Just curious if many people here have tried this. This past weekend was my first time and I cant recommend it enough. I was in WV doing the upper part of the Gauley River, which apparently is one of the top 10 in the world. It was just a blast. In a summer that I skydived and took an awesome hike on Mt. Rainer, the rafting was definitely the highlight of it all.

I have just finished uploading the DVD from the trip on Youtube. It just shows the 5 class V rapids we did, but it gives a good idea of what its like. If you are curious Im in the raft with 7 or 8 people next to my buddy in the yellow and black wetsuit.

Part 1- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EIzJ_7EI78 - contains a nice intro
Part 2- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-1GzEq0Vgc
Part 3- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCe1g5OJBV8

If anyone does try the New river or the Gauley river in WV I cant recommend Rivers Resort enough, great people and a lot of fun.

I have rafted the Upper Gaulley/New River about 4 or 5 times. I had a blast every time. I love it. I haven't gone in about 5 or 6 years, which is a real shame.

One time we went a day after nigh Biblical rains the day before. They almost had to shutdown the river because the water was running too fast. It was just under "safe" limits and we headed out. We had to stop after each rapids to pick up those who were tossed from their various rafts. It was madness.

I've done several rivers in California (Merced, Tuolumne, Kaweah, North Fork Stanlislaus) and one in Italy (Valsesia). I love rafting, it is a huge rush. We have group that calls ourselves the Whitewater Rafting Kamikazes. My website has records of our travels: http://www.thegreatcornholio.com/rafting/rafting.htm

Rafting is awesome - I've done the Skykomish, Sauk, Tieton and Wenatchee rivers in Washington and the Deschutes in Oregon. Always a great thrill.

I'm now ready to start learning whitewater kayaking.

The people in my raft were actually talking with our guide about the rafting that year. Sounded crazy.

Glad to see others enjoy it as much I did. I will be back on the Gauley river next year and hopefully also find a second place to check out.

Me and some college buddies did the New river in WV several times. A real blast, but I recommend going in the summer when the water is warm. Or else prepare to freeze your butt off.

Done it in India, Arizona, and PA/WA (They have a rock there that turns more boats than anything else on the Eastern Seaboard). Loads of fun, as long as your raft has people you're cool with.

If I recall correctly, it was Memorial Day weekend of 2000. A guy on another raft ended up with a chipped tooth and a mouth full of blood after the first rapids. It sort of set the tone for the rest of the day.

I forget what outfit we were with, but it was a pretty nice place. They offered the rafting, horseback riding, and a bunch of other stuff. The cabin we stayed in was super-sweet. Very comfortable and it had satellite TV. We were able to watch playoff hockey and we also caught Ron Tugnut's 72 save performance on some classic sports channel.

Good times!
