Another travesty was RoyBoy winning COTY

Why so sour about it?

I don't really like Redick, but he was one of the more worthy choices of recent years. If the top alternative is Morrison, I think you look at the competition each team played and have to still favor Redick.

Roy Williams lost his top six or seven players, including four players declaring early for the NBA, and still managed to whip the returning players and newcomers into a top 15 team that won 23 games and 12 ACC games. It is always difficult to measure 300+ different coaches with 300+ different jobs against one another, but Williams winning coach of the year is far from a travesty.

This was intended to be more of a , "travesty," and stupid nicknames kind of thread.

I just want to go on record as saying that I am sick of everyone using the old "He plays in a better conference so he deserves it" line of reasoning. Morrison performed extremely well in every game they played against top competition. Don't penalize a kid for playing well in the slate of games he has been given.

I don't the conference has anything to do with it, but I do think that a great player has to consistently show up against better players. Morrison is a great college player, naturally, and should be a better NBA prospect.

But...Redick is the best player in college basketball this year, I think.

I'm sure Morrison and Redick will both get some of the various awards that are out there.

I'm curious to see why Roy Williams winning coach of the year is a travesty. What he did with this year UNC team was pretty astounding. I could have seen it going to Bruce Pearl and that would have been fine too, but he didn't even come in second in the voting.

He was just bitter cause it wasn't someone from UCLA or the Pac-10.

I just hate seeing everyone say that Morrison didn't play against top competition, etc., etc. By that reasoning, the POTY should never come from a player outside of the BCS conferences.

But, you touch on the bigger travesty. Bruce Pearl did not even come in second for Coach of the Year. First, when you bring in a class of all-Americans, its not THAT hard to get them to play well. What Bruce Pearl did at Tennessee was take an extremely poor team, that played terribly last year, with very little NBA talent, and turned it into one of the top teams in the country. Sure, they fell off at the end of the year, but they were a great team.

I just wish some one else would hire him, I hate everything that is bright and obnoxious orange.

Bug, please tell me you're smarter than this.

You do realize that the oftentimes the best field-goal percentage shooter on any team is a post player, usually because when they shoot they're shooting from two feet away. Redick is one of the best jump shooters in the NCAA and definitely one of if not the best three-point shooter and free-throw shooter.

I assume you're blowing off steam since a Bruin didn't win the award and Howland didn't win the award for getting the Bruins to peak late. :)

But while we're on the subject of Coach of the Year, I think it's worth noting that before the NCAA tourney began, Rick Majerus was on a local station here saying he was voting George Mason coach Jim Larranaga coach of the year on his ballot and it had nothing to do with winning games -- it was all because he suspended Tony Skinn for the first tourney game, which at the time seemed like he was putting George Mason's hopes for an upset on the back burner just to make a point about how you can't display poor sportsmanship and play college basketball. I still think that was a classy move and I'm glad it paid off.

Roy Williams lost his starters from last year, no doubt. I'm not as upset about Howland not winning it, but falling so far behind. Pretty much every single one of his scholarship players missed some time this year with injuries. He's doing it with kids just as young as Roy Williams has been doing it with. I'd imagine the votes were cast before any meaningful games were played so I guess I cannopt fault the AP voters for that. But the AP voters are the one who put UNC back at 35th in the nation for preseason.

*shrugs* I just don't understand.

As for the POTY, I also dont think Morrison deserved it either, but you are getting warmer

I hope this isn't suggesting that B. Roy should have won it. I think Roy is an oustanding player but he lost my vote for player of the year when he went head to head with Morrison earlier this season. He couldn't guard Morrison, he couldn't score on GU's weak 2-3 zone, and had a difficult time finding shots against either Morrison (who we have all heard is a horrible defender), Pendergraft, or PMAC.

Morrison: 43 points, 18-29 shooting, 2 assists, 5 rebounds
Roy: 10 points, 3-9 shooting, 2 rebounds, 6 assists

Fortunately for Roy, GU was without Knight, Heytvelt, and Raivio (for most of the game) and the Huskies were still able to hang on for the win.

Roy is a great player and is going to be a good pro, but POY when dominated like that in a game against one of the other serious contenders for the award? Nah.

One game doesn't mean much in the scheme of things as everyone is prone to mistakes. Because Arron Afflalo is considered the best on ball defender and Roy succeeded twice vs Afflalo while Morrison struggled

Roy vs UCLA
10 points, 3-9 FG, 4 assists, 3 rebounds
20 points, 3-11 FG, 7 assists, 4 rebounds

Morrison's struggle:
24 points, 10-17 FG, 1 assist, 5 rebounds

Well, if it was only based on scoring then I would agree that Redick and/or Morrison deserve it
