Preseason News and Notes: 2005
Coaching: No coaches decided to retire, nor were they lured away again this offseason. That means QB, K and OLB/ILB are once more left below the potential they could reach due to Deep South scout deficiencies. Even with a move to 80 in Prestige with our great 2005 season, we seem unable to lure any good coaching prospects to Ft. Worth. The good news is injuries should be low again this year, even if several positions cannot improve as well as we may wish, and freshmen are low in starting estimates.
Schools hiring new coaches include: Amazingly, there were NO schools hiring a new coach. I have never seen this happen before.
Player Reports:Nobody left and nobody lost a girlfriend.
2004 Yearly Revenue: $15,940,000, another 21% increase from the previous year. Unfortunately, this increase is not noticed in the weekly recruiting budget.

Freshmen Roundup: 2006
TCU is proud to introduce the newest Fightin' Horned Frogs. As Coach Purple is fond of saying, "I hate freshman. You stake your life, your career, on a bunch of 18 year old kids, and if they suck, well, you're SCREWED."
Coach Purple has said he plans on redshirting the entire class, depending on future injuries. The newcomers are, in order of their signings:
Burnett, Freddie, C. He is currently rated at 32, with future estimate of 75.
Herek, Gilbert, DE. He is currently rated at 16, with future estimate of 100.
Lawton, Wayne, RB. He is currently rated at 52, with future estimate of 95.
Wynn, Harvey, QB. He is currently rated at 18, with future estimate of 86.
Buckner, Myron, WR. He is currently rated at 46, with future estimate of 82.
Gardner, Marco, OT. He is currently rated at 26, with future estimate of 69.
Hellestrae, Jorge, OG. He is currently rated at 34, with future estimate of 75.
Parton, Gus, CB. He is currently rated at 44, with future estimate of 74.
Burgower, Dale, S. He is currently rated at 41, with future estimate of 100.
Sanford, Gino, DT. He is currently rated at 29, with future estimate of 100.
Madison, Vinny, QB. He is currently rated at 22, with future estimate of 77.
Alexander, Pete, walk-on FB. He is currently rated at 16, with future estimate of 58.
Bradley, Darnell, walk-on WR. He is currently rated at 18, with future estimate of 51.
Seider, Kyle , walk-on RB. He is currently rated at 13, with future estimate of 13.
Guerino, Lewis , walk-on OG. He is currently rated at 8, with future estimate of 47.
Lewinsky, Walt, walk-on TE. He is currently rated at 26, with future estimate of 59.
Sullivan, Bill, walk-on K. He is currently rated at 0, with future estimate of 0.
As Coach Purple peruses his newest class of Horned Frogs he notices, aside from the fact that there are not very many scholarship players there, that several of them are ready to step in now and contribute. However, all will start the season on the redshirt list to gain weight and learn the system.
It is good to see that Wayne Lawton is already at 52 with a high final estimate. That ensures he will be ready to take over after this season should Graham Elliot decide to leave for the NFL.
Both QBs are low, but that is assumed to be the case these days with the scout we have and the low Offensive Coordinator QB rating.
Hopefully we'll never need them, but the walk-on group is not bad, either.

Texas Christian Projected Starters: 2006
Offense:
Quarterback: Though not great, we now have 2 QBs that are rated 'good' where we have never had even 1 in Coach Purple's tenure before. We plan to start Hidy because of experience, though he has a much greater interception frequency than Palmer. Palmer is also a better scrambler, so we will not hesitate to make a change in any game if needed. We would like to see Palmer step-up and take the job, but if he isn't ready, Hidy will do.

Player Pos Elig CurEst FutEst
Hidy, Joey QB Sr* 46 46
Palmer, Ike QB So* 46 78

Running Back: With Elliot and Patton, we have the top rated duo in college football. We plan on giving Kelvin more carries this season to see if he can contribute and lighten the load on Elliot, especially given the number of receptions Graham makes and the kick returns he has, as well. We just pray neither goes pro a year early.

