How do you think they feel today? (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2185866)

Ow. Even at the Division III level, playing two full games in one day has to HURT.

It's true it's never been done in modern college football history, but in the early days (we're talking turn of the century, before the NCAA even existed), it did happen occasionally. Obviously, it was a different game then, though probably no less brutal. Then again, the most common doubleheaders I've seen involved a university team taking on a pair of high schools in the same day (University of Chicago taking on Hyde Park High and Englewood High, or something similar).

"Socks, as it turned out, that only came up to the calf. Most of his players would not wear them."

um,

They might as well have played a high school team. Trinity Bible is beyond awful. Macalester isn't much better.

This would have been like Texas warming up with Ferris State and then playing SMU, relatively speaking.
