Well it's another year. Here is Stereogum's list of most anticipated albums of 2011. (http://stereogum.com/582501/50-most-anticipated-albums-of-2011/franchises/listomania/) Naturally lots will get pushed back and so forth, but...it'll be interesting to see how this year flops out musically after what I think was a pretty strong 2010.
Here's metacritic (http://features.metacritic.com/features/upcoming-album-release-calendar/?tag=supplementary-nav;item;3)'s release calendar which is more encompassing.

I recognize such a small amount of those artist. I think just about all of the artist I look forward to put out an album last year so the only thing I can think of is The Civil Wars album hitting Feb. 1st.

Tenth Avenue North - The Light Meets the Dark
(Technically released in May 2010, but since I didn't hear them until Xmas and didn't start listening to the CD until after January 1, it counts for me. ;) )
A nice Jars of Clay vibe here.

#1 on my most anticipated list is Storm Corrosion, the long-awaited collaboration between Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt and Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson. Cannot wait for this.
I'm not really sure what else is coming out that I would like.

Currently, the things I listen to are:
Kanye West "My Dark Twisted Fantasy" - I'm not a big rap fan. This is by far the most cohesive album that I've listened to of Kanye's. It's like a rock album actually and there are layers upon layers here. You can listen to a song and get something further out of it. Now I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, I consider Kanye "emo-rap", but songs like "Power" (cheerleading rhythms, King Crimson), "All of the Lights" (Sounds like an update to Rocky's "Gonna Fly Now") and Runaway (getting crazy with the vocoder, to a point where the lyrics are just an ooze of emotion). There are some filler bits and some of the direction does get lost, which I think coming from someone as emotional as Kanye is to be expected...sometimes he just doesn't have the words to come across.
Grinderman "Grinderman II" - Other end of the spectrum, bluesy, rock, and somewhat unpolished. Nick Cave knows exactly what he wants. Songs like "Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man" are just experiences of loud and emotion but in one solid direction. "Wormtamer" is just as uncoy as it sounds. Unlike Kanye, Nick Cave enjoys a sense of humor about things even when he's in a mocking mood. No real ballads here, or I'm so sorry about me songs..."Palace of Montezuma" though is one of his best low key songs.
Bob Dylan - Rolling Thunder Review 1975 - Not as career defining as the Royal Albert Hall bootleg, but it's a more countrified/electric folk ride. I really like "Isis".
Miles Davis - Round Midnight
Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Jobim - Best Of
Jazz is beginning to re-enter my collection. Not so much that I want to be cultured, as much as I want something of an alternate to today's sounds.

I'm also not a big rap fan although Eminem's latest did get a lot of play in my car but my wife often has the TV on some video request channel and some of Kanye West's song have caught my ears. I loved his Stronger from a while back and I really like Power. Monster from the same album was used in a choreography of my wife's dance studio so I decided to give that album a shot and I'm glad I think. Likes most of the first 6 tracks on first hearing so thanks for the comment about it here.

Have been listening to the Girl Talk album recently again as well, real good fun :)
really love the new decemberists album (First Listen: The Decemberists, 'The King Is Dead' : NPR (http://www.npr.org/2011/01/03/132436422/first-listen-the-decemberists-the-king-is-dead%29). Was very curious what they´d do next after doing such an art-style concept album. Love to hear that it´s less (melo)dramatic than the previous effort. While i loved Hazards of Love i was sure i wouldn´t enjoy them go that route twice, seems i won´t have to worry about it :)
Also very much looking forward to the 2nd White Lies album called Ritual which is out in a few days.
Also looking forward to Death Cab, Foo Fighters, Lykke Li and Nick Cave.
Oh, and british girl and grammy winner Adele also will release her 2nd album, one of the songs (imo the best on it) from her debut :

This is Action Bronson. This guy is Queens born and bred and sounds like it.
I'll just quote someone else:
Bronson brings back that Nautica jacket and Timbs at the Fulton Street Mall music. The is type of music you rocked while hanging out on the stoop all day, while putting down an order of four wings and pork fried rice from the Chinese food spot – get the 20oz Peach Arizona Iced Tea pairing for a complete hood tasting menu at 5.25 (circa ‘95).
Alternatively if you weren’t around for David Dinkins’ New York, this is the type of music you’d imagine that Bishop and Q would be rocking in Juice as they cut school to play Street Fighter I.

