Are there any turn-based or real time strategy/simulation games with a car blowing up other cars theme? I'm not looking for a GTA type game, I'm looking for more of a focused cars with machine guns, armor plating, etc., fighting each other, more of a spy hunter type game.

There was an MMORPG I think called Auto Assault, I do not know how it is going though.

Man, I loved Autoduel. Easily one of my favorite computer games of all time.

I liked Interstate 76 well enough. It wasn't great, but pretty enjoyable. The sequel, I heard, was pretty bad. That game's quite dated now.

Loved Autoduel. One of the only computer games I actually finished. I-76 was great as well, but I got stuck in one of the sections and gave up. Was a pretty fun multiplayer shooter as well.
I would love to see an updated version of Autoduel/Car Wars.

The official servers have been shut down by NCSoft now due to the small playerbase.
Not sure if there are any unofficial servers running.

Yeah, when I got to our game night Sunday, some of the guys were playing Frag. I started thinking about Steve Jackson games and then realized that he hasn't had many original good games since Illuminati and Car Wars.
I used to like Car Wars quite a bit, but it took so long to play. Plus, it was always quite a bit like Spy Hunter (the arcade game) which I enjoyed as well. So, I decided that I would try to come up with a Car Wars clone that would not bog down in minutiae as well as try and find a computer game for it.

"Where the right of way goes to the biggest guns".
post-apocalypse (someone comes up with a blight that kills both grain and oil.. society falls apart, and this is it's attempting to climb back)
People hole up in cities and fortress towns.. the roads between cities are filled with gangs on motorcycle.. Only the best armed/armored cars and trucks travel in between cities. This has led to the "sport" of autodueling.. where it's kinda like demolition derby, with machine guns, rocket launchers, flame throwers and minedroppers. (needless to say, the fatality rate from top duels can be rather impressive).
Cars are classified in duels based off their price ($5,000=Division 5, $10,000=Division 10) etcetera.
Read the short story "Why Johnny Can't Speed" for the inspiration behind Car Wars.

Well there was also Ogre and GURPS. GURPS is still going strong with the 4th edition to be released this year and there is a buttload of campaign modules. And I hear Munchkin and Toon are good games, but since console gaming gone up, less people have any interest in pen and pencil roleplaying games.

Anyway back to the subject....
There are a few games that deal with car combat, but the closest thing to Car Wars/Autoduel are the last two:
Highway Pursuit (http://www.adamdawes.com/windows/win_hpursuit.html) - Spy Hunter type game.
Mad Cars (http://realore.com/madcars/) - It's like those RC Car games, but with some weapon/defense options.
Darkwind (http://www.dark-wind.com/) - Yellow5 first introduced this to me, but I never got a chance to play. It is a turned based game and sounds close to Autoduel since it takes the character's abilities in account.
Mexican Motor Mafia (http://www.scienceoftomorrow.com/mmm_main.htm) - Been around for about 3 years and does have the closest feel to a Car Wars/Autoduel type game. Linear story with real time action.

Ok, the more I have thought about this, the more ridiculous the idea that no one has ever decided to do a "re-make" of Autoduel.
I am thinking of a "Baldur's Gate" or "Fallout 2" type of game, with RP elements, but a heavy emphasis on cars, driving, the Car Wars type of stuff. Why hasn't anyone made this?

Well, he did say SINCE Illuminati and Car Wars so Ogre doesn't count.

Yeah, but those both pre-date Car Wars and Illuminati. I think Ogre was late 70s and GURPS was around that date as well.

You are right about Ogre, but GURPS came out when I was in high school. Had to double check to make sure, but it came out in 1986:

Oh and Car Wars came out in 1980, Illuminati came out in 1982. Munchkin is currently his cash cow and that came out in 2000.

I can remember the many hours spent as a kid playing Roadwar 2000 on my friend's computer. Pulling up along side somebody in a bus and letting loose was good fun.

I was playing that last night. I never realized that there was a plot before.

Yes, my gang is known as the Highway Hex and we got 6th place in a standard 18 person race. So we earned some winnings to hopefully purchase cars for my crew in the future. Pretty fun.
