Probably the worst kept secret, since it's been heavily rumored it would be announced today for the past 2-3 weeks... and CNN just announced it. Still no hard facts, just that it will just be an iPod music device with video capability & not media player like other companies have.

More info:

New iPod announced -- 2.5-inch display, 320 x 240 resolution, MPEG-4 support, and video out. Engadget caught that they are 30% thinner than current full-size iPod. Will be available in 20GB and 60GB versions for $299 and $399, respectively.

iTunes 6 announced -- 2000 music videos available, $1.99 each.

I was thinking they would split the iPod line between video and music models and overcharge(even more) for the video model. Going by the prices it looks like it's just the next iteration of the iPod.

I think they should of made the click wheel smaller, screen larger and change it to a horizontal interface. The screen looks pretty small to be playing videos in that pic.

I want see the specs on what types of video can be played on it. If it can handle DiVX format, i'm probably breaking out the wallet pretty soon.

I don't know, at first glance I think there are better devices out there for playing video. A co-worker of mine bought an Archos(I think) a year ago. Was probably a bit thicker but it had a much larger screen. They are probably even better now.

no shit. i know there is some mid thirties dude out there, in his parents basement, that has all of the headbanger's ball episodes on tape. I will pay him to convert them to a format the ipod can play.

While Apple has been the first do nothing in this area, they are doing things better than everyone else.

The fact that they just keep updating the product without the price going up is what's keep them on top of the market. And they market their product so much that it's inescapable.

I like watching the VH1 top 20 video show just for Rachel Perry. Forget the videos, just have her on the screen for an hour, scantily clad.

IMO, the best part of this new iPod is 20 hours of music battery life. Good stuff.

Between having a Palm Pilot and a PSP, I don't really need another device that can play video, especially when the screen is as miniscule as it is on the iPod (2.5").

What I hope will come out of this, though, is that more portable-ready video is released. Even though the capability to play video portably has been around for awhile, it usually takes something a la Apple to get something to really come of it.

When/if they release a larger-screen version, I'd get that. Something that is comparable to the size of the Palm Pilot screen or the PSP screen (probably Palm Pilot, given that I'd want to keep it in a pocket).

/tk

P.S. Palm released two new devices today, the Tungsten T|X and the Zire Z22. I've already ordered my T|X.

Too bad the battery life and storage size for the PSP is just inferior. If it had about a 20 gig drive, and a 10 hour battery, it would be the perfect device.

Sweet. I was planning to pick up a 60GB Ipod to replace my 4GB Mini. I'll definately pick on of these up before the end of the week!

All I want is a good Canadian soap like the ones I see on the spanish channel.
