I am still trying to figure out the touchline instructions. The top 2 boxes, Strategy, and click to issue instruction are greyd out. The only one that is not is the shortcuts. Anyone know how to fix this?

I was messing around with my coaching assignments and just found the oddest thing. My current goalkeeping coach has a 5 in working with youth, so it was no shock to me that he was a two star coach for the youth squad. After I get promoted and allowed to have a couple more coaches I hire a guy who has 15 working with youth. I assign him as the youth goalkeepers coach and its still two stars. The guy is a four star coach for the senior squad. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

I don't think Working with Youngsters is calculated in the star formula. Is this new guy coaching way more players or even coaching another position in addition.

Do you have any goalkeepers on the youth training schedule? That happens to me when im in england and I dont have any 16 years or younger GKs, since 17 and above are on full professional training schedules.

Looks like this is the reason. I guess I'll have to find a youth GK and see what happens.
On another note it sure seams like the difficulty level between League 1 and Championship League is pretty big this year. I'm at the 1st of November and just now got out of the relegation zone. I'm enjoying the challenge but this is the first version of FM that I've spent so much time in the basement.

Well, after that rough start to the 2010-11 season, we finished strong, very strong, with a streak of 23 undefeated games, on our way to win the the Premier Blue Square AND the FA Trophy. Had a crowd of 84k in the FA Trophy final which after checking on the competition's wikipedia page seems a bit generous. I mean, the biggest crowd ever IRL is in the 50k I think. Anyway, won't complain about the $900k in gates money. :)
I finished as manager of the month in February, March, and April, on my way to being named Manager of the Year.
We scored tons of goals in that second half of the season, winning regularly 3-0 or 4-1 at one point, thanks to a great group of three strikers that really complemented each other and never went into a slump all at once. And when two of those three went down with injury at the same time, I was able to bring in a crazy young striker from Man U on loan. That kid went on a crazy streak playing striker in a trequartista role that suited him very well. Right off the bat, he scored something like 8-10 goals in his first four games, averaging 8.95 in ratings over his first 7-8 games.
Overall, I was very happy with how the team came to play together. The players I brought in really contributed and made the team that much better. Even better, I realized that my board will now allow me to double my number of coaches and scouts, from 4 to 8 and from 3 to 6 respectively. Started shopping for those. :)

I had a very similar situation with my York Minstermen, except I had only 2 fairly consistent strikers. When they went down, I got a loaner from a Premier League that finished scoring 18 goals in 14 games as my deep forward. It was enough to win the BSP with 2 matches left to play when Wrexham took a nose dive.
I was doing the bit with hiring new coaches and scouts and waiting to see what kind of budget I was going to get from my board when I got a call out of the blue from Alastair Johnston, Chariman of the Rangers. When he said he wanted me to come in and take over the team, I thought it was my assman playing a gag on me. He is also a Glaswegian. Then, when he said that he would give me a 2-year deal that would increase my salary from $750/wk to $21.5, I KNEW it was him, the little bastard. So I told him 3 years or he could cram it and hung up.
Short story long, I am now the nobody American running the Rangers. Or was. My hard drive appears to have gone the way of the dodo.
So I've apparently been scouting too much. I'm not a big soccer fan IRL, but I just had a guy come in my store with a jersey on that had "Olimpia" on it. I asked him if that was in Honduras, he was suprised I knew, lol.

I was stuck in the airport and, having previously anticipated getting stuck might happen, installed the FM Demo I had downloaded.
The only game I've really played, off and on, for the past 3 years, has been World of Warcraft. Well, I think I'm going to dump it for FM2010.
Anyway, question: When you start the game your coaches give you some options as to formations that might work out with the current squad. However, after I bought a bunch of guys I thought it might to get a re-analysis from my assman about what the best formation would be. How do you get this specific advice out of him, though?
And one more time: Gah....

As for your question, I was wondering about it but had not answer to it until I went through the off season last evening and saw my assistant offer his advice for possible formations when the squad came back for training camp. I could find a way to solicit that information from him, he simply offered it through one of those backroom staff meeting, the one right after players reported to camp.
Agree with DT though, would be pretty nice if we could ask for that advice, on top of the team report you can get from your assistant.

I have a complaint, and it frickin' pisses me off.
For some reason, when Im in an attacking throwing position, either side ALL of my team crashes inside the box and of course once every 4 games the opposing team gets an outlet, breaks and gets their one on one. Its BS because when I go look at my individual player settings BOTH my DC are *back. So WTF. Team settings arent the variable as it happens on all the settings. PHUCK!
FWIW, twice in the game im playing right now, 1 went for a goal 1 did not.

back to back games, this time in the Champion's League and they missed their one on one...its been going on a long time and I just now decided to write something about it. I cant understand the stupidity of an entire team to leave no one back especially considering that theyve been told (2 of them) to stay back.

I dont usually mess with the set pieces part of tactics, but i believe in there are options for where to position players on throw ins individually...setting them to defensive mentality wouldnt make a difference if the tactic dictates they go forward on throw ins...i would look there first.

If you have a player who can do 'long throws' then it is possible that the defenders are taking up positions expecting a throw into the box (ie. corner positions) - so you have DC's pushed up for that?
(possibly a red-herring but its the only thing which sprang to mind - long throws CAN be lethal if employed right, BUT obviously if you aren't utilising them then the DC's shouldn't be coming up regardless ... oh and finall this is just 'conjecture' on my behalf I've had my head stuck in the iPhone game source for the last 9 months so can't say for sure that this is the case ... will try and check at some point for you though)
Flasch186
04-18-2010, 10:03 AM
I can see this as a possibility BUT I think that the engine needs to be looked at than. IF a long throw is going on, then the DC, should turn his head around and see that there is a massive breakaway opportunity and put himself in a better position (Decision rating?) so as not to give up the massive breakaway every time.
FWIW, in the game, I switched the team instructions to 'short' throws on both sides...they continue to throw the long throw and leave the massive freaky counter available.

That screenshot looks like a 'typical' long throw setup - a few teams irl have had long throw specialists and they cause havok against teams not used to them, I think 'Reading' we the last team to really use them effectively, they were as good as a corner in the right part of the field - but you need to set up the instructions right to make them effective, I'd recommend 'flick ons' and having fast strikers in the box waiting for them ..
The ball doesn't come in with the 'power' generally that a foot can give it - BUT in the right hands a long throw can be extremely effective and acurate ..
PS - With 'men back' make sure you set them as ALWAYS back and not just 'when needed' as I've found sometimes the AI gets its knickers in a twist in this regard ... mainly if one of the other 'back' players ends up taking the set piece ... hopefully we'll work it out and fix this in the next iteration.

Did you use the tactics wizard originally to create a custom tactic? If you've changed everything you can possibly think of manually in the tactics screen, I wonder if this could be a glitch/artifact left over from some setting in the tactics wizard that you're somehow unable to change back.

I get what youre saying about RL and the use of it but what Im saying is that I have both DC's set to 'Back' there is no 'Always Back' so when the two of them are 'lurking' outside the 18 and one of them goes, "hey Mo, watch that guy at the frickin' 50' there is no way that at least one of them shouldnt have the common sense to mark up. So Im not sure what the 'work on' is in that regard but they just need to add that bit of code that says, 'dont be stupid.' :)

Oh I agree don't get me wrong theres something which needs improving here - the setting I was meaning was 'back when needed' incidentally not 'always back' (basically be careful when using the 'when needed' one as thats relying on the CPU interpretation of things which might not be exactly what you wanted) ...

