So should we start enforcing a time limit tomorrow?
Yes...i thought i wouldn't have to be a stickler about it till at least the 5th round.

Yes, 2 1/2 hours is bad enough, but 1 in 6 is absurd. We should be able to do a few rounds per work day.

We've done one pick in six hours.
If people can't bother to pick and/or send a list in round one, what will they do in round nine?

Seriously though, I missed my pick by minutes before I logged off and went to bed last night.

Overnight is one thing, people do have lives and need to sleep. Tasan was logged in here during the day and hasn't checked back or posted anything. I dunno. I'm here often enough that it really doesn't make a huge difference to me what we do.

Okay i'm going with what I feel is a limited category with my first pick
1.10 Mr. Belvedere-Housekeeper/Butler/Nanny - He's the rock star of hired help. The show was named after him. How many of those are there? Plus, with a fairly poor supporting cast, he doesn't keep me out of many other good selections.

1.11 Lassie - Pet - THE TV Pet. Lassie was on for 20 years and has since had various rebirths on TV and movies. Lassie loves her owners, saves lives, and to this day - many decades after her creation - is instantly recognizable by people of all ages.

I can think of at least one more show where the show is named after the Housekeeper/Butler/Nanny. I think you got the premier pick for Housekeeper/Butler/Nanny, but there was very little strategy in the pick.

wade moore
01-15-2009, 07:35 PM
2.2 - Theo Huxtable - Brother - Like his father at the top of the 1st round, Theo is the model for his category. He was a well behaved son (most of the time), took care of his sisters, and gave Mom and Dad just enough of a hard time to create laughs. The scene mentioned above with Cliff and the fake money is possibly the most memorable Sitcom scene of all time, and it doesn't happen without Theo.

I dunno. I can think of one other (maybe the same as what you're thinking), but there are many more that come close to a "top pick".
Just some commentary: who was Lassie's master? I don't know. Who else was on the show? I don't know. I think that my same reasoning that applies to Mr. Belvedere applies to this pick.
Take for example, Cliff Huxtable. There were a couple of other picks there that were removed by that selection. Lassie and Mr. Belvedere were the shows. Maybe in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rounds this strategy would work, but for a 1st round pick I think you left a lot on the table for other players.

The only thing you can knock-out from other players is actors, not TV Shows.

Additional rules thrown in to make it needlessly complicated
1) Once you draft a family member, pet, location, nanny, or anything from a TV showyou cannot draft another member from that same show.
Don't think you can draft Theo, wade.

Clearly it was Timmy, who was constantly fallling down the well. :)
I think people need to realize the rules. Cliff Huxtable removes NO ONE from that show for other people. It merely removes any character played by Bill Cosby.

Yeah - it can cut a lot of ways. I worry that when you have someone from X show and so do 3 other people, does that hurt your roster for voters? It might - a risk I was willing to take here, but a risk nonetheless.

As does expanding to all shows, not just sitcom family shows. It seems to no longer be just sitcoms, and not be only "family" shows. Basically you can pick from any tv show that ever aired and the only thing that can be blocked is an actor/actress/voice artist.

Hmmm....I think the contrary actually. I don't look at Theo as a risk at all, but more of a "hedging your bet" type guy.
One of the things I discussed with my wife was whether to draft on pure entertainment value, pure icon status, or general cohesiveness. I'm still a little undecided on which way to go.

I can't really defend the situation here, but you can't change it at this point, I don't think. No matter what a group gets punished, and I don't think it should be the one that was paying attention to all the posts over the ones that just skimmed.
Personally I think Dr. Sak should have been more iron fisted and stuck to his original intentions (but you guys know I'm a jerk :) ), and barring that he should have updated the first post, but, ohwell. :) We are where we are and this draft will still be a lot of fun.

2-3 Montgomery Burns/Bad Guy - This was a tough one. The Simpsons offers up so many avenues, but I felt it was best used in Villains, since sitcoms have so few. This also eliminates a few "out there" late choices for other categories, since the voice actor, Harry Shearer, does many other side voices on the Simpsons.

