage on every play.

Into the red zone their offense rolled with great self-assurance. This was a team that was used to finding a way to win. Now, the Merchantmen were on the brink of winning the game outright, instead of sending the game into overtime on a long kick. With UMaass facing third and goal from the one with 30 seconds remaining, senior linebacker Terrance Kennedy nailed Mark McConnell in the backfield for a 2 yard loss that forced the Merchantmen to kick a field goal.

The now game tied at 30-30, Williamson and the offense took to the field with 25 seconds remaining after J.B. Dennis returned the ball to the thirty. We were able to advance the ball to midfield, but time ran out on us, and the game was sent to overtime.

The Merchantmen offense wasted no time, as Harrison hit a wide open Tariq Lundy from 12 yards out on just the second play of the possession to put them on top 37-30. The only other player within 10 yards was his teammate, Gabe Springer, who actually came quite close to unintentionally breaking up the pass.

The freshman Williamson led the offense onto the field once again facing a do or die situation. On the third play of the drive, Jackie found Amos Collins in the right front corner of the end zone from 6 yards out. With my heart in my throat, I watched Hidalgo line up for the tying point after attempt, but this time the kick was good, and the game was tied once more at 37-37.

Our defense didn't get a stop on the next possession either, as Mark McConnell scored his fourth touchdown of the day on a 6-yard run. This time, our defense had at least made the Merchantmen work for it with a 6-play drive. Forced to go for two now, Russell Harrison ran it in himself after he found no receivers were open. 52-44, Merchantmen.

With heartbreaking defeat just one bad decision away, Williamson led the offense onto the field needing a touchdown and a conversion to stay alive. Two plays into the possession, Williamson dropped back and made the decision to try running it in himself...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Z2Sx7vsfVDY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Scrambling to his right, nobody even touched Williamson before he crossed the goal line! 52-50.

Needing the two point conversion to force quadruple overtime, Williamson took the snap and found Amos Collins in the right front corner of the endzone, tying the game once more at 52-52.

4th Overtime

The gassed Merchantmen defense surrendered another touchdown in the 4th overtime, as Kevin Wiggins plunged into the end zone from 1 yard out to make it 58-52. On the two point conversion, Williamson tried to find Amos Collins once too often, and this time Merchantmen cornerback Tai Wayne was there to break the pass up. In a game where neither defense could stop the opposing offense, failing to get the conversion was a very bad omen.

I sent our weary defense out onto the field once more. "Just one stop!" I yelled. "Just. One. Stop!"

On first down, they gave the ball to McConnell, who plowed up the middle to our 10. Now facing first and goal from the 10, Harrison threw an incompletion.

On second down, sophomore cornerback Antoine Hall momentarily had the game-winning interception, but watched in disbelief as the ball slipped through his hands. "We can't keep giving these guys second chances!" I shouted.

On third down, Ethan Palmer broke on the ball, but like Hall before him, he lost the handle and the ball fell harmlessly to the turf. With UMaass now facing fourth and goal from the ten, I yelled "JUST ONE STOP!" to nobody in particular, and hoped that the defense had enough gas left in the tank for one more play...

On fourth and goal from the ten, Russell Harrison dropped back and scanned the field. His offensive line held off our exhausted defensive line for what seemed an eternity from the sideline, as Harrison patiently waited for somebody to come open. His eyes grew wide as he spotted Gabe Springer open in the back corner of the end zone. Without hesitation, Harrison rifled the ball in direction of Springer...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/qS_PFYYB0ME" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Harrison's pass came out of his hand without much arc on it, and Antoine Hall was in position to get between Springer and the ball and knock it down!

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1H3jAmVs0lA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Our stadium announcer was beside himself as he yelled "THE LAKE MONSTERS WIN! THE LAKE MONSTERS WIN!!!" again and again in disbelief. In a season of close losses, we had finally made a play with the game hanging in the balance, even if it took us quadruple overtime to do it...

Tight end Ricky Morelli earned a measure of redemption with 8 catches for 153 yards and 2 TDs. On defense, Ethan Palmer forced two turnovers (one interception, one forced fumble) and Antoine Hall made the game winning play. All in all, it took a tremendous team effort to beat a superior roster. You better believe I was jumping up and down after we won. :)

Runningback Ray Graham, who is averaging 6 yards a pop this season, headlines the offense for the Pitt panthers. After surrendering 266 rushing yards and 4 TDs to Mark McConnell in Week 12, we are not delighted to see another strong runner in Week 13. On the plus side, Panthers QB Tito Sunseri has thrown 15 interceptions against 15 TD on the year while completing just 45% of his passes. We might have troubles passing against their corners, so Williamson will need to be judicious with the ball. Maybe I'm still slap-happy from the UMaass game, but I think we could win this one.

1st Half

A sluggish start by our offense and a very yielding defense put us in a 17-0 hole early in the second quarter against the visiting Pittsburgh Panthers, but we were able to rally a bit to go into the half trailing only 17-10 after a Williamson hit Amos Collins on a 34-yard TD pass.

