So I was flipping around on the internet trying to see what that hot chick from Keen Eddie was doing now (turns out she had a nice scene in Alfie, but thats neither here nor there). Turns out the show was actually released on DVD, so I was thinking of picking it up, because although it was short-lived, I found it quite enjoyable. Well, I read some reviews on it, and everyone is pissed off because 90% of the music in the show is not on the DVD release. Turns out the tv company didn't want to pay royalties for the songs, so they filled it with useless songs. Now in Keen Eddie, the music normally helped to convey the mood of the show and sometimes foreshadowed things to come... I'm sure music does that for a lot of shows. Needless to say, I'm going to hope reruns somehow magically appear and just burn them on DVDs before I break down and buy the DVD set.

Does anyone else find this practice idiotic on the part of the studios? I mean, on the Married with Children DVDs, after season 2, they don't have the theme song on there anymore because they didn't want to pay for it... WTF? Thats the most memorable thing about the show. Granted, most of the time I probably won't notice, but its the principle... I don't want to pay $30 for a bastardized version of the show. I'd rather just pay $50 and get the real thing.

Anyone else think this, or do you just not care?

I'd presume these shows were made before release to DVD became profitable? If so, it's an understandable oversight in their original rights acquisition for the songs, and I can see how it would develop that they would be unwilling to pay for additional rights -- I would imagine that the rights-holders might not be especially accomodating.

No, it's been happening even on recent shows. Felicity DVDs had totally different music and the reruns did also. So the only time the original music appeared was on the original broadcast airing.

Also, this is why WKRP hasn't been released -- since music was such a big part of that show.

Bands can make good money re-recording the songs that we have come to associate with tv shows, movies, etc.

If a company doesn't wish to pay for the origional piece of music, they are now starting to get cover tunes done of the song. It's a newer thing that is just starting to take off, and pay well for some people. One of my bosses has been involved in gathering cover songs from across the country for this particular purpose. He finds bands that have done popular songs, and works with them to get it out to various markets. You would be suprised how many cover songs are out there....good and bad.

You bypass the high cost of rights for the song, and only have to pay a maximum of $.07 per song (per unit sold) for right to re-record a different version. This is a mechanical license. This is still too much money for some companies, which is why you get the totally different music on some re-broadcasts and re-releases of stuff.
