The recent thread about Yahoo got me to thinking...

What webmail service do you guys use as your PRIMARY mail? My impression is that amongst "geeks" that GMail has really taken over, but perhaps we are not the target "geek" audience that I'm thinking of.

Edit: Clarified that I mean this for your primary mail (i.e. I have a yahoo and hotmail account, but my main account is GMail).

Hotmail, primarily. It's gotten better lately, though it's not as good as some. I do have a GMail account as well, but it's just a back-up. Basically, I'm too lazy to switch over from the account I've been using for years now...

Gmail rules. Excellent spam filtration, easy to search, and I never have to worry about running out of space. The ads are minimal, and hardly noticeable. Hotmail and Yahoo are so full of animated flashy crap it would give me a seizure to use them as my primary e-mail.

And the gmail ones at least attempt to be "relevant"... I really get a kick sometimes seeing what item it pulled out of the message i'm reading to give me an ad ;).

I have a an email account through the domain that Render set up for us that can be accessed via the web. I use this for most of my personal correspondance. I also have a Yahoo account for mailing lists and any time I need to give out my email address for some sort of registration or whatnot I use that one so that my personal account doesn't get spammed as much. I probably actually use the Yahoo account more often though since I get many emails daily there from the mailing lists.

I use GMail, but have been annoyed recently with it's handling of responses to an email sent to a large group of people. I sent an email to 38 people, and they all responded, but GMail's "conversation" email style put all the responses in the same place interwined with my message, and it was extremely confusing to sort through. I want a more traditional email structure with the great spam protection and space allowances that GMail has...Oh to dream.

Personally, the conversation style is one of the main reasons I use GMail. The spam protection and space is nice, but the conversation style is what makes it win over others for me.

GMail

I'm really addicted to multiple labels, great search engine, and the conversation style.

by the way, if you don't want to see google's ads on gmail or anywhere else, check out the customize google extension for firefox.

I'm not sure which is my primary. I have two personal yahoo emails and one personal on gmail and also one for my online leagues on gmail. All are used pretty much equally.

This is the exact same situation for me. I have both but have been using hotmail for years so I havent switched most things.

I also have Yahoo mail and Netzero and no doubt dozens of others I havent checked in years.

Though I do have a gmail account, I've had Yahoo so long that it's hard to switch for me. My wife has switched to gmail, but she's had horrendous trouble with spam in recent times, which is probably a product of her registering it with all her message boards and mailing lists. My Yahoo account gets a lot of spam (probably 10-20/day), but I've got about 10 filters set up that throw out virtually all of it and the spamguard probably catches more than that. I've also benefitted from competition to Yahoo because I've never had to pay for it and they have had to expand their features to free users (such as larger mailboxes) to retain users. A few times I had to worry about space limits, but not since they expanded their mailboxes to their present size in recent years.

The conversational style is great when talking one to one, or two to one, but it fails when the message is sent to a large number of people.

ive used gmx for a long time. This was before that restricted non-Germans to have pop email accounts. But I've always liked it alot and does an OK job on spam.

I've got a bunch of GMail and Hotmail alternate accounts to use for spam sensitive stuff. It appears all my accounts are spam infected now, aside from my main hotmail account.

My own personal account is Yahoo!, but the account for my (almost)wife and I is G-Mail.

Agreed. It's incredibly logical and makes things far easier for me.

gmail is where its at. I haven't deleted an e-mail in 2 years. I'm currently using over 500MB of space and I still have over 2GB free space on my account.

Plus its about twice as fast to load as hotmail, and nothing flashes, moves, or otherwise annoys me.