If previous versions, I had to set my fullbacks to be "Back" for them to be where you'd expect them. Center backs seem to always venture forward if you use manual tatics for throw-ins. Not sure if it's still that way in FM10.

what they said. I used to take the time to look at the proposed players before asking him to scout, in order to maybe not scout those that I knew beforehand would never be good enough, but I now simply click all the scout buttons and look at the scouting reports afterward. I also try to play a bit like henry296 in that I usually sign only players that my scout has ranked in some ways, or that are recommended to me through either the transfer rumor screen or the assistant manager team report screen.

I love this game. I"m still playing the same game from when it came out in October. It is now May 2032. My most recent season was great. I started my career at Grimsby got them promoted to league one, went to Swansea got them to the Premier League. I then moved to Everton, but was fired. The good news is they haven't been as good as when I was the coach. Also served two years as England coach and won the Euro Championship. After being fired, I landed to Aston Villa. In year two, finished second in the EPL and won the League Cup and FA Cup. In year three, I was in first place but Arsenal came calling. They nearly doubled my salary and a transfer budget 3X and wage budget nearly 2X so i couldn't refuse. They were in 11th place.
I only lose 1 league game the rest of the year, but lose early in the FA Cup and Euro Cup. I enter the last game of the season tied with Man City but behind on GD with Aston Villa 2 points back and Newcastle 3 points back. Man City ends up losing to West Ham and we dominate Charlton but concede two penalties and end up tied. I think I had the title, but Aston Villa wins 4-0 and wins the title on GD by 1.
Sine I maanged the first and second place teams I consider my self the champ since I easily earned more points than any other team.
It is great to see where today's players ended up. For example Rooney is managing Wolves and Lampard took my job at Aston Villa.
On to next year and hopefully I can win the title.

Worcester lives!
It’s been about a season and a half since I updated ya’ll on my team.
We finished strong (7th) in our second Premier season thanks to some great transfers. Ng Chi Cheung came over from Coventry for $9m and won the Young Player of the Year, scoring 16 goals as a 19 year old. We also went for an older, more established player in Tim Sparv, who we got for $3.5m from Murcia. He added a stabilizing effect to our group of youngsters. 21 year old Fons Barazite came from Ajax to man our DMC position and started 34 games for us in that position (7.01 rating).
These new additions had no problems enhancing our squad and we defied the critics with a top 10 finish in the Premier league. Even more amazing was our performance in the League Cup. We drew Premier squad Everton at home and dominated them, 3-0. Then we got Leeds in the 4th round but managed to beat them 1-0 even though we played part of the game with 10 men. It appeared our luck ran out when we got the mighty Wolves in the Semis at their house. But we played perhaps our best game of the season, matching the Wolves shot-for-shot and creating more clear opportunities in a 1-0 win.
So we had a home-and-home series against perennial powerhouse Aston Villa, who had finished 2nd in the Premier league the year before. Our 1-1 tie on their field showed we were no flukes and our 1-0 victory on our field secured our spot in the final. Awaiting us in the final were the defending champions, Manchester City. Man City is by far the most dominant team in the league and was a team we had never beaten. But anything can happen…and it did, when we stole a 2-1 victory with a goal in the last 5 minutes. This capped off an awesome season, and qualified us for international competition the following year…
Worcester is now an international squad!

Worcester Lives!
So now we had the pressure of expectations on us going into our 3rd year in the Premier division. We were expected to secure a top finish and play well in all the competitions. Financially, we were very well off and I had a $40m transfer budget to get the team ready to compete.
The off-seasons started off poorly. My prized DL, Stefan Fischer, made a fuss about wanting to move onward and upward. I hated to let him go. I had purchased him for $300k and he was one of my very best players. But the offer was too good to pass up - I sold him for an astounding $16.5m. Profit!!! That moved my transfer budget to over $50 and so it was time to spend….
…and I spent it like a drunken sailor. First off, I knew we needed some better defenders before the loss of Fischer. Now that need was compounded. So I brought in Petr Navratil for $11.5m from Stuttgart to man my defense. He was great, ending up with a 7.14 rating in 34 games. I added DC and DMC depth with Patrick Berghuis – a guy I once used on loan – for $2.8m. I brought in an out-of-favor DL from Dortmund, Gareth Crowe, for $3.1m to replace Fischer. That shored up my defense, so I moved on to other areas.
Next I needed a young guy to develop at MC and Arturo Ruiz fit the bill. I couldn’t believe the guy was available on a free. He was precisely the kind of diamond in the rough I look for – a young guy with great ratings who hasn’t played all that much (25 total games in this case). Getting him on a free turned out to be a major coup, as he finished with a 6.94 rating in 28 games and has developed quite well. He’s now worth $8.75m.
Another real gem was Soren Christensen, a striker from Manchester United. I knew I had to upgrade my offense and this kid fit the label of “wonderkid”. ManU was having major financial difficulties and they couldn’t turn down the $7m offer. Their pain is my gain. Christensen scored 13 goals for me in the Premiership but was even better in the Continental/International games, scoring 10 goals in 14 starts. His estimated value is now $13m.
Each of these 5 guys started in over 25 games for me. What was even more amazing was they blended into the squad very quickly. We came out of the gate absolutely on fire, winning 6 out of our first 7 games by a combined score of 17-6. We weren’t just winning, we were dominating.
That confidence carried over to our first international experience in the Champion’s Cup. We were the 4th team in our draw but got lucky with an easier group, with Celtic, At. Madrid and Leverkusen in our group. We shocked the world with a 2-0 victory over Celtic on their home pitch and tied both the other teams. We then beat Celtic 3-0 on our home pitch, tied Leverkusen 3-3 in a wild game and lost to At. Madrid. When all the points were tallied, we finished 2nd to move on to the next round.
In the first knockout stage, we drew heavyweights OM as our opponent but we were flying high and figured we could compete with anyone. We squeaked by them 1-0 on our pitch and then shocked them by scoring on their pitch midway in the 2nd match. Needless to say, we awoke the giant, who then scored twice in the next 10 minutes and absolutely blasted our goal with attempts in the final 5 minutes of the match. But somehow we held on for an aggregate 2-2 draw and moved on to the quarters by virtue of away goals. We lost to Man City in the quarters (3-2), but I have to consider our first international experience a rousing success.
Back to the Premier league, we continued to play really well. Our scoring punch of Cheung, Christensen and Connor Jones – not a one of them over 21 – piled points on the scoreboard. Navratil anchored our defense and we got some outstanding goalie play by young Dennis Hess. 3/4th of the way through the season, we found ourselves in the lead in the Premier division by 7 points.
But Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea weren’t going to give in that easily. We kept playing hard, but bad luck started to hit us. Christensen went down for 4 weeks. Ruiz went on a prolonged hiatus to play for his country. Barazite (2 games), Gerritsen (4 games) and Berghuis (2 games) all got suspended for red cards within the same month. Playing many games with 10 players turned wins into ties and ties into losses. Soon we found ourselves in a dead heat with Arsenal for the whole ball of wax, our 7 point lead having evaporated to nothing.
It all came down to our last game against Manchester United. If we win, we’d take the Premiership in just our 3rd season. If not, Arsenal would win. It wasn’t even close. Our team was not to be denied. Christensen came back from his injury to score first and Gerritsen atoned for his suspension by scoring. Manchester United was dominated 2-0.
Worchester wins the Premier Division in season 2019/2020!!!
On a side note, we also managed to defend our League Cup, again beating Man City in the final.
Coming into the next season, we’re really starting to be looked upon as a favorite. We’re at 8-1 odds to defend our crown, the board’s minimum expectation is qualification for the Continental matches and we’re now the 33rd richest team in the world. Only Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man U are richer Premiership clubs. Our transfer budget this year is a whopping $70m, we’re adding 4,000 more seats to the stadium and our cash position is currently $80m. Financially, we’re in amazing position.
So for this season, I’ve already brought in 18 year old DMC Osman Erdogan from Turkey ($4.5m), 18 year old DC Serpa from Brazil ($3.8), 22 year old DC Ingio Cia from Spain ($11.5m) and 18 year old Brazilian striker Josue ($3.2m). Only Cia is expected to contribute this year…the others are just reloading the team for the future. I still have $56m in transfer funds. Heck, the average age of my starters is still only 24. We’re still getting better. Worcester is now big time. Not bad for a team that was a bunch of part-timers a dozen years ago.
On a sadder note, my longtime favorite striker, Dylan McGeouch, was let go on a free this past off-season. He just didn’t quite have the ability to compete at this level. Still, it was sad, considering he started with us back in the Blue Square Premier league and scored 170 goals for us.

