Is there an assistant coach in football (college or pro) that you would like to see get a head coaching job? Obviously most of us have no clue of the interview skills of any coach, organizational skills, etc. I know all of that has to be taking into account. I am looking more at the production of the unit they coach, their ability to develop players, and in the case of college football their ability to recruit. I have two coaches in mind. The first one would be Randy Shannon, the defensive coordinator of the Hurricanes. Yes, it is a homer pick, but hear me out. The defenses he has coordinated have been consistently among the best in the nation. He was the 2001 winner of the Frank Broyles Award as the best assistant coach in the country. As far as the development of players goes, he is credited with Ray Lewis, Jessie Armstead, and Michael Barrow as a LB coach.
The second guy is Tom Moore. How is it possible that this guy has not gotten a head coaching job as yet? 42 years of coaching experience, 28 of which in the NFL. 18 years as an offensive coordinator. He has helped coached the Steelers to two Super Bowl wins. He led the Lions to record breaking offenses. And now what we see from the Colts over the last 8 years is unbelievable. Whether is it is with a three wide out set, double tight end, 2 RB and 2 WR, players in his offenses just seem to produce year after year. Yes Peyton Manning is a great player but I am not necessarily willing to discount Moore's influence on his development. Hell his offenses produce in Detroit with Scott Mitchell at QB.
