Has anyone ever tried to share files between two laptops ? A friend of mine asked me to give him a hand and I don't see why he can't share files. The workgroup has been set to share files.

Very little info here. I'll say personally that I could not get my laptop to work on my workgroup until I loaded the NetBIOS protocol. I don't know why, because it should have been fine using tcp/ip. Just one of those things.

i'm going to piggyback on this topic by asking why I can't seem to setup a serial connection between my old laptop and my new one to transfer files/settings/FOF/etc. It's a damn serial connection, it's not that hard. I plug the serial cable in right? So I've done that and I've even gone in and created a null-modem connection between the two but still when I try to use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" it won't autodetect the damn serial cable.

Note: All of my Windows Firewalls and Internet Connection Sharing and all that is disabled. Anyone with any idea what the problem is? Otherwise I'm just going to put them both online and transfer the files that way tomorrow afternoon.

That I've never done. Just a guess, but did you try setting-up a workgroup? Also, is your older laptop using an older OS?

I'm assuming that the two laptops are XP? There are a couple of things that work differently with it than Windows 2000.

Usually what I do is go into Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Local Security Policy. Once the Local Security Policy window opens up, I'll go to Local Policies, then Security Options. Scroll down to the Network Policy entries, and there are two you want to look at. One is "Network Access:Let Everyone policies apply to anonymous users". Set it to enabled. The other is "Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts." Set it to "Classic- local users authenticate as themselves". This will allow you to set permissions at the file and folder level for particular users. Once you make these changes, and set the permissions on the files you want to share, you should be able to map a drive, and use the "Log in as a different user" option.

Homer...I didn't try setting up a workgroup, but I don't believe that's necessary. I have the "host" one setup to receive incoming connections and I have the "guest" one setup to make them and they are directly connected to each other. And they're both running XP. I'm going to poke around online and see if I can find a step-by-step guide, I just thought I'd ask here since I know the level of knowledge on FOFC is high.

I'm not certain of this, but if I remember back from my LapLink days, that the serial cable need to be wired crossover, not straight through. You said you set up a null modem connection, but are you using a null modem serial cable?

I didn't think so, but I was just guessing. And I was asking about the OS because I know XP doesn't like non-NT based OS (esp. Win95).
