Washington State at New Mexico last Friday night on ESPN. So the Cougars won the game, blocking a punt and rallying late to take it 21-17. But in truth, that wasn't the story. I wanted to give due credit to a spunky New Mexico team, and particularly their running back, DonTrell Moore, who laid a 24-167 rushing game on us. The guy is a legitimate stud, and has stop/start moves reminiscent of Barry Sanders. Check him out of you can.

New Mexico plays some crazy defensive schemes, and they are undersized but very quick. Frankly, they outscrapped us most of the game and we were lucky to escape with a win.

Dontrell Moore is a guy no one talks about but he is pretty good.

If you don't play New Mexico on a regular basis their defensive schemes can give you fits. They do a lot of zone blitzing off variations of the 4-2-5 and they do it with reckless abandon. They recruit a lot of running backs in state and turn them into linebackers and safeties. I like Osia Lewis their defensive coordinator and Rocky Long their head coach a lot.

BYU does the same thing out of a 3-3-5. There was some crazy stuff going on out there Saturday. I'll have to keep an eye out for a New Mexico game. I love creative defense.

Yeah, I remember one time where they had only two defensive linemen, and both were lined up outside the left offensive tackle! Ironically, they got good pressure on the play because the guards, center, and right tackle didn't know what to do with themselves. Crazy.

I think they play Texas Tech next week. Freak offense vs. freak defense.
