This site has long ago gone the way of a general discussion, but recently I was hoping to get back into some simulation of the 2005 NFL season.
TPF doesn't seem to have anything remotely like current rosters and constantly crashes.
Madden, is just an arcade game - no matter how much I tweak the coach mode it still doesn't cut it.
FOF is not only quite a bit out of date but I can't find any current rosters either (a search on this board turned up a dead link and that is it)
Do any of you guys even play Text Based football games anymore?

I play it just about everyday. Yabanci has some updated rosters, is that link dead? If so, PM him and I'm sure he'll send it to you.
NCAA 2006 and FOF 2004 fullfill my football needs quite well this year.
As soon as Jim releases info on his next game, this place will be quite busy with football sim posts or whatever sport game he chooses to release.

I hate to say it, but I think we're getting close to the point where graphical PC/Console games are starting to have just as good sim engines as text based ones. NCAA is amazing, and really gives TCY a run for its money, and thats without even "playing" the games.

Are there any leagues ran like the one by Joe Satriani?

hey man...i was wondering if you might be interested in joining a new FOF league ran along the lines of Joe Satre's IFL (Internet Football League)

I think that you might find that quite a lot of the community of people who play long-term career-style sports sims are not all that interested in simulated the current NFL season. Personally, it doesn't interest me one whit, and I play sim football all the time, still.
The lack of a current NFL roster rates a zero on my scale, and has nothing at all to do with the relevance of the FOF game.
YMMV, of course, but that may be a factor in why getting a roster with Peerless Price listed as the 5th wideout in Dallas just isn't a high priority for all that many of us.

What he said. When I first started FOF and other sim games, the real players was the critical thing. I had to know who was who and I wanted to start out with my favorite team. It was critical.
Now? No desire to use real players at all. I start with fictional rosters and go from there. Even on a console game like NCAA, I sim until no traces of real players remain, even if I decide to play the games out.
As for your question, I play text based football on a weekly basis.
Though I will say that if a new sim isn't released soon, I'll put football on the back burner for a bit. FM2006, Civ4, XBox360, Quake 4. . . that'll be taking up too much of my time for anything else.

It helps me with instant immersion, even if Peerless Price is nothing like Peerless Price...consider it a crutch.
But, I would imagine that the crowd that calls it's own plays would find something like Yabanci's rosters more valuable than somebody who blitzes through a season in one sitting.

I play text-based football sims everyday (FOF2, TCY, FOF2004)...couldn't care much about having current NFL rosters since the basic principle of these games is length : "career based games"....Although I admit when I first started playing these games, it HAD to have the actual NFL rosters so that I could feel more comfortable. A long time ago, that was ;-)
