A twitter friend invited me to this promotion/relegation trivia league. I think it fits some of the folks here and wasn't sure if anyone had played in it or had heard of it. I never had until he invited me.

I was lucky enough to get in before they started charging for it. THen they started bugging me for money. I said no I don't have money to spend on this. So they let me continue free. But even free I got bored with it. I did dig the head to head for awhile. The mini leagues within were much more fun since they are about one specific thing while the general learned league things are all over the map. But the mini leagues and day leagues were too few and far between...so much so that I just didn't check anymore.

Some are easier than others. I feel like you could hang and the first season is free. Plus there are tons of stats. It's basically IWS though in a sense. I stopped after my rookie year (and winning my Rundle, (::brushes shoulders off::) but that was largely because I didn't like having to remember to play everyday.

Yeah the stats and relegation component are what keep me in it. I'm a very average player. There is a fun strategy component too in setting defensive points.

It's part of my morning routine to lie in bed check e-mail and do my learned league questions.

Yeah, I haven't bothered to rejoin yet. The private rundle thing isn't possible unless everyone has an account at that level which is hella dumb (tm). But it's wild to me how many people I know online and IRL who have been talking to me about how they're joining.

I was in a trivia league at a local sports bar a while ago. One afternoon on the way I stopped at a record store and picked up a copy of "Business As Usual" by Men At Work. (so good).

The first question that night was "This was the debut album from 80s Australian band Men At Work". When it was answer time I pulled the CD out of my bag to show everyone the coincidence. I was asked to leave the league by the organizer because people complained that I was either getting the questions ahead of time or colluding. Fuck them.

So...there seems to be a very decent chance that Mick Mulvaney is in my rookie rundle this season.

Day One in my Rookie Season, A.K.A. I really suck at trivia.

I am also not good. Need to spend more time reading the questions.

I wasn't great either today.

Somehow, my opponent did worse. I won! And at least today I'm in first. That will change soon I realize, but it feels nice today.

I narrowed one of today's questions down to 2 possibilities and picked the wrong one. I wasn't close to getting 4 of the other 6.

I tied day 1, today is a definite loss.

I know nobody cares, but this person that runs the site is really good at creating questions. I'm 6 or 7 days in, and every day, just about every question I feel like I SHOULD know... whether or not I do is another question.

First couple of days, I got 2 right, last couple I've gotten 4. It has got to be hard to write questions that are not super easy, but also feel like you should get them right even when they are very hard.

Except Sfumato, I don't know wtf was going on there.

Totally agreed. I think it's the best font of good trivia questions I have ever seen, for that reason. Right in the correct channel of challenging, seemingly gettable, but not many giveaways.

I'm probably going to make the top 9 and make it to C level. I had an outside shot at top 3, but blew the last two days.

I handed the top guy his first loss of the season in week 18 or so. And I have the best defensive efficiency in my Rundle, so a couple of highlights.

Well if you look at my stats, you'll see that my win rate was unsustainable considering the number of questions I got right. My defense in later matches was poor.

Somehow, I managed to stay up in A this season. I'm sure there'll be a crash next season down to B

It was a weird season. Much easier than average to start, much harder later, then eased up a bit at the end.

Really excited about this Indie Music mini-league, got 5 of 6 today. A mini-league more up my alley, aside from "Sports Rules and Regulations" might not be possible.

i had more of those "oh, i might have gotten that if i had taken my time" this season than any season since my rookie...grrr

I'm definitely in the right place in D, though I have been upper half much of the time. This season I forfeited 3 times though and had to win on the final day to avoid relegation. I set up a text message to come in if I haven't done it by 5pm, b/c if I didn't get it done in the morning I'd completely forget, that helped a ton.

First, B Delta was a) the toughest B (at least up until a couple MD ago, haven't checked in a couple days) and b) one of the closest in margin to its A rundle (I think it was the second-smallest QPct difference at one point). So surviving it was nice. But...I wasn't really that impressive compared to the rest of the rundle. I think I'm in the bottom six for QPct. I have a better W/L plus-minus than I do MPD. The balls bounced very, very strangely. Give me a different schedule and I probably get demoted.

As such, I am in for PAIN in A. I'm happy to get the promotion, but next season gonna be UGLY.

I've played that game. It is rough, but sometimes you can be surprised how well you stick. I need a win in the last day to not drop 2 seasons in a row. And my TCA was pretty good.

I had major bad luck (17th percent according to the excel sheet) and ended up middle of the pack with the highest CAA in B Delta. HOpefully next season, I can move back up to A.

I consider myself B at this point (I'd thought B-, but my QPct for the past two seasons looks to be mid-pack for B across the league). Managed to finish 12th of 30 in A, because of a very fortunate OPD (Offensive Efficiency + Defensive Eff). The second straight season of that.

But I remembered as a kid that my family played a game called 500, which also fit the criteria: 500 (card game - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/500_(card_game))

Turns out that 500 is a variation on Euchre, so that makes sense.

I emailed the league, and I saw that they changed the correct answer to include 500.

Of course, my opponent assigned me zero points for the question, and I still lost the week. But it's the thought that counts.

I had my best season ever, finishing 4th in C.

I consider myself a high D / low C player, so this really was a great season for me. I fully expect to go back to low C next season.

And I got relegated back to D :-)

That's pretty much it. You can't really defend your opponents in R (maybe by the end of the season) so you just have to defend the questions.

What I always tell people is don't play defense based on what you would get wrong, score based on someone relatively well-informed but not too much. It's a crapshoot in rookie rundle, but...I figured it out about halfway through my rookie season, you just have to defend against layups and ensure that whenever they get a 3 pointer, it's well earned.

