1310. Strength soldier. I was KO'd once. And came close tonight.

Peter's awake...anybody in the neighborhood?
I am in Hick Village now. Just KO'd Darweene. I can take a run at Peter and soften him up as there is no way I can defeat him.

Gramm -- if you meant me (i.e. "John") I'm an adventurer not a worker. Just for clarity's sake & what not.
Sorry about that, I thought you were a worker.

I am a worker, and got dueled 2x in a row by Jimmie Jackson of Hick Village, I believe. Sucks. I can't do any questing and making money if this keeps up. :)
Anything we could do to stop it? Just wondered. First time hit really since the town decided to go on a retribution spree. Been quiet for a week almost 2 it seems like.

DeTox, if you have the relationship w/ La Vie perhaps mention to them that those guys are now attacking workers?
We can't really put the hammer to their whole town because we don't have low enough level guys ... everyone is L40+. But maybe the LaVie towns have more top-to-bottom depth and could help pass along the pain to all of Hick-land and get them to tell their leadership that they are tired of getting KO'd?
If we are going to continue the battle then the best we can do is have our duelers putting their top 5-6 guys on ice regularly. And I guess we can extend it to their duelers as well, although I've personally refrained from that up to this point and I think that is true for the vast majority of us.

I'm open to a group think here. I'm sitting (well, sleeping) in Hick Village and while Jimmie Jackson is asleep, their town founder/worker is sitting there unarmed.
On the one hand since hoosierdude was hit I'm happy enough for the cheap win, given that even unarmed the final score would probably be closer than the losses I've taken to duelers. On the other hand, if our workers haven't been routine targets, I don't necessarily want to escalate just because they've got one guy whose a bigger idiot than all the rest.
hoopsguy
09-22-2009, 07:31 AM
I'm fine either way. I think I've now outleved Jimmie so I can't put a hurt on him but I would hope that he does not get more than a couple of minutes of non-KO time for the duration of our war.
Their workers have been staying out of the fray and I'm fine leaving them out of there but it is extremely annoying how the Hicks will choose the unfair fight every time they are given the chance. They clearly are just going for as many KO's as they can possibly accrue and a large part of me wants to repay them in kind.
That said, the people who really ought to be talking about this are our workers because if it does escalate into an all-out war then they are the people whose lifestyle changes the most.

I'm 10 minutes & counting from hitting Jimmie Jackson. I'm 12 duel levels higher than him & on what amounts to my max attack build, so we'll see how that turns out with my lifetime record of 5-26 and him at 106-13.
Win or lose, I still have no love for dueling by any stretch of the imagination but my figuring this morning was this: I'm not planning to go out & do any work just to be a target, might as well shoot once & get blasted to bits and sleep 16 hours instead of just sleeping 16 hours. This whole mess has been disruptive enough that my World 7 character has now leveled past this one.

I am becoming more along these kind of lines. If I can't do the jobs I need to, then I will buy the best stuff for me dueling-wise, and go shoot up some folks myself.
I can sleep 16 after getting my body swiss-cheesed, and be glad I didn't have to tell others I was attacked again by idiots. :) I can just go after folks that piss me off and then sleep.

Well Chester Nutsack beat me 160-106.
Don't know how we missed each other, except for 1 hit each.
Right after Peter goesintight hit me, and I lost that one as well 372-365.
I was on my way to duel Chester as it was, so not really a big deal, but hopefully when I hit him the outcome will be reversed.
I've only got about 300 health left, so once my duel is over, I'll be resting in either their hotel or ours.

See, this is the kind of quality information I miss out on when my screen says that I cannot duel anyone for 48 hours :)
OK, guess I'll have to continue getting my kicks shooting others. Honestly, I can't see how this is long-term profitable for them. They are out of the dueling mix more often than they can duel, which should be slowing their character development.

So, anyone interested in coordinating hits tonight around midnight EST? I'm probably going to make sure I'm in their town the minute I'm eligible to start carpet bombing their town for whatever number of hits I have in me, crash in their hotel and then take another crack in the morning when I get up at whoever is left around (7AM EST).
Grammaticus
09-22-2009, 09:03 PM
I'm up for it. Chester and then Peter hit me earlier today. They both won, but did not KO me.
hoopsguy
09-22-2009, 09:26 PM
Math is hard - I won't be able to hit until about 1AM EST.
Does it look like all of the twits in the Hick towns are available for shooting? Anyone nestled in bed at the moment?
If we have our pick, do we want to try and hit some of the weaker sisters first and go for knockouts or do you want to go for the gusto and hit the guys who are our level? I did pretty well against Nutsack last time and it does not look like he has tweaked his gear to incorporate any more Tactics stuff into it so I'm more than willing to go for him. In fact, he is probably my first choice because he is so much better to attack than to be attacked by.
After that, Ping, Chris, and Chester are all pretty close to the same in my eyes. Peter is still a load for me, and will probably continue to be for another few levels until I can get the next round of gear upgrades.