We just beat Wakefield in a friendly 13-0. We had 34 shots on goal...they had none. I guess we're turning into bullies.
I MUST write this as it's one of my best ever moments in my FM life.
Background: I'm coaching Murcia, in Spanish second division. We have a young good technical team, that lacks strong physical guys and veterans. At the start of the season, we are seen as a mid table team and it's my goal.
Midseason i signed a few players, mainly to cover the holes we have, and one of them was an strong classic target man from Spain but that was playing in England, named Franciso Sandaza.
During the season he didn't play a lot, just some minutes in the second half when i needed a physical presence, as the young and more technical and quick strikers we had, were playing nicely in our 4-2-3-1 tactic.
After a good run, stabilizing a new unbeaten record for the club, we were comfortably placed 3rd in the league for most of the season, against most odds.
Then at the end, we had some injuries and the 4th team (Hercules) was quickly approaching us, to the point that with two games to the end of the season, Hercules was at 3 points from us. To make things worse, in that two remaining games, we had to face the #1 placed team away and then #2 at home in the season ender.
The game vs the #1 team (Betis) was a disaster, they totally outplayed us and we lost 3-0. At same time, Hercules beat their rival and tied us on points for the #3 and last promotion spot, with us keeping the tie breaker lead because we beat them in our past matches.
So there it came, the last game of the season, against the #2 placed team, that is way better than us. That team is R.Sociedad, that is a top historical team in Spain, who has won the league a few times in the past, but that was demoted past season to second division. Of course it was just a matter of one season to get them back in first division as they have a lot of money and tradition.
I chose my standard 4-2-3-1 tactic, with my 3 quick and technical but young strikers on the top and wings. Loaded the other games widget to get the real time results, with the hope of seeing Hercules losing their game.
Game started with both teams exchanging some good chances in the first half, with us dominating more the ball, but with R.Sociedad giving us some scary moments with their quick and dangerous counter attacks. After the first half, Hercules was also tying his game at home 0-0, so we were still keeping the #3 league table spot (last spot for promotion to Spanish 1st division).
Then the second half started with bad news, Hercules scored against their rival, so we needed to win our game, a tie wouldn't be enough. I gave my men the instruction to attack more, and we created some good chances, but to make things even worse, R.Sociedad caught us in a counter attack and scored. Our dream was almost gone. We needed now to score twice vs the best team in the league.
So in a desperate move, i changed from the 4-2-3-1 to an all out attack 4-2-2-2, replacing my central attacking midfielder with the physical forward i talked about before, Francisco Sandaza. I set him as target man with a support duty, with the hope of he gaining some headers for my quick striker to score.
Minutes were passing, i set my tactic to overload and take high risks (most attacking one possible), but each chance we had, was followed by a quick counter by R.Sociedad. At same time, Hercules scored his second goal in their game, so the win was sure for them, forcing us to win too.
Then in the 88th minute, my best technical midfielder passed the ball to Sandaza at the front of the penalty area, with a defenseman between him and the keeper, he stopped the ball, used his body as shield, turned around and kicked a really hard shoot to the top corner of the goal, scoring the game tying one!!
I jumped out of my chair but still it was still one goal and we needed two, with 2 minutes to the end of the game... impossible task...
I sent everybody all out attack again and 4 minutes later, 2 into injury overtime, in a messy play with a lot of bodies around the ball close to the opponents area, Sandanza used his strength again to gain a good position, take the ball from between all legs and shoot another rocket to the opposite corner!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! i started to shout out loud and dance around, we finished #3 in the league, tied with Hercules but with the tie break in our favor, and earning the third and last spot to promote to Spanish La Liga 1st division!!!
If i could kiss Francisco Sandaza i would do it. He has been the perfect team player, not complaining besides his lack of playing time during the season and scoring twice just when we needing him and becoming our hero. He was not in my plans for next season, but now i can't just sell or cut him, he has a place in my heart forever and i'll try to make him retire in my team once his career is over.
I know it looks like those sport movies, too good to be true, so here are attached the end of the game screen, the league table and the press articles praising my coaching skills :D
Now i need to get back to my team front office as the team owner and the press want to kiss my ass for the huge accomplishment :D
Update: I was just told that my goalkeeper, another new signing for the season has earned the best Liga Adelante goalkeeper award and is now another fan favorite, giving me even more praise for the good signing.

Interesting situation in my current season. I will end up playing Newcastle 3 times in a week. We are meeting in the Champ League Semis and our regular match. We also play them 10 day earlier in the FA Cup Semi.
Also during this year, fought back from a 3-0 deficit afte leg 1 vs. AC Milan to win at home 4-0. How often do you see that in Continental competition?

Serie A - 2018 Table
1st - Juventus - 28 wins, 7 draws, 3 losses -- 91pts
Goals For: 72
Goals Against: 12
Yes. 12 goals against in 38 games. Best defense I've had in FM2010 by a longshot (maybe all-time too - I'd have to fire up FM09 and see when I get home).
Won the League. Won the Club World Championship. Won the Italian Super Cup.
Lost in the 1st Knockout Round of the Champions League to Real Madrid (3-1 on aggregate). Lost in the European Super Cup to Schalke. Lost in the Quarter Finals of the Italian Cup to Fiorentina.
Only 2 players in the Serie A Team of the Year First 11. Truly a team effort.

