I didn't see this last year, but heard it was pretty good. My wife and I decided to watch the first show of the second season tonight to see if we liked it. Anyone watch the first season, and have any thoughts on it?

Very interesting...had no idea that it was as dangerous as it actually is. I saw several episodes and enjoyed them all.

It appears that from 7 ET until sometime (not sure), Discovery is showing "the best of the first season" so you might want to check it out.

I've never seen the show, though it does look interesting. I just never forget to change the channel from my cartoons to something real...

Watched some of the first season, it's kinda ... nerve wracking to me.

It's interesting to a point, I guess I just don't feel the need to add more stress to my life voyeuristically.

I didn't know it was a series. I've caught bits and pieces off and on and figured it was just another one-hour episode that Discovery repeats over and over.

what I saw was pretty cool though

I didn't see it first run, but caught it during their endless marathon reruns.

It was strangely appealing, and is really very well done. I can't believe it, but I can't wait to see tonight's offering.

Well, it was ok. I was more impressed with how they remembered where they dropped the pots.

Thought it was interesting. Had no idea that people actually often died doing fishing type stuff. Kinda made me appreciate all seafood just a little bit more.

Is anybody still watching this? If you don't you might want to check out last week's episode. They captured some amazing footage from the bridge of the ship of a 60 ft. rogue wave that side-swipes the ship and knocks it on its side. It was really eerie too, because just before that they had to return 10 hrs to port to let off a 1st timer that wigged out and wanted off the boat. He threatened to jump off the boat if they didn't take him back in. Then they head back out and whammo! Very cool show.

Same here. I saw one episode and thought it was really interesting, but had no idea it was a series.

It's funny, because I remember back in college there were always advertisements in the Michigan Daily for summer jobs fishing in Alaska. The money was unreal for the 2-3 months you worked, so it sounded tempting, but then we kept hearing about how dangerous it was, e.g., people losing their arms in fishing nets and such. So I opted for a local sporting goods store.

Those summer jobs weren't even actually crab fishing. Their crab seasons are really only days long, and they are in October for King Crab and Mid Winter for Snow Crab.

One of my former employees did the crab fishing thing when he lived in Alaska. He went out on a crab boat one season, and then worked in the processing plants after that.

This is the last season for the lottery-style as they will be instituting a per boat quota next season. Too bad as I really enjoy the show.

Actually last season was the final lottery style year I believe. This season is the first year of the per boat quota. The quota caused the entire fishing fleet to contract about 50% compared to last season. I thought it would make the fishing less exciting, but I think this season may be possibly even more exciting than last year..probably because the weather has been way worse so far.

Yeah, I think they said something about there being only 80 or so boats instead of the 200+ from last year. The episode last week I think even had a small part in it about one of the guys who's been doing this for years talking about his buddies being out of work because of the changes.

If you guys like the show, I'd recommend reading The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger. Yes, it's the book upon which the George Clooney film was made, but it's an excellent non-fiction book. The parts that don't deal with the storm talk a lot about what fishing is like in these conditions and what these guys go through. It's also an engaging read, with fascinating material. I highly recommend it.
