It's only beta right now, but close to release. Kind of a bit of Total War/Might and Magic/with empire management, TBS and unique card system.
You can play the beta by purchasing, so far I just played the tutorial but it's definitely grown on me already.

I've been playing this over the last week or so and really enjoy it. It's definitely a combination of HOMM/Kings Bounty - very much so - and X-Com - in terms of combat - with a little "Into The Breach" sprinkled in for good measure. It's a lot of fun.

So I noticed the Dark Souls series of games are on Sale on Steam this week, and I've never played them (GASP!), they always looked too well dark to me, and combat too much to handle for stroke slowed hands and hand-eye coordination (i use mouse and keyboard).
So I was wondering what people thought of the games here and would combat be okay given my issues? Okay to start with Dark Souls III or should I start with the first game?

I am! I’m nearing the end of Act 2 right now I think. The combat is always fun. It’s enjoyable to think how best to use each character and each ability to try to maximize damage and enemy control. Character progression is swift and interesting. There is some interesting game design choices that I’m not sure about, but overall I’d recommend the game.

I haven't finished the first one, and just played the intro for the second one to get a feel for that question, and I can tell you that you will definitely be spoiled by basically being told how the first one could have ended. I stop playing the second one because I didn't want to be spoiled any more than that. But you are not restricted on playing the second one if you've not finished the first if that's what you are asking.

So Minecraft Dungeons is available at some point today either on X Box Game Pass or the Microsoft Store for $20. I got in the beta (thanks Spleen!) that lets you play through the first couple zones and it certainly has the Minecraft feel in its graphics, monsters, loot, etc.
As you level up you get the ability to place enchantments (another Minecraft staple) on your gear, some of which are pretty nice or wild. There are boss mobs to fight which can be a challenge. Look for secrets and chests in a zone to get additional stuff/secret levels or dungeons. In between zones, there is a base/village to sell and store stuff in
Combat reminds me somewhat of Diablo where masses of mobs rush your position at time, but I found the combat one of the easiest to control/use of all games of this sort, which was a relief-a lot of it was just point in the direction of the mobs and fire/fight with your mouse. The main goal seems to be to find out the fate of the "Illagers" that disappear or are taken from the tutorial village you start in-not sure where the story goes after that.
The one thing I found lacking was that there is no crafting (at least in early levels) that comes from a game that relies so heavily on it
I certainly think its worth a try especially if you can play it for "free" on the Game Pass.

You have 120 levels and Vanilla plus 7 expansions. You can't level in all of them on your way to 120. It would take forever. Leveling is designed to take a certain amount of time. That time is spread throughout all of that.
Also, there is double XP right now until the next expansion pre-patch. So, leveling is really fast right now.

Got the hang of the game. Have a decent lead on the AI only for them to win with 74 points from fields at the end to beat me by 1 point.
74 points just from fields! Still trying to figure that out.

Have been a long time fan, it's really my #1 board game favorite, I think. (Dominion giving a strong run there) Got the iOS app for $10 a long time ago and got way more than my money's worth from that. Kids might end up in it before long, as stay-at-home tends to advance such things.
Hope you enjoy the game, it's so wonderfully conceived I am routinely amazed. A good game against thoughtful players is a deep pleasure.

Yes its supposed to be playable at the base level, but when I was playing it when it was free for a weekend, the game always crashed on me. For $1, I'm hoping I will have the time to research why it is doing that.

I haven't played it with the latest DLC's, but yeah I think so. It's supposed to be a run down set of ruins on the edge of the frontier. Very gloomy atmosphere with usually ugly monsters (and sometimes "heroes"). I really like the "light" mechanic in the game.

You got the sale notification because they typically put it on sale around when a new dlc comes out (like today a new one did).
I second the recommendation on reading Abe’s play through. Even with a heavy Civ background for me, I could never get into eu2 and it took me weeks to get used to eu3. Eu4 is even more intimidating for a new player, there is so much you can do In it. Seeing someone else’s experience helps give you a guide to run off of.
Also there are a bunch of dlc for it, many of which are super wonderful and many of others are pretty bad or have since been obsoleted with later changes. With every dlc, paradox also implements a large number of free changes too so it has had a ton of attention paid to it over the years even if you have no dlc.

They have a bundle with Rights of Man, Art of War and Common sense included for just $32. I have had deck of ashes in my wishlist for several months now, waiting for it to come out. I didn’t expect a game like monster train to precede it through which currently is scratching my deck builder itch (like slay the spire).
With my very tiny amount of time to play games these days, I likely will hold off on this one a bit while still loving monster train and having several other games in the rotation.

It's only on Epic, not Steam yet, but one of the better CIV designers put one out that's kind of a combination of CIV & CK, set in the ancient/classical Mediterranean world - Old World review (early access) | Rock Paper Shotgun (https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2020/06/03/old-world-review-early-access/)
I've got a few hours in the past couple nights - there's definitely some mechanics that could be better explained, and maybe I'll just have to fiddle with pop-up notifications because it seems like having my wife and heir both die in the same "year"(/turn) seems like it should have been a more important notification than a farm being finished - but I really like some of the mechanic changes like allowing and letting you choose which specific units use 3-4 turns in one "year", the event/personality system adds more flavor than CIV midgame, and the tightness of the timeline means that you don't end up focusing on tech development and getting OP when you make a technological leap like happens frequently in CIV.

