View Full Version : Economy hitting home...

I am sure others have already dealt with the tough times the economy is going through with layoffs and all that stuff, but is suddenly hitting home - and really fast. Apparently my company has been discussing it for over a month, and didnt want to tell anyone that they were doing it. They finally sent out a note today that layoffs would be happening, and they would happen today. We have over 1100 people in my company, over 50% of which are sales, and in IT alone (where I work), where there are about 50 people, 4 are getting cut. Two alone in my work area (of about 15) Pretty shitty...apparently we will find out later this afternoon. This could turn out to be a pretty crappy day.

Thanks guys.

My year anniversary is March 10th, so obviously not that long. Shortest time in my area, but according to my supervisor (who actually gathered us up this morning to tell us all how the process will work this afternoon even though "the bigs" told her not too - she is fucking awesome) they didn't follow anything like that "shortest tenure, most seniority is safe, etc" So who knows.

Good luck. Appleton hasn't really felt the economy much yet, but we are starting to catch up to the rest of the country. Hopefully your job will be secure.

We had the grim reaper go through here last Thursday- it's a tense and eerie feeling for those of us not involved (I'm a contractor for another company). I can only imagine what it's like in the boat you're in. :(

Good luck

Yeah, we just axed 4 contractors in our area, and it is crazy the amount of work most of us have, and to think they could just get rid of 2 of us. I really hope it isn't me, but of course I don't really want it to be anyone else in this area either. Let a salesperson or two go - we have plenty of them!

Sorry to hear this Packerfan. As a mortgage broker i can definitely feel your pain (no i did not do the idiotic loans that helped get us into this mess). I have my fingers crossed for you, even if you are a Packerfan.:)

Well, my awesome supervisor just came in and told me that my job is safe...now I am just pulling for everyone around here. I know we are losing 2, I just wish them the best (and I hope that my supervisor makes it through this too)

Thanks for the well-wishing, all :)

Which company PF? I live in Appleton as well. If you want to PM me it that would be cool, or if you don't want to tell me at all, that's fine too :)

Glad to hear your job is safe.

(and I hope that my supervisor makes it through this too)

Yeah, I had something like that happen once in a reorg at a previous job. Manager came around and she only ended up giving a pink slip to one person, only to promptly tell everyone in a meeting later that day that she was gone.

She had mentioned that they had been talking about forcing early retirements on some, and she just turned 60, been here over 20 years, she is pretty sure she will be one of them if they do that (which seems likely)

A relief for sure PF. I'm in IT as well and we have slowly been losing people over the past two years.. who knows what the future holds for the 4 of us left.

It's crazy because I heard from a guy I worked with at my last job (which was from May 07 to February 08) that they cut people in like October of last year - and he was one of them. I was only there about 4 months longer than him, so I probably would have gotten axed too. Just glad to have avoided it here - I really enjoy this job.

Good luck.

My company holds it over our heads constantly. For the past six years or so they have consistently said "just be glad you have a job" and have trimmed to the point where it would be near impossible to eliminate any more, but they continue to talk of eliminating positions. Only recently had "the economy" become the convenient excuse.

I'm on a call where they're doing that yet again currently. Ever since I've been here, it's pure "trim the fat" mode and "be glad you have a job" whenever something is taken away. And they wonder why morale has gone through the floor in the last couple of years.
