View Full Version : From hell's heart, I stab at thee!

What a great line. Is that Shakespeare?
And can anyone guess where I am getting that line? I'm watching one of my favorite movies as a kid. :)
(and first time in a long time, too).

I think it's from Moby Dick, actually.

It's from Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan.
Chief Rum

Well, that's where I got it from, sabotai. I haven't seen Khan in years, and they showed it tonight at AMC. Great fun to see it again.
I figured that line had to have come from a literature great, though, and not from some hack writer for Star Trek, so it would make sense to me if it's from Moby Dick.

Just to make it clear, I was kidding. :)
Edit: Peregine upped me by quoting more of the passage. :p

Moby Dick, yep.
"Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee!"

Billy's right. The original line is from Moby Dick.
Makes it kind of interesting in one of the later ST movies (First Contact, I think?) when there's another Moby Dick reference regarding Picard and his Borg obsession.
Chief Rum
04-13-2004, 12:26 AM
Heh, Khan said the last part of that quote, too. :)

You mean the guy that wrote the Wrath of Khan and episodes of T.J. Hooker didn't write great literature? Damn, I went to the wrong college...

Good point, Sackattack. I looked it up, and the movies have different writers all around (even including story and screenplay writers and uncredited help; probably editors).
So either it's coincidence, or they got a big reaction from using Moby Dick references in the second one, big enough to throw it in there in First Contact. Of course, Picard is just the sort of bloke who would know that sorta stuff, so it fit.

"Revenge is a dish best served cold...and it is very cold in space."
Classic movie. :) I actually have heard that the Moby Dick theme was present throughout all of Star Trek II, with Kahn having an obsession with Kirk / The Enterprise. There are supposedly other parallels, but I don't recall them.
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.
After all these years, it still gets to me as Spock slowly dies on the radiation chamber floor. One of the most touching cinematic moments.
Khan, I'm laughing at the superior intellect.
Proud to say I've used this one in many day to day conversations over the years

I've never had any interest in Star Trek, but I do remember that "bug in the ear" scene really creeping me out as a kid.
And kudos for working a mention of Clash of the Titans into the thread. That one was standard birthday party fare for a year, right up there with The Blackhole.

Maple Leafs, I too didn't like that sceen as a child (or even much now really). I was also afraid when Kirk yelled KAHN! :)

Actually, I saw Halloween when I was 4... I think my parents thought I was asleep, but I wasn't. That Shatner mask still creeps me out.

Did anyone see the Daily Show episode a while back where Jon Stewart was talking about A.Q. Khan, that Pakistani guy who was selling the nuclear weapon parts to all the rogue nations? Pretty funny, he was in the middle of delivering his little spiel about the guy when he suddenly paused, said Khan...Khan (a little louder), then threw his head back and they got the overhead camera shot of him yelling KHAN! It really cracked me up.
