This is going to be started a day early. I had a freakin' dream that we lost to Pittsburgh tomorrow. But nonetheless, it is a huge game, something we need to do is get over the hump of beating the Steelers. Also, it'd be our first winning season since 1990 if we get #9 Sunday.

Tidbit from ESPN: "Johnson suggested this week that, if he scores on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers in a key AFC North matchup, his choreographed celebration will be his best ever. This week, Johnson wore a Terrible Towel as a bib while eating lunch in the locker room, a clear jab at the Steelers."

That's just.. fantastic. Go Bengals.

If the Bengals want to make a statement, this is the game to do it in, with a win this sumday they would take what is essentially a 3 game lead in the division due to the split with pitt and in the end probably having a better divisional record. With 4 games left it would all but assure Cincinnati of our first division title in 15 years and a home game in our first game of the post season. It would also keep them in the running for a first round bye should Denver stumble along the way.

GO BENGALS! I BELIEVE! IN MARVIN WE TRUST!

TroyF

Three very important football games tomorrow.

1) Dallas vs. NY Giants

Winner takes a one game lead in the division. Cowboys would also clinch the tiebreaker, making it a two game lead with 4 games left. Must win for the Giants.

2) Cincy at Pittsburgh

This would tie up the division, but Pittsburgh holds the tiebreaker. The scary thing about the AFC is you could lose this game and be in danger of missing the playoffs. Cincy also has to have this win if they have any hopes of a first round bye.

3) Denver at KC

Simply put, Denver wins this game, they will win the AFC west. No, it isn't a lock they would do it. The Chargers would still be 2 back with 4 to play. Thing is, Denver has Baltimore, Buffalo and Oakland on the schedule before they play SD. SD has road games in Indy and KC left. Denver has the favorable schedule if they get by this game.

For KC, this isn't as much about the division as it is the playoffs. They finish with Dallas and the Giants on the road and SD and Cincy at home. That's brutal. That looks more like 1-3 than 3-1. They lose the game to Denver, it's probably over.

Someone want to tell me what the Giants are doing? 3rd and 12, Bledsoe throws a 7 yard route to Witten. He drops the ball.

Not one, but two Giants players take two full steps and nail Witten right in front of the official. Then they get pissed at the flag. Ummm guys, just because he isn't a QB doesn't mean you can take full runs and hit him for the hell of it.

Giants playing dumb again today, game scoreless.

Rule states you must have possession of the ball all the way to the ground, regardless of if that is in or out of bounds. This wasn't a fumble ruling it was a catch ruling. He didn't keep control throughout the catch, it's incomplete.

I blame a lot of Vick's sacks on Vick. I think he brings many of them on his own, but that play was one of two things:

1) Either the play was designed to fake the DT inside and that was the assumption or

2) It was a missed assignment.

Either way, not the QB's read. He ran the play call and never had a chance. That's either on the coach or the OLineman there.

Stupid announcers... if the kicker had the RANGE, it can't be short as well. The only negative side effect of switching to Comcast is that I can no longer listen to the radio during games, as it is a good second and a half ahead of the picture. From cbs.sportsline.com fantasy updates

Braylon Edwards, WR CLE

News: Braylon Edwards was helped from the field in the fourth quarter of Week 13 against Jacksonville with an apparent right knee injury. He finishes the day with five receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns.

Analysis: The injury was ugly and might possibly be serious, although we will wait on official confirmation. Upon reaching the sidelines, he was immediately carted off to the locker room. Frisman Jackson will be the team's No. 2 receiver if he is out of action next week.

With 54 seconds left, Denver have no timeouts left, and KC with 3rd down, is there anything to stop KC handing the ball to Larry Johnson and running backwards down the field? By running forward, they have to punt with 8 seconds left - if he could stay in his feet for 8 seconds more running backwards then drop to the ground, the game would be over.

Is there a rule against this?

49ers lose...Alex Smith played his best game, despite throwing 3 INT's. IMO, it's a step in the right direction. Agreed. He looked really good for most of the game (EDIT -- the first half, really), and at least two of his picks were because the ball was tipped/he was hit as he threw.

He's got some learning to do, but he can throw the ball well, and today made a couple of really nice throws. We get him an O-Line that knows what it's doing, and we might be in business.

AFC

1. Indy, 2. Denver, 3. Cincy, 4. NE, 5. Jax, 6. KC.

If San Diego beats Oakland tonight, they would move into the 6th spot.

Panthers have a chance to basically put the South on ice next week if they beat Tampa. Doing so would put them two up on Tampa with three left, but would basically be a three-game with a sweep in hand. They'd also keep 2+tiebreaker ahead of Atlanta. Still have to travel to both NO and Atlanta, so it's not inconceivable for them to cough it up, though. However, they should (I repeat, should) beat NO, which will basically eliminate any chance either TB or ATL catch them if they win at home next week. That abysmal performance in Chicago is looking like it will come back to haunt them, however, as they now need Chicago to falter at least once more than they do to get the bye.

What'll be interesting is if Seattle gets beat by Philadelphia tomorrow. If that happens, all hell will be breaking loose trying to figure out not only who makes th playoffs, but who'll be seeded where.

Even if Seattle loses, though, they have the easiest finish by far of any serious candidate for the playoffs (19-29 opposing record over the last four and 12 of those wins belong to Indy). Basically, the worst they should finish is 12-4 even with a loss tomorrow.

