I can only imagine how difficult it must be to work with certain actors - case in point:

Warning - he drops a ton of f-bombs, so NSFW (without headphones)

Yep. Sure sounds like the same guy that physically assaulted his sister and mother. What a prick.

That is awesome. What a douche.
(Honestly, the way he goes on and on and on, getting increasingly angry and belaboring the same points just to hear himself shout reminds me strongly of the way my wife explodes when she's having a manic episode.)

What I find amusing is how no one ever says anything during these episodes.
You're not going to see a director or anyone step in. Just let the guy get it out of his system and move on.
From what I heard it was the Director of Photography he was yelling at, and a guy that has been around for a long time. I doubt he was surprised by it. I imagine this happens quit frequently.
Really not surprised it's Bale either. Seeing what he did to himself for The Machinist, I can imagine that if he felt he was in the "zone" he wouldn't be cool about someone interrupting it.
Edit: I also love how he keeps the American accent through the first half and slowly degrades into his normal voice.

That cracks me up, the whole point of being a professional actor is that you have the self control to ignore everything outside the scene and do the fucking scene =)
While I can understand he's pissed about the distraction he needs to get a fucking grip, I mean what the fuck does he think he's doing bitch slapping tihs fucking guy right in the fucking middle of the fucking scene?
seriously, what the fuck?

exactly.
interesting that he says "we're fucking done professionally" at the end of the clip, as nothing i heard would lead me to believe that he knows a damn thing about being a professional.
a mediocre-decent actor gets a couple big roles that make him look better than he is and this is the result. it's just a damn shame the guy didn't slap the crying baby down.
I don't get it.....
What is up with the little video clip that keeps replaying? Was this just an audio recording that they took and just added the little video clip to it?

Yeah. That video clip is from "Harsh Times," which was a movie Bale was in a few years ago. He played a crazy Iraq war vet who went absolutely nuts in the movie. Guess he wasn't acting too much.

Not sure why people are surprised. This is a man who tried to feed a stray cat to an ATM.
Anyone interested in some classic Actor meltdowns also should check out Klaus Kinski. The guy invented the genre. Werner Herzog did a great documentary on him.

Indeed, My Best Fiend (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200849/) is an excellent way to get acquainted with the Herzog/Kinski express. The Wrath of God is one of my favorite movies.
In Kinski's defense - he was truly insane. Bale's dickishness is most likely curable.

Saw a link on another forum to something from AICN about this.

I liked the part about the "emotional center" of a terminator film.

I liken it to Tiger Woods being pissed at photographers for taking pics while he's swinging.
If the DP did something that he shouldn't be doing in a situation as described by AICN, then I say he deserves what he gets.

I don't think anyone that is rational about this is surprised that Bale flipped out. What's a bit surprising is the length and vehemence of the flip out. What is disappointing is that McG didn't step in more forcefully and get Bale away from the set to calm down. All three of those guys - Bale, McG and Hurlbut - look bad after this incident IMO.

Was this covered earlier? His actual apology?

Bale came on a local radio station, too, after the local radio guys making fun of his rant actually made him laugh in the middle of all this going on (Kevin & Bean from KROQ, for you locals).
It was a good conversation actually. He sounded pretty contrite. He didn't try to explain it away other than to say that that scene in particular is one in which his character is very much on edge. He said it was inexcusable behavior and he knows it.
He also noted that he and the DP continued to work with each other the rest of that day, and for another month of shooting after that, and that they had long settled this (the incident was last July). He didn't say they were good friends or nothing, but that they were fine with each other.
That clip is just straight nuts, but he gained points with me with how he handled himself on the radio show. I might give him more leeway because I myself have had my own rants, but I thought he came off pretty well.
Hopefully he is considering seeking a little help for anger issues, but he didn't bring that up in the interview.

Oh, what do you know, the link above on Bale's apology is to an article about the very interview he gave to Kevin & Bean. So I guess that was the apology interview I heard.

Kevin and Bean's clips of of the fake Christian Bale were awesome. But their reaction to the Bale actually calling in was amazing.

i can relate to Bale. last nite i had one of my anger flipouts (i have little to no patience...*sigh*) in my car cuz i got disconnected for the 3rd time with a XBox Live service rep. i took my phone and threw it at my windshield (it cracked. yay). that wasn't enough. my wife demanded i stop the car to go to the backseat so when i got out i took my phone and threw it mightily against the concrete. the little motherfornicator still worked.
i got nothing but respect for LG phones.

As was stated in the interview, have your worst day taped, have one of your meltdowns recorded and see how it goes over with the public eye. This is someone who gets paid a lot of money to amplify his emotions, it shouldn't be surprising when he has a problem reigning it in.
Not saying this excuses what he did but he made a public and very sincere sounding apology so it's hard to write this guy off as a douche or prick based off this episode.

Grownups just don't have meltdowns like that. Its kind of what defines the term "grownup"

True, but then again most grown-ups don't make their living acting either.

That justifies him acting like a five year old?
My point was that for the vast majority of Americans, having our worst day past college taped, we would not look anywhere as childish as he does there.
Can he get away with it because of the economic value he provides his employers? Yes.
Is he still an asshat for doing that? Again, yes.

Considering the rant went on-and-on-and-on...that made Bale seem like much more like an ass-hat than if he had just blown up, yelled at the guy and stormed off the set.

What I would prefer is for people to stop making actors and actresses into role models and generally important people. Bale makes movies. As long as he doesn't hurt anyone, I don't care what he does.

I'm not necessarily justifying it - I think the flipout exceeded the cause by a longshot - but I also think it's hard for someone that isn't an actor to really understand what actors go through. Bale is paid to channel emotions and personalities that are not necessarily his and make them seem real to the rest of us.
I don't know the scene in question (I guess maybe we'll figure it out once the movie is out). But let's say, for the sake of argument, that it's a highly emotional scene where his character is at the end of his rope. Many actors have to use method techniques to do their craft, meaning they really are in that moment.
As has been noted since this leak came out, the DP had been asked multiple times by Bale to not move around and adjust his lighting as the scene was being filmed (this is an unusual lighting technique BTW). But he did it again even after being asked multiple times not to.
Given all this, I'm a lot more sympathetic to Bale's rant. Doesn't justify the extent of the intensity and duration of it, but I think Bale, the DP and the director all share blame for it and I'm less inclined to think Bale is a complete ass.

I think it's probably best that sensitive people avoid being anywhere within 500 feet of me when I have something that could be described as a meltdown.
That wasn't even half way up my scale of a decent rant, or what has become known around here as "a Jon fit". He sounded kind of like my opening act or something.