With the first pick in the Television Family Draft, Karl selects:
1.1 Mom-Lucy Ricardo, I Love Lucy
One of the biggest sit-coms of all time, Lucy was a shining light in the often dark wasteland that sit-com moms normally inhabit. She could pull off physical comedy, vaudeville nods, and musical comedy.
As hard as it was to choose, I felt this pick was necessary to take, because in the world of tv sit-coms, a good mom can be hard to find.
1.2 Stewie Grifiin - Bad Guy / Girl / Baby
Stewie is a great sitcom character and is the quintessential lovable villain. Plus now the other good characters from family guy and some from American dad can not be drafted, so I have the market cornered on those shows :). I chose Stewie over someone like Peter because in the dad category Peter is middle ground, but I feel Stewie is at the top of the villains. Plus, he is my favorite character on the show.
1.3 Archie Bunker - Dad
Perhaps the greatest character ever created for TV. He was much more than the gruff malcontent that so often came through. Most people have some part of the character that they can either strongly identify with or know someone just like him.
After careful consideration, and in going with a more modern theme, we here at team DeTox have determined that there is no better best friend to a lead character then ..
1.4: Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzereli [Best friend]
Who doen't know the Fonz?
1.5 Cliff Huxtable - Dad
Gotta go with Cliff, one of the funniest and most likeable dads in TV history. My favorite Cliff moment is in the first episode where he teaches Theo how to live like a regular person, using monopoly money as an example.
1.6 Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) - Brother
Alex epitomized the Reagan era and sprung Michael J. Fox onto the big screen in the Back to the Future movies.
It's sort of fitting that as the Cosby Show closes out with pick 1.5, Family Ties follows with pick 1.6.
From his list Maple Leafs Selects:
1.7 Homer Simpson - Dad
1.8- George Costanza- Best Friend
Best show ever.
Dick Solomon, 3rd Rock from the Sun 1996 : Father
John Lithgow plays the commander of an alien survey team. While not actual relatives they take on the roles of a typical american family and the hilarity ensues. Lithgow is a comic genius and plays the campy Commander dorkmobile to the hilt.

1.12 - Mom : June Cleaver, Leave it to Beaver.
2.1 - Bad Guy : Louis DePalma, Taxi.
2.2 - Theo Huxtable - Brother - Like his father at the top of the 1st round, Theo is the model for his category. Picks so far. I have to say that I went back to page 2 of the thread and saw where Dr. Sak opened it up to all genres of television. I think the later picks got that but the beginning ones didn't. I started out wanting it to be a sitcom draft then Wade went off about how sitcoms are 30 minute shows. I didn't want someone to pick a character from say "The Office" as one example, where another poster has a shit fit because The Office is sometimes an hour. So I took away the sitcom thinking that it could be from shows that are an hour just so that there wasn't that argument.
Honestly I just wanted this to be a fun draft. I love TV, a lot of people here do too so I thought it would be a fun idea. Now I am remembering why I dont like these things.

I appreciate you running this. I didn't mean to make a big deal of it, was just surprised. I think most of us are sticking with the sitcom theme anyway.

Lol. I love these things to death but the one thing from previous drafts is that it has to be clear and unambiguous. Still doesn't prevent anyone from pulling an Imagine but while voters have the final say, it has to be clear to the participants in order to have the interest to continue.

Goddamn it people, why do some folks have to make a simple thing so damn complicated. The first two lines of the original post laid out in very clear terms what this was supposed to be:
Okay I'm a little bored and had some time on my hands so I decided to think up another draft to host on FOFC. There are a lot of TV Junkies on the board so I've decided to host a Sitcom Draft.
The rules are pretty simple, draft the best sitcom family, and see if the FOFC Community thinks that you have the best family. All judged by them.
The bolded parts are pretty damn simple and clear. A draft based off of sitcoms. The categories to draft were family members/friends/enemies/pets. Nowhere did it say only 30 minute sitcoms, nowhere did it say "limited to family based sitcoms".

As long as the voters know it's not a sitcom draft, i'm fine with that. I specifically shifted my strategy when the label was changed.

What we were referring to is that I guess on page 2 it was changed to all of television and not just sitcoms. I missed the whole arguing about 30m vs 60m shows, but I guess the result of that was the change.

I'm drafting based on sitcoms, I don't care what the rest of you do. Its silly. I mean, come on, who cares if the Office ran a 45 minute episode once in a while. It falls into Sitcom in every respect. Opening this up just made it too easy to assemble big famous roster.

I missed that whole thing. That doesn't make sense, a sitcom is a sitcom whether it lasts for 30 minutes or 3 days. I know you were trying to make everyone happy, so don't worry about it. This is supposed to be fun, so people can draft however they want. Sitcom based or not.