I wrote a little about it on Facebook somewhere but I never posted anything in here and now I need to brag about my Hatters. :)
Last reported, I had gotten Luton Town up from the Blue Square Premier to League 2. We started the season okay, couple wins, couple draws, sitting around 4th or 5th place, then boom it all fell into place. We just kept on winning. So much so that 17 games into the season, we're still undefeated with 14 wins and 3 draws, sitting in 1st place, 8 points clear of our closest opponent.
Media prediction was 12th place for us, I'd say we are crushign those expectations so far. And we're not simply winning games, we're regularly winning in decisive fashion, 3-0, 4-1, 5-1, with sometimes possession in the 65-70%. We really went to the extreme in our 17th game of the season last night however. Our morale is very high at the moment and we were playing Macclesfield, currently sitting dead last in the league table. I went in telling the guys I expected them to win this game and was a bit nervous at the start of the game because we used to play down to our opponents' level. Nervous without reason in that one though as we went up by one after 2 minutes, by 2 after 5 and were ahead 4-0 after only 18 minutes. We went on to win it 8-0 with our first 8 shots all on target and all converted into goals. I've never seen that before. Great passing, as if guys all knew where their target was going to run to so that their pass would be perfect. Joy to watch...
Let's hope it continues. :)

If anything, I've never found the game too easy. I pretty much play to thrive on unnatural situations, but...if I'm playing straight, there's no way that I find it too easy. But then, I'm not immersed in that game like baseball so maybe that's why.

yeah, i reached my 'well, what now?' point with the game this weekend. you can only win the champions league so many times in a row before it's, meh.
i had 3 scouts (2 roaming 1 for opponents) and that was my house rule. i think if i ever go back to it i'll limit the number of coaches because it's too easy to cultivate players.
the mls presents a nice challenge due to the budgets and salary cap. toronto in the mls even more so due to the requirement of domestic players for international competitions.

They can't be in the game at the start because SI only had the rights for the 2009 season, not 2010.
But Philadelphia is in the database, with it's stadium and uniforms set, and some correct players on the roster (including the guys from the most recent draft), so it's not too much work to add them into a user created USA league should you wish to do that. By doing this you lose a bunch of the MLS specific rules, which may or may not seem like a bad thing to you.

Anyone else have any interesting events from a long career? I just finished the 2025-26 season and saw Liverpool finish 19th and get relegated. They won the FA Cup in 2013 and the League Cup in 2013 and 2014, but that's been the extent of their silverware. Rafa Benitez got the axe in 2018 and the managerial merry go round began. Billy Davies lasted eight months, Paul Jewell came in for a couple years, Noel Blake had a two year run, Sami Khedira lasted eight weeks, Eusebio for eight months, Leroy Rosenior for a year and finally Alan Shearer in 2024. Shearer had a season and a half before Derek McInnes guided the club to a relegation that can pretty much be pinned on Shearer. Liverpool's finances are secure, but the club is still 25 million pounds in debt.
Meanwhile, Man City have begun to dominate the Prem winning six titles in a row after Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal shared the titles from 2010-2020. From November of 2024 to December of 2025 City didn't lose a game going 43 unbeaten. At the opposite end of the table, Cardiff had by far the worst Premier League season in 2025-26. They managed 8 draws for their 8 points in losing 30 games. They scored only 14 goals all season and gave up 85 for a goal differential of -71.
In 2023, Dundee United became the first team other than Rangers or Celtic to win the Scottish Premier League since Aberdeen in '85 (Sir Alex managed that team if my memory serves). Beating Rangers and Celtic has to be one of the biggest challenges in the game.
Real Madrid shattered the world record transfer fee by paying 102 million pounds for an Italian newgen named Francesco Luciani in 2021. I guess that was a drop in the bucket for a team who is almost twice as rich as second place Barcelona. Madrid and Barcelona have split the Spanish league title every year except for two seasons when Atletico Madrid went back to back.
The Champions League has gone to Real Madrid 4 times, Olympique Lyonnais 3 times, and Juventus and Atletico Madrid twice. The most unlikely winner was Palermo in 2015.
As far as notable retired players goes, Wayne Rooney is now managing Wolves, Fernando Torres manages Sporting Lisbon, Steven Gerrard coaches youngsters at Huddersfield, Frank Lampard has been out of work for the last year after getting sacked by Blackburn and John Terry is in the same position after getting sacked by Notts Co. in 2025. Rio Ferdinand has been managing Preston North End since 2018. Lionel Messi is just starting his managerial career after a stellar career that included 7 world player of the year awards.
This career might be coming to an end. I'm starting to get crash dumps every few games or the match goes into a slide show. I have to go into the AppData folder too often to empty the FM 2010 folder's cache. It's starting to get annoying.

I sure had the game kick me in the pants tonight. I'm currently playing Southend in my first year in the Championship. I'm supposed to bravely fight relegation and currently 20th. I'm playing at home against Birmingham who are first. The game is 0-0 about half way through the second half when my young striker scores on a nice pass from the midfield. The goal is disallowed because he was ruled offsides. About ten minutes after that Birmingham scores on a carbon copy of my disallowed goal, but their's stands. Needless to say I was rather heated.

FM is like frigging crack. It's not that I play a whole lot as most of my evenings are taken with some activity or another, but I always need my little dose and when 10pm rolls around and I have not fired up the game to at least play a game, I start feeling frustrated.
Last evening was more of the same. Fird up the game at about 10:30, managing a nice 3-0 league win before facing the question of "do I want to play another game?" at about 3 minutes to 11. I felt tired and wanted to go to bed but that game was our 4th round FA Cup replay against Championship side Swansea. We had fought back from a one goal deficit in the first game, drawing it 1-1 at home. Now this was away and the media, and our fans, were predicting a bad loss for us. Somehow I wanted to prove them wrong. We fought hard and then scored in the 70th minute or so. Dang, I started believing we could do it, but didn't believe for long as they tied the game only 5 minutes later.
We were fitter than them so I told the guys to up the tempo and we started having scoring chances. To extra-time we went and we kept attacking, without luck, until they apparently scored in the 118th minute. My heart sank... then rose! NO GOOD!!! GUY WAS OFFSIDE!!!
We played out the last couple minutes and went on to penalty kicks where we sucked tremendously for our first three kicks, then they sucked and we got back in only for it to be decided on the 5th kick. We lose, yet we never backed down. We're nowhere near having enough talent to challenge with Championship teams, but we held our own.

Quick story on my Alfreton campaign.
I get a number of bargain basement pick ups through the year and build a stellar backline. My strikers are tempermental, but good when they are on. MCs are good, but limited in what they do. The wingers are fast, but lack the technical skills.
Anyway, we start off on a hot streak and go to the top of the table. But injuries begin to plague us in December and we struggle through most of the rest of the year. We finish third in the BSN, one point behind the champions.
We go into the playoff against Corby who we have lost to once, and tied twice, both times on late goals. The first game, we draw 2-2. We go into the second game, we get an early goal from a penalty drawn by our star striker Paul Clayton. Corby scores a goal at the end of the half to draw even. Early in the second half, they score. Then at the 72 minute mark, they score.
I bring in my captain MC who is coming off of an injury and was just allowed to play the day before. I bring in my other aging 35 year old MC as a deep playmaker. We get back on the sheet with a goal at the 86 minute mark on a through ball to our stud ST from the aging MC. Corby goes into a defensive mode, and I figure we might as well go for broke, we go into overload and more expressive. I also turn on the press. There are 2 minutes of extra time, we score at the 91st minute to come even on a cross from our captain who got the ball ahead in the corner to our mercurial ST (guy had 19 goals for us, he may have scored in 7 games) who heads it in!
We go into extra time, everyone is gassed because we're playing in rain. My wingers who lacked technique have stamina and speed in abundance and run Corby off the pitch scoring 4 goals in extra time!
We then secure promotion by beating Fleetwood 3-1 with their only goal being an own goal at the 86 minute mark.