Listening to the new Cut Copy album Zonoscope. Loving 'Take Me Over' but i really don't know if the album is going to be able to compete with In Ghost Colours which has probably risen (retroactively) to my favorite album from 2008.

Asobi Seksu was so-so. Drive-By Truckers was great -- this is the third album of theirs I've heard, and with each new album I keep thinking I'll finally get sick of them, but I haven't yet.

As a change of pace (since those do seem to occasionally be appreciated in this thread), here's a link to the Sleaze Roxx Readers Top 20 albums (http://www.sleazeroxx.com/bestof2010fan.shtml) of 2010.
Wouldn't normally drop a list in this thread but the vast majority of these I've spent a relatively decent bit of time listening to over the past year'ish & several still get some time from me. I figured the synopsis included with each entry might help the unfamiliar decide whether it was something worth checking out.
FTR, only three of my personal five (which is what reader's submitted) made the top 20. That would be Airbourne, Scorpions, and Accept. I also had A7X at #1 and Fozzy at #4.

Three tunes which I've come across recently, the last two can be a bit risque - so you've been warned:
The Way It Seems - Rosco Wuestwald
This is a very acoustic track and really kinda neat imho
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHvpRYidLAM
The Grant Spectacular - being a Di**heads cool
Its a fun upbeat track - simply a fun mickey take on being trendy, I tend to work out to tunes like this
(slightly dodgy lyrics)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVmmYMwFj1I
The Rubber Bandits - Horse Outside
This is an irish band, bit like the pogues with a touch of sex pistols ...
(very dodgy lyrics - you've been warned)

Delopoulos released a solo album in the fall of 2007, originally titled As If Love Were A Sword but changed to Straightjacket (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straightjacket) before release. He and Philippidis are planning to make new music re-united as Burlap to Cashmere following that.
There were Winter/Spring 2007 dates for Burlap to Cashmere touring with Jars of Clay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jars_of_Clay) and NEEDTOBREATHE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEEDTOBREATHE), with Delopoulos and Philippidis performing an acoustic set as a duo. The two have since reunited with original drummer Theodore Pagano the rumored new Burlap to Cashmere album is well under way with its title track having recently been written. Burlap to Cashmere signed a deal with Sony Music Entertainment and are recording their new record with producer Mitchell Froom.

Have you heard the new Whitesnake song? Not bad at all, kinda harkens back to a combo of the Slide It In sound with the gloss of the Still of the Night era. Coverdale sounds good, but looks like an unnatural freak.

I'll have to show this to my daughter. She practically turns blue in the face singing along to this in the car. So the last time, I got so annoyed/bored by it that I started singing, "I wet my hair with a fork" over and over until she started laughing and the song mercifully ended.

Heard it once to this point, didn't reach much of a conclusion on it at the time.
Listened again prompted by your question & I think I've put my finger on what threw me on the first listen. I come away from it feeling like the vocal doesn't quite go with the music. I like the groove of it, thought the vocal was solid & especially for this stage of his career (he'll be 60 later this year for crying out loud), but somehow the two things don't quite fit together exactly right. Maybe that's coming from the production, maybe it's something else, but whatever it is I think it throws me off from being able to complete sell out for it.
And Coverdale looks like Alice Cooper's half-brother after bad plastic surgery.
For the rest of the thread, here's the song in question Love Will Set You Free, from next week's release of "Forevermore" on Frontier Records (Italian label that's steadily resurrecting the 80's and early 90's)

I think it's Coverdale with a bunch of younger guys so it comes across as a cover band sound even with Coverdale singing lead. From just a musical standpoint, you won't pick it out as being Whitesnake. It's just another hard rock band. The song suffers from too much repetition as well.

