OK, so I'm sitting in the general discussion section of the board and I hit refresh. So it starts to refresh, and an ad from gamespy comes up in the window. Thankfully they have the "skip ad" button, but I think I'm not the only one who will be displeased if this becomes commonplace.

Say it isn't so guys.

I'm using Firefox. It's like when you're on IGN and you click on an article and it takes you to an ad first.

Nor have I had a pop-up using the yellow background.

When I clicked on this, I had to go through an ad to get here. If that continues, I say we ditch this place.

I can't get it to do it. Were you linking from the webpage?

I think it just happens at random (not really random, but you know what I mean).

SirFozzie

if it happens to all, then yeah, it's time to go.

Using default skin though.

Do I need to put my pants back on though?

That's the last straw.

Since I've started using the yellow skin, no ads at all. And, although it's horrible at first, after a while you get used to it, so much so that the original is just wrong.

Kinda like going from Tizer to beer :)

stevew

I hate ads...this however, doesnt seem all that annoyingly often, only have gotten it to happen once. It's still probably worth the tradeoff of a free site for add banners/occasional annoyances. That is, unless someone wants to set up the new site and take the risk of fronting it out of pocket.

SirFozzie
11-22-2005, 05:32 PM
Ie you hit go to general discussion, and it says "Watch this ad first!"

Gee,great.. "FUCKING TIME STAMP BUG" too.

It's last year all over again!

Great....I came acroos an ad just doing a search on "General Discussion". Not cool. I also see an ad on the main page that doesn't go away. Not on the forum, but the main page.

Maple Leafs

I'm seeing them in the "Day at the office" skin.

Marginally annoying, but not the end of the world depending on the content.

Mr. Wednesday
11-22-2005, 05:40 PM
The positive is, you can click through it very quickly. The negative is, it's still an inconvenience, and since I usually use "back" in my browser to back out of a thread, I'll need to remember to go two levels whenever I've gone through one of the things.

Easy Mac
11-22-2005, 05:42 PM
Just to make it clear:

This is not a banner ad. This is an ad where you go to a website to read an article, but before hand they show you an ad. You can click through it, but it is extremely annoying.

The other weird thing I am seeing is that it is only showing 4 people logged on, but yet a number of you guys are somehow posting with your screen names.

Mr. Wednesday
11-22-2005, 05:47 PM
Yeah, Firefox will do nothing for you on this. They substitute the ad page for the board page and you have to watch the ad or click through it before you can see the board page you requested.

What the frick? I know GoldenEagle and I aren't the only one signed in. It only bothers me because I don't know what else could be off. I'm seeing a something similar here too.

I'm thinking it might be related to the time stamp bug--if there are multiple servers during the upgrade, maybe we're only seeing the folks on the individual server we're on.

Antmeister
11-22-2005, 06:00 PM
Oooh, if you refresh the page, you get random people. We could make a new game of this in the future.

Before they switched servers, performance sucked when I tried to access the board from home. Now it's practically unusable -- I often have to hit reload to get a page to come up. Is there some kind of snit between GameSpy and SBC that I should know about?

Out of curiousity, what browser are you using?

Mr. Wednesday

Internet Exploder. I've used it at work with no problems, though. I split between Internet Exploder and Firefox at work, depending on which OS I currently have booted (WinXP or RHEL3).

Just try Firefox to see if it makes a difference. I know that when I originally joined the boards, I used IE and it was terribly slow. After the switch, it went much smoother. But to be honest with you, I don't know the true reason behind why one browser worked over the other.

I believe we have plans to make if so.

It isn't the end of the world righht now, but if they don't get enough revenue from the way it is now, we might be seeing these things constantly. I think changes may be in the air.

I'd definitely throw in a few bucks.. cause if the ad rate continues at the rate i'm getting it... 4/10 moves.. it will be hard to not get pissed off

same here, especially when I try and quote someone, the whole screen goes white and nothing happens, and it gives me some HTML code or some type of code at the top.

This new board is just lovely! I love all the errors, the bugs, good to see them back, they are all just super!:D

Why is it so terrible that we get an ad here and there for a service that is being provided to us for free that involves a very high bandwidth every month?