Is there a better locale for a sitcom than a tropical island? I think not. Everyone else can have their urban scene, suburbia, or idyllic countryside. My family is living large on the shores of Gilligan's Island. Just watch out for the occasional headhunters.

I don't want to continue this argument too much, but in my defense Sak ready WAY too much into what I was saying. A special 1 hour episode of a sitcom doesn't make it no longer a sitcom. My issue came in when people were talking about people from the Soprano's or from Dallas.. or from Reality Shows... I was stating my view that our definition of Sitcom should not include shows like this and should be 1/2 hour situation comedies. The example of "The Office" was just silly, and not even close to what I was referring to.

3.9 Wisconsin, Location
Wisconsin you say? Yes, Wisconsin - mainly that of Milwaukee (or just across the border to Chicago). You've got Happy Days (http://www.everything2.com/title/Happy%2520Days) and all of its spin (http://www.everything2.com/title/Joanie%2520Loves%2520Chachi) offs (http://www.everything2.com/title/laverne%2520and%2520shirley), Married with Children (http://www.everything2.com/title/Married%2520with%2520Children), Step by Step (http://www.everything2.com/title/Step%2520by%2520Step), Dave Nelson (http://www.everything2.com/title/Dave%2520Nelson) from News Radio (http://www.everything2.com/title/News%2520Radio) and more recently, That '70s Show (http://www.everything2.com/title/That%2520%252770s%2520Show).
I think good pick, but for some reason it doesn't have the chutzpah of the Cheers Bar or Gilligan's Island.

Go look up the list of sitcoms that take place in Milwaukee/Chicago area.
Compare that to 1 for Cheers (Boston) and 1 for Gilligan's Island (the island) They are distinct locations yes, but they aren't the real heart of sitcoms or TV in general. IMO of course.

3.10 Roseanne Conner - Mother
In the 90s, she defined mom for a generation of kids who grew up lower middle class. She cared about her kids and loved her husband, but was definately no June Cleaver, she was actually real.

Gah. Great pick. I debated for a while between Edna Garrett and Roseanne. I should've gone Roseanne.

I'll review the thread but I thought this was discussed already and that wasn't a factor for locations, but either way, not a big issue.

To me she defined mom. While my mom wasn't near as crude as she could be, they shared a lot in common and that show just rang clear and true to me in so many ways.

I'm pretty sure Wisconsin was just mentioned as a childhood home of the mom, not a central focus of Married with Children, so I think it can pass.

Have you looked at a map? Its a regional thing. I took Wisconsin, no problem there, but when you look at how many sitcoms took place in the chicago/milwauki area its humungous. I'd say its pretty easily justified myself.
Limiting myself by Wisconsin only benefits me anyway, so why the fuss?

I hope we aren't going to get that picky on locations because on Episode 62, for 2 minutes, Bill and Bob were watching a Green Bay Packer game so, therefore you can not take Wisconsin.
MASH would eliminate San Fran, Ottumwa, Fort Wayne, Maine, Crab Apple Cove, Boston, Korea, Japan, Hawaii....

I think that was more about being confused than anything else. RendeR claimed MwC so people assumed it took place there.

3.12 : Ed Norton (Best Friend), Honeymooners : A Best Friend has to be the subject of the leads jokes and barbs, in on his schemes and steal the occassional scene. That was Ed Norton.
4.1 : Benson (Butler/Maid), Soap : Change from the always helpful maid to the sarcastic side. Plus, he later become a politician. Edna just opened a freakin restaurant and Alice just massaged Sam's meat.

4.2 - Geoffrey (Fresh Prince of Bel Air)- Butler - This category is going to be dominated by characters from before the 90's, if not far before. Geoffrey is a modern, hip in his own way, butler. A good Butler not only keeps an immaculate house, but gets in a good barb here and there on the family without them even knowing it.

Samantha Stevens is the second pick I don't know - what show is she on? Also, I didn't immediately get Arnold, but that's only because I'm not used to hearing his last name. Nice pet pick, but my #1... by a lot... is still on the board. :)

4.3 Al Borland-Home Improvement - Best Friend of the Lead Character
Al and Tim had their arguments, but whenever Tim needed anything, Al was there for him, and vice versa. Al defines the perfect "friend of the lead" in that he's always there, with either help and love or a fitting zinger to put the lead in his place. Plus, you can't think of the show and not think of him.

Oh come on...most famous female in the history of television, and she had little Ricky! What does she need to do? Breastfeed on the air?
