View Full Version : Curling Overrated or Not Vol. 1: Randy Ferbey

Randy Ferbey has long been considered one of the best curlers in the world, achieving a 2nd place CCA ranking in 2004/05 and 2005/06. Yet losses like his team suffered at the 2004 Nokia Brier and the 1999 Alberta provincials have tarnished his image somewhat.
Is he deservingly so highly rated, or just a chump who has gotten lucky a few times?

No way man, 4 Brier titles as Canadian champion? How can he be overrated? (Sorry, being Canadian I actually know this...shudder.)

Oh man, I really feel for you. I felt dirty after just reading his wiki bio.

I think he rented a red Chrysler LeBaron from an Alamo rent-a-car in Saskatoon back in '96

I think he is overrated, the best player on that team is the third (Dave Nedohin (or however it's spelled)).
Curling is underrated. This past olympics, I watched it for the first time ever. I found it to be compelling. That said, I have know idea who the hell you're talking about. That is all.

Actually, back in the day, David's wife was a pretty good reason to watch curling, very skilled on the ice and quite cute as well.
I had to go with over rated because of the fact that it's Nedohin that's been making all the big shots and winning/losing games for them for quite a while. Furbey hanging on in a non sweeping role while they vote for what shot to throw kind of defeats the purpose of him being the "skip".

Meh, Nedohin used to shop at the Safeway I used to work at, other than the odd Eskimo or Oiler player/coach coming in, that was as close as we got to celeb sightings here. Add in the fact that they've represented our province numerous times, it's hard to avoid gleaning some knowledge of the sport. I'm not a huge fan of the sport, but I don't dislike it either.

I think this is why he is over rated. A big part of being skip, is throwing skip stones, thats why Russ Howard, Wayne Middaugh, Jeff Stoughtan were so good. They could really save or sink their team with the shots they make or miss. If you're the skip and you're not throwing skip stones, you only get partial credit.
On a beyond curling geekery note have you heard that one rink's impression of Vic Rauter, priceless.

They did show the montage about Bemidji quite a bit. But damn that was fun watching.

Maybe a few, sure it's the mutant form of the sport, but we usually have at least a few with *some* talent in town.

A skip throwing rocks as a third is goofy as hell in my books. Dave is the man on that team. Also, Randy's personality rubs a lot of people the wrong way...he's very cocky and isn't shy about telling anybody and everybody about how good he thinks he is. Not my favorite guy.
With that said, I heard him on a local sports talk radio show several months ago and he was pleading for volunteers to help him out with the local little league baseball association as they were desperate for coaches at all levels. Glad to see a guy as busy as him making time for this kind of stuff.
And, about Dave...I was on a plane out of Winnipeg a couple of years ago and sat a couple of rows away from him, his wife, and their two kids...his wife is indeed a looker...well done, Dave.