hoopsguy
09-22-2009, 10:30 PM
Hmm, I just saw Nutsack make his way into town - which makes me think that he is sleeping in town. Otherwise not a lot of reason for him to be there, other than maybe quickly dropping off money or something like that?
I'm fine with hitting Cox as well.
We can take runs at Pete, but I'm guessing we would have a much better chance of knocking him out with one of our three big guns (DeTox, DK, McGrain) in on the attacks. I'm not wild about handing him experience if we aren't putting him out of commission for 48.
Grammaticus
09-22-2009, 10:34 PM
Yeah we need sombody that should be able to beat peter to hit him first. Lets go for Chris P. Cox. He has been awake for a shorter period of time, so he is less likely to go to sleep in the next hour or so. He is on a job branding cattle right now.

how do you cash for gear?
I am thinking of starting a new character on world 10, and if so I think I am going soldier and pure trader until I can silver mine (including equipment buys) which is easy and quick cash...from there turn over to a more traditional strength melee fighter keeping only enough trading to keep me silver mining when dueling is tired....
thoughts?

Frankly I've always been cash-poor compared to others of my level. I've spent lots of time building coffins. Also, every once in a while you will duel a pigeon out there with a bunch of cash on them...that helps, but you can't rely on it.

Ditto - by trying to accelerate through levels quickly (often via dueling) I've found that I do not have much cash for my level and that I have challenges putting together good battle gear. I've been rectifying that during the time that I'm knocked out.
Interesting that DK is still doing the same stuff that I've been doing for the past couple of levels - building coffins. I will mix that in with building railroad stations, beaver hunt, and printing newspapers in order to balance XP/Gold.

For like a month I didn't even duel and I re-speced just Charisma. Then I was leveling a lot because I finished every quest I could do except for one right now and I put everything in trading.
Now I have 12K in the bank and usually make 600 bucks a day with silver mining and Charlatan.
CU Tiger

exactly I make 200-250/hour silver mining withmy adventurer plus an average of 5 silver bars / 8 hours so I can make 2100 in 8 hours.....
Now my/my son's (it is honestl yhis character though I often tend to sit it for him when he loses interest for a week or so at a time) soldiers has been saving for some fancy boots for 3 weeks and building coffins, beaver hunting and transporting ammo (hoping for drops) have netter me about 4k in 3 weeks
So I am thinking if you went straigt to silver mining you could cash up for good dueling gear and maybe grow very quickly after a slower start. I would think the best trading clothes could probably have you silver mining with little loss of points for duelings skills

So how are people doing with this as of late? I haven't seen hide nor hair of the Hicks over the past week and I've taken my dueling action elsewhere to avoid creating any difficulties for others in our two towns.
One good thing that came out of the short-term war with those guys, for me, is that I got some very good feedback on changes I needed to make on my character to be a more successful dueler. I've upped my Appearance significantly and been doing more "high money" (relatively speaking) work so I can purchase gear with better Tactics values.
Other than that, I'm splitting my time about 50/40/10 on work/dueling/quests. My old timeline was to do quests when I was KO'd by a Hick, but now that they are gone I'm having a hard time finding the motivation to go hunting for wood or fools gold when I could be getting real money to help me towards my next 5,000+ purchase of items.

Haven't seen them in several days either, which is good since I probably haven't done more than 4 hours worth of work in a day in several days either, and haven't remembered to put the character back to sleep for a second shift when he was idle.
Truth is, I think that whole mess kind of started winding the game down for me. Keeping the character asleep for 16 hour stretches wasn't very compelling & once the routine was broken it's been hard for me to really get back into it.

Sounds like the Hicks' collective attentions have moved elsewhere...I haven't seen hide nor hair of any of them lately either. game has lost much of its fun when I ran out of missions to do. Been pretty much doing only high exp jobs for the last couple of weeks now, alternating between two or three jobs. I even put my guy to sleep for a few 16 hours periods since I couldn't care enough to switch to a new job when the one I was doing was at 72% motivation.

I still take care of DanKD as it only takes a few seconds to log him in and set a couple jobs (I never have to switch gear for my top jobs) after doing what I need to do for Huckleberry. But if I only had DanKD I would probably forget to log in a lot. Dueling is still fun though and I finally cracked the top 100 in dueling rank. I actually had some goals for DanKD which kept the game interesting for him, but I met them all (top 100 level rank, and some others)

What is the plan for building up the resources in the new town? In the short-term I could use a bit more storage in the bank as I'm trying to save up for a couple of items that are 5,000+.
I understand that there are likely to be other higher priorities, and that is fine. But I figured it made some sense to begin these discussions so we can all plan accordingly. If Bank is near the bottom of the list then I'll probably just pop in on the town once a week or so to make deposits.

