View Full Version : My Christmas Gift to FOFC

As some of the old-timers may remember, I used to be a professional landscape photographer in the 1990s and had a business called Photography of the Land. I had a couple of gallery showings but mainly did business selling framed prints to individuals and offices (to help pay for all of the traveling and shooting I would do). Just recently, I found my old PhotoCD where I had my photos copied to and as a gift to FOFC, I would like to share some of my more popular ones (in smaller jpg format):
"Colorado Colors"
This was my best seller. Most people who had been to Colorado in the fall know of the golden aspens but you would surprised at the variety of other colors as well (not as much as New England though) and I think this photo showed that pretty well. This is from the Sneffels Range of the San Juans, where I spent many, many autumns photographing.

"Autumn Storm"
Here is another Colorado autumn photo, this one from my Limited Edition Collection using a large format camera. You can't tell from this small image but it is one of those photos that you can spend endless hours looking at all of the different details.
http://home.adelphia.net/~ouray2/images/storm.jpg
"Tetons Dawn"
One of my favorite photo experience was getting this shot in the Tetons. I woke up early and saw that the mountains were obscured by low clouds over the river valley. But just as the sun came up, the low clouds settled down in the valley and opened up the peaks.

"Bristlecone Pines"
This is my absolute favorite photo. I camped high in Windy Ridge near Hoosier Pass in Colorado and got this shot in the first dawn light. I love the deep red colors and the details of these ancient trees.

"Tetons Reflection"
Here's another Tetons photo, this time taking down in the river valley at Schwabacher's Landing.

Incredible pics, Bucc. Which large format camera did you use, a Leica?
I've been a huge Ansel Adams fan for as long as I can remember, and I love these kinds of pics.

Just a question....did you ever think of selling those pics as puzzles?

Thank you for the kind words. I hope the images shows up ok here.
cartman: I believe it was a Leica 4x5 (both the Autumn Storm and Tetons Reflection were taken with it). I sold it about 10 years ago so I don't quite remember. I do remember, however, the incredible amount of time to set up each shot and with the cost of the sheet film (plus processing), I was nervous about getting each shot right.
Eaglesfan27: I still have all of my slides (whether 35mm and 4x5) but had not done anything with them since I put out my catalog in 1998. I wouldn't even know if one can get prints made (since it's all digital now) or how much they cost. Thanks for asking.

Colorado Colors and Bristlecone Pines are my favorites. Excellent shots. I can see why the first one sold easily, but the second one has a harsh dramatic feel to it. Would make a nice framed picture.

I like these photos a lot--especially bristlecone pines. Anyway you can link to the larger versions? They look very small at 1600x1200.

I forgot that some would have display resolutions higher than 1024x768. Sorry about that.
Here's a larger size
Edit: probably best to just post a link

Speaking of reflections, here's my favorite New England photo. I spend about 2-3 hours getting this shot - waiting for the right combination of light on the trees and relative stillness in the water to get the reflection. Sometimes the water would calm but the sun would be behind the clouds or I would get the light but water would be choppy.
For what it's worth, the Colorado Colors photo and this New England photo were taken about 5 days apart!

Photoshop is just another tool to use for pics. Ansel Adams used all sorts of methods to enhance and embellish his prints, and I'm pretty sure he would have had Photoshop in his stable of tools if he were still around today.

But I think there is one distinct difference. Embellishing a print to bring out colors or tonal values is just enhancing what is there. Photoshop and digital manipulation can go further in adding things that are not there. Artistic expression gives you the freedom to do whatever you wish (like merging two negatives together or adding in elements to an existing image) but as long as you represent that and be truthful about it, that is cool.
But with digital photography and Photoshop (and the like), it is too easy to "create" a scene. For example, in the Tetons reflection shot, I can fairly easily create the reflection in Photoshop if it wasn't there and then show them here to have people admire the shot I took. I will not do that and you can be assured that the photos above were taken "as is" (with the only manipulation coming from brightening them in order to save it to jpg format so they can be quickly displayed here).

No, it's like everything else I have done and still do in life, I never could devote all of my time and resources required to take it to a higher level.
ps. That photo was one of my earliest effort, before I had decent equipment and skills. It was the last photo I took before I left North County for grad school back East and wanted something to remember my years on the beach.

Yeah, back in his day, Ansel Adams had to use MSPaint.
Edit: BTW... my wife said I had to take you off my blocked list long enough to check out those photos. Nice work, Bucc. :D

Higher level? I think you are underestimating what you could already do. Some of your early 90's pics would still do well in any time period. And it is probably much easier today to get things done than it was in the past.
There are a number of self-publishing routes, and while it still requires some of your time and effort, it is still easier than it was 10 years ago now that there is print on demand.
Anyways, if you had stepped away from photography for a while, maybe you should get back into it as a hobby again. I would love to see more of the work you put out there. You can make a killing off a number of prints.

Very impressive, Bucc.
Some of those bristlecone pines grow to be 5000 years old. That's just mind-boggling to look at one and think that it could have been alive before the Great Pyramids were built in Egypt.
Wow, Bucc is actually talented! Who'd have thunk it!
:D
Seriously, those are great shots.

I'm glad you still have that photo, with all of your moves and everything. What's the SF photo, the one with Coit and TA? Besides, I'm looking out my window and still only see less than an inch of snow on the ground. But I did hear that all around us got more.