I think it's Coverdale with a bunch of younger guys
Reb Beach (48 in August) & Doug Aldridge (47) thank you for that ;)
Younger than, say, John Sykes or Adrian Vandenburg, but at worst it's a push in terms of ability to play the style. The drum slot is weaker but Cozy Powell is dead, Aynsley Dunbar is 65, and Tommy Aldridge is 61 & lost his last gig (Thin Lizzy) after breaking his collarbone in 2009. Original bassist Neal Murray has been gone from the group for more than 20 years, although Rudy Sarzo was stable as his replacement for most of a decade before they've gone through three in the past 5 years.
All of that though is mostly just par for the course with the band, which starting with Slide It In in 1984, never had the same lineup for two straight albums, and that album had a different lead guitarist for the UK vs US versions. The constant switching continue with 1987's Whitesnake where the album was recorded with one set of musicians (basically the '84 lineup) but the videos & tour were with a largely different cast.
In the end, I'm not sure that the sound difference you're hearing isn't mostly intentional and/or production driven. If you listen to a lot of the Frontier Records releases of the past few years, there's the same sort of thing on much of it, regardless of how many original members are left.

I picked it out as Whitesnake for sure. Almost a bit too much like some of the 80s stuff, actually. But for some older bands, that's a much better route to go in 2011 than trying to forge a new sound that fits in with what's currently in.

All 2010 releases but I'm still digging Kanye's latest. I think the 5 star ratings hold up. Pink Friday by Nicky Minaj has a bunch of really good moments, but too much of it is forgettable. Kid Cudi's Man on the Moon2 is pretty uneven as well. I think he needs to cut back on the weed, as the first album just worked as some emo sci fi concept album. The new CD still has some top notch stuff on it.

I wanted to comment about Hometown Glory when you posted about it because I've been in love with that song ever since seeing a dance group from my wife's dance studio do a number to it. Other than that, been listening to some stuff from before 2011 but that is new to me. Among those, The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place from Explosions in the Sky while playing FMHi2011 and also from B.o.B, The Adventures of Bobby Ray.

I guess this would explain why I don't listen to disposable pop music, because that song is virtually indistinguishable from every other tween-directed pop song I've heard. I don't like it, but it doesn't sound any worse than most of the other stuff I hear on Radio Disney. I can't tell the difference between the shit and the supposed high quality stuff. That song is certainly not on the Chocolate rain level, though.

Local newspaper hyped a fairly new website today, seemed like something that folks in this thread might enjoy.
Rank your favorite songs by your favorite artists | Rank 'em (http://gorankem.com/)
Basically you register & then rank up to 20 favorite songs from your favorite artists. Those are compiled & then, for example, if you wondered what songs you should check out from an unfamiliar artist then you'd be able to get recommendations from others who like that artist. The track listings aren't perfect (entire new EP from Halestorm missing for example, just one I spot checked) and the versions available to be ranked are curious to say the least (several live bootlegs from Ratt are listed, tracks from the original album are missing) but considering the scope, it isn't really terrible.
Personally I don't know how useful the site would be for actually finding new music but that's the theory behind it. I figure at worst it's a reasonably interesting time waster, especially when you start trying to figure out which song to drop or keep in at #20 when it's an artist that you've followed for decades.

So far, it doesn't sound terrible. Here's one of the reviews from the site from a person I follow:
I disagree it's "distressing to hear yet another artist hop about the retro-stylized British soul-pop bandwagon" as stated in the review. That bandwagon has been rolling since the 60s, when it wasn't "retro" at all, but a contemporary homage to the sounds the Brits heard coming out of Motown. Northern Soul, anyone? It's been a pervasive, ongoing, and huge influence on British pop ever since. Nothing new or opportunistic about it.
Anyway, this album is fairly pleasant. Plan B sings in a Smokey Robinson falsetto, with some raps, and does not embarrass himself doing it. That's one thing I've always really liked about the British take on American soul-pop -- they do it with commitment.
To me, it sounds more like Daniel Merriweather meets a more pop version of Jamie Cullum sans pianos.

