View Full Version : Idle Thoughts..

So, I'm bored as hell, entering 293 Colleges for a OOTP2007 project (trying to do a NCAA Template with all the Div 1 colleges and team names), and these are some of my thoughts.
1. If I was ever the commissioner of Sport, I would have a few rules, like If your college has a variant of "X State University", X better be a State, otherwise, you're a poser (that goes for you Wright State, Cleveland State, Chicago State, etcetera)
2. It's good to have a mascot/team name that's different from the rest. God knows we have enough team names like "Wildcats", "Tigers", "Eagles", etcetera. But try not to go too way out there. Let's put it this way, if I have to google your mascot to figure out what the hell it is, it's too obscure. For example, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
...
Ok, WTF is a Chanticleer?
I have to look that one up and find out that it's a literary character (a rooster) from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Yeah, there's being unique, and then there's just being freakin WEIRD.
C) Chicago State shouldn't be booking their tickets for Omaha. The team is 0-23 on the year. this included being swept in a four game series by a team that has five total victories on the year.
D) Considering the team was Hawai'i-Hilo, and that Chicago State had previously been swept five straight games by the University of Hawai'i, I think I'm jealous of Chicago State, and it goes a long way to explain that 0-23 record, I mean, 9 games in Hawai'i? Never mind swinging a bat and running, just walking with a sunburn from playing 9 games in Hawai'i has to be painful!
More thoughts if I get bored later

The calendar for college baseball is really weird.

yeah, a lot of the cold-weather colleges go down to Florida to play their games against Florida colleges during spring training

Here's a thought, Foz.
How many road games per year do you think the Hawai'i schools really have to play? I mean, weather like that, isn't that almost a perma-HFA for them? "Uh, yeah, UH, why don't you come on up to Ann Arbor for a few games this February?"
Can't see it happening.

On the same token though sack, why isn't hawaii's football team crawling with more talent.. I know if two middle of the road d1 teams offered me scholarships.. and hawaii was one of them.. the other one wouldn't matter :)

Are you planning on this being a feeder league?
If so, how many teams are going to be in the league it feeds?

It's just a template right now, all the colleges and conferences are in there, I just need to go in and edit them for cities/ colors now
To be honest, I was doing it more because to test out how colleges are supposed to work :)

Takes about 20-25 seconds to sim a day (Just the college games), and I was hoping to pair it with a standard setup down the road

I agree with this sentiment, which probably goes some way toward explaining why we're not D1 athletes.

How about those Banana Slugs!
UCSC is one of the most awesome universities ever!
It's just too bad I got rejected for transfer by them :( Out of state needed a 2.8 cumulative GPA and I wasn't quite up to that standard when I applied.

Has anyone been able to figure out how to stock rosters in a college league (or high school league for that matter) so that players only play for four/five years? When I try to set age limits (14-19 for HS) or (18-23 for college) the game does not generate enough players to fill rosters. In order to proceed, I have to go to game setup and click on the 'fill rosters with fictional players' option. Of course, this then means that players outside the age range I specified make up the majority of the roster.
I've only tried to create a high school league as my main league in the demo so I'm wondering if things eventually equal out after a certain period of time. Are you bothering with this in your template Foz?

It used to be the mascot for Rutgers before they became the Scarlet Knights way back in the day. Part of why they changed it, is because people were calling them the Chickens.

I set created player ages to 17-19 in my league, and it generated more then enough players I'll look for a maximum age when I get home

I think it's like what a lot of California campuses have, where a fair number of them are Bears or Bruins or have bears for their mascots. South Carolina is the Gamecocks and CC is a smaller school in the USC system, so they probably adopted Chanticleers to have the same mascot (generally) as the main campus in Columbia. Heck, it wasn't that long ago that Coastal was a junior college, I think. We used to always drive by it in Conway on the way to Myrtle Beach.
Fishing about a bit at CCU's website, it looks like I was correct: About the Chanticleer (http://www.coastal.edu/about/chanticleer.html). They evidently switched mascots in the 1960s to more closely identify with the Gamecocks.
Edit to add: upon further reading, it looks like CCU is not actually part of the USC system, but is a totally independent state university (makes sense since they aren't USC-Conway or something like that) and it looks like they debated changing the mascot when they broke away from USC.

I think there's a lot more of the non-state X than of the state X, and I think the non-state X's make perfect sense. I'm really not clear on what your argument is there... in general, it's a state university that's not part of the University of Y system.

Oh, and I do empathize about going through all the college teams and so forth. I've been busy rating out the NCAA D-I teams for a quasi-tabletop game (Above the Rim, written in VBA and Excel). Too many Tigers, Eagles, and Bulldogs in this country.

The facilities are asstastic. No money gets put into buying new weight equipment, better lockeroom, etc...
