Is there going to be any mail delivered on Monday?

I can see Veterans Day on my calendar on SATURDAY, but no mention of it on Monday. Is Veterans Day a Holiday?

Veterans Day was observed on Friday, and most government workers had that day off.

Friday was a down day for me also. But I worked harder than if I was at work, that's for sure. Spent the morning with my landlord chopping wood for the upcoming winter. I always love places with four-seasons, but we are soooo not ready for a long cold winter. Brrrrrr... :)

Wait a sec, you're in Germany, aren't you? Veteran's Day is an American holiday isn't it? Or did you have the day off for another reason?

November 11 was originally declared Armistace Day in commemoration of the end of WWI, sometime back in the 1920's. Eisenhower moved it to the 4th Monday in Oct and declared it Veteran's Day. There apparently were some problems with this day and in 1978 Congress moved it back to Nov 11. At least that's what I remember from the speech I heard Friday in the ceremony we had.

Only Americans that work for the military and govt had the day off. The Germans did not have the day off. At least, I don't think they did, unless they work for the US bases here in the area.

Ah that makes sense.

Heh heh I somehow doubt the Germans were celebrating if that was the original reason for Vet's Day. ;)

It is a holiday here in France, and is indeed the celebration of the end of WW I.