Kinda randomly, I'm in a run of "not listening" at the moment. Awfully weak batch of rock singles at the moment, not a lot of new album releases that have truly captured my fancy either. One of the deader stretches of music I can recall in at least a year, probably closer to two years now. Just a lot of "eh" if not downright "meh".
Kind of odd about the what's being pushed to radio at the moment too, this time of year is usually more uptempo that what's getting played/released right now. Instead, it's a run of mid-tempo or less & that just seems like entirely the wrong mood. Maybe we'll have a great May or even June to get things rolling again.

Little different approach in that the structure develops a little faster within the songs (if that makes any sense ...), some vocal-like snippets and even a short single-type song of just 3 1/2 minutes, but overall same old EITS sound which i don´t mind quite frankly, gives me chills and after 4 years it´s nice to have some new sounds to play in my head :)

It's not new at all, and I usually hate things that are labeled as "beatle-esque", but damned if Dusk at Cubist Castle by Olivia Tremor Control isn't just that. Really awesome.

I've been enchanted by Adele's sophomore album, "21," for the last few weeks. Here are the two singles:
same for me, discovered her through Hometown Glory, then picked up 19 just before 21 came out and finally picked up and started to listen to 21 a few weeks ago too and I've loved it a great deal. Lots of soul in that voice.
Did you see her on Dancing with the Stars this past Tuesday? Was kinda neat. My wife knew about nothing about her and she had to agree that her voice is something special.

Of the 20 albums I have gotten this year that are from 2011, here is how I am ranking them.
1. Fleet Foxes
2. PJ Harvey (but this is a CLOSE #2)
3. Tennis
4. John Vanderslice
5. Tune-Yards
6. The Strokes
7. Radiohead
8. Panda Bear
9. Here We Go Magic
10. Lykke Li
11. Smith Westerns
12. The Kills
13. Beastie Boys
14. Yuck
Unremarkable: REM, Klaxons, Gil Scott-Heron (XX remix), ...Trail of Dead, La Sera, Vivian Girls
Man, I have been trying HARD to love the new Radiohead, but it just fades into the background every time I listen to it. If you do not have the new Fleet Foxes or PJ Harvey yet, I plead with you to check them out, at least a little bit. Fleet Foxes is not much of a progression from their last album, but it is just enough that I absolutely love it. And PJ Harvey, I have never really liked much outside of a single here or there, but this album just fits together so well. It is truly outstanding.
As far as Tennis goes, it reminds me some of The Sundays. Bouncy, light songs that get in and out. The singing and songwriting is nowhere near that level, but it is an album of solid, fun pop songs.
John Vanderslice... if you've ever liked his music, the incorporation of an orchestra really fits in well with his style.
Tune-Yards is growing on me... only 2-3 songs now are actively skippable. That odd experimentation in the songs takes some getting used to, but I am there and really enjoying it.
The Strokes are getting not very good reviews for Angles, and while they don't really tread much into new territory, I like this album more than any of theirs since their debut.
Past #10, my recommendations get kinda meh, and I really haven't revisited the "unremarkable" pile since my first impressions of them.

God I hate that Tennis album the more I hear it.
My top five at nearly the halfway mark would be Fleet Foxes, The Dodos, Beach Fossils, Smith Westerns, and Cut Copy. 2010 was a much better year for music. I think only Fleet Foxes may have even gotten into my top 10 from all of last year.
I haven't really listened to the Strokes, TVoTR, or Okkervil River much yet, but they all seemed a step down from their last albums. In my brief listen, the new Wild Beasts sounds pretty good. The antlers whole album sounds like a Radiohead B side.

