Snark aside, these things aren't meant to protect specific women. It's meant to be a safety-in-numbers exercise. If their use becomes widespread, and the would-be rapist *knows* that, does he roll the dice anyway, or does he decide it's not worth the risk? If the odds are one in a hundred that he's gonna get his dick caught in one of those things, then the unfortunate woman probably ends up a mortality.

If the odds are one in three, is he still willing to take that risk?

Couple tangential thoughts; while I don't know that I see an increase in murders being a logical outgrowth of the use of these things, it wouldn't shock me if more foreign objects started getting used as a way to "test the waters," as it were. But, again, I think that depends on what effect the existence of the anti-rape condom has on the mental calculus (such as it is) of the offenders.

Additionally, I have to think that these condoms have their best chance of success when paired with other self-defense methods. If you use it as a sort of passive-aggressive defense, I'm not sure what good ultimately comes of it. But if the women using them also have other self-defense methods available to them, whether it's some martial art, a taser, mace, or something else I'm not thinking of, then the anti-rape condoms end up being a last line of defense, of sorts. The idea is that eventually the attackers get conditioned to recognize that this prey - pardon the pun - has teeth.

If they start associating resistance with an unpleasant surprise lurking, then maybe the resistance alone eventually scares the would-be rapist away.

But, again, that depends on how widespread the usage of the anti-rape condom becomes.

Granted I don't know what goes on inside a rapists head, but I imagine they fall back and look at their junk in shock for about 68 hours straight. This gives the victim ample time to escape.

Yeah I don't get it either. Can't they just remove it and still proceed to do whatever they wanted? I haven't read the whole thread, but does the thing hurt? I heard only a doctor can remove it from the woman? What if she has it inserted but then wants to screw some dude. Does she have to tell the guy to wait while she finds a doctor?

I thought I read somewhere (maybe it was South Africa or just Africa in general) that it's not unusual to see someone being gang raped on a bus. That's freaky.