Elliot, Graham RB Sr* 87 87
Sampson, Corwin RB* Jr 20 20
Patton, Kelvin FB Sr* 81 81
Browning, Randal FB So* 38 44

Tight Ends: Guthrie has made an awesome leap since his redshirt year and is a better pass catching TE than Boone as well.

Guthrie, John TE So* 78 78
Boone, Gary TE So 53 74

Wide Receivers: We have no great stud here, but with a WR by committee we should do well. We would like to throw more, but with Elliot and Patton running behind the O Line, why put the ball up for grabs unless we have to.

Childers, Karl WR So* 74 94
Twisp, Ellis WR Sr* 64 66
Pauly, Gino WR Jr* 48 86

Offensive Line: With the center, guard and tackle starters rated #4, #1 and #5, respectively, in the nation, our line is the strength of the team at this point. As you can see, we also have decent reserves at OG and OT in case of an injury. We should be able to run on most anybody.

Bernstein, Jimmy C Sr* 84 93
Coles, Jose C Jr* 28 81
Bishop, Cornelius G Sr* 97 100

Kickers: Boo had a horrible year last season, missing 14 fg attempts on the year. Britton has never punted in a game yet. In other words, the kicking game could be the main weakness on the squad. Of course, ther is nothing we can do but hope Vincent bounces back to his 2004 form when he missed only 5 kicks the entire year.

Texas Christian Projected Starters: 2006
Defense:
Defensive Line: Ackerman and Aceves are the only 2 graduating seniors on the starting 24. They will be counted on to end their careers with the same impact they have had the last 3 seasons. With the 3-4 defense we employ, they will be the keys to stuffing the run, along with the linebacking corps. If they play well, we will win games. Back-ups are far worse, so injuries will be catastrophic.

Secondary: The corners are very good but their endurance is not good, which means Norwood may play more than we would like. Recruiting Outlook: 2006
We have plenty of slots to fill this year, but next year will be a bare year for numbers available because of the number of redshirts from Coach Purple's first recruiting class. We should have about 22 slots for the next 2 years and because we lose only 2 starters to graduation, we plan to give out 11 scholarships this year to leave 11 again next year.
Our players are reaching the levels needed to compete with the big schools in some areas, but not in others. We do not really have pressing needs like in the past, but the holes that will be coming in 2008 are immense if we don't start the preparation now. If players leave early for the NFL, we will be hurting even more in those areas. G, RB, C and FB are all potential positions players could leave early after this year.
With this in mind, we will try to fill some spots based on needing to replace priority positions soon where a large drop-off in talent is seen.
Scholarships open: 18
Graduating Seniors: 6, 4 on scholarship
Travel Budget/Week: $2,723
Highest ranked Idolizer: Jose Hampton, TE from Longview, TX. #232 recruit, #7 TE. AthPrep 15.
Highest rated Frog: OG Cornelius Bishop, Red-shirt Senior- 97 current.
Recruiting Needs: 2006
QB- we are tired of the QB shuffle. With Ike Palmer around for 4 years, we will go after the best QB and let the chips fall.... No back-up recruit will be offered.
RB- back-up to Elliot is now on board. Walk-on sub will be the only effort.
FB- after Kelvin Patton, we have pretty much nothing. Now is the time to try to get a good one.
TE- third string is a walk-on, but not a bad one. We could try for our TCU idolizer since his 15 AthPrep will not be so bad with years to get ready.
WR- have 5 that will be back next year, including a decent walk-on. We need at least one every year to build-up the passing game to complement the running.
OL- not a pressing concern. Would like a OT at least, and an OG wouldn't hurt if he is good enough. Took a center last year when we weren't going to, so you see that if presented with a high quality player, we will switch courses and go where we need. We have as yet not changed anyone's position, but that could change depending on what is available.
K/P- we have a punter who is young but not very good and a kicker with 2 more years who missed 14 FGs last year. If presented with an excellent prospect, we will use an offer here.
DL- top DE and DT are the only graduating starters. DE will be a position we go for. A DT is not priority if we stay with a 3-4 defense.
LB- we need one of each, definitely. We have 4 OLBs back next year, but other than Marvin Washington, they are all mediocre at best as of now. ILB has been a disappointment to this point so we need to look at a quality player to come fill the gap.
CB- we have 2 very good starters, but both are maxed out already. Gus Parton is red shirting but estimate already is 44. Another one is always welcome.
S- we have 4 good safties but that is all- just good. One is redshirting freshman Dale Burgower who is at 41 now. We need another stud to bolster the improving defense.
Recruiting Priorities: 2006
[1] Linebackers- we seem to have trouble getting quality here. Our reserves are weak and any injury could very much cripple our efforts.
[2] Defensive End- Riddick Ackerman is graduating and leaving noone to fill his shoes at the moment.
[3] Fullback- we have noone to replace Patton with any skills at this time. If he leaves early, we need a freshman who could possibly step-in now.
[4] Safety- with our weak scout, Deep South, at secondary, safeties do not get very good head-starts on their career. We need to find a high AthPrep recruit if we can.