Can anyone beat this? After three competitive matches I was fired from the Brazil job. End of season six I took over in the Copa America quarter final and lost to Argentina 1-2. Then in early season 7 I beat Chile 2-0 in WCQ and then lost to Argentina 0-1 in a WCQ. Two matches into qualifying I got the axe.

I'm sort of confused on something regarding simming and choosing which nations you want. I chose England yet it seems like it plays out the major cups across the globe. Is it simming these results?
Same goes for the teams that make the Champions League. Is it simming all those leagues in the background or what is it using to determine who gets in from these other nations I didn't choose?

It does a fast-sim for the games not in the areas you've selected as playable. I think it's a much simpler version of a sim, which doesn't tax your processor nearly as much. But yes, all areas are still simmed at some level.

My first sacking... I am stunned. I took Alfretown from a podunk BSN side, finished second in the BSN, won promotion, finished mid-table in the BSP, when we were picked to finish dead last, were picked as relegation candidates this season, but were running second with a 20-10-4 record with a +39 goal differential (Rushden was an insane 25-9-0!). We have given up a total of 18 goals on the season.
The only thing I can figure out, is early in the season I rejected their tender to extend my contract. I figured they would renegotiate, but they opted not to. The only other thing was I was getting ready to transfer a certain favored son of the club, Ben Hunt who was under-performing all season.
EDIT: I reapplied for the position, but I like the fact that my two assistant coaches walked out as well in hopes of following me to my next gig. Nice touch there.

They did get a hugely easy path. Then again, they scored a ton of goals. I'll look it up when I get home.
I was really surprised to see Brazil fall so early and hard. I have a bunch of top-class Brazillians in my side, and in the 2014 WC they lost to Argentina in the Finals in an absolute stormer. I think the final score was like 7-6 in extra time or something.
France doesn't surprise me that much - they always have class youngsters at places like OM and Bordeaux.
Mexico also doesn't really surprise me - they have a lot of talent - I actually managed them earlier in my game and had them playing really well with a sort of "traditional Mexican" style of wide-open "run run run" football, and they have a 20 year-old wonderkid striker (who I just signed for Juve for $32.5m) plus all of the guys who are in their early 20's right now.

Playing as the English National Team in 2018, I have this 29 year old AMC who has played a great world cup for me (In the US). He's scored 4 goals and we just polished off Germany in the round of 16. His name is Francesco Martinelli. He has dual citizenship for both Italy and England, but doesn't speak a word of English, just Italian and Russian. He only has 8 total caps and 5 goals so far, but he's been a godsend for me. I guess he was tired of waiting around for Italy and decided to come play for, what I would assume is his mother's national team.

I like to mess with the database before starting my games to make the US produce as many good youngsters as the top countries. Basically I raise the nation's reputation, game importance, and give clubs in the top two divisions (using a custom setup) good training facilities and youth academies.

Couple questions for those of you who have gotten to play future World Cups.
1) How are host cities determined in future tournaments? Is it random or hard-coded in?
2) Do the number of teams per continent change ever? I know it gets tweaked based on the strength of the teams in that continent but unsure if FM adjusts.
3) Do you guys see the national powers shift over the years dramatically? My only deep sim which was just done to see how things played out in certain leagues saw Malta getting into the knockout stage of the WC in 2018 (they won their group). I didn't look that deep into international competitions, but wondering if random countries start taking over for some of the conventional powers.

I've bought FM one time before, but never really sunk my teeth into it. I bought this year's, partially because of the WC coming up.
I've come close to getting hooked, even though I'm god awful at this point. I've waded through some of this thread and poked around on some of the forums, but there is just so much info out there it can be a bit overwhelming. I'm hoping the collective wisdom here can help me distill some of my n00bish questions.
I picked Oldham Athletic in Coca Cola League 1. I liked their jerseys. Turns out they have almost no transfer balance. I've been adding players through loans, because it seems like free or low cost outright transfers is like sorting through a needle in a haystack. Is this a promising strategy? How do you manage the various loan end dates? Are they typically extendable?
I have 38 players on my Squad. Is this too many? What is typical?
I'm still not exactly sure what attributes I'm looking for. I mean, I can get basics, but it's not as intuitive to me like FOF is. Any tips?
In looking at some of the first day guides, it seems a lot of people change their staffs, almost wholesale. I have no idea what to look for in staff members. Help.
How much of a boost do I get in playing guys with high morale versus a more talented player?
I have a couple of young players on my U18 squad who look promising. When do you typically bring these guys up?
What all do you do between games to tweak your team? How much do you interact with your players?
I haven't adjusted training schedules at all--seems daunting. I can't figure out how to ask my assistant to do it.
I'm sure I'll come up with more questions.

it's been a while since i played but...
I've been adding players through loans, because it seems like free or low cost outright transfers is like sorting through a needle in a haystack. Is this a promising strategy?
yep. you can play that way through the championship. load up on domestics then go around to spain/italy and start kissing managers butts. there's no limit on non-domestic loaners. also, request a parent team from your board. it's free money and you'll get first crack at their loaners.
still not exactly sure what attributes I'm looking for. I mean, I can get basics, but it's not as intuitive to me like FOF is. Any tips?
it's pretty intuitive. fwd's=dribbling shooting, mids=passing, backs=tackling,marking
look for young physical freaks on the cheap and build them up.
How do you manage the various loan end dates? Are they typically extendable?
depends on how many long terms you have. doesn't matter. when one ends bring in another. sort by player value. best players=most valuable
I have 38 players on my Squad. Is this too many? What is typical?
i'd say yes. sell off anybody of value. you def. wanna make as much money as possible. i keep it bare bones. 18-22 w/loaners until the premiereship.
I have no idea what to look for in staff members.
simple way is to search by reputation. i think the big 3 are motivation/determination/discipline. get the best coaches you can.
How much of a boost do I get in playing guys with high morale versus a more talented player?
depends. but up until the premiere league i'd just go with the most talented.
I have a couple of young players on my U18 squad who look promising. When do you typically bring these guys up?
17. some of them get spooked and their ratings drop.
What all do you do between games to tweak your team? How much do you interact with your players?
listen to the backroom advice. an ass man with good player management will set the right course.
during long layoffs and during the pre-season i like to schedule quite a few easy games to boost morale.
I haven't adjusted training schedules at all--seems daunting. I can't figure out how to ask my assistant to do it.
a few pages back here (or you can google it) are darkstar's optimized training schedules. upload those and you'll be good.

