View Full Version : FOFC Geography Challenge: An Odds vs. Evens Game
WSUCougar
02-20-2003, 11:00 AM
Scoreboard: +0.2 Odds
Game Format:
> Both teams start in the same location, but after that they part ways.
> Destination categories are pre-selected, so the current locations of each team have no bearing on my choice. Also, all game rulings are final. In other words, no griping!
> When a category is posted (by myself), both teams will post an answer, striving to travel the shortest distance (as the crow flies) to a place that fits the category. The team that selects the closer destination wins that round (gets +1 to their score).
> The round ends when both teams have posted an answer.
> Important: Additionally, a time bonus of +0.1 will be awarded for every ten minutes that one team’s post is ahead of the other team, regardless of who wins the round. Speed is important!
> Ordinarily, the first post by each team will count as their answer. However, if the other team has not yet posted, you may override a previous answer by your team (including your own) by posting OVERRIDE at the top of your answer post. Remember, the later time of the override post will be used to determine the timing bonus, so plan your tactics accordingly.
> No editing of answer posts!
> The first team to get +20 wins the challenge.
> Example of play: Both teams start in St. Louis. WSUCougar posts “a state capital” as the destination category. The Odds post “Jefferson City, MO” at 12:00 p.m., and the Evens post “Springfield, IL” at 12:21 p.m. Springfield is a tad closer, so the Evens get +1, but the Odds get a time bonus of +0.2 to their score. So overall, Evens get +0.8.
= = = = = = = =
To begin, someone (it doesn’t matter which side, since it applies to both teams) should select the starting location from a city with an NFL franchise.

2) Petersburg is on 81 or 64, isn't it?

1. Well, in the rules it doesn't say anywhere that a player can't answer more than once, but I certainly wouldn't object if we did add that rule.
2. Yeah, Petersburg is just off of 95, that's why I was trying to override it...
WSUCougar

Regarding the rules, overrides are only valid if the other team has not yet posted. However, you can override yourself.
I've got Petersburg on I-95, so that'll count.

 :o :(
Geez, guys, sorry...I screwed it up again. Double-checking my process I mistakenly selected Bloomington, Minnesota instead of Indiana. Trying to go too fast, I guess.
I have a suggestion. Let's start over with a couple changes in the game. Here are my proposed changes:
(1) I give you the upcoming category one destination ahead of time. In other words, you will choose your current destination knowing what your next category is going to be. This will add a lot more strategy, and will result in less luck and "gimme" answers.
(2) The first team to post gets a 0.2 bonus.
(3) The time bonus is increased to 0.2 per 10 minutes.
(4) Each team gets one override regardless of what the other team does, but you can only override your team's first answer within 10 minutes or the first answer is locked.
Comments? I'd like to hear from a couple Odds and Evens each. We'll pick it up tomorrow depending on the response.