Predictions:
Coach Purple was not as sure of the season possibilities as he was last year. "For the first time, both our non-rival, non-conference games are against teams with higher rankings than TCU. Plus, we are back to playing Cincinnati and we miss Houston. That is an almost sure win to a toss-up right there.
"On the other hand, we have the best team we have had since I came to TCU. This makes for an interesting year, to say the least. Because our depth has not matured well, injuries, or the lack of same, will help determine the success the Frogs enjoy in 2006. With this in mind, I think we should be at a level now where we beat the teams we are clearly superior to, whereas in the past it was not particularly true. However, I still do not think we are on the top 25 level, or perhaps even close. We have too many positions where we are merely good and top schools are excellent.
"I think we will be improved, but the tougher schedule may preclude us reaching the top. I predict an 8-3 season and a minor bowl game for 2006."

WEEK 1
The Game:
TCU ( 0-0) (-10) @ Louisiana State (0-0)
Attendance: 67,700
82 degrees, Sunny
First Meeting
Baton Rouge was rocking as 67,000+ drunk Bayou Bengal fans whooped and hollered as TCU had its largest audience with the game broadcast on TV2. The fans roared their approval as TCU was unable to move the ball following the opening kickoff. P Scottie Britton had a superb debut with a 54 yard punt to the LSU 7 yard line. The Tigers failed to move and Marty Dotson returned a great punt 23 yards to the LSU 40. 3 RB Graham Elliot runs and TCU was in the end zone with a 7-0 lead. The crowd was quieted, and they stayed that way throughout the game as the Fightin' Frogs tore the Bayou Bengals to bits.
TCU lead 20-7 at the half and QB Joey Hidy played a great game to keep LSU from mounting any bid to get back in the game. A couple of 20+ yard TD strikes, one to WR Ellis Twisp and the other to TE Gary Boone put LSU away early and the Frogs chewed up the yardage, totaling 539 on the day to LSU's 215.
The only negative on the day was K Vincent Boo starting the new season off as he ended the old, missing 2 FGs on the day. Coach Purple has upped the practice time from 13 to 15 in an effort to cut down on penalties, and it paid off as TCU had only 6 for the game after averaging 11 a game last year. A solid effort, all-around, to start the 2006 campaign.

Recruiting:
We took a flier on the #1 ranked player in the country because we said we would go after the best QB we could and Moe Stephens is scouted 92 with a 99 AthPrep. Unfortunately, Moe is from Hawaii, so Coach Purple doubts we have a shot.
This is an ungodly PITIFUL year for recruiting Texas players, so we may have to saturate the high Academic players with offers and see who comes-a-callin' when visits occur. It's a good thing we planned on offering only 11 schollies this year, instead of 16, because I don't see 16 players that are very good that TCU has a great shot at. Until we reach 90 or so in Prestige, the Oklahoma State, Rutgers and Mississippi States of the world can get pretty much anyone they choose that we are both persuing. We will, of course, still work our asses off to get the best we can.