Yeah I talked about this in one of the threads here a few weeks ago, a few of my YouTube "Regulars", like Quill18, the Yogscast, etc were beginning to play it. I liked a lot of the features that made it a bit different than Civ, especially the fact that your leader would die at some point, and your heir would take your place creating a dynasty. I would certainly be interested in trying it one day (maybe using my $10 off coupon if it goes on sale sometime soon)

I'd definitely recommend watching Vormithrax (best known for his CDDA plays) play this one, especially his Noble Difficulty run (which was his 2nd or 3rd effort I believe).
I feel like I understand what's going on better in this game than perhaps any that I've never played & only watched. That series in particular he does a great - if methodical - job of explaining what he's doing & thinking, and freely admits when he hasn't figured out something, so you kinda learn from observing while he's learning from playing.

Anyone ever play Nantucket? Is it an action type game or more of a role playing sim type game?
I was wondering if anyone played this game. I got it a couple of weeks ago on sale and really enjoyed it. There were a few quirks and things that could have been done better (a proof-reader would have been nice), but I liked the dual open-ended/storyline gameplay that let me do what I wanted and finish the main quest at my own pace.
It's definitely more of an RPG than anything action. Again, a few weird hoops to jump through (like having to cycle through certain types of crew members to unlock being able to upgrade parts of the boat), but overall, I had fun with it.

That actually got mentioned briefly in the (now 2 week? old*) episode of the Vormithrax playthrough I mentioned earlier.
He said something about that being a reported issue and was noticing enough occasional stutter that he made a save just in case. I've only seen the game legit crash once in about 12h of that playthrough tho and it didn't appear to be a leak type crash.

I've really been looking forward to it. I picked it up on GMG for $40 last week. I've played the tutorial and the first mission and it's basically old west Shadow Tactics, which makes sense considering it's the same dev.
It is a mostly stealth based game with a lot of trial and error. You're going to quick save and quick load quite a bit and they warn you about that early on.
The game play is every bit as good as Shadow Tactics so if that's your thing it's great. If you didn't like Shadow Tactics or it doesn't seem like something that interests you then this probably isn't a game to get.

The Waylanders hit Early Access and is considered a spiritual successor to Dragon Age: Origins. Early word on it is it's very much early access and meant to be a playable alpha build. It's missing art assets, animations, content, and along with the other problems you'd expect from alpha.
I'm not sure releasing a true alpha build into early access is the best call. I'm sure it's going to take a beating in the steam reviews, but it sounds like it does have a lot of potential.

I echo the comments, very much like Shadow Tactics.....haven't got far yet, but I do like what I see so far, Westerns interest me more so I expect to get my money's worth. Although I haven't purposely looked for reviews, I have stumbled across a handful and every one I saw so far had very positive things to say so that is encouraging as well, although I typically don't care what reviewers say anyways:)
If you weren't aware, free demo on the steam page, could give it a try and see if something worth your money at this point. Although certainly nothing wrong with waiting for a future sale, which I am sure will come at some point.

Between the two, Desperados III does seem better. I like being able to pause, and the layouts of the maps (at least between the two demos) were a little more clear on what my options were.
I'm definitely going to pick up one of these soon. Word on the street is that the Steam Summer Sale starts a week from now, so I'll likely hold off and see if Shadow Tactics gets a good discount (presumably Desperados won't so soon after release). All things being close to equal, though, I'll go with Desperados.

Can't access the Epic free game thread right this second so just to let you know Pathway is the free game there this week. It's an occult/turn-based strategy tactics game set (at least the first mission) in the 1930's. It's a setting not often used for games like this, and I was intrigued by it when I saw Nookrium play it a while back on YouTube. Certainly worth a look even if it wasn't free,

I didn’t enjoy it - was a very quick uninstall for me. Felt very shallow and limited - very grindy and felt like the customization was really mostly for show. Maybe it’s improved or gets better the deeper you go, but even in lockdown boredom I haven’t had the urge to retry it yet.

Picked up Elite: Dangerous a week ago after watching a friend of mine play it on Twitch. Just couldn't get the hang of combat in the training, so I returned it and figured I'd pick it up again if it came in a bundle.
A couple of days ago, what shows up in the racial equality bundle on Humble Bundle? I grabbed the bundle and reinstalled. I played it for a few hours and I'm glad I got it again. Having a ball and looking forward to playing more. Probably won't survive combat, but the exploration and flying should be more than enough for me to enjoy.

On the topic of x-com-alikes: I did play that new Gears of War Tactics that had been really well received and it just bounced right off me. On the topic of Troubleshooter, I didn't play very far, but I got the impression that you didn't recruit your own squad of soldiers, rather you picked up new static characters as a result of progressing through missions, for better or worse.
I actually felt that all the characters & their powers/skilltrees were more unique than what you could choose from in X-com, but it didn't necessarily scratch that particular itch of building a squad of your own design from the ground up.

Yeah, pre-covid I would play a decent amount of sports sims, and I could not handle all of the inactive loading time of something like Football Manager right now. Interestingly, there's still turn-based stuff that appeals to me right now, but like the feedback/response has to be pretty much instant.

I like the idea of being able to change what buffs you get each era, but actually changing your civilization each era seems like it's more confusion than it's worth.
Either way, it basically looks like an updated, human, version of Endless Legend which I loved early on. I do think with their emphasis on each faction playing differently it started to get a little overwhelming as they added more expansions and game mechanics. I definitely loved their combat more than Civ or Old World.
