Hello all,
If I mark something OT, it must be WAY off topic... :D
I'm organizing a week long trip for the first week in July. The site is the Valle Vidal unit of the Carson National Forest in northern New Mexico. We've got a decent sized group going so far, and I thought I'd open it up for anyone from here that might be interested in coming on up. There is more info about it on my website. Let me know if you have any questions!

Is this a backpacking trip or just a camping trip?
Edit: I ask because it sounds like fun, but Arles JR will be limiting my activity levels at that point in time. Camping and light hiking: ok. 25 mile backpacking trip: not ok.

Is that near Taos, or the Philmont Ranch?

It'll be static camping. We set up a base, and then do whatever from there. The hikes are all day hikes, no backpacking.

This would be a good beginning to one of those horror camping movies. To all those going, make sure you tell as many people as possible that you are going, and when you are coming back. :)

Yes, and yes :D
It's northeast of Taos, and Philmont borders the area on the south. I used to work summers at Philmont, so that is how I found the area.
Unfortunately, it may not stay a pristine area much longer. Over the objections of just about all parties involved (forest service, local landowners, etc.) a proposal to drill for coal gas has been fast-tracked for the area. The following website has the info: http://www.vallevidal.org

A group of friends and I spent a few weeks at Philmont many years ago. I admit it took some getting used to the American scout culture -- good god, folks, they're just badges! -- but overall it was a good time.

Oh man, I love the New Mexico forests. My family always went camping in the Gila National Forest when I was a kid...
Too bad this trip is when we're having a family reunion in Iowa. :(

So, what is about this "New" Mexico that makes it better? Bigger chiclets? Less mexicans? I just don't get it....

Can I bring beer?
Seriously, need to look at my school schedule I was hoping to plan a trip that way around that time if I can. My company is shutdown from July 2 - July 17. Where is it in relation to Sante Fe?

So they have maize, but no wheat. Got it.

We'll be at around 7500 feet, so it doesn't get too hot during the day, maybe 85 to 90. There is usually a bit of rain in the afternoon, starting around 1pm, lasting anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. But since the humidity is so low, things dry off really fast. It does get cool at night, sometimes down to the high 40's/low 50's.

Sure, beer is always welcome! :D
It's a couple of hours north of Santa Fe. Here's a map to show it relation to other spots in New Mexico:

It's only about an 8 hour drive from Phoenix, not bad. This sounds like fun. I will check with the other half and see if he wants to go.

Front page bump for this...
It's a little under six weeks to go, and the planning for the trip is kicking into high gear. If you are planning to go (Arlie & Farrah, Bucc), PM me, so I can get you put on the email list. The menu is what is going to be planned this week, so we can try to estimate food costs. In the PM, let me know which days you are planning to attend, if you have any food likes/dislikes, or if you plan to bring your own grub.
Once again, if you have any questions, let me know.
