We have an issue where an owner is not able to continue this season after 5 weeks. 12 team league that's been together about 10 years.
(And yes, it is a very legit reason...I may start another re: what happened)
So, what is the best way to deal with an 11 team league, and an abandoned team.
As poll above says, we've come up with 3 possibilities, all of which not all 11 owners will agree which is the best choices.
1) His team received zero points the rest of the season, so teams playing him get an automatic win--this would favor teams that play him twice.
2) CBS league, so the 'Best Lineup' feature exists. However, it is based on week to week averages, so will but players on bye weeks in his lineup.
3) Dispersal draft.
Which is the fairest choice?

Just have someone manage the team and put in a reasonable lineup every week. It's pretty simple to determine 95% of the starting lineup. Don't pick up any more guys and just put in what seems normal.
If it's a bunch of people you have known this shouldn't be difficult.

That was a thought, have the commish set the lineup. But if/when someone lost, they'd gripe. Sad but true, there are about 3 of those types in the league. That's how the best lineup came about, remove all bias, until we learned it included bye-week players.

I would just have the commish make the call and if these three guys don't like it they can drop out too. No reason to bend over backwards for what sound like dinkdongs.
I mean really, you only are talking about 1 or 2 "decisions" a week at most. And that's usually the #3 wideout or something that is pure luck anyway. See Kevin Curtis on the bench when he amassed his entire stat total for 2007.

A modified version of option 2 -- best lineup, adjusted by the commish to replace the bye week players. If the commish faces that team, the come up with some committee approach (assuming there's no vice-commish or similar).
Now that answer assumes that the exiting owner was active for all of the weeks prior to his departure. Now if he had neglected the team for several weeks prior to his official exit then I might have to re-think this (as the team would actually be more competitive with him gone than with him present).

I would think CBS best lineup would account for bye weeks, that seems like the no-brainer solution to me.

Find a source for weekly cheatsheets -- there's a ton out there -- and just use the best lineup based on that. No decision making to argue about, just the best player at each spot.

Forfeits are possible with a unbalanced schedule if you are taking the same number of teams from each division. Then just make the points 1-0. You can't do a forfeit going forward because it is not fair to the teams that played him when active or if you are taking just the best X teams in multi division leagues because more teams would get a free win.
Best lineup through CBS replacing bye weeks would appear to be the best although, at some point, injuries and players that stink that would have normally been replaced by an active owner will give teams playing him later a bigger advantage possibly.
The best is to get someone else to just manage their team.
A dispersal draft would be horrible because you are giving the worst team a top player and the best team the 11 best player on his team... that would cause more issues.

My league has the exact same problem. We found out after a few weeks that the guy whose team that only had three players in the lineup couldn't play this year because of NCAA rules.
Anyway, a few teams already got free wins. In the 18 team league, not every team plays eachother, so not every team will get the free win over the course of a season. Regardless, the Commish decided to do a dispersal draft in reverse order of standings after week 7. Of course, the commish and his brother are two of the three worst teams, but whatever...there is no good way to deal with the situation.
The good news is my team has already played the worst teams, so I won't have to worry about getting screwed, plus I get the free game later in the season.
I voted for forfeit, but then realized that wasn't the status quo like our league (I wanted the lineup to be left as-is since it has been that way since week 1). I'd either do the best lineup option or have someone run the team.

Nope, actually doesn't. I checked it out to be sure. I guess it's based on avg points per week, because I ran it for mine, and it added Willie Parker and Travis Henry to my roster, both on byes week 6.

I think this is the winner so far!

Week 4 he was inactive (did not change lineup from previous week) but we didn't know yet that he'd be done for the season.
Week 5, a handful of us knew, but no decision made until this week.
He went 1-1 in those weeks.

One thing we have done with an odd number of teams is the team he's playing must beat the average for the rest of the league.

I actually took over a team last year in a keeper league that went ownerless for half a season prior to that. What this league did was appoint a guy from each division (in this case, 3) and who weren't playing "team X" that week to select a starting lineup and they also put their heads together during supplemental drafts throughout the season to make any selections that this team had as to not cripple this team for me, the eventual new owner.

We had this problem a few years back, where an owner bailed last second before our draft date.
The 14th team simply became known as "The Average". Where, whoever playing that team would go against the average of the total points scored in the week. It wasn't ideal, but still made a competitive week each week. We were also aware "The Average" could potentially win the pool but luckily it finished middle of the pack (go figure).
