View Full Version : One More Time: Civ4 Pitboss redux

Yeah, the last Pitboss game didn't go well, and it was my fault. I've played in and hosted several games to their conclusion since then, and I've got the kinks out (plus now I'm no longer on a wireless connection), so I'm gonna try again.
For those that are interested, I'd be more than happy to host another Pitboss game. We can make it normal Civ4, or even Warlords, if y'all want to try it. If you are interested and are willing to give me another shot at this, respond so I know how large to make the game.
Also indicate whether you want a normal Civ game or a Warlords game.

I'm in. It doesn't matter to me which game we play.
If we play Vanilla, I would like to be Catherine. If we play Warlords, I would like to be Elizabeth.

Are you wanting to try regular Civ or Warlords? If everyone doesn't have Warlords, we'll go with regular.
As it stands now, including me, we should have 6 people interested so far. A few more and we'll be set.

What's pitboss?
It stands for Persistant Turn Based System, or PTBS (Pitboss). It's much like PBEM, only the game stays in a server, hense players can take their turns any time during the turn period (set by the Pitboss owner, usually 24 hours). It allows casual play while guaranteeing at least 1 turn per period (again, usually 24 hours).
I host the game, it stays on my computer. You go online, using my IP, and play your turn. When you're done, you log off, and wait to the next turn. You don't have to wait for someone to take their turn, and the most you have to wait to take the next turn is 24 hours. It eliminates the problem of one person causing the whole game to die off.
Only the person hosting the game has to have anything special on their computer. When everyone takes their turn (or 24 hours pass), each person gets an email telling them to take the next turn.
Other than that, it's the same as any other turn-based game. Basically, if you enjoy PBEM games, but hate the fact that they die when one person does take their turn, Pitboss is for you.
We can make this a normal Civ4 game. Is there any particular settings anyone would be interested in?

Ok, let's set this up, then:
Normal Civ4 game (so you don't have to have Warlords), Huge map, Raging Barbarians.
8 players, so everyone should be able to take a Civ. Catherine is reserved for Spleen, since he specifically asked, so please do not take Catherine.
For those who have never played in a Pitboss game:
Open Civ4.
Select "Multiplayer"
Select "Direct IP Game"
The name of the game is "FOFC Dominion"
Enter the following IP: 24.154.139.119 The password is: fofc
Then just take your turn as normal, then log off when you're done. PM me your email address so that you will receive new turn notifications.
I'll send another post when this is fully setup.

Ok, it's set up. Log on using the above instructions, then PM me with your email address.
One more thing...after you select your civ, it'll ask you to set a password. PLEASE do so, as it protects your civ from someone else accidentally taking it.
I look forward to eliminating your civilization soon. :)
Wednesday: as long as you let me know when you'll be gone, you're more than welcome. It'll simply skip your turn each day while you're away. Everyone else will still have at least one turn each day.
The Civs in the game:
Catherine: (saved for Spleen)
Elizabeth:
Montezuma:
Julius Caesar:
Alexander:
Washington: WVUFan

Once you PM me your email address, you'll get an email from CivStats asking you to confirm. The rest I'll set up for you.
You can also directly register if you like -- go to www.civstats.com (http://www.civstats.com), and click on "Create Account" on the top right of the screen. Our game is located below:
http://www.civstats.com/viewgame.php?gameid=230
There should be a "Register your Leader" and it'll ask you which leader you are. The password is fofc as always.
Civstats is a website that allows you to see the details of the game even when you're not in it. It also send out emails whenever a new turn is ready to go.

Everyone:
It's come to my attention that a bunch of us are very, VERY close to each other right at the beginning. It's entirely possible that I accidentally put a smaller map when setting up the game.
A couple of people have expressed interest in resetting the game from the start, since we're fairly early into the game. This decision I'm gonna leave up to you guys, so please post here to see if that's what you would like to do or keep things as is.
If this is my fault (and it very well be), I do apologize. Y'all let me know how you want me to proceed. If most want to continue as it is, that's cool with me. If most want to reset, that's cool too.

It's intermittent. It's because of the ISDN router I have at home, I think... every now and then it happens - although it doesn't happen EVERY time, because I've connected to other people (and had other people connect to me) while I've been on there.
But, if you have a fix, I'd be happy to try it. She's not on the same subnet as the game server, though.

Does it only happen when she and you are both on? I had a similar problem with my wife - basically, there's a single port defined in config for in/out - if she and I were both on the same subnet playing on an server somewhere else, we could each connect fine, but anyone else joining would bomb out since it was trying to communicate to the same external IP/port for both of us. Fixed it by changing the NetComm port (Port = 205x) in the CivilizationIV.ini for both regular and Warlords (in My Document \ My Games). I did that for the three machines we run Civ on - mine, hers, and our server's - and made each a unique value and the problem went away. Dunno if that would work in your situation, but worth a shot.

There's a program called Hamachi that when you run it, lets you (really really easily) create or join a 'VPN'. A VPN is a Virtual Private Network which is tech talk for a virtual LAN.
The reason I mention this is that my lady and I wanted to play Civ with my brother but like Franklin and his lady, we had problems with both of us behind one router connecting to someone outside.
Using Hamachi meant that we all appeared to be on the same network and therefore Civ worked a dream from the get go.
I doubt the entire game here would want to do this but it is a solution for those with the "multiple players behind one router" problem.

Why don't they understand, It's just a part of the game
The turns aren't flying in the epic mode
We start to find resources to find that motherlode
Greece is the word

It's got groove it's got meaning
Greece is the time, is the place is the motion

I have good and bad news.
Good news -- I got Vanilla Pitboss games to work side by side with Warlords game, thanks to same edits to the .ini file for the Vanilla game.
Bad news -- the old save file is not compatable because of the changes to the .ini file.
Sooo .. the question becomes do y'all want to start again, or just call it quits? I've been running a Warlords game now for nearly a month with nearly no issues of disconnection, so the part problems of the game being down every other day is gone (ask Spleen -- he's in it).
I'll leave the ultimate decision up to you guys.