TCU leads series, 1-0
TCU took the opening kickoff 82 yards in only six plays to start the scoring, and did not let up until they had a 38-0 lead in the 4th quarter. QB Joey Hidy hit WR Gino Pauly from 27 yards out to get the Frogs on the board.
In the 2nd quarter, Hidy hit WR Karl Childers with an 11 yard Td strike and RB Graham Elliot ran 72 yards for another score. K Vincent Boo finally made a FG to bring the first half to a close with the Horned Frogs leading the Buckeyes, 24-0.
Hidy threw 2 more TD passes in the 3rd as TCU poured on the power, leading 38-0 before State scored a meaningless 4th quarter TD. The game gave the Frogs great momentum heading into the Iron Skillet game against SMU next week.

The Game:
TCU (2-0)(-6) @ SMU (0-1)
Attendance: 16,500

TCU leads series, 4-0
As always, no matter the rankings or records, the battle for the Iron Skillet was a tense, tough battle between two schools fighting not just for bragging rights for the year, but for Prestige and recruiting aid in the area.
Following a punt by SMU on the opening series, the Frogs moved swiftly down the field on a 9 play, 79 yard drive with QB Joey Hidy hitting FB Kelvin Patton on a 21 yard scoring strike and a 7-0 lead.
RB Graham Elliot scored from 30 yards in the second quarter and the Frogs seemed to be on their way to another laugher over the Mustangs.
It was no laughing matter, however, as SMU kicked a FG with 7:19 left in the half, then shut TCU down and forced a punt. The ponies broke through and got the block, recovering the ball at the Frog 16 yard line. After a penalty, Mustang RB Lenny McGregor ran through TCU's defense for a 21 yard score and a 14-10 halftime score.
TCU toughened-up in the second half, however, never letting the Mustangs closer. Elliot was injured in the 2nd half and the Frogs began relying on FB Patton, who scored in the 3rd on a Hidy 10 yard pass, then put the game away in the 4th, scampering over from the 4 to end the suspense. Another tough Skillet battle belonged to TCU, but, as always seems to be the case, SMU put up a great fight.

Recruiting:
Well, QB Moe Stephens, the #1 ranked recruit, has no visits planned yet, though that doesn't really make us any more hopeful that the Hawaiian would come here.
We have 2 FBs contacted, both from Deep South territory. We have contacted 8 of the top 10 recruits, though none are from TX, so that's not good, either. Plus, of the 3 Texas boys we have contacted, only one is an Academic emphasis player.
So, we will be contacting second tier players next week and hoping and praying that this doesn't turn into a disaster. Lots of recruits we contacted are Academic emphasis, but they are scattered all over the country, and many of them are secondary Prestige, which we cannot compete with.

Recruiting:
This week we have #1 ranked QB Moe Stephens with visits to Hawaii and Maryland. Since Moe is an emphasis, Distance, I don't know why he chose Maryland, since it is more than 1000 miles further away than TCU, but he'll probably go to Hawaii anyway, but we can hope until the end. Jumbo Harvey is also a QB, and the #2 national recruit. He is scouted 86++ and AthPrep at 94 so we were all excited for a while. Then Coach Purple looked at his 952 test score and said, "Shit, so much for him."
The highest rated LB is an 82++ with AthPrep 79, except he is emphasis Prestige, so blow him, too.
TE Jose Hampton is a TCU Idolizer and scouted 90+. He is an academic qualifier, too. Unfortunately, he is a 15 AthPrep, but we might need to take him anyway.
It is too bad we don't need 7 or 8 offensive lineman because all of the good ones seem to be Academic emphasis, but we don't need that many. At least we should be able to land a good one or two there.
Anywho, more news, and maybe a visit or two, next week.

