Do you recall the fever? The passion…the zeal? Where were you when West Virginia almost conquered the known world?
In the beginning, there was the Place of Places tournament. A basketball-style battle of wits, stats, and zingers galore. One place emerged victorious.
Now, it’s for the gold.
And the turd.
The 2003 FOFC State Olympics will soon begin. It will be unbridled warfare on a grand scale. State will battle state to determine who is the best – and worst – among the 50. And oh yeah, Canada.
There will be Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals awarded in 5 positive categories, and Turd, Scab, and Fungus medals awarded in 5 negative categories, as seen in the attached table.
I’d like to get two volunteers to serve as judges (I will be the tie-breaking vote). Judges cannot participate in the events, and must declare their state in advance so as to avoid charges of favoritism. Let me know if you’d like to be a judge by posting in this thread. Thanks!

I have no idea what this is all about. I think that makes me perfectly qualified to judge the competition.

Aaaaah. The Place of Places tournament. The reason I started posting at this board. What memories. The state pride. Learning impressive facts about states and their residents. The cameraderie between posters who previously hadn't given each other the time of day. F#*king Swaggs and Anxiety and their d%#n West Virginia hides, knocking of beloved Georgia in the semi-finals!!!!

I loved this game!
Illinois somehow beat California. That's about the only time it's ever beaten California

I'm all set to go for Georgia and Connecticut once again.
Unless, of course, I get a good free agent offer. Maryland, perhaps?

As much as I hate it, I may have to go Georgia this time also. Of course, I'll still be representing New York.
Let's just hope that enough other Georgians play to where I don't need to; Georgia is a pretty good representation of things I hate about this world.

But then I wouldn't be able to set people straight when they say 55 degrees is "cold".

All of this noise and not once did anyone mention the grand champion. Even our esteemed game master thought to mention only the inferior runner-up. How shameful.

I just wasn't sure if anyone needed to know that Wyoming won the whole thing.
Ooops, I mean Colorado.

dola
Okay, TroyF (Colorado), mckerney (Minnesota?), and Franklinnoble (California) will be the judges. I will get the rules for the State Olympics posted, and then we'll proceed with the first event: The Amazing Thing (emphasis on significant facts).