Hi,
Could you send me an invite so I can do some shopping please.
Thanks.
So here's my reply,
Evan, typically players don't accept a shopping invite without having the cash on hand to pay the clearly stated fee. We also do not accept anyone for anything more than temporary residency for shopping purposes. I'm inclined to be patient for a couple of days as we are not currently tight on residents but I cannot emphasize strongly enough the temporary nature of your residency, so please conduct your business (including the deposit) as quickly as possible.
I'm currently planning to give him a couple of days before he's kicked. First time I've actually seen the shopping invite thing get abused since we started playing.

Actually it isn't necessarily permanently lost, as there are costs associated with attacking other forts (according to this (http://www.the-west.net/help.php?article=fort_sizes) anyway) as one example. I have to think sooner or later someone is going to take a shot at our current fort and I kind of figure that eventually we'll want to take a crack at someone else's in reply. I'm darned sure not in any rush about that but I've always sort of expected it would come up eventually & am pretty surprised it hasn't already.
Also my last shopping trip to La Vie Boeheme I was not charged as they said the town was done and they didnt need the money.
If someone else has gotten the same deal from them, I'd be quite content to reciprocate going forward, that's why I asked & I appreciate the confirmation that it has happened at least once. I thought I remembered something mentioned about it but darned if I was going to search through the whole thread to find it. Failing any further comments one way or another I'll probably just run with a freebie for this guy as a payback for yours & we'll deal future requests case by case.

Glad you posted. It was Shearing Shed that I had in the back of my mind (that wasn't charging us) not La Vie XYZ. Which leads me to look 'em up, which leads me to realize that they're apparently full sister towns & not just affiliated town (like us & them). I think one of the bigger flaws the game has at the moment is the big gap in quests once you get into the 50's levels. I'm several levels from being able to do anything new at this point & that definitely hurts after being "gain skill for quest X" oriented for so much of the game.

It would be cool to catch him, My dueling motivation right now is about 70%, so I'll probably drift back a few spots before jumping up again.

So I think that I'm going to explore some of the ground blazed by Huckleberry McGrain and start testing myself a little more regularly against the Rock Ridge towns. Between them and the Sunday towns, they have a high enough concentration of Dueling Level 65+ guys to keep me from having to bounce from town to town to town.
I'm just not sure how well this character will take the response if they decide to send out a posse and string me up.
Danny
10-17-2009, 10:24 PM
Hoops, something I found that works well. At the end of your dueling period after hitting a town or two really good and your motivation slips to 80% or so, duel until you get knocked out on purpose. This keeps you from having to worry about retaliation for the next two days and by then the town has forgotten about you.

I can't seem to do more than three duels before I lose too many health points anyway. Do you guys rest in the town for a bit so you can keep going before you bug out?
hoopsguy
10-18-2009, 10:19 PM
Most of my forays are for 2-3 fights, but if I'm a couple of squares away I'll crash in another hotel so I can get more duels for the long trip. I usually go in a hotel that is next to the town I'm going to shoot up (with people who are not in my level range) so as not to alert the inhabitants to put on their battle gear.

All of my points are in strength and I am a soldier, so i have around 16-1700 depending on what gear I have on, so I am usually able to do several duels in a row depending on who I duel.
Also, I am pretty close to catching Peter now for duel rank. Another week or two and I should be ahead unless he starts going off with duel points.
Danny

Should be passing Peter in the next two days. I just went to duel him and knocked him out, so Im only 200 xp down and he is out of commission for two days.

Awesome work, Danny. I found myself on the wrong end of a knockout against a Sunday soldier I attacked yesterday. I was unpleasantly surprised by how hard/often he hit me for a guy with no Tactics bonuses in his items at all.

BrianD
10-27-2009, 07:58 PM
You shouldn't need to be a member of El Dolado to fight in the battle. Just travel to the fort and choose to be on the defense. If you aren't going to be able to take part in the battle, choose a starting position near the flag. You may not get any action, but you'll be a good last line of defense. It is probably the route I'll have to go.

I hope I got things done correctly. I put my guy in one of the corner towers, where it seemed he had the highest points allocated. Then, ala Battleship, randomly clicked on one of the squares in a close target area.

When I am selecting my target area for the battle what do the little icons means, like the two tomahawks, the shield and whatever the other thing is. I dunno where to aim still. I was aiming near the entrance but is that ideal or what?

Grammaticus
10-28-2009, 06:19 AM
We need one of our leaders to ask La Vie about defensive strategy. I think we should go with the cluster/phalanx defense. It maximizes our situation. Everyone places their icon in the center of the fort. This requires us to move less and means offline players are less of a hinderance. It also requires the attackers to be more mobile and it makes it more important for the attackers to be online so they can move thier icons in to attack.

They didnt get much money from me, but, frustrating nonetheless.
