I knew he was sick the last time I went home, and it really sucked having to say goodbye, but I think he knew. He was probably the coolest dog ever. Growing up really sucks.

I hear ya, man. I had to put my first dog to sleep about 11 years ago now. I got her when I was 5 and she was around for 15 years. One of the hardest things I had to do. She was a great dog throughout.

I still cry at the memory of putting my first cat and my first dog to sleep. Tiger was 14 and Sambouka was 13 and it was so hard. My condolences.

I am sorta in the same boat you are. When I was a Soph in high school we got a dog. He is the coolest dog i ever had. He would play all the time and he was just so loving and affectionate. He is now 15 years old, deaf, and blind in one eye. And his "good" eye is not so good anymore. He goes through periods during the day where he loses sight in that eye. He also has developed a cough that the vet said is allergies but it sounds more like bronchitis (sp?). I feel so bad for him because he just gets so scared. This is tearing my mom up inside. I love the dog to death and I dont want him to die. But above all I do not want him to suffer. I just moved out of my parents' house yesterday but i will still go over and visit him everyday just to see how he is and pet him.

I am sure he knows that you loved him just like Chipper knows that I love him. Some people dont believe animals dont have souls but I do, and when his day comes I will be heartbroken but at the same time I know he'll be able to hear and see and will be free of pain. Just remember the good times, I guess that best thing i can say to you.

of course she lives on in the stories we tell each other. when we're all around we'll bring up one story or another and next thing we'll be laughing like crazy. twenty minutes and several stories later we'll just shake our heads and marvel at the fact that we had such an awesome cat for 21 years. she's truly become a legend in the mcsweeny household

I feel for you. My dog is 13 and at times he doesn't look good. He lives with my mother now and I only see him a few times a year. I never know when it will be the last time...

nah, he's at my mom's house. I really feel bad for her, thats been like her best friend forever. That's the one thing I hate is that I don't have any pictures of him. I haven't really gotten to hang with the dog much since I started college since I was only home during the summers (and then I was working). Maybe there's some laying around her house I can steal.

Strange thing is, the dog at my dad's house died when I was in college, and that didn't bother me as much. He was just as fun, but I guess because he was an outside dog and I didn't get to hang with him much. Nothing better than laying on a couch during the summer and having your dog laying on the floor and the dog basically saying to you "why the fuck aren't you petting me, that's why I'm here".

Wow, same boat as me. This summer we had to put him to sleep. Ended the long living line of our cats. First one died of cancer when he was 14, other one's body just stopped working when he was 18, and the last one's body just stopped working when he was 21. All 3 from the same stray cat that my mom took in. Even after 2 months whenever I go downstairs I always look to the couch where he spent the last 2 years lounging on.