Yeah, I thought so too, you kind of have to work at it to get a lot from them ... and the whole "randoms clips from 3-4 songs mixed up out of sequence" thing was a bit overdone for my taste.
and it falls in the copy/paste metal sound, but it's still done well enough to stand out.
I thought the guitar work was interesting, the drums were clearly Portnoy, and the thing that appealed to me most was the 80'seque/melodic rock harmony that we got a glimpse of a couple of times. That's something that actually isn't used hardly at all today outside of some prog rock/metal & retreaded melodic rock artists, so it had some real appeal to me.

Wow, what a stunner. New Opeth record, which comes out in September, is totally free of death/harsh vocals and is heavy on the 70s prog sound (no real stunner there, though). It features a clarinet solo. I'm not sure what to think. Ten years ago, I would have said this is the only way I'd llisten to them, free from death metal vocals. Now, though, I feel differently, as I've grown to accept the sound and particularly with this band, how well it initegrates into the music and really highlights the heavy/soft dynamics in the music.
I hope this gives them a better shot at a wider audience, though, because they are the best band on the planet right now, IMO. At least I'll be able to play something other than Damnation in the car when I'm with the family...
Opeth are no strangers to stepping far away from their death metal sound, what with writing the chilled-out progressive rock album Damnation and having the odd song here or there void of any sort of death metal influence. Opeth have always carried a classic prog rock influence about them, which definitely came out in the album artwork for their upcoming album Heritage (above), leading many to speculate that the album might further explore those 70′s rock influences. Now, it would appear as though Opeth mastermind Mikael Akerfeldt is done with the death metal sound and went all out classic progressive rock on Heritage.
This weekend during my regular perusal of the internets, I came across this particular post (http://www.reddit.com/r/progmetal/comments/hrscy/mikael_bored_of_death_metal_since_90s_and_its/) on the Prog Metal sub-Reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/progmetal/) that links to Finnish metal zine Inferno (http://www.inferno.fi/blogi-opeth-heritage-ilm-20-9-4914/), where one particular writer attended a press listening party of the album. Here’s my paraphrasing of the good bits from Google’s translation (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fi&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.inferno.fi%2Fblogi-opeth-heritage-ilm-20-9-4914%2F). If I’m off base here, let me know:The album was presented in 5.1 surround sound “for the first time, until today. I didn’t even know they presented it to journalists in surround sound. I had my doubts, but the end result gave me goosebumps, “said Mikael Åkerfeldt. The album is about 56 minutes in length, and a lot happens in that time frame—it all feels very tight. The following things came to mind, among others: Black Sabbath, The Beatles, jazz, King Crimson, Cream, Rainbow, Floyd, funk, Purple, Piirpauke, classical music, My Dying Bride, folk, Love, Jethro Tull, Iron Maiden …The disc does not have any death metal or harsh vocals. The sound carries a lot of 70′s influence, and isn’t very powerful by modern standards. Keyboards, piano, and mellotron appear often.”Intro,” for example, features keys alongside double bass and clarinet. “We don’t care what others think,” Åkerfeldt said, “and if the fan’s don’t enjoy it, that’s their problem.” The frontman also said that he’s been tired of “extreme metal” since the 90s, but could not explain why. At this point in time, as far as Opeth is concerned, the death metal sound is over.“I wanted to make an album like this since my twenties”, Akerfeldt said, adding that exploring these influences further would have been possible sooner had it not been for Opeth’s popular death metal roots. Not a single journalist had a bad word to say about Heritage. Regardless, it’s safe to say that the album will create a stir with its 70′s Prog style.I couldn’t be any less shocked, but I am a bit apprehensive about it. It just figures that the greatest voice in death metal is sick of death metal. Cruel irony…
Heritage will hit stores this September on Roadrunner Records. It’ll probably still be pretty damn sweet.