I have 38 players on my Squad. Is this too many? What is typical?
Does this include senior + reserves only, or is your youth team included? I hope the latter. With senior and reserve matches, you are only going to be able to get regular matches for about 22-23 senior players, depending on injuries. If you have some quality youth players who deserve some time with your reserve side, that number goes down. Any senior player in excess of that is just eating up salary you could spend on better players.
Salary management is one of the most important parts of this game. If a guy is earning a top 11 salary, he'd better be a starter. If not, out he goes.
I'm still not exactly sure what attributes I'm looking for. I mean, I can get basics, but it's not as intuitive to me like FOF is. Any tips?
Assuming that you have set tactics and are comfortable with them: go to the tactics screen and look at the tactics for each individual player. You'll see that, for each player, you can set the position and whether you want them to attack, support or defend. You'll also notice that attributes are highlighted, depending on what you select. Those are the key attributes for a player playing that style at that position.
In looking at some of the first day guides, it seems a lot of people change their staffs, almost wholesale. I have no idea what to look for in staff members. Help.
Your coaching staff does a couple of things -- provides you advice and conducts training. Your assman is most important for the former, since he can give you advice during a match that can be pretty valuable. Man management and tactics are key there (apologies if I get the skill names wrong).
Your assman and coaches all provide training for your players, and you do best there with minimizing overlap. At CC L1, I think you generally have the budget for a fitness coach. So look for one coach with a high fitness rating and set him to train just strength and fitness. You can turn that off for all your other coaches, thus making them more efficient. Motivation and determination are important for staff that focuses on training.
I haven't adjusted training schedules at all--seems daunting. I can't figure out how to ask my assistant to do it.
This daunts me as well, and it is what I still go to the FM forums to learn more about. One thing that helps to orient yourself is to learn what each category actually trains. I think you can hover the cursor over the category and it gives you a list of attributes it affects. Once you learn what you want from each position, you can, at the very least, make up a basic schedule for each position that emphasizes those skills.

I got a little bored managing an Aussie team due to the lack of relegation/promotion, so I started playing with a 2nd division Japanese squad. We've been performing "above expectations" though were still ranked 15 out of 18, but last night we played a recently-relegated team who had some freakishly good odds at beating the snot out of us, and won 4-1! I couldn't believe it, I was fist-pumping and everything... :D
We were helped by one of their defenders picking up a red card for his second hard foul just before half time, but we were already up 2-1 at that stage. After a 2-0 win the game before (following a very long streak of no wins, a few draws, and lots of losses), it's amazing seeing what the boosted confidence does to our attack.
I'm also starting to finally get a better grasp on tactics, which is making the game more enjoyable too. With the Aussie team I was running a pretty conservative 4-4-2, so I brought that in again here with poor results. We brought in an Aussie AMF/F to play striker, but in the months we had to wait before his contract finished in Australia we had a young striker really start performing well for us, so I went with what I guess would be called a 4-3-1-2 attack, playing with a high and very rigid defensive line and always on "attacking", and I think that is better suited for a league like this. I've gone from not being able to put the ball into the net, to having a solid attack, and the cash that I've spent on shoring up my defenders has so far minimized the risks in playing like this.
Once again, can you guys pretty please make a basketball sim? :D

I'm having one of those FM stretches where you want to put your fist through the screen. My Southport side has dropped 5 straight and 7 of 9 after a very good start that had us 2nd in the BSN. Team confidence and morale is shot. Even the penalty shots aren't going in.
One thing I realized is that I picked the wrong captain at the start of the season. I chose a guy with slightly less influence and a volatile personality but that I expected to start ahead of another, more balanced guy, I expected to be on the bench. Has anyone tried switching captains mid-season? Will I have to get rid of the guy who has the armband now?

BTW, some of the folks over on Something Awful found a psuedo-exploit that has the potential to be funny (and to seriously unbalance the game world).
When you buy players with a down payment and a long term payment, only the down payment comes out of your transfer fund.. so if you pay 1 million up front and 10 million over 48 months, your available transfer funds only go down by the one million.
I believe one of the SA folks took man city, and managed to buy SIX HUNDRED MILLION pounds of players. The unbalanced side was the fact that their sugar daddy chairman had to inject like thirty million pounds quarterly to keep the team afloat.

OK, next question...
I am affiliated with Man City, and they want to loan me a super stud guy for free to get him experience. But, the transfer gets canceled because I have more than 4 domestic loaners (maybe under 23) for the season. Fair enough.
A few questions from this...I can't figure out how to bring up a summary screen that shows which of my players are loaned and which aren't. Does this exist?
How do I tell the difference between a long term loan and a short term?
Can I cancel one of my other loans to bring this guy in, or am I stuck for the year?
SirFozzie
06-06-2010, 10:24 AM
Short term loan, 3 months or less. Long Term Loan, 3 months or more. You've filled your maximum quota of long term loans for the year (for players of that age).
Players who are on loan at your squad will show up in a different color on your squadsheet (blue).
Make an offer to loan the guy for three months.. at least you'll get something out of him :D

2011/2012 - Won the BSP on the last day of the regular season, had a 9 point lead with 8 games to go and we frittered it away. We also won the FA Trophy this year. Had an amazing team that was dominant early in the season, had atrocious injuries to key positions late that caused us to stumble.
2012/13 - After bouncing around the top of League 2 all season, we again sneak into the playoffs as the #4 team in the table. (13 points separated 1st and 7th place, 18 between 1st and 8th) We then grunt out a win in the first leg of the playoffs 1:0 on aggregate. Then dominate the final 4-1. Now we're in league 1, and I think we're going to get rolled.

Crap, my point to the above was that in the playoffs, I would tell the team to do it for the fans!, especially if they seemed lethargic. I would also be relatively hard on some players, but I also have a relatively professional squad so they actually responded well to things like that, especially if I subbed out another player playing at a similar level.

A few questions after spending some time going through my first preseason and watching my first couple friendlies.
I took over Woking in the Blue Square South to try to build them up.
1) Holy crap the 3D match engine is AMAZING. I watched about 70 minutes of my first two friendlies, I'm sure that will get old at some point but for now its awesome. That wasn't really a question was it? :D
2) How much of your matches do you generally watch? It seems like even with "extensive" highlights or whatever that second option is below watching the full match, I'll miss a lot of buildup and a lot of things that might make me notice something about one of my guys, especially when it comes to midfield play. any recommendations or habits you guys follow when it comes to watching matches to try to improve your tactics?
3) I want to experiment a bunch with the player roles, I'm in a basic 4-4-2 right now and see that one of my fowards is an "advanced forward" while the other is a "deep lying forward" in a support duty... I can see myself wanting to play with those roles a ton in each position. Will I screw up my team's cohesion and chemistry if I stay in a 4-4-2 but have different players try out different roles to learn how they all work?
4) With a low level team like Woking, I have no transfer budget and have been looking at loans. I already have one long term loan at striker at the start of the game and I just took a second long term loan at keeper (all my keepers are prospects with very very little current skill). So those guys will be with me all season... I assume I want to try to use all my short term loans too to keep as much talent on the team as possible? How much with that screw with chemistry and such? So far it seems that I can very easily bring in short term loaners that are better than my current starters at pretty much every position, but if I have a few rotating in and out all year will it do more harm than good?
5) Assistant and coaches... what are the key attributes I want in these guys at a low level squad where I can't afford guys who are good at everything?
Thanks!

2) I have read over on the FM board that it is highly recommended to watch as much of your teams matches in entirety as FM now is alot more intuitve as far as learning how your team is performing on the pitch via the match engine as opposed to the past.

