View Full Version : How many of these parents will sign up their kids today?

As mentioned in this thread (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/showthread.php?t=43350), I have an all-night lock-in with middle schoolers tonight. Word has spread like wildfire around the community in the last 48-ish hours. When I left the office yesterday afternoon, I had 45ish sign-ups in hand. As of right now, I have 89, and a teacher who volunteers with us says that he has 10 in hand, with another couple of dozen saying that "I'm coming and bringing money to the bus tonight!" I've actually gotten MORE calls today, however, from parents at the OTHER Middle School (the one that is in Tucker, near my house). I have no idea how many sign-ups will be waiting in my mailbox when I swing by the house this afternoon, but I've probably talked to 10-12 TMS parents today, and 5-8 HMS (Henderson Middle School, the school where the teacher is a volunteer) parents. All of them say, "Yes, we'll get the money to you this afternoon, and I think he/she has a couple of friends that are interested, too." Thus the poll: for pride and glory, how many TOTAL kids will we have on this thing tonight?
I've already reserved bus #3 (a mini-bus with only 27 seats), and am considering reserving bus #4, even. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/showthread.php?t=43350)

as someone who gets locked in a house with four kids every night, I can safely say the answer to your question is "Too damn many". :D

153 will show up to get on the buses. However, I also predict:
- 13 of these will not have all the money and/or paperwork required, and you'll have to send them back home.
- 7 more will not have all the money and/or paperwork required, but their parents will have dropped them off anyway and left already, forcing you to take them along on the trip because you can't in good conscience leave them on the streets of Tucker to fend for themselves.

Dola - Sign up, or attend? My 117 guess was based on attendance, not sign ups.

Yeah, I thought about a sleeping bag comment, but I couldn't remember if this was a trip where you were supposed to bring them or not, so I left it alone. Thanks for handling that part for me http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Well, I guess I'm screwed.
I hate you guys. What's funny is that I've noticed an early trend of people picking numbers near what I picked. I'll be the first to tell you that I'm pretty stumped. There has been SO much publicity on this event this year, that I really have no idea as to what to expect. Usually for this particular event, we have around double our 12-noon-Friday numbers actually show up and go. However, the word got around earlier this year, so maybe that means fewer new sign-ups at the last minute, but maybe it means more, since there's more momentum. I'm not really the "insider" on this one.

Actually, though, we're leaving from the streets of "unincorporated Atlanta," I guess you'd call it. We're leaving from an Atlanta address, but it isn't in the city limits of Atlanta.

Dang it. My bus company can't come up with more than the 27-passenger mini-bus, giving me a total of 129 seats.
Time to call another bus company. Methinks I'll need more than that.

- 37 kids will volunteer to sit on someone else's lap (I expect mostly boy-girl here, but given the demographics posted in the other thread I'm making no real prediction here), thus solving this issue.

UPDATE: I found a guy named Jose' with a 48-passenger bus. He'll only charge me $150 if he shows up and I don't need him, $400 if I do need him. That's a decent bit cheaper than the other two big buses, and the mini-bus even costs $300. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what Jose's bus looks like? :p

Do you sit at home at night, maybe during a quiet period, and silently brood in your head over the sheer "asshole-ness" of people that wait until the exact last second to attempt to attend an event and therefore cause a logistical nightmare?
I know I would. You don't want to turn anyone down, as this could perhaps be one of the few times to reach a child, but its almost arrogant to wait like this. Last day signups would cost an additional $20-30 dollars if i was in charge(no idea how much the thing is in the first place).

Did you tell them that you were bringing the Blowfish? That would hype up attendence. I predict 212, and Jose disappears with 60 of them for three days, at which point they return without sleeping bags.

I just woke up from a nap. Was out for approximately an hour. 14 missed calls. 10 messages. Probably would have been more, but my mailbox was full. Comments...
1. No, you self-centered, only-me parents. I will NOT call and of the four of you personally to just to tell you that the trip is still on. If it were cancelled, I would have left a message on the answering maching to that effect.
2. They're calling off soccer games for tomorrow morning, freeing up more kids to show up tonight. I have 177 seats on the buses. 10ish of those are for my leaders. We'll see what happens. Headin' to the Tucker game now. I'll report in tomorrow morning.
Hopefully you miss the game tomorrow. Go Vols :)

Just got back from the Tucker game. I needed to briefly talk to the bus driver before coming into the office to grab sign-up lists, etc. Parents descended upon my vehicle like vultures, over a half hour before pick-up time, trying to sign up MY KID RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! I told 'em I needed to get the lists, and to wait outside. I wonder how many are right outside the door in the pouring rain.