Just got the new Drake Bell EP, A Reminder, on Wednesday, and it's really good. I know I get a ton of shit for being a 40-year old male listening to Drake Bell, but the dude is really a talented musician, not just an actor thrown behind a mic to make Disney/Nickelodeon a ton of money. Sadly, he is one of very few artists waving the power pop banner these days, and you can tell it's authentic because (a) his original songs are solid (the major/minor chord progressions on Terrific are, well, terrific), and (b) his covers show a deep appreciation for the genre. Not only has he covered Jellyfish before, but on the EP, he covers a song from the band The Argument, who put out a fantastic album about 7 years ago.
If you can get past the fact that he's an actor with a fanbase consisting of nearly entierly screaming tweens and you like good pop/rock that has a Beatles/70s power pop vibe to it, check him out. He's by no means the greatest thing on earth, but he's more than just an actor who sings.

It's been a pretty slow transition that's been coming, though. They already did an entirely clean vocal album once before, and the last album had several songs that were entirely or almostly entirely devoid of death vocals. So it's not THAT big a shock, I guess. The bigger shock for me is the idea, if true (dude has a sharp sense of humor, so you never know), that he's been over extreme metal for years and is completely done with death metal vocals.
I would have thought this side of him was satisfied by side projects, such as the upcoming Storm Corrosion album with Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. Get out the mellow stuff there, and still hit hard with Opeth. I guess we'll see. As much as I love Burden, I don't necessarily need an album of it.
As far as fan reaction - most of that will occur in Europe. The band isn't known enough in the US to create some sort of huge backlash that will really be felt. If anything, the positive I take from this is the opportunity for the band to be heard by people who never heard them before, or who refused to listen because of the death metal vocals.

That's what I'd been thinking about Corey Taylor too, but there sure does seem to be a lot of smoke about the possibility of him leaving Slipknot altogether (and where there's smoke yada yada). I guess we never really know what's in the heads of a lot of these guys.

Black Stone Cherry + Pop Evil + two unsigned bands (at least one of which, Lansdowne (http://youtu.be/cLJkU_Ln6CQ), sounds pretty good, the other I haven't found much from yet)

I've been listening to Kyng on XM Liquid Metal for months now. They got some big backing as an unsigned band from LM, I guess because they have members from the band Ankla and another band.
They sound like Sabbath/LZ with a Chris Cornell sound-alike vocalist. Good stuff, although they tread on Soundgarden a little too closely at times. But heavier.

The single from the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album is out today (streaming at this link: The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ New Single “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” From Their Upcoming Album, ‘I’m With You’ (http://kroq.radio.com/2011/07/15/kroq-exclusive-world-premiere-of-the-red-hot-chili-peppers-new-single-the-adventures-of-rain-dance-maggie-from-their-upcoming-album-im-with-you/2/) ).
Heard it over the weekend, I'm still stifling the yawns. It's not terrible, it's just ... there. Not even bad enough to warrant changing the station.
YMMV of course.
And LOL (not at you, at them) at the "exclusive world premiere" business. It played on radio in Atlanta Saturday morning & I'm sure if a half-assed station like the one here had it then there were plenty of others.

Burlap to Cashmere's new album after a Chinese Democracy type break partly due to one of their members being nearly beaten to death is out tomorrow.
Pre-ordered it last week. Already downloaded in iTunes this morning. Listening now.
It's very, very good.

I've spotify-ed my top 5 albums of the year so far.
http://open.spotify.com/user/christophermarciano/playlist/4oV3bpBZDTwSzl9CAuFc7d
1. Beach Fossils - What a Pleasure
2. The Dodos - No Color
3. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
4. Cut Copy - Zonoscope
5. Givers - In Light
Maybe it's just me, but it's been a pretty mediocre year in music so far. I struggled to come up with 5 albums I've enjoyed enough to even get to 5 albums. By this time last year the cup was running over with damn good records (at least in indie rock circles). Last year we have The National, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Los Campesinos!, Local Natives, Surfer Blood... and those are the ones I can think of that I know came out early in the year. There's been nothing even approaching those albums for me.