WEEK 5
The Game:
Cincinnati (0-2)(+31) @ TCU (3-0)
Attendance: 40,300
62 degrees, Rain
Cincy leads series, 2-1
Despite the rain, TCU fans came out 40k+ strong to cheer their Frogs on to victory. With RB Graham Elliot feeling the effects of his injury and having the worst day of his career, QB Joey Hidy and a stout defense led the charge as the top ten ranked Toads tried to keep their perfect season alive.
The defense was the star of the game, holding the Bearcats to 6 first downs and 114 yards of total offense. OLB Jamal Jurgensen, CB Marty Dotson and S Rondell Reikens had interceptions on the day as TCU forced 9 punts by Cincinnati.
The effort was not wasted, despite the good efforts of the Bearcat defense. TCU racked up 28 first downs and 449 yards offense but Cincy was able to hold the frogs out of the end zone and, after making 2 first quarter attempts for a 6-0 lead, K Vincent Boo proceeded to miss 4 field goals the rest of the game.
In the fourth quarter, following a weak punt, CB Dotson made a nice return, setting-up the Frogs on the Cincy 29 yard line. QB Hidy hit WR Karl Childers for 18 yards on first down, then hit WR Ellis Twisp with an 11 yard Td pass to finally salt the game away with 3:19 to go.
It wasn't pretty, but hopefully the pressure of the day will help down the line as the Frogs play what should be 3 easy wins before the showdown with Memphis in week 10.

Recruiting:
Well, the Frogs have the good news of their first visit lined up in TE Bernie Culjat. Bernie, from AL, is #34 nationally and the #1 ranked TE. He is scouted 87+ with an AthPrep of 66.
TCU also has the bad news of losing out on 6 recruits already this year, including 3 offensive linemen and 2 linebackers. The ranks of prospects is dwindling and not much help is left to contact in terms of academic qualifiers. All our FB candidates are visiting other schools now, and our linebacker prospects, the #1 recruiting need for the year, have all scheduled visits with other schools except one, Daryl Hank from AR, an OLB ranked #119 nationally.
We are still praying every week that this will all work out, eventually, because it looks bad right now.

The Game:
TCU (4-0)(-27) @ UAB(1-4)
Attendance: 30,800
65 degrees, Fair
TCU leads series, 2-1
"GODDAMMIT!!" That was all Coach Purple could get out of his mouth after the game. Losing to the 114th ranked team in the nation, that is all there is to say. QB Joey Hidy threw 5 interceptions, including one ran back 63 yards for the first score of the game. Every drive that was mounted, and with 461 yards of total offense, there were many, seemed to end in an Int. or a missed field goal. The offensive line seems to be in a funk, as Heisman Trophy winning RB Graham Elliot had another lousy day.
QB Hidy threw for 353 yards, but took 50+ attempts to do it as TCU fell behind big, with UAB scoring on a 76 yard run to take a 24-3 lead in the 2nd quarter. TCU tried valiantly to overcome its many miscues, but the Blazers had enough grit, and the clock ran fast enough to thwart the try to keep the great season alive.
Now, the Frogs must try to regroup and figure out the problems they are now faced with, as they fall from 1st to 5th in C-USA with six games left.

Recruiting:
Well, the good news is we received our first commitment from TE Bernie Culjat and we have another visitor in DT from TX, Bernie McCreadie.
The bad news is we are not doing very well with any athlete whose name is not Bernie.
We lost another 8 recruits to other schools, including both the FB we were after. 4 more offensive lineman turned TCU down, meaning all the great players we only needed to get 1 or 2 from are pretty much gone.
We are now dipping much lower than in previous years just to find people to look at in case the trend continues. Maybe Coach Purple has been lucky in other years, or maybe it's just a bummer of a year so far. Maybe all the good ones will start to magically visit and commit soon, but if not, 3 or 4 years from now, we could be in for a poor time in Cowtown.

