Just killing some time with OOTP 6.5 waiting for a new baseball sim to be released and wondering...does anyone have statistics for the "engine setup" that will give me realistic modern baseball settings? I feel like I'm getting fairly close but I'm getting sick of having to sim through seasons and then blindly tweak a little up or down and reset and repeat.

I'm hoping that OOTP 2006 won't have an "engine setup" area and it will just play with "right" numbers right out of the box...

Boo for that idea. I don't have any help for you with the engine setup for modern ball, but if the engine came like this I doubt it would allow for historical settings. This would probably kill the franchise.

aaah i suppose you're right. i guess what i don't like about it as much is the fact that i can sit there and adjust it so minutely. i want to be able to just click it and go...but when i do that for modern ball i end up with badly skewed stats right now (manny ramirez hitting .226 after 3 months of the season for example).

so i guess what i'm hoping is that the setting for eras is there and available, but that the actual individual adjustments would maybe need to be editable in a .txt file say.

Agreed. I like the flexibility of making any sort of game you want and I think that'll only get better with OOTPBM

it's just REALLY frustrating to me because right now I can't get

1. a realistic W-L record for my team

combined with

2. realistic BA/SLG #'s for my star hitters and W/L records / ERA for my pitchers

I can get one or the other but not both. And that's just totally killing my enjoyment of the game and means that I am not going to boot it up as much as I want to play a baseball game right now and I'll prolly go grab MVP 2005 with all it's mods and play it instead even though I'd rather be playing OOTP, because it's not worth getting so frustrated to me that my team is 20-12 after 32 games but Manny is batting .226 with 4 homeruns.

Could it by any chance be his ratings that are the problem and not the stat engine. His ratings could be very high, but if they aren't much better than the league average(like say everyone in the league is over-rated) then he will produce average numbers like you are seeing.

I would suggest to play fictional, that way you don't have a pre-conceived mindset of exactly what your record or stats should be. I don't play fictional myself (but play with historical players) and I enjoy the unpredictable variance because star players can get real cold at times.

My thoughts as well. My current dynasty started in 1901 and is in 1923. I like the what-ifs that I have gotten from the players. Things such as Ty Cobb's career ending in his 3rd year. And players that didn't play much more than 1 or 2 years in real life sticking around and getting huge rating boosts and becoming stars.

All that said, for the most part it is as you would expect. Walter Johnson(wins leader in real life) has won 8 Cy Young awards and Joe Jackson has taken 5 MVPS, as well as Babe Ruth hitting 2x as many homeruns as the next team some seasons.

Perfect mix of reality and "what-if" moments.

EDIT::With all of that said, I've heard you can get some seriously weird results with the Lahman database. Never used it myself, I prefer some of the user created historical databases. The one I use is from a guy named "Garlon".

could be...but no one else that i've seen playing with this roster (which i got from the OOTP forums) has had this problem

I agree with you on the perfect mix of reality and "what-if" moments. That is why I play OOTP5 3-4 months every year in the past 4-5-6 (?). I do use Lahman without modifications because it does the Golden Era very, very well, imo. I have heard about the earlier eras not being as good and that would make sense. I remember being in an online league several years ago starting in 1911 and it just seems off. In my yearly solo historical leagues, I stick to the 1946-1969 time frame (sometimes starting a litter earlier or ending a little later) and it is so much fun to me to see which starting pitchers will dominate (last time it was Pasqual, Morgan and Koufax). The hitters, admittedly, are a little more predictable with Williams dominating every career I've played but Aaron, Mays and especially Mantle can be iffy (meaning they are still above-average but depending on injuries and what team they're on, they may not be superstars or have a HOF career).

I just recently download the newest version of Puresim and am having a blast with my hsitorical league. I actually enjoy it more than OOTP 6.5. Just my two cents and sorry for the minor threadjack:)

The newest version 1.21 which came out on january 15th 2006. I fyou had the old Puresim from pre-Matrix publishing days(pre-2006) you can enter your order # get anew serial number and load theupdated version for free. They call it the gold version. Shuan said a new version will be out sometime in 2nd quarter.

I respect your opinion, but for some reason I just can't dig into Puresim. I loaded up OOTP 6.51 a few days ago and I'm back into the game exclusively. Puresim has some great features, but I can't put it all together for some reason. His new screenshots of the almanac looks promising though. OOTP just has so many "little" things that should be there in a baseball sim.

Miz I agree with you somewhat in that Puresim is still an iterative work. I hink there needs to be more in game maagement strategy options such as squeeze bunts moving fielders around like shift outfielders to right etc. That is one area OOTP is a little better.

Yes indeed. The whole interface needs revamped, imo.. and from the screenies of the almanac, looks like Shaun is doing some of that. A fresh coat of paint would do that game wonders.

Hrm???

I honestly thought all this time Walter was the wins leader. Just looked at baseball reference and realized I was completely off by say 100 wins.:o

Honest mistake:p , still in my game Walter has passed Cy in wins.

I love using historical players in fictional universes. I get frustrated though, when I end up with guys who break the HR record in 1980 when the that era takes over. It just isn't fun to me to see loads of 50-70 HR seasons when guys typically only hit 30-35. How can I make this better?

Just keep it in the previous era.