After a few rounds, you'll get a feel for it based on the types of questions and can adapt your strategy based on how you defend early. I've coached a few people to solid rookie defense seasons with those tenets, so...it's not all made up. if you're bad at math, don't assume everyone is. If you're not a history buff, doesn't mean someone else isn't. Try to measure the degree of difficulty of the question for anyone -- like is it a Jeopardy question? Or a bar trivia stumper? Somewhere in-between? That's how I score questions, even in A rundle, not totally based on stats because people will surprise you sometimes.

Definitely agree with this, speaking for myself as someone who has too many categories where I am just completely clueless, my biggest failing in defense is when I am unable to recognize that a question is decently well known by folks at a general level - maybe not a layup (but sometimes, yes), but you know an 8 foot jumper in a category where I can't even make the layups. If I ever take this serious enough to start studying, that's the thing that would immediately let me promote from D to C, is bumping up my minimal level of knowledge in art, food/drink, opera, theater and the like to recognize when something might be more common knowledge, even if I can't pull the answer myself, to defend it better.

One thing I love/hate about LL is the frequency with which an answer does not come to me right away, but there's at least some shot of "noodling" it, or just sitting back in hopes of the answer coming to me. I'm fairly knowledgeable with the sort of things trivia contests are built around, so I have a solid base... this sort of thing is basically my strongest suit.

For me, the toughest is the time I spend on a question where I have some tiny inkling that it might come to me, but it doesn't. Today, I gave up in agony on one specific question, only to see the correct answer upon submission and growl out a "oh hell I totally knew that." Happens fairly often. Yup. Yesterday it was "pipette" a term I 100% know, but since it didn't come to me in 90 seconds of agony, I just clicked and then smacked myself. Still beat tho.

...and today I got my other major personal LL weakness exposed... I entered in what I thought was a correct answer, then when I saw it was incorrect I went back and actually read the question in detail enough to see that my submission could not have been correct (and had I done so initially, i likely would have gotten the right answer)... so, 4/6 today should have been a 5.

I have been better with RTFQ errors. Still by no means perfect, but I think improving. Reading a couple thousand back questions may be helping with parsing the writing style, but also just going nice and slow.

And my happy ending is that I avoided relegation from B, after a mediocre effort this season with my own two Fs. Meh.

I don't have the backbone to really put some shoulder into this, like my friend just west of here, but... well, it would arguably be a better use of the channel of time I am spending on my fifth FOF team, or my current Madden-trading efforts, or whatnot.

Promoted again. My status as High D/Low C is reaffirmed.

I have a quick question. When looking at previous seasons, they always have the category listed before the question. Does this not happen during the season real time?

Categories are not revealed until the next day. And even then, some of them are...blurry.

Got my first 3 pointer today, surprisingly on the "panic" question. I assigned that one 0, thinking everyone would get it.

It's looking like this season's rookie class in division 2 is weaker than most seasons. I thought I would come out of in E, maybe barely sneaking into D. Right now I'm sitting low C. But I haven't played any of the top players yet.

I'm on the relegation bubble from Hinterland B... some spotty play and some bad luck, it seems. The guy in 2nd place has gotten a pretty uninspiring 40 correct answers but stands at 8-3-2... I have 51 correct and am at 5-7-1.

My record in Rundle B is below .500 so this in keeping... just sort of frustrating. I am not dedicated like Mr cuervo, whom I admire for his dedication.

5-6-2 for me.. with a -4 MPD rating and 12 pts 17th out of 30 in A . 3rd out of all of those with 12 points. ( The other two have MPD of 3, and -3)

Also on the relegation bubble in Hinterland B--only 42 correct answers and 4-7-2, but my defense has improved, at least.

The BUS/ECON question wasn't even classified as such - it was AMER HIST! Which kind of rankles me because my BUS/ECON get rate stinks and could use the help! :D

But yeah, it was a good set for me. 'Upanishads' was part of a NAQT page that I'd turned into flashcards; w/o that I wouldn't have gotten it. Even then I fat-fingered typing in the answer - UPDANISHADS* - but got a favorable commish ruling on it (though I did sweat it).

* I need to be more careful with this Mac keyboard; guess it's pretty sensitive.

I've been in D the entire time, I've also never really spent any time studying or trying to improve, and some days have to answer questions quickly/distracted/very tired due to the flow of my day, so my performance has been pretty erratic. I have had a few seasons where I finished top 10 and was reasonably close to promotion. I'm off to my best start ever and in 4th, playing good defense and near the top of my rundle in TCA... fingers crossed to keep it up, since most everyone I know has promoted to C.

I think, barring something unusual, I'm going to end up placed in D. Of the 8 matches remaining, 4 players are better than me, 2 are worse, and 2 are serial forfeiters. I was flirting with C for a while, but if I ended up there, I'd probably get slaughtered.

QS is all but safe in Hinterland B (I helped out by going 6/6 against somebody on his heels).

My last point of interest for the rundle is seeing if ZickC hangs on to promotion in incredibly lucky fashion.

I'm 1 point behind for the last promotion slot to get out of D and into C. I got 4 right today, the #4 guy is playing the #2 guy so maybe he'll lose. Fingers Crossed.

I must be super easy to defend against, as I only have two 3-pointers all season long.

I ended up finishing the rookie season on a 4-0-1 run, which moved me up to C. My lack of geography knowledge paid off as I got assigned a high point value for the Black Sea question I actually knew (thanks Diplomacy!), giving me the win and moving up in the standings.

I'm not feeling great about how next season will go, as I think my high finish was more a product of a weak rookie class filled with a bunch of forfeits. I think my issue is that the categories I do well in, I do real well, and the categories I'm bad at, I'm horrible. I was third lowest in PCAA, so defending me is not a challenge.

Last place in C, baby! And it wasn't even close :-)