WEEK 8
The Game:
Tulane (3-3) (+15) @ TCU (4-1)
Attendance: 43,100
80 degrees, Warm
Tulane leads series, 2-1
TCU gave gift after gift to Tulane in the form of 13 penalties and 3 interceptions, all by back-up QB Ike Palmer, who entered the game in the 1st quarter when QB Joey Hidy had an ugly on the field case of tonsilitis. Tulane managed to amass 20 first downs despite gaining only 203 total yards, in large part due to the Frogs largesse.
If the Green Wave were happy to receive, they also tore the heart out of the Toads in the 4th quarter as Heisman Award winner RB Graham Elliot went down for the year at the end of a 15 yard run. The score was 28-7 at the time, but Coach Purple was not sure of the outcome with Palmer throwing Int's all over the place and the recent inability of the Frogs to play football as they should.
Suffice to say the win was great, but at what cost. East Carolina next week will now be a bigger struggle and Memphis in week 10 may be too big a reach unless players step up to fill in the holes. It will be an interesting, if painful, sight with no #39, Elliot, leading the team onto the field.

Recruiting:
We have another recruit committed to the Horned Frogs. He is not a top guy, but hopefully with 88 AthPrep, even if he never makes a high Estimate, he can fill in as a capable back-up.
There are 16 recruits visiting Ft. Worth now, including #1 ranked QB Moe Stephens from Hawaii. Moe is a Distance/Academic emphasis so he should be headed to Hawaii, but we have at least a glimmer of hope with his visit.
7 more players chose other schools this week, as well. Not only are the number of visits low, but we do not have very many even considering TCU aside from the 16 visiting. We will do what we can an, again, start praying to Dutch Meyer for guidance.

The Game:

Attendance: 8,000

TCU leads series, 3-0
TCU held the Pirates to 9 first downs and 142 total yards in the rain with a meager 8k fans in the stadium. Nothing was very pretty as the Frogs sloshed their way to a 14-6 halftime lead.
The running game averaged barely 3 yards/carry without RB Graham Elliot, and QB Joey Hidy being injured forced Ike Palmer into a lead role he is both unready for and unaccustomed to carrying on his shoulders. While he had a decent game, he threw 2 more interceptions and was sacked 3 times, despitr the fact he was supposed to be a better runner than Hidy and the coaches put in a more QB rushing offense.
While K Vincent Boo was missing another Fg, the defense held E. Carolina to 41 yards in the second half to ease the way to victory. It does not appear TCU is ready for the showdown with Memphis next week, but we can always pray for help, which Frogs have been doing a lot this year between injuries and recruiting lapses.

Recruiting:
We have, as expected lost out on Moe Stephens. He did end-up going to Hawaii as we assumed he would. Instead, we picked-up another QB, Donald Quinn from CT, who is the #39 ranked recruit. We were not going to go after any other QB, but with the troubles we have had this year- Hidy's injury and Palmer not playing worth shit, we decided to try again for a good QB.
We also have two other players commit to TCU, a FB and a CB. The quality is not what it has been in the past, but we cannot sit around and take nobody with the amount of positions that will be open in 2 years when the Elliot class graduates.
9 more players chose other schools, and we are down to 13 visiting players with ZERO others considering. We may not even make the 11 offers we were planning to give if things do not improve.

