Solve the following clues. They are not in any order, but they comprise a set of which one part is missing. Name the missing part of the set, and you’ve got the answer to this puzzle.
*Dive into that big drink on the rocks.
*Bill W. gets it done for free.
*Count the flashbacks to getting deserted.
*Nine minus one crowns a successful dead-ringer in the third.
*He faces a bit of a crisis (confidentially), after seven.
*Not lawyers, there’s the rub.
*It’s an attractive matter if you’re over it.
*Shellfish and chocolate give you the runs.
*“Not yet,” crowed the phoenix.

I have a vague sense of Shakespeare from these clues (esp. Not lawyers, there’s the rub.), but can't really put my finger on it.

I'll assume this is the point when all enigmas start to worry that they've fathered a lemon.
Either you're all furiously scribbling away on cocktail napkins, or the nibblers haven't taken the bait. Any signs of life?

"Shellfish and chocolate give you the runs" seems to refer to some sort of food allergy or intolerance, but I don't know my medical terms well enough to name it.
Any ideas on who Bill W could be?
Danny

Bill Walton? William Wallace? William Wonka? :)
Bill W is almost always a reference to Bill Wilson, the founder of alcoholics anonymous

The phoenix rises every 100 years. So "not yet" would be... um... less than that.

Albionmoonlight and EagleEye11 are on the right track with a couple references, but in general you guys are barking up the wrong tree.

The Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter book 5)???
Probably not...

Okay, hint time. The following are definitely on the right track.
I have a vague sense of Shakespeare from "Not lawyers, there’s the rub"
and
Bill W. = William Wallace?

FREEDOM!!!!

Maybe it has to do with revolts/revolutions.
Wallace led a revolt/revolution, and the "first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" line is from a scene set in the Pesant's Revolt.
The problem is all the other clues. :)

If "Freedom" is what we were supposed to get from the Bill W clue, then perhaps these are all names of sports teams? I did a quick search ofa couple leagues that I don't knwo too well, but couldn't find anyone named "Freedom." But surely there has to be some sports league (perhaps with ten teams?) that has a Philadelphia Freedom or somesuch? Maybe the missing team name is the answer here?
Just a stab...

Oh, for what it's worth: "kill all the lawyers” was said by Dick the Butcher in Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part II.
There's mention of a "third" and a "seventh" in the clues -- perhaps those are somehow other references to either royalty (known by their numerals) or works written about them?
...getting desperate...

To show just how powerful their marketing reach was, the Washington DC area (i.e. Quik's backyard) WUSA team was the Freedom.
Perhaps that is why the league failed?
There were, however, only 8 WUSA teams, so I think that that's a dead end.

If "Freedom" is what we were supposed to get from the Bill W clue
Not exactly...but if you connect the clue "Bill W. gets it done for free" and the cry of "FREEDOM!" you should immediately think of something, which in turn should give you a breakthrough.

I'm thinking that my moviegoing experience has a void that hurts me here.
I don't immediately think of anything... but I know next to nothing about William Wallace, and (probably more importantly) never saw Braveheart.

I think it is pointing towards Braveheart. The William Wallace character does cry "Freedom" as they begin a battle.
I'm not sure where that gets us though. Is it a list of films? Best picture winners, perhaps?

To expand a bit...
It could be Best Picture winners of the 1990s.
Shellfish and Chocolate give you the runs--Forrest Gump?

*He faces a bit of a crisis (confidentially), after seven.
Could reference Kevin Spacey from Amercian Beauty... he was in the film Se7en before that one.
And the parenthetical reference is also to LA Confidential, I suppose. *slaps head*

Sure looks like you guys have it... just a matter of someone figuring out which movie is missing from the list?
Nice work, good to see one of these come and go and actually understand the solution.

Maybe rather than 1990-1999, the list should be the last ten years' worth? Just an alternative, if we get caught up with the earliest ones on that list...

Just idle musings, really...
*Dive into that big drink on the rocks. TITANIC
*Bill W. gets it done for free. BRAVEHEART
*Count the flashbacks to getting deserted. ENGLISH PATIENT?
*Nine minus one crowns a successful dead-ringer in the third. LOTR: ROTK?
*He faces a bit of a crisis (confidentially), after seven. AMERICAN BEAUTY?
*Not lawyers, there’s the rub. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE?
*It’s an attractive matter if you’re over it.
*Shellfish and chocolate give you the runs. FORREST GUMP?
*“Not yet,” crowed the phoenix.

The enigma is under new management. At last.
QuikSand's last clue was a major stepping stone. The list of Best Picture winners was indeed the last ten years' worth, rather than the 1990s.
New puzzle soon.

I like your thinking on the last ten years. I had the same thought for Titanic and the LOTR: ROTK makes sense.
I never saw the English Patient, so I can't help there.