You know what I've been listening to lately? The 20% of my music collection that was previously unavailable to my Windows Phone 7 device thanks to iTunes bitch-ass DRM.
Thank you, Requiem.

HOLY CRAP - new Opeth song leaked (or was recorded off the radio and uploaded to YT). I think I just got a chubbie!
If you like 70s prog, check this out. Not a single bit of death metal vocals will be on the album.

Oh shit yeah.. THIS is the Opeth I want to hear.
I've been listening a lot to the Nirvana "Newermind" covers album released by SPIN magazine and this new band from Seattle I am really excited about hearing more from, Absolute Monarchs.. Also Cunninglyguists new album is outstanding as well.. They continue to be the most underappreciated hip hop group out there, IMO.

Okay, having now sampled the new Opeth, I'm overwhelmed with one thought
"You are witnessing the birth of Opeth Mark II ... on the bass, Mister Derek Smalls, he wrote this"

I am basically the opposite of the "hey look at my weird musical tastes" guy (though I'm glad he's here), as my deal is basically to wait until something persuades me to buy an album, then I listen to it with full intent of giving it enough spins to really judge what I think. And I am a committed album-listener, too, not a pick-and-choose type.
Anyway, from fairly recent music, I think there are two albums in my general area of tastes that have potential to be regarded as all time greats, and both are on my regular rotation right now.
Avett Brothers - I and Love and You
Excellent artist and a genius producer, album is off the charts good and plenty deep.
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Theme albums are tough to pull off, this one works awfully well.

ft. Otis Redding
<iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bSFwdBb6d0Y" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Really fresh song, no set verses, and no chorus. Just them trading bars back and forth.

I hate the fact that the Otis Redding part continues on and you get this cross conversation thing going on and it really takes away from the track for me.

That is one poorly written headline and article. I thought it literally meant the new singer sang in the movie Rock Star, so I assumed he was the guy from Steelheart. The article made no sense until I kinda unraveled it all.

Ditto my confusion ... but that's roughly the same version that ran everywhere I saw it.
And it's compounded by not entirely trusting George's side of the story (although given Logan basically being too drunk to perform & falling down/off stage late last year during a short stint on the road, I suppose there's some credibility there).

Now I know country isn't a big favorite around the FOFC, hell I listen to very little of it myself these days, but this is a special case afaic.
From left to right, that's Jason Aldean (Macon, GA), Colt Ford (Athens, GA) and Brantley Gilbert (Jefferson,GA). The song was written by Ford & Gilbert and eventually taken to #1 by Aldean.
This live version comes from a recent event, organized by Ford, that raised $85,000 for the families of two police officers shot in the line of duty here in Athens earlier this year. One died, the other is still recovering. An unusually large singer/songwriters event - 9 in all - that also included Edwin McCain & Rhett Akins among others.
The way I figure it, if they're willing to donate their time & talent (some of them coming off the road for a night to participate) then the very least I can do is spread the word a little bit. They deserve some hype afaic.

Tha Carter IV on Monday? Tha Carter IV (Deluxe Edition) by Lil Wayne - Preorder Tha Carter IV (Deluxe Edition) on iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/us/preorder/tha-carter-iv-deluxe-edition/id459912709)
I guess it was inevitable that it would come out, I just figured that he would have released it by now and it seems very random how the release seemed to materialize out of nowhere. I kind of thought he was just going to keep milking people for singles as it seems to be a very profitable means to earn income.

<iframe width="420" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rGBEgLXy6rU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> - Timber Timbre - One of the most unique sounding bands I have ever heard. Somewhat Pink Floydish.

Acoustic version of the new single from Pugwash, one of my favorite British power pop bands no one's ever heard of. They have a distinct McCartney sound, and the lead singer looks kinda like a fat balding version of Paul (maybe he's the original Paul rumored to be dead but incognito):