Hey, on a side note. I've still been working off an old patch. Since my game is pretty mature now and it's been decent enough, I wasn't terribly concerned.
Last I heard (eons ago), the latest patch caused some occaisonal weirdness in regards to existing games. Anyone remember if this is still the case, or am I working on (very likely) outdated information?

I don't even know how to describe this game I just had. I'm playing as Crystal Palace and am facing Man City in the League Cup Semi's. I lost the first leg 3-0 after being dominated for most of the game but held fast with a stellar defense. They scored 3 goals in the last 15 minutes to destroy my team. I'm fighting for Europe in the EPL right now so going into the second leg, I decided to rest most of my star offensive players due to having some young players. Hell, I played one guy who hadn't played a game all year for me. Between this leg and the previous leg, I also lost to Man City, 1-0 and really was just going throw this game to City without much of a fight. In the EPL, Man City is a disappointing 13th place so far, but they have a talented team, including the English National Team Keeper, who at 32, already has 132 caps.
Started the game with a quick goal from my second strike in the 8th minute. 7 minutes later, a depth striker I picked up on transfer scored the second goal for me. 11 minutes after that, a defender knocks in a pretty goal and I sit with a 3-0 lead after 26 minutes. In the 40th minute, Bentley (my second striker) knocks in his second goal of the game and I suddenly find myself with a 4-3 aggregate lead at the half. I keep the talk simple at halftime and tell them that I'm pleased and a minute into the second half, Bentley scores his third goal of the game for a hat trick! The score is now 5-3 and I'm beside myself. Not that I care about the cup, just the result and how it's playing out! In the 76th minute, Bentley kicks in his 4th goal of the game and I finish the game with a 6-0 and move to the finals. Im completely mystified on how I won this game vs a team who probably has more talent then my team does. Bentley finishes with a 9.8 match rating for me.

Yah, the last version of FM I played (and very briefly at that), the players all looked like chess pieces. Big improvement.
2) How much of your matches do you generally watch? I watch the entire game, 3 notches down from the top speed. Takes about 35-40mins a game I'd say. Much prefer it this way. The end of game ratings don't mean so much to me anymore, as I can visually see which guys are sucking it up out there. Sometimes I'm surprised when a guy gets a 6.7 or something, despite him seemingly passing the ball straight to the other team 90% of the time he touches it.
5) Assistant and coaches... what are the key attributes I want in these guys at a low level squad where I can't afford guys who are good at everything?
With a smaller team I focused on fitness to try and minimize the time of the field my crappy reserves and u18s are getting. I'm far from an expert though, so maybe that's the wrong approach. :)

Even the striker can focus on physical stats mainly, just look for acceleration + pace over 15 and decent other attributes and you've got a star striker in Blue Square.
My main advice for lower league teams is to find players who are rated 2 league levels above yours (e.g you're in Blue Square Premier, look for players your scout thinks they'll have the potential to be decent players in L1 one day, or exceptional L2.).
This is fairly easy to do until reaching the championship, there it's another story.

When you created your manager, did you select former international as your previous experience? When I click on my profile, I have 33 caps and 12 goals to my credit. That can help get you started.
But if league 1 is your lowest level selected, you'll get a job when it opens at that level

I too have an interest in maybe getting FM with the WC coming uo and also am wondering if anyone who knows the game can answer these questions as well as give a brief opinion on the international side of play and how it is if a person just focused on that area and not so much on managing a club.
I ran some sims and I think I have the answers to my own questions.
1) It seems like future host sites for the World Cup is random. There is obviously some logic to ensure that big countries get it and it looks like they do switch continents. But running it a few times for 20+ years I saw different host sites. Mexico seemed to get it a lot in my sims and South Africa got one in 2034 in one. Russia and China also got the host duty later on.
2) I can't really figure out the bids without looking really deep into it. There is logic to handle host cities. For instance, in the next WC, Africa only gets 5 bids. But CONCACAF still has the 3.5 bids when Mexico hosts one of the years.
3) The traditional powers remain strong throughout. The U.S. tumbled to 42nd in the World Rankings by 2043, although they won the World Cup in 2026 and came in 3rd in 2030. They won the Confederations Cup in 2013.
Some other interesting things on the international scale in my big sim to 2043.
- Ireland won the World Cup in 2034.
- Canada made a run to the Quarterfinals in 2030 and made multiple appearances in the World Cup during that time.
- Israel made the quarterfinals in 2026.
- Jamaica made the knockout stage in 2022.
- Iceland made the knockout stage in 2042.
- Wales (2014), DR Congo (2026), Northern Ireland (2026), UAE (2030, 2038) all had trips to the Cup.
I haven't noticed too many odd things in domestic play in the big sim. Fulham has fallen from the Premier League all the way down to Blue Square Premier (they were relegated farther for a year too). Tranmere almost won back to back FA Cups.
Liverpool won the Premier League 24 times in a row (2018/19-2041/42) and captured 8 Champions League titles.

2014 - Brazil
2018 - Italy
2022 - Mexico
2026 - Australia
2030 - Germany
2034 - Brazil
As for who has won it, Italy, Spain, England, Germany and Mexico x3. Runners up include Italy, England, Spain, Argentina, and Germany. 3rd place teams include Croatia, USA, Chile, Italy, Mexico

2010 - Host: South Africa - Winner: Germany - Runner Up: England
2014 - Host: Brazil - Winner: Argentina - Runner Up: England
2018 - Host: Spain - Winner: Argentina - Runner Up: England
2022 - Host: USA - Winner: Italy - Runner Up: England
2026 - Host: Australia - Winner: Mexico - Runner Up: Argentina

The only job that remains open and accepts me as a manager is with Wrexham who are festering at 20th in the BSP after 11 played. Why are they so low, you ask? They have 8 players with long-term injuries. Most of their squad is out of commission--in fact, almost their full starting 11 is out if you count minor injuries, suspensions, and international call-ups.
This will be fun. Next year the team should be pretty damn good, though.

I was unable to secure a stadium expansion and the board asked me to drop the issue.
They just came to me and told me that they were building a new stadium at the tune of 405 million dollars and taking a loan out for the whole cost. It's being named after a legend of Crystal Palace and will be called Burton Arena, after the famed Crystal Palace midfielder, who made over 650 appearances from 2014-2027. Needless to say, he was my first cut when I took over the team in 2027 and he didn't play again and now he's a scout at Watford. Gonna let him come back as a bad scout for some fame time

Looks like I may get San Marino promoted out of C2/B in my first season there. I think I've abandoned my dynasty so that I can play at a faster pace as I've gone back to the savegame.
Journeyman striker Edwin Congo of Colombia has absolutely lit the league on fire. 2nd to last game before the playoffs...he just put 5 goals past Gubbio and had a perfect 10.0 rating.
And that's in a 4-2-2-1 formation.
His primary backup (and sometimes partner when I go to a 2 striker set), Oscar Murillo, has 17 goals in 25 games (14 starts, 11 subs).

I'm using that formation and right now have 60 goals in 21 games in the EPL with a +50 goal difference.

Why does he even need the goalkeeper? The other team cant shoot the ball if your team is busy scoring 12 goals :p
I prefer not to think of the guy in the different coloured shirt merely as a "goalkeeper". I like him to make the save (assuming the other team is able to advance beyond my mid-fielder and sole defender), then dribble the ball the length of the field and look to either take a shot himself or, failing that, get the 4 strikers involved.
An AMG, if you will.