The Game:
Memphis (6-2) (E) @ TCU (6-1)
Attendance: 46,000
63 degrees, Fair
Memphis leads series, 4-0
TCU played before the first sell-out in the Coach Purple era. Unfortunately, the noise and the atmosphere were not enough to lead the limping Frogs to victory. Memphis crushed the life out of TCU early and 3 turnovers and 3 more missed field goals were too much to overcome. TCU managed but 10 first downs and 241 total yards. The score was 24-0 before S Rondell Riekens returned an interception 49 yards in the 4th quarter for a TD to get the 0 off of the Toads scoreboard.
The Frog defense played valiantly, but too little offense and terrible punting kept them on the field for over 10 minutes longer than the Tiger D.
With high-flying Army next in line for the Frogs, the 2 year run off bowl games is in doubt. "Rise to the occasion, or we don't deserve a bowl," was all Coach Purple could say.

WEEK 11
The Game:
TCU (6-2) (+2) @ Army (7-1)
Attendance: 34,600
66 degrees, Sunny
TCU leads series, 4-0
TCU played as an underdog for the first time this season as they took the field in West Point today. The game began as though the oddsmakers knew what they were doing as Army took a quick 3-0 1st quarter lead on a 23 yarder. However, on the ensuing drive, the Horned Frogs went 53 yards in only five plays, with RB Corwin Sampson doing the honors from 6 yards out for a 7-3 Toad lead. Defense ruled the rest of the half and 7-3 was the halftime count.
Army went 73 yards with the 2nd half kickoff to regain the lead, but TCU countered with a drive of its own, moving 68 yards in but 2 plays to regain the lead, 14-10. A 56 yard completion to WR Karl Childers got TCU in range, and QB Ike Palmer hit TE John Guthrie for the Td from 12 yards on the next play.
Army QB Donald Springer then threw interceptions on 3 consecutive possessions to CB J.T. Compton, ILB Hardy Singleton and ILB Billy Joe Florence. TCU turned the turnovers into 14 points to take a commanding 28-10 lead. The Cadets tried valiantly to respond but could muster a score with but 0:31 left in the game and, when the try for 2 failed, the Frogs had the huge win in a battle for the second spot in C-USA.
On a sad note, another All-Conference Frog fell in battle as senior DE Riddick Ackerman was lost for the remainder of the year.

WEEK 12
The Game:
TCU (7-2)(-12) @ Southern Miss (3-6)
Attendance: 31,700
59 degrees, Rain
S. Miss leads series, 3-1
TCU played poorly to start another game as S. Miss had a 60 yard kickoff return to get the game started. The Golden Eagles then went 32 yards for a touchdown and, on their next possession, kicked a field goal to take a 10-0 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.
At this point, Coach Purple threw a fit and TCU woke up, going on to score the next 4 times they had the ball. Sandwiched around another USM field goal, the Frogs went in to half with a solid 24-13 lead.
The second half was all Frogs as S. Miss was held to 235 yards for the game and RB Derek Jewell scored on runs of 16 and 23 yards to close the scoring.
TCU finally took care of an inferior opponent, something they need do again next week against a pitiful Louisville team in order to secure the second C-USA bowl position as they are tied for second with Army, whom they have defeated.

The Game:
Louisville (1-9)(+29) @ TCU (8-2)
Attendance: 42,100

Series tied, 2-2
TCU held Louisville to 226 total yards and 10 first downs in pasting the Cardinals. Up 21-3 at the half, the game was never in doubt as RB Corwin Sampson became the first Horned Frog other than RB Graham Elliot to rush for 100 yards in eons. The Frog offense has been energized by the return to form of QB Joey Hidy to the lineup following his 3 week stay on the injury list.
A nice game all the way around to end the regular season. Now the wait for a bowl bid with TCU tied for 2nd in C-USA with an Army Cadet team that was defeated by the Frogs two weeks ago.
Final Score: TCU 38 Louisville 3

Recruiting:
No news to report at all. In fact, we are down to the last remaining visitor, DE Alex Peters. As previously reported, we are expecting him to enroll unless there is some bribery going on by another school.
There are plenty of walk-on candidates considering TCU for the fall and we expect decisions in a couple of weeks.

Recruiting:
We finally got through the potential bribing and landed DE Peters to end our active recruiting for the year. This class is obviously a step down from past years, but we did the best we could under the circumstances. We will need some of these players to be ready in 2008 when the bulk of our starters will have graduated.