3rd Quarter

Early in the third quarter, we found ourselves trailing 24-10 after a long pass to tight end Hubie Graham set up Ray Graham's second rushing touchdown of the day just 40 seconds in.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/A994bYYec4g?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Later in the third quarter, this pass to Kevin Wiggins moved us into the red zone, and a few plays later, Wiggins cut it to 24-17 with a 6-yard run. However, 90 seconds later, Mike Shanahan's 21-yard receiving TD put us down two scores once more, and sent us into the 4th quarter trailing 31-17.

4th Quarter

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dMt4AkvFLbE?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Ricky Morelli's 20-yard receiving TD with 4:55 remaining cut the deficit to 31-24...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SDVgJb1rpSY?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

... and his 17-yard TD reception 2 minutes later pulled us into a tie at 31-31 with 3 minutes left in regulation. Having mounted yet another second half comeback, we just needed our defense to come up with a stop.

Facing third down and 6, Pitt QB Tino Sunseri tried to connect with Hubie Graham again, but Ethan Palmer was there to jar the ball loose just as it arrived, giving our offense another crack at the ball following a three-and-out by the Panthers.

A short punt set us up with the ball on our own 47 with two minutes left, but three consecutive incompletions soon forced us to punt it back to the Panthers.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Y_oIxj6obn8?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Starting from his own 26 with 1:13 left, Sunseri found Shanahan for 42-yards on the first play of the drive. Already in field goal range, Sunseri found Devin Street for 13 more on the next play. A 17-yard run by Ray Graham on the third play of the drive moved the ball down to our 1, and Graham punched it in on the following play to put us down 38-31 with 21 seconds remaining.

After a couple of incompletions, Williamson and the offense found themselves facing third and long with time running down. Needing a miracle, Williamson dropped back, set his feet, and launched the ball downfield...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3Fk5ZkTCUxU?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

... right in to the arms of sophomore cornerback Lloyd Carrington. Game over.

Closing thoughts

Our offense has been able to rally us late many games, but our defense has had trouble coming up with stops when we really need them. This team has a long way to go if we want to be anything more than a laughingstock in the Big East.

What, UMaass lost? :(
Probably cuz we're so not used to playing AT Rochester. :D

Thanks for the link, Kodos. I'll try to bump in from time to time to check this thread.

Btw, that was one incredible game.

Yep. I was sweating it out with each possession in OT.

By the way, this dynasty isn't dead, but between being without power for 6 days after Sandy, and then having a lot of other things going at once, I just haven't had a chance to play for a while. There will be more, but as I mentioned at the outset, this will be a slow-moving dynasty.

1st Quarter

Each team opened the game with a three-and-out. Following Cincinnati's turn at offensive ineffectiveness, J.B. Dennis dropped back to receive senior punter Pat O'Donnell's kick.

J.B. "Magic" Dennis's cutback allowed him to return the ball 73 yards untouched to give us a 7-0 lead !

On Cincy's next drive, when free safety Carl Cancel knocked out junior Bearcat QB Munchie Legaux on a QB keeper, I started to get a feeling that we might just be able to pull the upset. However, backup QB Jordan Luallen came on in relief of Legaux and led the Bearcats to a quick field goal.

On our next drive, Williamson drove the offense into scoring territory, but Broderick Hidalgo's miss from 41 yards out left our lead at 4 points, 7-3.

2nd Quarter

Cincinnati missed their own field goal attempt at the beginning of the second quarter, but a Kevin Wiggins fumble soon set them up deep in our territory. Our defense stiffened, and forced the Bearcats into 4th and goal from the one. The Bearcats opted to go for it, and Jordan Luallen ran it in on a designed keeper to put the Bearcats on top, 10-7 with 5 minutes left in the second quarter.

With 1:30 left in the first half, the Bearcats moved themselves into position to open things up a bit.

Nobody was anywhere near Alex Chisum when he pulled in a 2-yard TD reception from Luallen.

With 1:30 left in the half, and trailing 17-7, Williamson and the offense quickly moved the ball into the Bearcat's half of the field.

It'd be fair to say that senior cornerback Chris Williams' 71-yard pick six broke our spirit. It sent us into the half trailing 24-7 when we'd had a chance to cut the lead to 17-14 at the half. We went on to be outscored 21-7 in the second half to lose 45-14 in front of the home crowd. Not a good thing for team morale heading into our end-of-season showdown with our hated rivals, the University of North Plainfield Plague. :(

Alright, I know it seems like this dynasty is dead, but it's just been a very hectic period for me, and I haven't had time to tend to this dynasty. To move things along, I'm just going to post box scores and standings for the last couple of games. We were torched in both games. I will pick things up again in Season 2. With sliders that I don't get crushed so badly with (almost default Heisman sliders).