Well they actually have a role similar to that under tactics for keepers, just need an eccentric dribbler and your good to go!

Had a tough loss last night. Alfreton, leading League 1 in our second season there, draws Southhampton who is in the EPL in the second round of the League Cup. We go up 1-0 and 2-1 before falling behind 3-2 late in the game. We tie it up 3-3, and go into extra time. In ET, we give up 3 goals (we just ran out of gas) and lose 6-3. Needless to say, it was like popping a balloon as our confidence was shattered and we have had issues since with our form.

Extra files supplement the game, not replace existing files. You can add up to 82 extra files IIRC.

Where's the best place to buy this these days? I haven't bought in a couple of versions, and of course watching the world cup gave me a hankering.

I like Steam...but check D2D for a lower price in case the special is still on.

BTW, I got my first "Pre-order FM2011 today!" email.. they're offering it for 25 pounds, which is 15 off the usual price (I say usual price, because SI has not yet announced when/how much/IF FM 2011 is out)

An easy tactic to work with is 4 defenders, 1 DMC, 2 MC, 1 AMC, and 2 ST. Work from there on building your tactics
I love the 4:4:2 diamond, substituting a ML and a MR for the 2 MCs--it's a bit less sturdy defensively, but it opens up all sorts of possibility for attack.
Playing lower-level teams, I've decided that one of the huge advantages of FM over most other text sims is that finances truly do matter. Even 6 or 8 seasons into a game, I cannot just spend my way to success--I've got to weigh every personnel decision carefully in terms of its financial implications.

That stinks, missed the special.
I have no idea how to make corners have any chance of succeeding (I'm in the BSP at the moment, to give you an idea of the player skill-level). I have my team set to play short on all corners and I designated a specific player to come short and take it, but everyone always clusters on the far post and the corner-taker just kicks the ball right to the defensemen on the near post EVERY TIME, regardless of my orders to kick it short and my individual orders to have someone standing at the near post. How do you make your team take credible corners?

I just recently picked up a new keeper with an eccentricity of 20. I keep waiting for him to do something superstupidawesome.

Everywhere I've checked the game is $39.99, and on Amazon, the only version is a version from someone in Thailand, and I sure as hell don't trust that. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll put it on special again before the Cup is over.

the email was from sortitoutsi, the site is something I hadn't heard of before, a site called zavvi:

(seriously, I don't mind purchasing from Amazon or Steam, now that the game is coming out at the same time as overseas)

In my latest FM game, I took over at Celtic in 2015 (simmed up till then to check out my latest iteration of the American Premier League).. basically, it was easy mode, as Rangers fell back and no one else in the Scottish Premier League could catch me, so I was winning leagues and cups back to back to back..
well, after pulling off the Quad in 2022 (Scottish League Cup and FA Cup, League, and Champions League) I resigned, and after playing for a bit in international management, took the first job that was offered me, at Real Madrid (I had applied for a couple lesser jobs, but apparently they felt I was going to duff them over at the first opportunity, so didn't get the job).
But looking back at Celtic in 2024, I saw something that made me laugh.
Scotland's first choice Goal Keeper is Silva, a Spanish/Brazillian import, who didn't make either of his home nationality's pools, so after playing for me at Celtic for five years, he grabbed Scottish Nationality just in time for the 2022 World Cup, and immediately was slotted into the starting GK.
Something similar for the backup GK, a German import named Alexander Wachter.. while he's the second choice at GK, the fact that I forgot to remove the German fake team meant he wasn't going to play for Germany, and he too grabbed Scottish Nationality and he's both the #2 for Celtic and Scotland.
The third choice GK is Lee Watt.. born and raised in Scotland, and yes, he ALSO plays for Scotland (came through their youth system in 2016, IE, one year after I took over). He is the #3 for both Scotland and Celtic.. which I find funny.. he gets like 10 games tops a year (which he's really not happy about), but he is that talented.
I can just see the other SPL teams complaining that Celtic hogs all the good keepers :)

I occasionally get things like that to happen to me Fozzie. But I also feel bad that they are being frozen out of some games so I try to trade them away. If they are good, out of the league :)

The 4-1-2-1-2 is a solid formation to use for beginners.
I have since moved the DM to MC, and the AM to ST, having great success with a 4-3-3 that I personally tweak depending on my players.

I'm strictly a 4-3-3 guy. Love the attacking style. I retrain any young midfielders into the MC position as soon as I get them. No midfielders on the wings at all.

Me, I'm greedy. I don't share well. ;)
and being at a club like Celtic means that I find GOOD young players, and buy them, but two years down the road, Real Madrid and Man Yoo start eyeing your players, and they're gone.
The funny thing in this game, in 2018 I found a great Brazillian Striker, named Wesley, playing at a Swiss club. I bought him at age 19 for 13.5 Million pounds, and he slotted in well. How well? 52 games, 60 goals over two and a half seasons
So Everton starts eyeing him, and I'm frantically trying to get him to sign a five year deal to make sure I keep him for a while, and he seems amenable, then the disaster day.
Everton offers 33 million pounds for him, and with an offer made, he no longer wants to renew his contract. With a year and a half left, I decide to accept the offer, because he made it clear he wasn't going to stay.. (figuring I can find someone almost as good for a LOT less then 33 million). I don't ask for next transfer profit, because hell, how many players are sold for more then 33 million?
I console myself by saying that I made a huge profit on him.. a year and a half later, Celtic are playing Real Madrid in the Champions League, and I see a familiar name.. Wesley.. I've kinda lost contact with him, so I go over to see how he's done since he left Celtic (and how he ended up with Real).
Then I start swearing. Everton had him for a year and a half (38 games, 26 goals), and Real Madrid had made a 75 Million Pound transfer for him!
So not only had Everton swooped in and stole my best player from me.. they made 42 million pounds worth of profit on the whole thing.

I know this question has been asked before but I don't want to look through all these pages...I love sports text sims. I don't especially care for soccer but every now and then I think about giving this game a try. I don't know much about soccer and nothing about how leagues are set up (friendlies, loaning players, etc). Is there a place that would help me to understand this in a relatively short time?

This is the reason I always try to work my way up to the top club instead of sticking with a mid-tier club. Speaking of which, I keep meaning to pull the trigger on buying this version and haven't done so. I think it's time to finally dive in this weekend. :)

I personally hate wingers. :) (or hate figuring out tactics with a formation that uses wingers)
Using the Tactics Wizard, I currently have a 4-3-3 with my back flat all on defensive mentality. My midfield consists of a basic MC on defensive, and the MCl and MCr on attack. I have a Poacher as the STl, Deep-Lying Forward on support at STc, and an Advanced Forward as STr. I've tweaked mentalities in order to give me the kind of spacing I want.
The formation is set on a Control tactic with Pace tweaked to slow, and width to wide.
It's beautiful relentless football aimed at just finding the spaces in between defenses in order to launch attacks.

I do so heart my 4-3-3 setup. I sometimes call it the "give the fullbacks a heart attack" formation.

I play a narrow 4-1(DM)-2(MC)-3 formation. Combined with some of the other stuff I play, it just bags tons of goals