For the 3rd year in a row, TCU was out to win a bowl game for the first time. Coach Purple finally had a team he thought could compete with the better teams in any conference.
With RB Corwin Sampson, a walk-on junior with an estimate 60 points below injured star RB Graham Elliot, the running game figured to take a back seat to QB Joey Hidy and the much improved passing attack. The offense ended-up surprisingly balanced as Sampson played with desire and grit, churning out 123 yards and 2 scores while Hidy threw for 235 yards and one Td. Even K Vincent Boo came through, making both his field goal attempts on the day.
The defense came to play as well, limiting Hawaii to no drive over 27 yards and forcing 7 straight punts in the first half. The Frogs looked impressive, securing a 17-0 halftime lead on Td runs by FB Kelvin Patton and Sampson. Hawaii tried to make a game of it in the 2nd half, at one point closing their deficit to 20-14, but TCU was just too good on this day, scoring twice more in the 4th quarter to salt the game away.
The Frogs concluded the year with 10 wins for the second time in a row. Coach Purple was very proud, saying "We overcame several key injuries during the year, as well as today. Next year could be special if everyone comes back in shape and these terribly unlucky injuries go away.
Final Score: TCU 33 Hawaii 14
Players of the Week: Congratulations
RB Corwin Sampson 20 carries for 123 Yds, 2 Td
OG Cornelius Bishop 5-11 Block, 1 SkA

This is not exactly the kind of class that will leave anyone panting for a return of fall and the first whistle of the new season. Not only are they not highly rated, overall, but they are pretty small as a group. The only player at a good weight for his position, really, is TE Bernie Culjat. Both the FBs are puny and the linemen and linebackers are small, as well. Unfortunately, we still have to live with them , or most of them, for the next five years.
We are hopeful next recruiting year will be better in terms of Texas, and academic, recruits.

To anyone who reads/follows Cowtown, Arise. A TCU-TCY Dynasty (hello?) I will be out of the country until March 24th and unable to continue until then. Take Care, and 2007 should be a banner year for the Horned Frogs.

I am back in the USA and will continue the dynasty shortly.

Thought I'd drop in and say you're doing a good job. I did enjoy the national anthem humor quite a bit during your early years. I know how it feels to be unsure of whether folks are reading on my threads, though they've definitely been more chatty on my 2003 thread than on my 2002 one (look for the GO TCY 2003 thread). Thought you'd also like to know that in my universe TCU won CUSA in 2002. :)

Thanks, Wolfpack. I never know how much stuff to put in cuz it gets to be a lot of work going through all the crap to post the extra stuff like you do in your dynasty. Being in C-USA, my Frog team got pretty good MUCH faster than I thought they would due to lucky (to some extent, at least) recruiting years, and I started wanting to play more to see results, which meant less time for reports and ther extras.
Plus I am REALLY lazy. :)
I appreciate your reply.

I just want to chime in and say that I have been following along as well. And I agree with Wolfpack, the anthem humor early on was great. I enjoyed those little bits just as much as the rest of the dynasty.
Keep up the good work, mrushh, and welcome back.

Putting in all that extra stuff is time consuming, yes, but as I do everything in notepad and copy it over to IE, I generally have a template in-place. The work then comes from digging around for the information to fill in the blanks. But, I feel it is worth it from the standpoint of giving people something to look at other than my struggling football team. I wish I had done a bit better on the national reporting my first year. The whole chase for the BCS slots was very interesting to watch to say the least.

The Class of '06 is quite small, but was very important to the growth of the Frog team in its drive for respectability. 23 times these players were honored for on and off field accomplishments during their TCU careers. We expect to see one or more in future TCU Hall of Fame classes. The Frog Club salutes the class of '06. Good luck to y'all, the newest Horned Frog Letterman's Club members.
