Anyone catch her speech on the immigration issue. She spends some time talking about the proposal to make it a crime to knowingly aid illegal immigrants(i dont see how its different from knowingly aiding a criminal, since their ILLEGAL aliens, but i digress). She said it was a horrible idea to penalize people for being good samaritans...i dont agree with her view, but ill respect her right to say it.

Thats where she makes quite possibly the worst point ive heared in this whole issue. She says something extremly close to(dont have the exact wording in front of me) "Under this new legislation, jesus would be a criminal." WHAT?? I'm not bashing her because im a repub, if bush said the same he would have been crucified by the media(like the pun?). I think hilary is overrated, but if any person had made this comment i would post this. Im just stunned that she made such a comment(insert any religious/historical figure, not just christian)...

So in sumnation, i wanted to laugh about how amazingly idiotic that sounded, and then segue into a political discussion. :)

Is Hilary the most qualified democrat, and regardless, will she get the nod? Im a repub, and really dont follow the democrats too much(I really like obama though, whenever he comes around it will take quite a bit for me to vote against him). Are their many senators who can challenge her?

As for the repubs, it sounds like its starting to shape up as Mccain vs Frist(just what ive heared). Do either have a shot?

I think the thinking is that Jesus was all for helping those in need, so if you make it a crime to help someone in need it would have made Jesus a criminal. It's backed up by Bishops telling their priests to refuse to follow the law.

I know what her reasoning was, i just thought it was so idiotic sounding. I think there were less extreme examples that would help her get her point across

What is your foundation for this statement? I'm not bashing you; I'm just curious. I know of no Christian denomination that does not take the position that Jesus was without sin. What laws are you saying that Jesus broke? The only argument I can think of would be that since he claimed that he was the Son of God, and therefore was one with God, that he blasphemed, and therefore was guilty of breaking jewish law. Is that what you are referring to, or did you have more in mind?

I'm not an expert on the Bible, but I believe he was crucified for breaking Roman law. Just because he broke a human law doesn't make him sinful.

That's precisely what I was referring to. Jesus was without sin, but His message was revolutionary, and contrary to the interests of the hebrew establishment at the time. He was tried and found guilty under the system of law that he lived in, even though he was without any real fault.

No. According to the Bible, He was executed for breaking Jewish law (a law He did not break). The Sanhedrin was not allowed to put to death, so they needed the Roman governor to allow the execution. Pilate said he found no fault in Jesus, but allowed His execution.

When it comes down to it, it doesn't seem that Hillary's point was so much "wrong" as it was maybe just too liberal of a use of hyperbole.

You suck at writing, then. Let's try again:

OT (Politics): Another voice heard on Immigration Issue

Did anyone catch Hilary Clinton's speech on the immigration issue? She spent a fair bit of time talking about the part of the proposal to make it a crime to knowingly aid illegal immigrants. (As an aside, I don't understand what's different from knowingly aiding a criminal, and knowingly aiding an illegal alien, who is a criminal by definition, but I digress). Clinton was essentially saying that it was a bad idea to penalize people for being good samaritans. This is not a view I'd agree with, but she's welcome to her opinion.

After this, though, she said something that seemed very out of place in the overall context of this discussion. Paraphrasing, it was something like: "Under this new legislation, Jesus would be a criminal." I must admit, I don't understand this. I don't see the connection she's making and I think she's opening herself up to ridicule, as would any politician who said the same, and I extend that to George Bush, of whom I am a supporter.

I don't know, it just seems to be a very off-the-wall and politically reckless comment to me.

Related to this, though, I have to ask, is Hilary the most qualified potential Democratic nominee for 2008? Will she get the nomination? As I said, I'm a Republican so I don't really follow the Democrats (though I do like Obama and think I would vote for him in the future). Are there any other people who would offer a challenge to her nomination?

As for Republicans, I'd say it looks like McCain vs. Frist. Any other thoughts? Or have things not changed since flere posted those two threads about two weeks ago?