OK, I know I'm a day late with my complaint, but I'll never understand Shanahan's decision to run the clock out at the end of the first half against KC. If you don't want to try the field goal, at least throw to the end zone. Personally, if Elam's too gimpy to try the field goal, I'd let Sauerbrun try it. Either way, I sure wouldn't just run the clock out.

As for the end of that game, I said to my wife that the Chiefs could've done something interesting on fourth down. They could've gotten into punt formation but had their fastest guy stand next to the punter. Have the punter take the snap (since he's used to handling the long snap), hand off to the fast guy, and let the fast guy run all the way back for a safety. I mean, it would be a little weird, and there would've been a chance for a botched handoff, but I'm a Broncos fan. I would've wanted that. :D

I was thinking just send one receiver straight to the end zone and throw a rainbow pass out of the end zone. The problem with any of those scenarios is the chance of a botched snap or a sack or whatever else might happen, because you're basically putting them in a position to get a return TD without much of a problem. They probably did the right thing there, even if it left time on the clock.

I tend to think that the ol' heave ho downfield is not as effective a final play in that situation as, say a screen pass to the opposite side of the field as the trip receivers is. If you hit that play right and can get the blockers downfield enough, it's got a chance to break as a big play. A better chance than Plummer throwing it 75 yards in the air, anyway.

Or try that play the Giants ran a few years back when it was a pass to the middle of the field, then the receiver broke to the sideline... then handed on a reverse to another receiver around the end. They almost scored a 65 yard or so TD with 2 seconds left in that game... whichever game that was. Apparently I can't remember anything today.

I'm not going anywhere with this, but just imagine if the NFL had an end-of-game rule like Arena Football does. In the AFL, if you're on offense and winning in the final minute of the game, you must gain positive yardage to keep the clock moving. No kneeldowns. No handing off and dancing in the backfield. You have to move forward.

I won't pretend that the AFL is a better product than the NFL overall, but I've watched and attended a couple of AFL games that had exciting endings because of that one rule. I'm sure it'll never happen in the NFL, but I find it interesting to think about how it would change if they put that rule in.

It's a joke. A mockery of the game of football. It's one step short of a field goal kicking contest.

My very simple OT fix: Each team gets at least one posession. very simple and you retain the whole game of football.

You win the kick, drive down and score a TD? Fine, you kick off.
The other team scores 7? tie game
You intercept the ball? game over
They turn it over on downs? game over

You win the kick, drive down and score a TD? Fine, you kick off.
The other team scores 7? tie game
You intercept the ball? game over
They turn it over on downs? game over
While I don't agree that the current system is a "mockery of the game of football", I like the simple OT fix. I would see it as an improvement on the current system.

Under your system, what would happen if the team kicking off at the start of OT kicked and recovered an on-sides kick?

I would say the kickoff = the receiving team's shot at posession.

So if a team scores, onside kicks and recovers = game over.

If they start the OT by kicking onside and recover, then score = game over

It doesn't matter because I doubt any team ever would onside kick it under those circumstances.

Those rules make sense and of course it matters.

I do wish the NFL would change OT, but the reality is they only care about getting the games over quickly enough to get the next one on TV. It sucks.

So basically the same system but using the full field instead of the fixed starting position (which would of course reintroduce kickoffs).

That would be the format I would personally rather see, but due to time restraints and the such, I can't see it ever being a truly considered option. Given the choice between the current system and a "start at x yard line" where both teams get a crack at it, I'll take the latter any day of the week. A system where a team can lose without ever touching the ball is worse (to me) than ensuring that each offense gets a chance.

I don't mind when I live on the East Coast. Living on the East Coast sucks when you have to go to work. When I move to Mountain Time next year I'll agree with you. :)

Arena Football's overtime rules state that each team gets a possession, but they play it on the whole field. Now, of course there are tons more points scored in the AFL, so it's unlikely that an overtime will last any more than 3 or 4 minutes (I think there's only been one tie in AFL history). Anyway, the reason I bring up the AFL again is that I remember a strange incident a couple of seasons ago. Former Cowboys QB Danny White coached the Arizona Rattlers, and they did an onside kick to start overtime against the Dallas Desperados. The Rattlers recovered, went down the field, scored a touchdown but missed the PAT. White and the Rattlers thought that the game was over. After all, the Desperados had their chance at possession when they were receiving the onside kick right? Wrong. In the AFL, onside kicks and muffed kicks do not count as possessions. Arizona had to kick off again, and Dallas scored the game-winning touchdown and PAT a few plays later.

If the NFL were to ever adopt this overtime format, they'd have to consider what would happen if a team started overtime by recovering their own onside kick. Honestly, I'm not sure if I like the AFL's way of handling that or not. It could really go either way for me.

Gosh, I'm going to miss attending AFL games. The nearest team to me now is in Columbus. :(

The problem with the 2 rules people mentioned about not gaining any yards = clock stops and having a pass not cross the line of scrimmage = live ball is you're giving the refs 2 more ways to totally fuck up a game. We don't really need more crucial judgment calls put in their hands.

I don't really know the benefit of the behind-the-line forward pass being a live ball (not that I'm arguing it), but eliminating the kneeldown would bring a lot more excitement to the end of a close game. The NFL will never do it, and I'm not saying that it would be better, but fans are supposed to want excitement, right? It's only a judgment call if they can't tell whether the offense gained yardage. Perhaps I'm an idealist, but I can't see that situation coming up very often.

Even so, I see what you're saying, and I admit that it'll never happen in the NFL anyway. I just really miss being near an AFL team, I guess. :)
